December sure was busy around FLEEC, in fact it is our busiest month, but it is also our favorite! The Penguins (Pre-‐K) class worked really hard on having “helping hands.” They did chores and helped out around the house to earn money to adopt two angels from the Salvation Army for Christmas. They raised over $150 and adopted Felix and Alexandria; the whole class went to Target and picked out toys from their wish list to help give them a Merry Christmas. This was a great experience and the kids learned about helping those that are less unfortunate. It was wonderful to see their excitement about raising money, helping, and picking out toys for their angels. On December 17, we had our annual Holiday Breakfast and Sing! The kids practiced winter and holiday songs and poems all month to get ready for this big event. They did such a good job and the parents loved it! After their performance, they got to enjoy breakfast in the Fellowship Hall with their families. They looked so cute too! Check out some of our pictures on the bulletin board outside the church office. Santa came to visit the FLEEC kids on December 17! Each child got a chance to sit (or stand ) with Santa and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. We sure do love our Santa! The kids enjoyed their class Christmas parties too. The kids brought gifts for their classroom and enjoyed a special lunch from Chick-‐Fil-‐A, which was donated by one of our Dad’s. At the end of the month, we celebrated New Year’s Eve with a special snack and a piñata! What a great end to 2014. We are all looking forward to a relaxing start to 2015. Tiffany, FLEEC Director Who Is My Neighbor? Conference Opportunity Join others in the Christian community on Saturday, Jan. 24th, 8:30am-2:30pm, at Atonement Lutheran Church (9948 Metcalf Ave; Overland Park KS 66212) to explore the definition of neighbor in today’s context. This conference will include a keynote speech by Rev. Dr. Sherman Hicks, the retired Director of Ethnic Specific/Multicultural Ministries for the ELCA and will include workshops hosted by various leaders on topics impacting our neighbors in Johnson County, including an interactive workshop for families with children age 5 and older (nursery available for those under 5). Admission fee is donation of items for Johnson County organizations. Learn more about this opportunity and register to attend by visiting www.atoneluth.org & click the WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR link. Council Minutes from December 8, 2014 Attending were Lori Saar, Linda Rehwaldt, Bob Thesman, Marilyn Moss, Lillian Brown, George Heymach, J.D. Perkins, Pastor Michael Brecke, and Helen Scheuch. Not present were Rick Huyett, Tessa Singer, James Trefz, Kristine Stone and Sharlene Snyder. Also attending was Ron Burkhardt, Chair of the Finance Committee. President J.D. Perkins called the meeting to order. Pastor Michael followed with prayer. Minutes from the November 3, 2014 council meeting were distributed and read. A motion to accept the minutes as written was made, seconded and approved. Ron Burkhardt distributed the Financial Report. The cash balance of $34.985.59 (operating account only) reflects deposits through December 8. The estimated cash needed to pay invoices and payroll by December 31, 2014 is $4.456.08. It was noted that there are three more Sundays in December and Christmas Eve as well as three more Fridays for First Lutheran Early Education Center deposits. Ron acknowledged the work that Muguie Powell has done in preparing the financial reports as well as paying bills. He reminded the Council that he and Muguie are only acting treasurers until the end of the year. In regards to the motion made at the November 3, 2014 council meeting to make the decision about the 2014 contribution to Benevolence Synod a motion was made, seconded and approved to hold all monetary giving until January. It was noted that of the $10,000.00 approved for Benevolence Synod in the 2014 budget only $2,500.00 has been sent to the Synod. There were no written reports from standing committees. Pastor Michael reported for the Worship and Music Committee. The committee is looking into alternative ways to financially support the jazz services. J.D. Perkins reported for the Stewardship Committee. Pledge cards are being returned. Members who had not picked up a pledge card at church were sent one in mail. Pastor Michael distributed the Pastor’s Report for November 2014. After some discussion about a “Needs Bulletin Board” to reflect some of the tasks that members could volunteer to complete to maintain First, without seeking outside help and creating a financial burden to the budget, Lori Saar with Marilyn Moss’ help volunteered to design a bulletin board. Also requested was a need for a monthly calendar insert in the bulletin reflecting all the happenings/activities at First. Bob Thesman volunteered to put together a monthly calendar. Linda Rehwaldt asked the Council members to review the Constitution before the next Council meeting. She also recommended that the Council assist in completing the Parochial Report. Pastor Michael will let the Council know when he receives the paper work for that report. There being no further business the meeting adjourned with The Lord’s Prayer.
