Weekly Newsletter - Community of Joy, ELCA

The Weekly Newsletter of Community of Joy Lutheran Church
Third Sunday after Epiphany
Draw your church together, O God, into the
company of Christ followers. Give us good
courage to follow our teacher Jesus Christ into
every walk of life. May your Holy Spirit inspire us
to give witness to your love wherever you will
send. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Today we welcome the members of the
Rocky Mountain Synod Ministry Review
Team. They join us for worship and a
congregational forum between our services.
Please attend our question and answer session starting at 9:45 a.m. in the
sanctuary. The Ministry Review Team is interested in receiving your
feedback about COJ’s worship and ministries.

CUP OF JOY CAFÉ RETURNS!
Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 2:00—4:00 p.m.
COJ’s Cup of Joy Café will return to the Fellowship Hall on February 7th
from 2:00-4:00 p.m.. Tarrie Burnett from Lutheran Family Services
Refugee and Asylee program will join us to give an update on the winter party where the hats, gloves and other
items we collected in December were distributed. She’ll
also share information about the programs and people she’s been involved
with since her last visit. Starbuck’s ® (courtesy of Daniel Maynard) will provide
the coffee. There will be tea and treats as well. Last year’s donations of
“place settings” (cup, plate, bowl) supplied newcomers for FOUR MONTHS,
and were greatly appreciated. Let’s do that again!
So - mark your calendar and plan to visit the Cup of Joy Café . Please bring a place
setting to donate (cup, bowl, plate). There is a list on the bulletin board in the entryway of
other items that are always appreciated. Please check the list to see if the things you are wondering what to do with when you are doing your spring cleaning could be used to help furnish
an apartment for a refugee family. (gently used items in good shape, of course). There will be a
basket for donations instead of tickets for sale.
See you at the Cup of Joy cafe on the 7th of February!

Lutheran Family Services
Lutheran Family Services (LFS) is proud of its Lutheran
heritage in community service. We have been extending a
healing hand to people for 66 years. We believe that all
people, from the newborn infant to the most elderly person,
deserve to be valued in our community.
Lutheran Family Services is still working hard to place new refugee families into Albuquerque
communities. In our standard apartment set-ups, we are currently in need of:
ª
ª
ª
ª
New or gently used mixing bowls
Full/queen sheet sets
Blankets
Pillows
Please contact Donations Coordinator Sandi Bertholomey at 505.933.7014 or at
[email protected] for delivery times, to schedule a pick-up or if you have
questions.
If you are interested in learning more about LFS or have questions, please contact

Health Tips for Cold and Flu Season
As we all know, cold and flu season has already hit some of us in a hard
way. You can’t avoid every cold going around but you may be able to
minimize some of the risk. Try following some of these health tips, maybe
you can make it through the flu season with few if any problems. Some of
these are common sense and some may take some effort but the payoff, of
staying healthy, is definitely worth it.
ª WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY! This is the most important hint. Other people
sneeze, cough, pick things up off of the floor, use door handles, keyboards and phones
and then want to shake your hand. Germs are everywhere.
ª After shaking hands or hugging someone, be sure to keep your hands away from your face
and wash your hands as soon as you can.
ª Change your hand towels often or use paper towels whenever possible.
ª Clean the places where germs hide. Telephones, keyboards and door handles are the
ª
ª
ª
ª
most common places. Use antibacterial cleaner or sanitizer.
Get plenty of sleep! Not always easy but it is a must.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Don’t wait until you are thirsty; try to drink 6 oz.
of water 4 or 5 times a day.
If you are a vitamin taker, keep this up, especially Vitamin C.
Get some sunshine every day, it will boost your mood and provide you with Vitamin D.
ª Stay active, even exercising or walking whenever possible.
ª Ease up on caffeine and alcohol. They stress your liver especially when you are fighting
infection.
ª Be positive by saying NO. Stay home from work to rest your body and give it time to
recover and also protect your co-workers. Don’t over commit yourself if you don’t feel well.
Cold weather does not cause the flu; germs from others are the problem.
STAY POSITIVE AND GOOD LUCK STAYING WELL!
I am always available. Gretchen Comfort, RN, BS, Parish Nurse
