FROM THE PRESIDENT
Happy New Year SMART Folks!
I wish all of you a great 2015, with
lots of wonderful RVing adventures
with your military veteran friends.
There are a number of changes
planned (needing your vote) to bring
the organization structure into where
we currently are, a transition from an
active and retired military group into
one with all military veterans and
spouses as active members while
we experience RVing and seeing the
country we defend.
Craig Christen
Our new year's resolution for 2015 needs to be to take
the actions allowing this to be a year of rebuilding our
membership--inviting new and keeping our current members.
Your leadership team is working hard on that as are many
of you also. We have created additional advertising in RV &
Military veteran organization magazines. Many of us use the
Traveler magazine as a recruiting tool, and we are ordering
5,000 of the January printed Traveler for your use--call HQ,
cover shipping and they will send them to you. We have been
doing great getting new members and we must continue,
and, we have to hold the members we have.
2015 South Central Regional
May 13-17, 2015 • Rayne, LA
Go to www.smartrving.org for more information
A Special SMART Membership Meeting will be held
at the South Central Regional muster in Rayne, LA, May
13 - 17, 2015. The purpose of the meeting is to vote on
changes to the SMART Bylaws concerning membership
categories and SMART name change. Voting will
also be accomplished via postal mail and e-mail. Our
SMART President, Craig Christen called for this meeting
in accordance with the Bylaws in order to accelerate
membership input into improving SMART. Please
go to the SMART website for a SC Regional Muster
Registration Form or call SMART Headquarters.
PLEASE ALL ATTEND THAT CAN!
I encourage each of our chapters to relook at your activities-we'll share chapter best practices for your use. I still get
reports from new members that they find some of our
chapters not as welcoming and somewhat cliquish--please
ensure that new members have a mentor who brings them
into the chapter fold in a positive manner--ask them to help
and seek their inputs. Our new members are our future-please help them feel that they belong and are valued
members of SMART.
I enjoy meeting fellow RVing veterans and telling them about
the fun I've had in SMART. We are planning to slow down
our RVing, but we will meet lots of military veterans in the
retirement community here in Tennessee--I look forward to
telling them about SMART. You can also do that while you
are RVing across this great country. I encourage you to
share the SMART fun you've had--we can't afford to stay the
best kept secret of military veteran RVers.
By each of us sharing and inviting in new members in 2015,
we can solve our membership level problem this year, maybe
reduce our annual fees, and give fellow military veteran
RVers the opportunities of SMART membership.
Please get active and look at the great musters and caravans
we have planned for 2015--they are a lot of fun and great
opportunities to see the country we defend!

FROM THE

In the December E-News, I mentioned
there were two proposed Bylaw

the name of our Club to the Special

club and (2) redefine membership into
Jon Katin
two categories, Veterans and Nonveteran family Members. This month, I am sharing the proposed
language. For brevity’s sake, I have only included in blue the new
verbiage and will trust that you can look-up the deleted language.
Remember the voting can be accomplished in person at the SC
Regional muster in Raynes, LA, by mail or by e-mail in May 2015.
More specific guidance on voting procedures will follow in the
February E-news.

ARE YOU
CONTEMPLATING
BECOMING A MEMBER OF
S*M*A*R*T?
Jerry Sweeney
ARE YOU A MEMBER OF
S*M*A*R*T?
ARE YOU A MEMBER OF A CHAPTER?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any one of these questions, - this
message is for YOU!
As you peruse this annual printed version of the TRAVELER,
you have just celebrated the holidays with family and friends.
Your Board of Directors hope you have lasting memories
and that you will carry those with you as you travel this great
nation during the coming year.
Keep in mind, some of those ‘family and friends’ may
currently be serving or have served in the US or Canadian
Armed Forces. This may even be YOU! If you/they have an
RV, those personnel are potential members of SMART. Be
sure to “tap the market” and encourage them to join. Once
they join, ask them to join a chapter (there are approximately
50) within the nine regions of the US.
By the same token, if you are a current member of SMART, but
are not a member of a chapter, please consider joining one
or more – as the chapter level is where all of the camaraderie
is – chapter/area musters, potlucks, rolling musters, a meal
at a local restaurant, tours, golf tournaments, etc., etc. Be
sure to look elsewhere within this issue of the TRAVELER for
membership application and a listing of Regional Directors
and the chapters within, along with a POC.
Many chapters have several musters during the year and
each region (except the At-Large Region) holds a regional
muster once each year. Every member of SMART is welcome
and encouraged to attend any chapter or regional muster.
An annual national muster is also held ~ usually in September.
The 2015 National Muster will be 18-22 September at Perry,
Georgia. We sure would like to see YOU there!

FROM THE
CHAPLAIN'S
DESK
After a very long winter, spring is on the
horizon. The spring or vernal equinox is
the day of the year when light and dark
are balanced. True or not, it’s said that
Larry Shields
on this day you can balance an egg
on its end. And by the way, the egg is the universal symbol of
rebirth. (I attempted, but the egg would not stand up). Although
we still have a little way to go to really enjoy the warmth and light
that spring brings, we can begin to think about what we can do
to renew ourselves and to better balance our lives. What better
time than spring to re-group and re-prioritize, and even re-invent
ourselves, and the lives we find ourselves living. Here are some
spring “rituals” to help you get started.
Growing up I knew Mom would start spring cleaning. Some of her
rules were: Get rid of anything you no longer need. If you haven’t
worn it (or used it) for two years, out it goes. We donate clothing
and household items that are in reasonably good condition to an
organization or charity.
This is also a good time to clear out mental and emotional clutter.
When we think of renewal we often think of rebirth; something
old dies and something new is born. Why not use this season of
renewal as a reminder to get rid of things that are weighing you
down and sapping your energy?
Allow yourself to let go of the past to make room for new things
to come into your life. Commit to making decisions you’ve been
putting off. Challenge limiting beliefs about yourself. Think
positively start a practice. A daily practice is a gift to yourself; a
promise to honor who you are. Focus on spring as a time of new
beginnings and resolve to do something you’ve always wanted
to do but never felt you had the time. Simplify your life. Slow
down. As life moves so quickly, surrounding us with the constant
stimulation of the information stream, we need to find a way to
quiet our minds and make quality time for ourselves. What do
you value most in your life? How much quality time do you spend
with the people and the things you care about the most?
I find that spring is a good time to review my spiritual ideas. My
check list contains the following item. Whatever is true, worthy of
reverence and is honorable, just, what is pure, what is lovely and
lovable, what is kind and gracious. Spiritually ideas affect the
thoughts we think. What we feed our minds and think about has
a tremendous impact on how we treat others.

RECRUITER OF THE YEAR 2014 NATIONAL
Well the Chatahoochee Drifters
of the South East Region did
it again 4 years in a row –
2011-David Weis, 2012-AL
HAYNES, 2013-Jackie Weis,
and 2014-AL HAYNES!!!
Al has been a busy person! I
asked him what his goal was?
He replied "I want to be top Recruiter, move over Jay Maust"
GREAT answer !! How did he do this you ask??? Well this is
how:
Outlined below is the procedure that I
use, hoping to recruit folks to SMART.
I always wear my jacket which has
the large SMART logo on the back.
Just recently while at Camping World
with our Rig and wearing my jacket, a
gentleman spotted the logo on the back
of my jacket and asked Pat about it. She immediately handed him
an application and began explaining about SMART and when I
came back to the building, the conversation continued and Pat
sat down and spoke about SMART from the spouse’s viewpoint,
with this man’s wife. We invited them to our next muster in Oct. at
Sugar Mill R.V. Park,so they could experience the fellowship up
close and personal, with the hope that they will join.
I always have my pouch with some copies of the Traveler and of
course applications for membership. Either I leave applications
at businesses (of course after asking permission of the manager
or owner) or I hand them directly to potential members. When
I see someone wearing a military hat, I go up to that person,
thanking them for their service, entering into a conversation of
what branch, and where served. If they have an RV, I ask them
whether they have ever heard about SMART. I spend some time
telling them about our organization and give them an application.
If they do not have an RV, I still give them an app, perhaps to give
to a friend.
My business card is always attached to an application, so they
can contact me with any questions. If my wife is with me and the
prospective member spouse is there, than Pat will speak to the
spouse about our organization. If we can interest the wives then
usually the husband will join.
I have set up a table at the Grand opening of Camping World
of Valdosta and go down a few times during the month to see
if I can speak with a veteran walking around the store. These
folks were very supportive of the SMART organization and
were kind enough to let me set up a table over the weekend to
make the community aware of SMART. I had the opportunity to
speak with quite a few retirees and veterans who showed some
interest in our organization and received positive feedback from
them. That’s it…….I really don’t do anything different from other
members. I now have reached 45.
S.T.A.R. can, S.T.A.R will

The 2014 National was a roaring success.
Cynthia and I had a marvelous year and
it was my privilege to be your President
in 2014.
Although we had a smaller group than
Larry Sockwell
we prefer at Hemet, all attendees had a
great time. The park was super and worked with our staff to make
our week flow from one event to the next. Many thanks to Roy
Allen, SWRD, and all the SW staff that made all of us welcome and
we all became Californians for a week. Thanks to their hard work
day and night, frugal planning and watchful eye of the Treasurer,
SMART even made a surplus, which was a wonderful surprise, part
of which will be used to print extra copies of the January Annual
Traveler so valuable for our recruiting effort. So please get your
order in early for extra copies. Postage must be paid by individuals/
Chapters for the copies.
Plan now to attend 2015 in Perry, GA and join in on the fun of
attending the National and meet SMART Members from all over
the Country. Any questions, please see www.smartrving.org.
Please continue to stay SMART. We need every one of you.

FROM THE TRAVEL
COORDINATOR
2015 ALASKA CARAVAN
(2 Openings) with Nita & Phil Taylor
2015 GREAT RIVERS CARAVAN
We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and an enjoyable
New Year. Now, with being through all parties and presents,
this a good time to start planning your next caravan. We
have three caravans have already been published with two
of them having a waiting list. The third one is the Autumn
in the Appalachians Caravan scheduled to depart shortly
after the National Muster. You can contact Head Quarters for
more information.
There is a rumor spreading that we will also have a caravan
through Georgia prior to National (haven’t gotten any details
about it yet!). After reading through the most recent caravan
evaluations, I noticed that our participants have been
suggesting some interesting possibilities for future caravans,
possible places include; NASCAR, Civil War, Grand Circle,
which I think is good. Hopefully we can implement some of
these suggestions in the near future.
In order to expand the caravan program to maintain five to
six scheduled caravans each year we will need more Wagon
Masters. You may ask, What is a Wagon Master? Well, if you
have ever planned a two to three week RV trip for yourself,
contacting RV parks, finding points of interest, scouting
places to eat, then you have taken the first step in planning
a caravan.
I know, from experience, that training is the key to helping
new wagon masters gain the confidence in planning, costing
and finally running the caravan. If you have any suggestions
on how you would accomplish this task, we are always
looking for great ideas. If this is something that sounds
interesting to you, please contact me at: [email protected].
I would love to discuss this with you. We are always needing
more members to become wagon masters.

575 mile caravan in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and
Virginia. We will start the caravan in Cleveland, GA near Helen;
Cherokee, NC; Asheville, NC; Bristol, TN; Galax, VA; Verona,
VA near Staunton, VA; and end in Luray, VA.
We will begin our caravan right after the 2015 National in Perry,
GA. All participants will receive an Autumn in the Appalachians
Caravan jacket, tote bag, and binder with trip itinerary and
activities. Also each RV will receive a Blue Ridge Parkway
Milepost Travel Guide.
The Autumn in the Appalachians Caravan will view the
beautiful scenery and highlights of the Blue Ridge Parkway,
Smoky Mountains, Appalachian Trail, Skyline Parkway, and the
Shenandoah National Park.
We will begin in Cleveland Georgia near Helen, during
Oktoberfest, which is a re-creation of a German alpine village
complete with cobblestone alleys and old-world towers. We
will generally follow the Blue Ridge Parkway while traveling on
roads that are “big rig” friendly and staying in seven RV parks.
Along the way, we will experience the grandeur of mountain
vistas, waterfalls, and valleys. We will also visit fall festivals,
wineries, and travel the “The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage
Music Trail” which winds through the mountains of Southwest
Virginia where Bluegrass, Old Time, and Traditional Country
music is as beautiful and rugged as the landscape itself.
We will end the caravan in Luray, Virginia, a gateway to the
Shenandoah Valley and the Shenandoah National Park. The
area is noted for its beautiful fall foliage in a 300 square mile
area of hardwoods. The park hosts a large variety of deciduous
trees, including maples, birches, oaks, poplars and gums that
provide some of the most spectacular fall colors anywhere.
While this caravan will surely view magnificent scenery, it will
also provide the opportunity for our members to enjoy the
most important benefit of being S*M*A*R*T members: the
camaraderie of traveling with fellow veterans and their families.
The memories and new friendships will last a lifetime! Please
don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions…hope you will
be able to join us for this fantastic adventure! Don’t miss out…
register soon! Kathy, John, Lynn, and Steve

SMART OHIO VALLEY CHAPTER
The Ohio Valley has been in existence for 25 years
having been chartered in 1988! We are one of the
oldest chapters in the North Central Region, if not
the oldest! Our membership numbers are now
increasing - through the successful recruiting by
members.
We do hold many of our musters jointly with our South Central
neighbors, the Rocky Top chapter. We take turns hosting the
musters and sharing the costs. You will find a lively table of pinochle
players at every muster! Then there are our crafters who are
feverishly finishing up projects. Many different games and Hand
and Foot are among our other activities. Don’t overlook the food at
these get togethers - we have some of the best cooks in SMART!
We support the Wounded Warriors
at Fort Campbell and Quilts of
Valor Foundation at a chapter level
as well as individually. Any current
SMART member is welcome to join
us at any time; we offer free first
year membership in the chapter to
any brand new SMART member.

INLAND EMPIRE SMART
The Inland Empire chapter enjoyed four great outings
last summer: In June we gathered in Peshastin, on
scenic Highway 2 on the east slope of the Cascade
Mountains in Washington State. A delightful series of
activities a tour of the Nutcracker Museum in Leavenworth, a lovely
dinner at the nearby home of retiring Regional Director Ken and
Mary Helen Mayhew, an instructive visit to a local cherry orchard,
where we learned all about cherry business and horticulture, a
fascinating tour of the Chelan County Museum and Pioneer Village
led by a Native American guide, and of course lots of good food and
companionship.
In July we traveled to Wallawa, in northeastern Oregon, where we
rode 3,700 feet up the Wallawa Lake Tramway ride to the top of
8,000-foot Mt Howard, visited the quaint town of Joseph where we
toured the Valley Bronze Foundry (which had the honor of casting
bronze items for the WWII Memorial in Washington DC), and had
the opportunity to attend the Tamkaliks Pow Wow, hosted by the
Wallowa Band of the Nez Perce.
Our outing in August took us to the cliffs overlooking Puget Sound
at the stunning Whidbey Naval Air Station Cliffside FamCamp,
SMART FamCamp of the Year. Activities included visiting the new
PBY museum in Oak Harbor.
Then in September, almost half our members joined the Pacific
Northwest Coastal Caravan down through WA, OR, and CA to the
National Muster in Hemet. And throughout these experiences as well,
we were again blessed with lots of good food and companionship
with our SMART compadres.
Some of our musters planned for 2015 include: · A rolling muster
up the Columbia River from Astoria OR on the Pacific coast to
Pendleton, OR in cowboy country; the 49th annual Bonner County
Farm Tour in Sandpoint ID, featuring traditional agriculture, forestry
and small specialty farm sites; A return to the breathtaking Whidbey

Cliffside FamCamp overlooking Puget Sound. We live in a beautiful
part of the country, with comfortable summer weather, and welcome
all traveling SMART members to join us at any of our gatherings.

FLORIDA BUCCANEERS
Another exciting year for the Buccaneers with plenty
of activities, some old and some new venues, and
lots of fun, friendship, and camaraderie. Although
most of our members live around the central part of Florida, many
come from colder climes who visit our fair state during those more
inclement weather periods up north! We certainly welcome all
SMART members and potential members whether they are here for
a short period of time – or full time.
Our January muster was, once again, held at Lazydays Campground
just outside of Tampa. Not only is this a great park where we can get
reservations during the heavy ‘snow bird’ period, but also our muster
overlaps the opening day of the huge Tampa RV Supershow right
across I-4 from Lazydays. Last January’s muster featured a Chili
Cook-off with nine delicious (and spicy) entrants.
In March, we returned to the Torrey Oaks Golf and RV Resort near
Wauchula FL in the south center of the state. In addition to the usual
activities of potluck meals, card games, and a round of golf, we also
visited Solomon’s Castle, an architectural and artistic wonder and
the Center for Great Apes, a permanent sanctuary for orangutans
and chimpanzees. A number of our members also traveled at the
end of the month to attend the SE Region muster near Charleston.
In May, we ventured to Southern Oaks RV Resort in Summerfield
FL, near the Villages. A lovely location with lots of activities in the
area including a surprising military museum that is definitely worth
a visit.
We continued an enjoyable tradition of hold a ‘gathering’ in July
at Lake Rousseau RV and fishing camp near Crystal River. Since
many of our chapter members leave home during the summer
months, we have an unofficial ‘gathering’ – no real schedule or major
planned activities, just relaxation. We tried out a new idea, namely a
breakfast potluck, rather than a formal breakfast. Each couple brings
enough breakfast items for about 4 people (yogurt, donuts, English
muffins, etc). In this way, no one has to be up at the crack of dawn
to cook for everyone. It worked out so well that we are following this
format at most of our subsequent musters.
We held a September muster at the beginning of the month (plenty
of time for those traveling to Hemet for the National to make the trip)
at Rock Crusher Canyon, also in Crystal River. One of the highlights
at both this muster and the gathering were presentations by one
of our new members, Shari Blissett-Clark, about her non-profit
corporation, Bat-Belfry Inc. We learned quite a lot a bout bats – far
from the scary flying rodents most people imagine; but beneficial
mammals. It turns out one bat can eat over 3000 flying insects in
one night!
Our final muster of the year was our annual event at Paradise Oaks
Golf and RV Resort in Bushnell FL. Every year we join the crowd
at the Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell for the Veteran’s Day
ceremonies. It is a beautiful, peaceful location and we, as usual,
have the largest single contingent at the ceremony.
The coming year promises to be just as much fun, with Lazydays
(January), Torrey Oaks (March), and Bushnell (November) once
again on the schedule. In addition to helping out at the 2015 National
in Perry GA, we are looking for some new venues for additional
musters during the year. Come join us! We also invite you to visit
our new website (www.smartbucs.com) and our Facebook group
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/SmartFloridaBucs/).

in grocery gift cards and over $175 in toys and gifts to the school.
The gift cards and gifts will be used to provide a semblance of
holiday cheer to some students who may not have been able to
enjoy Christmas.
Principal, Dr. Robert Locklear, Counselors, Wendell Acosta and
Yolanda McNair, Social Worker, Lauri Cole and Music Teacher,
Kristina Kinlaw welcomed the Tarheels to their school and
provided the Tarheels with a tour and classroom visit. Dr. Locklear
thanked the Tarheels for their generosity and support of the school
for the second year in a row. The idea for the Tarheels to support
St. Paul’s students Christmas needs came from Mrs. Kinlaw, the
granddaughter of Tarheels Norvell & Hilda Henderson.

We’ve been very active usually holding musters during 2014
in Feb, Apr, Oct, and Dec in Port St Lucie, Vero Beach, Lake
Okeechobee, Fort Lauderdale, Bushnell, Marathon and Key West
and in Mar at the Southeast Regional in Ladson S.C. This year we
had a ten day rolling muster that started in Fort Lauderdale and
ended in Naval Air Station Key West. We always have interesting
outings to local attractions including the National Navy-UDT SEAL
Museum, Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, Riverfront
Cruise on the Intracoastal Waterway, , Everglades Airboat Rides,
Arnolds Wildlife Sanctuary, Nature Boat Rides, McLarty Treasure
and Stranahan House Museums to name a few. We also love to
dine at local restaurants, play card and outside games as well as
have special fun-themed musters during Valentines, Halloween,
and Christmas.

TRI-STATE REBELS
Our last muster of the year and the election of officers
for 2015 was held at Twin Oaks Campground in
Hoboken, Ga. We had beautiful weather the entire
muster with a lot of time outdoors, eating and playing Holey Board,
talking and laughing, fires at night and all of the other things you do
at musters. The Florida Blue Grass Organization was also mustering
so we enjoyed the great Blue Grass Music. It was the annual Big Z
yard sale at the campground as well as all over Hoboken, Ga. on
Sat. All in attendance had lots to do and see.
After our business meeting we had our own annual Auction, which
we moved from January muster to November muster. A much better
location and of course we had a great time buying and selling all of
our treasures, even the ones from years past. We raise money for
our activities and the musters for the following year.
We had our election of Officers at the business meeting and a great
staff has been elected to lead the Chapter for 2015. We went out for
our year end lunch on Thursday as the cold front moved in and the
air turned chilly. We had a great turn out for the muster even with
quite a few absent due to illness. One of our members of almost
two years was in attendance for the first time and was welcomed
by all. Pat and Sue Stanton, also members of the Discovery Club
like several of our members. There were members present that had
been absent the past couple of muster due to various illness and it
was good to have them back.
Our Muster Host did a really great job with the food and planning of
the muster. Hoboken is one of the locations that require planning.
12
Thanks to James Harvey and Hellen Crutchfield, Tom and Hazel
Erickson, and Bill Cummins, your host, for all that they did to make
the muster a true success. It was also noticed that we had discovered
another helping cook. Thanks to Sonny Hallman for the great
biscuits and grits for our Breakfast. Special thanks to the members
that conducted our annual auction. Thanks to those that brought
auction items. Thanks Bill Cummins for serving as auctioneer, Bill
Ward and Bruce Vance for keeping the bids correct and getting the
items to the winning bidders. Thanks also to Joyce Ward and Myra
Reichert, for keeping the bids recorded correct and collecting all of
the money at the end of the auction. This was one of the best if not
the best auction we have ever had. Thanks to all!
Please remember that we
continue to need Host for the
musters. It is a busy time for the
host but a small price we pay
to have great musters. If you
have not helped with a muster,
please sign up to be a part of
a muster in the future. Our next
muster is at Sugar Mill Plantation RV Resort in Ochlocknee, Ga.
(Thomasville). See our web site for directions to our next great
muster and how to make your reservations for the campground
and with the host for food while there, as well at phone numbers for
POC's. Let them know that you will be there.
I want to Thank each of you that had enough faith in me to elect and
allow me to serve my third year as President. As I said, we have a
great Chapter and have elected a great staff that will work hard for
the best interest of the Chapter. I hope to see all of you at our muster
in January. THANKS FOR ALL THAT EACH OF YOU DO TO MAKE

SMART ARKANSAS DIAMONDS
The past nearly five years has been a wonderful
time for one of the newest SMART chapters – the
SMART Arkansas Diamonds. With a great group
of chapter officers and members, the chapter has
grown to 22 families. From day one, we have had
fun!
In the past 54 months the families of the Arkansas Diamonds
have held 18 chapter musters with 170 rigs. We have attended
three South Central Regional musters with 25 rigs – one as a cosponsor this past year. “The Diamonds” as we are known were
recognized nationally as a SMART Outstanding Chapter for 2013
& 2014 periods. We helped 67 SC Regional families have a good
time in Little Rock. As a chapter, we have attended four National
Musters with 37 families coming together to enjoy interacting with
new folks. In addition to chapter musters, we’ve held 19 local
chapter events with nearly 200 families coming together to enjoy
sights and experiences in areas in Northwest Arkansas, Southeast
Oklahoma, and Southwest Missouri. Some of our members have
traveled with the extensive and varied SMART National Caravans
and reported wonderful times and professional muster masters.
The Diamonds have donated over $900 to the Wounded Warrior
Project and donated over $250 and products to the Sew Much
Comfort project that SMART Nation-al enthusiastically supports.

SMART ROCKY TOP CHAPTER
SMART Rocky Top Chapter Our chapter is
chartered in the state of Tennessee and in the
South Central Region. We meet at least four times a
year - our Region’s Muster, a minimum of 2 chapter
musters and the SMART National Muster. Because
most of us live above the ‘freeze’ line, many of our
members travel to warmer climates in the winter months, so we do
not schedule musters during those times. If enough of us are in the
same area, however, we will have an impromptu get together! Good
friends, good food, great conversation along with cards, games &
crafts comprise our musters. What more can you ask of a chapter
muster? It’s not unusual for us to check out the historical areas
within Tennessee such as Sgt York’s Home.
Our first ‘no host’ muster will be held at Defeated Creek near
Carthage, TN in April. June will find us in Bluff City, TN near the
Bristol Motor Speedway where we will visit some small factories. We
frequently visit sites in neighboring states such as the many natural
wonders (caves of) in Kentucky. We especially enjoy traveling
together to the Regional & National Musters. We certainly do see
a lot of the ‘country we defend’. Check the muster calendar on the
HQ website or our website: http://glenmar.us/rocky_top/ We often
hold joint musters with the Ohio Valley Chapter because of the close
geographical area of our members.
Our chapter and its individual members, as well, support the
Wounded Warriors Project and Quilts of Valor Foundation with fund
raising events.
We welcome any and all members of SMART to join us at any time.
We offer a year’s membership free in our chapter to any brand new
SMART members. Our officers are elected for 2 year terms on even
numbered years; i.e., 2014 for 2015/16 officers. Our officers are
Wayne Ballard, President; Joe Duncan, Vice-President and Linda
Ballard, Secretary/Treasurer.

SMART CAJUNS
The Smart Cajuns Chapter is a large (about 75
members from 8 states) fun-loving group that
normally holds a minimum of about four musters
a year in Louisiana and sometimes other states.
I guess you could say Laissez Les Bons Temps
Rouler or Let the Good Times Roll is our Motto, because we do have
fun in our Smart Cajuns Chapter!! One traditional muster is called
the Ya’ll Come and is always held at Poche’s RV ‘N Fishing Camp
in Breaux Bridge, LA when the crawfish is plentiful and in season
during the spring. Another tradition the Smart Cajuns hold after their
January muster is the trip by several of the members to the Valley
along the Rio Grande for two weeks to enjoy a warmer setting.
Our muster fee is $30 per couple and with that we provide three full
breakfasts and three evening meals. Many times we have so much
food, and we do have some good food, that there are more meals
than that during our musters. Attitude adjustment is held at least one
hour prior to the evening meal and members provide snacks on a
volunteer basis along with desserts for our evening meals. Activities
include card games (you name it, we probably play it), Mexican
Train, Rummikube, various crafts, and fishing and golf tournaments
when available in the area.
Depending on the location, the muster host will sometimes schedule
trips or tours in the local area. We have toured Begneaud’s
Manufacturing Co., Lake Martin’s Bird Rookery, various casinos for
luncheons, Lake Martin Swamp tours, Veteran Memorials, and there
are always plentiful places to shop. Local information and brochures
are usually provided for the new areas we visit. Door prizes are
sometimes provided at the musters and the chapter has begun to
do 50/25/25 drawings for Fisher House, a charitable organization.
We have had flag burning ceremonies, entertainment done by the
Sweet Adelines, comedians, and other various local talents in the
area of the musters.
The SMART Cajuns is host to the SC Region-al Muster, May 13-17,
2015 in Rayne, Louisiana and the chapter is on track for preparing
a memorable South Central Regional muster. The food and Cajun
culture in South Louisiana can’t be beat or found any-where else
and this chapter is busy planning some unique experiences for a
muster. There are no strangers to the SMART Cajuns and if you

Alamo members. Alamo’s membership are scattered throughout
the San Antonio area, including a couple of full-timers who were in
attendance.
Like most other chapters, we see each other infrequently at musters
throughout the year so the opportunity to visit during the Christmas
party was well received. Several new members attending for the first
time were also welcomed. Willie and Joyce provided decorations for
the event and “walked us through” a game which generated funds for
our local charity, The Warrior and Family Support Center at Ft Sam
Houston, TX. Willie “recruited” June Heldt to assist in leading the
group in singing Christmas carols prior to our meal. Attendees were
asked to bring a gift, one per rig, and after the meal a “Chinese” gift
exchange was held. Many gifts changed hands several times but, as
they say, “a good time was had by all”.
Alamo’s next adventure is our annual SuperBowl Muster at Skyline
RV Park in Bandera, TX over the SuperBowl weekend. Watch the
SMW Region web-site (www.smwregion-smart.org) for details, send
the application in and come join us!!

SMART FULLTIMERS
Do you live in your RV 100% of the time? Do you not
live in a “stick” house? Do you enjoy the camaraderie
of others just like you? If you answered “yes” to any of
these questions, we have a reserved spot on our membership roster
just for you!
The SMART Fulltimers Chapter is a chapter assigned to the AtLarge Region inasmuch as our members do not live in a specified
“geographical” area, but live in any area they be traveling or parked
in at any given time. Our chapter purpose is to operate a social/
travel club for the exclusive use and enjoyment of its members.
We meet as a chapter once a year at the national muster. The 2015
National Muster will be at Perry, Georgia 18-21 September. We
invite you to come to Perry not only to attend the national muster, but

COMPUTER USERS
Welcome to the world of electronic gadgets! Our chapter was
chartered in 1995 as an At-Large Chapter and took the lead in
providing educational classes to chapter members as well as
National Muster attendees with the ever increasing use of personal
computers and the internet/worldwide web. As time went on and
members became more computer literate, the chapter drew back
from heavy involvement in education. But as technology continues
to evolve, our emphasis has returned to providing assistance to all
SMART members whether it be software or hardware oriented.
The chapter holds only one business meeting a year during the
National Muster. The meeting at the 2015 National Muster will be a
critical one, so if you will be in Perry, please come to the meeting!
The future of the chapter is at stake! We use electronic means to
keep our chapter members up to speed with regard to our mission
and functions. An occasional newsletter is sent out with additional
electronic tips and hints. We do have a website that can be reached
from the Chapter & Region News link on the HQ website.
We charge a onetime fee of $5.00 to join the chapter. Each year
at our annual meeting, we vote on whether an additional $5.00 in
dues needs to be collected to keep the chapter solvent. Hasn’t been
necessary but once in the past 10 years! Consider adding us as
one of the chapters you choose to join within SMART. Our current
officers are Ed Pate, President; Roger Bruce, Vice-President;
Marlene Thomas, Secretary/Treasurer; and Joella Huddleston, OnLine Officer.
SMART NOMADS
Hi all, We would like to welcome any and all to the
NOMADs chapter. We are a fun loving chapter that
gets together once a year at National. We have
our annual meeting and then enjoy our “Attitude
Adjustment” periods catching up with friends and meeting new ones.
Our whole mission is to promote RV traveling as a way of life and to
share experiences with others who aspire to broaden their traveling
horizons. We enjoy traveling across this great nation in search of
food, spirits and adventure, often running into other members and
sharing get togethers, called mini musters, where ever we can.
Getting involved in a chapter is the best way to get the most out of
SMART. So, if you’re considering joining this great group of folks,
please ask any of our members. We’d be glad to help! You can
contact me personally for more information. Happy Travels, Seeing
the Country We Defend

SMART FAMILY
ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM
Additionally contact your Region Director and Chapter President
for assistance and guidance. Any members not currently
members of a Chapter......please consider joining a chapter
by contacting Melissa or Phyllis at Hq (800-354-7681) or email
[email protected] for assistance or recommendations and
guidance.
Greetings from your SMART Family
Assistance Program (FAP) team.
Following are a few items of importance
and hopefully our member’s interest in
staying current with the program.
d. It is especially important for you to visit your Veterans Services
Office (VSO) located in the County, Parrish or Borough etc. in
which you reside. Additionally the Retired Activities Office
(RAO) or Casualty Assistance Office (CAO) at a nearby military
facility. Introduce yourself and familiarize the Member, Spouse and
family members with the services, procedures and assistance the
staff provides. This makes it much easier for members to attend
to matters when the need arises for assistance.
Christian Eck
SMART is chartered and generally recognized as a Social Club
.......but we are so much more and rightly should be recognized as
a Service and Social organization. Many aspects of our SMART
activities are Service oriented to support our membership, military
families, VA and military hospitals and/or fa-cilities as well as
wide ranging community service projects. Our volunteer efforts
such as Sew Much Comfort, The Quilters and Knitters, National
Spouse Advisory Committee, Wounded Warrior projects, various
Chapters efforts and our own SMART Family Assistance Program
(FAP) are in the forefront of our Service commitments.
During SMART National Musters and Regional Musters the
FAP team will hold 2 seminars for the General Mem-bership
and 1 for Region Directors and Chapter Presidents. These
seminars are provided by FAP Team members and tailored to
provide personal presentations plus Q&A sessions regarding
the Program. Attendance at all sessions must be prioritized by
members as being essential and will “fit” a member and spouse
or companion’s “busy” schedule
1. Our FAP team members strongly advise our SMART members
and families to “visit” our SMART website www.smartrving.org;
scroll down the BLUE Menu Bar on the Home Page; locate the
SMART Family Assistance Program (item 9). Open the page and
select....then print the two recently revised posted documents.
Please read or review, understand and then implement and use.
Any questions….please contact SMART Hq. Emails preferred.
a. The Document Checklist contains a listing of essential
documents or items to locate, then file and store for safe keeping,
timely review or updating. This document may be downloaded
and printed as a PDF document from the website Please keep
family members (or others designated) aware of the place of
storage and ensure their name or names and signatures are on
the Access Card for the Trust, Bank or other designated safekeeping location.
b. Immediate Guidance Checklist. This document should be
copied from the website then checked against documents contained in the Document Checklist for accuracy and quantities of
documents. If any Military related items are “missing” contact
the local RAO at a military facility or VSO in the County, Parish
etc. that you reside for assistance in obtaining replacements. For
personal (civilian related documents) i.e. Marriage Certificates,
Adoption Papers, Divorce Decrees etc.], contact your local County
Clerk or seek legal assistance in obtaining documentation.
c. For Family Assistance Program (FAP) team member
contacts please review the list of FAP Team members and
contact information as contained on the SMART website page.
2. John and Kathie Steinbauer also provided some very
important information concerning renewal of DOD Military ID
Cards. He provided website addresses to locate the nearest office
for members to request an appointment for ID card. renewal. These
are not only some of what we often define as traditional ID Card
renewal sites……check them out https://rapids-appointments.
dmdc.osd.mil/appointment/building.aspx?BuildingId=419
or
http://www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl/appj/site?execution=e3s1 or http://
www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl/html/RequiredDocuments.html
More and more it is important to keep all eligible family
member’s ID Cards current. The demands being placed on the
Pass and ID Section of our facilities is increasing and stock of
cards are sometimes depleted. Please check out the contents
of the 3 websites before renewing or updating your ID cards.
When an eligible member makes an appointment “the system”
will notify you about the date, time and location of the nearest
available location for ID Card renewal/updating. Several instances
in the past have been fraught with a Surviving Spouse’s ID Card
expired.....in one case 2 years past. No services by a Veteran’s
Services Office ( VSO), the VA or the local military facility’s
Retired Activities Office ( RAO) or Casualty Assistance Office will
occur until a valid ID card is presented along with other required
documents
3. The latest issues of the military retiree memorandums and
publications; Army Echo, US Army; Semper Fidelis, USMC;
Shift Colors, US Navy; After Burner, US Air Force; Semper
Paratus, US Coastguard and NOAA. (Keep 2 or 3 of the most
issues on file for reference and eventual use). These publications
contain important recent changes/updates to several areas of
upmost interest concerning TRICARE Prime, Standard and
Extra programs, also Burial Benefits ,Presidential Memorial
Certificates, VA Accessability Cards and other timely
information pertinent for Retired and Medical Retirees. Some
of these items or articles are too lengthy and detailed to present
in this advisory......so please obtain a copy of the appropriate
Branch of Service publication, review the content and be
aware of changes.
That’s it for now.....for all the SMART FAP Team we wish you
Happy and beneficial New Year

2015 SMART
NATIONAL
MUSTER
Georgia National Fairgrounds
and Agricenter • Perry GA
18 – 21 (depart 22) September 2015
Make your plans early to attend the 2015 National Muster at
the famed GA Fairgrounds in Perry GA. Located between Exits
134 and 135 directly on I-75, the fairgrounds are conveniently
located for travelers from any direction. Perry is a little less
than 100 miles from Atlanta, and close to Macon and Robins
AFB.
Your registration fee of $200 per 2-person rig includes 2
dinners, 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 1 brunch, and scheduled
evening entertainment; indoor and outdoor games, vendor
booths (including RV sales specials), crafts and used-book
sales, and interesting seminars. Optional extra cost activities
include a planned tour (with lunch) to Macon GA and a
SMART Duffer chapter-sponsored golf tournament.
You might want to
consider spending a
little extra time in this
exciting part of Georgia.
There is an outstanding
aviation museum at
Robins AFB, the Civil
War prison camp at
Andersonville (about 35
miles), the Jimmy Carter
National Historic Site in
Plains GA (about 58 miles). The National Board of Directors
will meet just prior to the National Muster, and their meetings
are open to all SMART members. This is a great opportunity
to come early and meet the members who have volunteered
to lead our Club and discuss matters of interest with them.
Due to other commitments at the GA fairgrounds, the meeting
will be held at the Fair Harbor RV Park, just across I-75 from
the fairgrounds, on 15 and 16 Sep. Additional information is
available from HQ if you want to attend.
Finally, and probably
the most important thing
about a national muster,
is the opportunity to
meet and spend time
with friends from other
parts of this great land
whom you haven’t seen
for a year or more. What
a great chance to renew
those
acquaintances.
As an additional incentive, get your registration in early; all
registrations received prior to 1 June 2015 will be eligible for
an ‘early bird’ drawing for return of your muster fee!
