Spiral Contractometer

This recently designed Spiral Contractometer offers the advantage of a new geometry to
solve problems related to an exposed center rod that allows deposition of the applied
deposit to occur on the inside of the spiral. An interior deposit reverses the type of stress to
a very signiÞcant degree and calculates erroneous data much greater than is commonly
realized even when plating nickel, so interior masking is extremely necessary. This new
design provides the necessary masking. Also, it enables spirals to be plated tip to tip and
the plated surface area becomes the same for every spiral. Guessing a surface area value
is no longer necessary. Other advantages include stainless steel inserts and 30% glass Þlled
nylon construction to prevent thread damage. It is a time saver and provides correct results!
Spiral (With Teflon Coating On The Surface)

This spiral is constructed of high grade stainless steel 0.10 inch thick. It has an exact surface
area of 13.57 square inches and is designed to allow plating of the entire outside surface of
the spiral so the surface area isn’t a time consuming guessing problem. Holes are provided at
each end of the spiral to hold the spiral in place and prevent slippage.
Most plated deposits can be chemically stripped so the spiral can be used in a repeatable
manner since Teflon coating is not damaged or removed.
Spiral Support Stand

A stand constructed with Lexon is designed to support the Spiral Contractometer for loading
a spiral and for calibrating and plating it. The stand centers it exactly over the beaker so as
to remain on center throughout the test.
Spiral Blocks (Set of 2)

The polycarbonate blocks have a groove across the top that is used to support the stand
when it is positioned over a hot plate that is used to heat the Pyrex beaker. These blocks lift
and support the stand and Spiral Contractometer when they are part of the plating step.

The Large Anode Basket, size 4in x 5in x 8.25in is of titanium mesh construction to
hold nickel anode buttons. ItÕs designed to Þt into a 4,000ml Pyrex beaker and
centers itself by engaging the top of the beaker with side tabs so as to permit space
at the beaker bottom for a Magnet Stir Bar to provide uniform bath temperature
during the test period.
The Small Anode Basket has a similar design to the Large Anode Basket and is 2 1/2 in. x 3
1/2 in x 8.25 in. for strike plating in a 2,000 ml. beaker it is designed to be used with the
Spiral Contractometer. The anode basket is made of titanium mesh constrction to hold
nickel anode buttons.
