Senior Center News Update
September 2012
COORDINATOR’S MESSAGE………
Dear Members,
Among the blue skies and sunshine there lurks a hint of fall in the air. Still, how blessed are we to live on the Central
Coast with the beach, mountains and clean air surrounding us? Summer is almost over and we are starting to welcome
back some of our returning “snowbirds”. Here at the center, we are ramping up for our busiest season.
Thank you to everyone who has paid their dues and completed the revamped membership form. We have made an
excellent start. Rosine Rothwell continues to offer her time on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11am to 1pm throughout
September to help you through the process. Do stop in and see her. This will be the third and final courtesy newsletter
reminder regarding membership renewals.
Last month I shared the need for someone to volunteer to take over the MOW program at the center. Not only one person
stepped up to the plate, but TWO of you!!! Please join me in thanking and welcoming Sandy Payton (whose telephone
message made my Monday morning that day) and Howard Lowe (who walked into the center not two hours later, back
from vacation, saying he had heard through the grapevine that I was looking for him)! They have both generously agreed
to share the responsibility. Thanks go to Marlene Flannery, who stepped in during the interim and has trained them for a
smooth transition.
th
Bring out your family and join us for our special Grandparent’s Day Pancake Breakfast on Sunday Sept 9 . Look for
details in this newsletter. Marlene and I had fun creating the menu for you. And…don’t forget, that it is the best deal in
town
As usual, Muncheon Movie was a success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their Toad-in-the-Hole, Ginger Rhubarb Tart
with Custard, and the Blond Bombshells. At everyone’s request, we will be serving a Greek themed lunch and viewing My
Big Fat Greek Wedding – be sure to sign up for another laughter-filled afternoon.
Armchair Topics continues to bring together a diverse group of members, sharing witty, serious, exciting, unusual,
moving, thought-provoking conversations. Last month, it was an eye-opener to hear about the jobs some of our members
have done through their lives. August Armchair Topics will take place this week and will focus on the old TV and radio
shows we all used to watch. That should generate some pretty nice feelings. September’s topic is titled “Generations”. It
has fascinated me that one of our members has met five generations of women in her family above her (one of whom was
a little girl survivor of the Donner party), and five generations of women below her!!! I just KNOW we will be able to hear
some wonderful stories from all of you who attend. And don’t forget October’s Armchair Topics, I have scheduled a
Medicare specialist to come in and answer questions you may have. Look for details in the newsletter.
Our computer team continues to make great progress. They are working a several projects to bring varied opportunities to
the center. A round of applause for Debby Dodds, Jack McKellar, Ayan Patel, Wayne Johanson and Tamima Schwartz.
Thanks to Ken Anderson for assisting with the Tri-Tip dinner. Despite the fact that our entertainment fell through at the last
moment, I think everyone had a fun time with Pictionary. Congratulations to Rita who won $100 and Fran on winning the
beautiful wreath. Unfortunately, the September Dinner will see the last of the monthly dinners at 4:30pm. Please join us
for a very special themed evening called Ports O’Call ~ World Cruise. It will be a little different to our other dinners but we
promise you a lovely experience. Sign up early to reserve your spot – Details in this newsletter.
And…..if this is not going to keep you busy enough….. The Follies will be at the Louden Center with their Copacabana
Finale. Details are further in the newsletter but I do have something IMPORTANT to say: If you are going, please consider
purchasing your ticket from Grey Bears on Chanticleer. They will benefit $3 of the proceeds for their organization. For
more information, you can call (831) 479-1055. You would be supporting two great organizations. Unfortunately, unlike
past years, Follies can no longer offer free transportation as their funding got cut.
Well, the 2012 Olympics are over. Such wonderful camaraderie and a job well done by all. Margaret as usual, is busy
preparing the center for fall. Get ready for our fourth and final art rotation for this year, by the children of our own Parks
and Rec program. Should be a treat!
Just a reminder and a request for your cooperation: The center is used by many people and it really helps me for classes
and individuals to make sure you put things back in their proper places after using them, tables, mugs, cushions,
whatever. Be sure to ask for help when needed and do ask me where things go if you are not sure – Thank you for your
help. (Continued on the next page)
Lastly, the biggest thing that makes for a fun and busy fall is our Annual Holiday Craft Faire. It is all systems go right now
working on the various limbs of this animal! It is a much anticipated event. We did well last year and hope to do so this
year. Of course, it cannot happen without many hands to help lighten the load. I hope that in a few weeks when I post the
signup sheets, you will all be able to lend a hand in some way. I like to think of it as Fun disguised as work instead of the
other way a round
As usual, I will you all well, safe travels, and exciting moments, until next time ~ Darshana Croskrey

We Wish All of Our Birthday Seniors, for This Month,
Best Wishes from The Entire Scotts Valley Senior
Center. Have a Great Month and Remember that You
are Only as Old as You Feel. So, for this month Feel
Very Young! Come and celebrate on the Last
Thursday of the month at 2:00pm. This party is open
to all.
LAST FEW TO SELL: Gift Discount Books
You guys are great! Thank you to those of you who came in over the last few weeks and purchased
some books. Keep it going, only a few more to go. Remember, they are good to the end of the year
and at $12 a book are the best deal in town for treating yourself to new places or old favorite places
to eat and saving some of your hard earned money on excellent retail and service deals.
A BIG Thank You to Our Instructors.........
I would like to thank ALL of the instructors here at the center. They definitely are not here to make the
big bucks. They give service from their hearts to our seniors. Some are professionals in their field,
others share their passion and knowledge in a beloved activity. Each instructor brings their own
individual flair, preparations and modifications to the programs. Teaching people of all learning
capabilities can be a challenge for both teacher and student. Please be patient and always look to the
instructors for direction to move forward in the activities.
Meet Marty Carlson, Ukulele Instructor Extraordinaire
By Margaret Schraft
Ukulele lessons have been offered at the Scotts Valley Senior Center for as long as many of us can
remember. Marty Carlson started offering those classes in 2004 after teaching at Highland Park
Senior Center for two years. He wanted to learn to play the uke so he could join the Ukulele Club of
Santa Cruz. He learned so quickly that his teacher, Patti Maxine, director of the Highland Park Senior
Center and an excellent musician in her own right, asked Marty to take over the class. Marty now
runs the administrative portion of the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz, the largest ukulele club in the world.
Marty grew up in Ukiah, California and went to college in San Francisco. He was a general contractor
in Millbrae for twenty-five years. His family often vacationed in Felton Grove at the family cabin. They
decided to retire in our area because of that connection and the fact that his son and two grandsons
live in the area and could use the services of grandparents.
The beginning class taught by Marty usually has six to eight beginning and/or returning members. I
remember taking the class over a year ago and enjoying it immensely. Many of his students go on to
play every Saturday morning near the Crowʼs Nest restaurant with a uke group. Marty has also
helped out the senior center by providing the entertainment for some of the monthly senior center
dinners.
Starting on Monday October 1st at 7pm, Marty will be offering an evening intermediate ukulele class
that will run through the fall, winter and spring seasons, concluding in June. In addition, after taking a
break for the summer, his beginning class will restart on Tuesday mornings at 10am commencing on
October 2nd. The cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members per session. Martyʼs mission is to
get people to learn to play the uke and join others in playing and having fun doing it!
CPR CLASS UPDATE:
A big THANK YOU goes to John Laurent, our CPR instructor, for another first-rate CPR training
session. Once again, this new set of students left his class feeling confident in themselves, ready to
help in case of an emergency until first responders arrive on the scene. We will keep offering a class
every time we have about 10 to 12 people signed up. Please sign up with myself or the receptionists.
This course is worth every penny of the $30 fee and two hours of your time.
TRIPS:
First of all, I would like to share with you all that two members went on the Safari West trip with Kristin
Ard, her team and the children in their rec program and they all had a fabulous time. Connie Adkins
and Suki Marin arrived on the morning of the trip dressed in their safari clothing, ready for a good
time. And boy, did they enjoy themselves. Check out their photo on the bulletin board. Both of them
are ready to go back!
Many of you have expressed time and time again that you would like the center to arrange some
trips. To that end I have engaged Sharon Carson to help me do just that! Our first try will take place
on Saturday October 20th with a day trip to Golden Gate Fields. At this time we are working out the
details but tentatively, we are looking sign up 30 participants, leave the center at approximately 10am,
returning to the center at around 5pm and try and keep the cost to $64 to $70 ( to include
transportation, food and other perks). If you are interested in learning more, please sign up at the
front desk and we will get back to you with the final details.
