The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2015 From the Pastor’s REGULAR Desk SCHEDULE of MASSES on Sunday “ The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” Many people may not realize it, but the scribes were merely commentators on the scriptures. They were not priests of the Temple, they were more inquirers into the meaning and interpretation of the scriptures and more often the laws of the Jewish people. Their opinions were argued and different from one another. What they taught was open to debate. Into such an arena of argumentation steps Jesus who has no qualms about telling the people what the scriptures mean. As they say, “He speaks with authority…” which flows from his relationship with the Father. Our Catholic community is blessed that Jesus took the precaution to avoid the same stumbling block the ancient Jews had. He established a teaching authority in the Church and reminded everyone that the Spirit of God flowed through all of them and that they should seek, through prayer and counsel with one another, what God willed them to do. We see that practiced today in the Church Councils and the direction of the Pope and bishops, as well as the consultation with lay representatives. Discerning the paths a large community must take is no easy deliberation. We seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the cooperation of people of good will to express in our relationships the fraternity of all humankind. If we seek to speak with authority, the counsel of many needs to be sought. 8am, 10am and 12pm Saturday, January 31 5pm John Gleeson req. Dot & George Molta Sunday, February 1 8am req. She was later brought to freedom through the help of the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She lived in religious consecration and in service to others, especially the most lowly and helpless. This saint, who lived at the turn of the 20th century, is even today an exemplary witness of hope for the many victims of slavery. The Vatican announced that the Pontifical Council for Migrants has designated St. Josephine’s Feast Day of February 8, as the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking.
