GM Report: Spiral Accepted as Associate Member of NCGA
By Baard Webster, General Manager
A lot has been happening at the
Co-op recently. We are continuing
our strong sales growth, and recently redesigned or ‘reset’ our
center store section. That has allowed us to bring in more new and
unique food items than ever before. We hope you enjoy the
changes.
Even though it won’t be visually noticeable, we received some
exciting news that will create
wonderful long-term benefits to
you, the Co-op, and our employees for many years to come. On
October 1 of this year, after submitting our application and undergoing a thorough examination, we
became an Associate Member of
the National Cooperative Grocers
Association (NCGA).
The NCGA is a business services cooperative for retail food
co-ops located throughout the US.
We have joined 143 other co-ops
which operate over 190 stores in
38 states with combined annual

best practices culled from the other member co-ops. These areas
will strengthen our employee’s
capacity as we continue to grow,
while embracing the new opportunities that come with that growth.
The operational and merchandising best practices will allow us to

sales of over $1.7 time and money by not reinventbillion. The

Holiday De-stress, Not Distress!
Accept imperfection –
don’t set the bar so high for yourself that failure becomes the only
option. Set realistic goals. Stress
won’t change anything except your
health … and not in a good way.
Incorporate family fun time into
your daily schedule – the opportunity to unwind, de-stress, and
laugh together might be the most
effective holiday "anti-stress medicine" you can take.
Smile or laugh – these simple
acts release substances that
counteract stress hormones.

If you stop in to our store -- YOUR store! -- you’ll
find so many different ways to take care of yourself,
gift loved ones, and learn how to create a wellness
lifestyle not only for the holidays, but anytime you
need a little more calming in your world.
As you stroll through Spiral, your first stop is the
produce aisle. Shop color: go for leafy greens, yellows, and oranges of seasonal root vegetables, or pick
up an organic apple or pear. Fruits and vegetables will
provide magnesium, vitamins, minerals, and fiber — nutrients that enhance the nervous system, heart health, and regularity. These are just a
few of the benefits needed to keep our minds and bodies humming along.
Spiral’s amazing assortment of bulk and packaged herbs, spices, and
teas will calm the body and soothe the soul. Some tried and true favorites
are lavender, chamomile, and ginger which also aid in healthy digestion.

Please join us in welcoming Kathryn
Sorenson and Nicole DePalma to the Board
of Directors.
Kathryn and incumbent Board President
Stacey Clark were elected to three-year
terms at the Member-Owner Annual Meeting held Sept. 9. Nicole will be filling out
the term of Mark Manthey, who resigned
from the board effective September 30. The
fourth candidate, Sue Taylor,
will participate in new director training as
an alternate.
Since the election, the Board assigned
each director a specific role (as indicated
under the photo to the left). As a group,
they are currently working toward articulating an Ends Statement for the Co-op.
“Non-Gift” Ideas for Kids and Adults
By Brandis Roush
‘Tis the season for giving, but everyone has so much junk already that creativity is
necessary to show our loved ones we appreciate them without adding to their clutter.
This is easy to do by giving the gifts of membership and experiences.
Give your brothers and sisters, parents, grown-up children, teachers, or local friends
a gift membership to Spiral. If they are already members, give them a Spiral gift certificate. Memberships and gift certificates can be purchased at the checkout counter.
But what about friends and family far away? A Spiral membership might not be
practical for Aunt Martha in Florida. Give out-of-town relatives a membership or gift certificate to
their local co-op. Or you could buy them season passes or tickets to a local museum (children's, science, art, etc.), zoo, or amusement park, a movie theater or restaurant gift card, tickets to an event
they would enjoy, lessons in a skill or craft they have expressed interest in learning ... really, the
possibilities are endless.
So, before you buy your aunt another trinket to dust around or your dad another tie he will never
wear, think about what they might like to DO instead of what they might like to GET.
