When I started as a School Psychologist over 35
years ago, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder) was a relatively rarely diagnosed condition.
At that time, in clinical settings the condition was
known as MBD (Minimal Brain Dysfunction).
Before a child was prescribed medication, it was only
after an extensive evaluation that included
standardized testing and observation of the child in
the formal school setting and in the less structured
home setting. In the cases where medication was
clearly indicated, frequently, it was a very hard sell to
convince parents that their child should take Ritalin.
When I retired from School Psychology, 25 years
later, the shift in attitudes on ADHD and medication
was by far one of the most profound changes in
school psychology practice. It was not unusual for
parents to arrive at school with a diagnosis of ADD
or ADHD from their family doctor after a brief and
perfunctory interview. Recent data from the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention showed now that
15% of high school students have been diagnosed
with the disorder, although it is estimated that
approximately 5% truly have the disorder, and the
number of children taking medication for it had
soared from 600,000 in 1990 to over 3.5 million. Not
surprisingly, now newer medications such as
Strattera, Adderall and Concerta were flooding the
market.
A new and upsetting aspect that we were seeing was
the emergence of parents who saw the medication as
giving their child an advantage over their peers when
it came to standardized testing and SAT scores, that
gave them a small boost in competitiveness in Math
and Reading comprehension, to obtain entrance to
desired colleges. And with the diagnosis, frequently
came requests, and often, demands for modifications
in test taking that provided another advantage.
The role of the psychologist now changed from
convincing parents about the efficacy of
appropriately prescribed medication, to battling with
parents to prevent their children being put on a path
that could, and often did, lead to addiction during the
teen years and young adulthood, and in some cases to
psychosis, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations and
anxiety.

And behind the change was the incontrovertible fact
that the drug companies were paying doctors to
deliver positive messages about the efficacy of their
drugs and to advocate on behalf of ADHD stimulants.
Between 2007 and 2012 alone, the number of
prescriptions for ADHD drugs for adults between 2039 nearly tripled.
Almost forgotten is the truth that even in the case of
children who are correctly diagnosed, there are
alternative ways of dealing with the condition, such
as behavioral counseling, social skills training, and
nowadays what psychologists call “mindfulness”,
and that many of us in a Catholic environment would
label “prayerfulness and meditation”.
Interestingly, I have seen over the years that some
children who have ADHD seem to thrive
successfully in the more structured and “mindful”
environment of a Catholic School. Here at St.
Catharine School, the students are reminded, and
given time, to pray frequently during the day, and
to be quiet and reflective and prayerful
throughout the day. Not surprisingly, in this
structured setting, where expectations are clear
and explicit, and where prayer and reflection are
fostered, ADD and ADHD students as well as
students in general, thrive and are more successful
academically and socially.

Some thoughts about
St. Catharine Parish Pastoral
Council
Although the members of the pastoral council may be involved in various
ministries and organizations in the parish, their role on the council is not to
represent these organizations/ministries.
Their role is to help these organizations/ministries and everyone else in the
parish, to keep in mind, and to work towards implementing the vision and goal
of the parish and of the church.
Its role is to guide the parish community in coming to understand and live out
its pastoral mission.
The council will begin by “visioning” – reflecting and clarifying what is our
mission here at St Catharine’s.
It is not a coordinating committee.
St Catharine School will be represented
by an 8th Grade and a Kindergarten
student at all the weekend Masses on the
weekend of Jan 24-25 at St. Catharine and
St. Margaret Churches.
Catholic Schools Week is celebrated nationally and is
a joint project of the National Catholic Educational
Association and the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops. Come celebrate with us!
It is not concerned with day to day administrative operations that are the
responsibility of the pastor, the parochial vicar, the deacons, the school
principal, the RCIA Director, the lay ministers and parish staff.
It is distinct from the financial committee.
The members of the pastoral council were called forth from the parish at large.
The ministry of the pastoral council is to be attentive to the total mission of the
parish.

they may discern the voice of the Holy Spirit and try to be one with Christ to
acknowledge his presence in their midst

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD: All children, ages 4 and up are
invited to attend the Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 10:00 AM Mass in St.
Margaret's Church. There is no fee or registration required.
MARRIAGES: Those planning marriage should notify the pastor at least one year in
advance. The Church sees marriage in one’s own parish as the most proper arrangement,
therefore, people who reside in St. Catharine - St. Margaret Parish have a right to be
married here. Others should receive the sacrament in their own parishes. The bride, the
groom, or their parents must be registered and living in this Parish for at least one year.
Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter Weekend is required as is participation in FOCCUS; a
self-diagnostic inventory designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their

Because of great interest in the topic of human
trafficking, the venue for the next meeting has been

Fr. Padovani will introduce Winifred Dougherty, a
Good Shepherd Sister from Ireland, and Ellen Kelly a
Good Shepherd Sister living in Queens, NY, to
present on the very current and critical issue of
Human Trafficking and what it means for women

Winifred Doherty is a Good Shepherd Sister
from Ireland. Winifred has been the NGO
Representative to the United Nations for the
Sisters and Mission Partners since 2008. She
is a social worker by profession graduating
from University College Cork, Ireland. She
worked in Ethiopia for 16 years empowering the girl child and
young women through education and micro finance programs.
She has experience in community mobilization for
infrastructural development - water, sanitation, walkways and
kitchens. She facilitated the girl child and young women to
confront extreme poverty and the many discriminatory
practices that plagued their lives - FGM, early marriage,
kidnapping of girls, gender based violence, sexual exploitation
and trafficking. As NGO representative at the United Nations
she collaborates with other NGO's in efforts for poverty
eradication, ending prostitution and human trafficking, ending
violence against women and girls and the promotion of the girl
child. She is a director of the Working Group on Girls and is
currently a core team member of the NGO Global Coalition for
Social Protection Floors.
Ellen Kelly is a Sister of the Good
Shepherd currently living in Queens, NY.
She has been the New York Province
Leader since 2008. She has her Masters in
Clinical Social Work from Fordham
University. Prior to assuming the role of
Province Leader she was a social worker
for 8 years and then served for 12 years as Executive Director
of Collier Youth Services in Wickatunk (Marlboro), N.J. She
has continued her interest in empowering young women and
men through her involvement in supporting the efforts of her
religious congregation in programs here in the US and in many
countries around the globe. Sisters of the Good Shepherd are
currently in 72 countries with a mission focused on persons
who are trafficked, forced to migrate, oppressed by abject
poverty or marginalized in any way. She also is active in a
coalition of Catholic religious in the NYC area that provide
education on human trafficking, advocacy and supportive
housing and services for victims of human trafficking .

Women's Bible Study
Women’s Bible Study Group is an opportunity for women of
all ages and all levels of Biblical knowledge to gather in

Dear God, bless our family life and nurture us

to hear your voice, to know their true vocation,

Is God Calling You?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men
who are discerning the possibility that God may be
calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups
are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other
like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation
stories and experiences. The group meetings are not
meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their
vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering
if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your
relationship with Christ along the way.
If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man,
between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself
whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are
cordially invited to attend this month's discernment
meeting on January 25th, from 4pm to 6pm at Saint
Joseph Parish, 685 Hooper Avenue in Toms River, New
Jersey. Join Rev. Scott Schaffer, as he shares his
experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and
concluding with a great meal and conversation.

“I have some good news and some bad news” said the pastor of the parish.
The good news is that we have enough money to cover the monthly bills.
The bad news is; it’s still in your pockets.”
The priest announced that next week he was going to preach on the 17 th
Chapter of St Mark. It was a special message and he wanted everyone to read
the chapter before next Sunday. The following Sunday, he asked how many
in the congregation had read the Chapter. Everyone raised their hands.
“Just as I thought” said the priest “My message today is about honesty.
There are only 16 chapters in St Mark’s Gospel
