The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 25, 2015 From the Pastor’s REGULAR Desk SCHEDULE of MASSES on Sunday “ Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 8am, 10am and 12pm Saturday, January 24 How hard it is for us to make a career change. We worry and ponder and evaluate before we make a move, yet the disciples seem to have no such hesitation in leaving their families and jobs. It just doesn’t seem right to us, and , of course, it isn’t. Today’s Gospel most likely doesn’t as much describe the actual transformation of the first disciples, as it portrays what should be the reaction of one who seeks to be a disciple upon receiving the call of the Lord. Nothing else will seems as important anymore. Subsequent gospels talk about the confusion and lack of understanding of the disciples during Jesus’ ministry, so biblical scholars conclude that it is an idealized response that is show in today’s reading. We can draw encouragement from the fact that even the early disciples took time to grasp who Jesus was and what the impact of his ministry would be. It is only after the resurrection that they really “get it”, so we, too take time to understand the call of the Lord and how it should impact our decisions and actions. Jesus was patient with the disciples, even doubting Thomas, so if we struggle to understand and believe we can be sure Jesus waits for us to reach that point at which we can say we truly “get it.” 5pm Christine Smith req. Entitled No Longer Slaves, but Brothers and Sisters, he made the “duty” of people of goodwill, institutions, and countries to combat and prosecute “modern day forms of slavery.” These include forced labor, debt bondage, trafficking in persons, organ trafficking, sexual exploitation for money and forced marriage. He labeled these types of slavery as a “scourge” in the world. Our Pontiff stated that “poverty” is at the head of causes that contribute to the emergence of forms of modern day slavery, followed by “a lack of access to education” or “scare, even non-existent employment opportunities.” He referred to the living conditions of “many migrants who, in their dramatic odyssey experience hunger, are deprived of freedom, robbed of their possessions or undergo physical and sexual abuse.” Pope Francis urges our renewal and commitment to the social doctrine of the church. One way of doing this would be socially responsible purchasing of goods that are not made by exploitation of our brothers and sisters around the world.
