You are, undoubtedly, in a difficult position,
but it is not impossible to find meaningful
work with your background. Most often, the
best route to take, is to start small and work your way
up. This means possibly taking a job you might not really
want that also does not pay as much as you would like.
Once you have held the position for some time and you
have shown what a hard worker and how trustworthy
you are, promotions to better positions are more likely.
You will probably have the most luck applying for
online, freelance, and manual labor jobs to start. While
you are looking, it would greatly benefit you to volunteer
around your community—not only will you be helping
others, but it will look great on your resume. You might
also make some great contacts that could potentially
lead you to employment—it is all about who you know.
Consider seeking out local advocacy groups
that help people in your situation, like Goodwill or
Re-Entry Programs. These groups offer job preparation,
placement, retention, and advancement services.
Also, when applying for jobs, submit two or three
personal letters of references from your friends and
family speaking to your character. This will go a long
way in establishing trustworthiness and might be just
the push someone needs to give you the chance you
deserve.
