January Meeting on Wednesday the 14th!
Sometimes, a crazy editor can get distracted by things like Seahawk games, holiday parties, Alfa Romeos, family and other worthy things… the end result is I shared the wrong
date for the upcoming January Club Meeting. The correct date is actually Wednesday,
January 14th at Angelo’s Restaurant in Bellevue. Event details are found on page 4!
Molti si Riuniscono per una Festa di Natale Meraviglioso
(Many Gather for a Wonderful Christmas Party) The smell of Italian seasonings wafted through the air as
Alfisti gathered for the annual Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Holiday Party.
This year we changed the location to a restaurant in Burien known for outstanding Italian food. Opening up
especially for us on a Sunday in December, we owned the place all evening. Mina Perry, who grew up in
the same Italian town as Carlo & Lino Durante, opened Filiberto’s Restaurant back in 1975… about the same
time the Durante’s opened Alfa of Tacoma.
Around 50 club members gathered for this year’s event and the auction tables were filled with lots of great
gift ideas and fun items. Thanks to numerous club members and great Alfa sponsors, the choices included
jams, wine, Alfa car parts, service coupons, t-shirts, books, miniature cars, and lots more. The first hour of
the party, people visited each other while perusing the auctions items and making bids on the bid sheets.
As the final warning of the auction close was announced, a few of us scurried to make our last bids. Next,
Ron Calkins did his Treasurer role with the support of Gordy Hyde, by counting the sales, and the rest of us
headed for the dining tables to eat.
Served family style, we enjoyed wonderful pasta dishes and salads. With the exception of the tables being
way too crowded, the space, food, timing, and location were excellent. The volume was loud as people
talked and ate. Eventually people were full long before any food ran out.
The club presentations were simple and brought up the club officers, party volunteers, and included a slide
review of all the year’s events.
The last event was to thank everyone for attending, and
for donating and bidding on auction items. But just before all this Joe English explained his choice for this
year’s recipient of the Alfista of the Year Award. Giving
the award to Ron Calkins, Joe explained Ron’s passion
for Alfas and how deep it runs. Ron’s track record of
building, driving, rebuilding, and enjoying Alfas every
day is clear! Congrats Ron!
We all enjoyed the party so thanks goes to Bill & Judy
Gehring, Rita Ingram, Tony & Debi Schmid, Ron Calkins,
Gordy Hyde, Kory Shue, Kristy Affolter, and a few others
for all their efforts putting the great event together.

Lake Union. Last year’s party was interesting, on the edge of Belltown, at Spitfire. The parties I have attended have
all been enjoyable, regardless of the
venue. The committee is already talking
about next year, and of course would
welcome not just some input about the
location, but more assistance too. You

Since becoming president, and having my phone
number and email address in the Alfa Owner, I have
received a lot of interesting phone calls. One of my
favorites was from a person in Port Townsend who
thought he had a Veloce engine and was thinking of
making it a wall display. The most recent, maybe
something someone in the club can help with, was
from a previous owner, Norm Bianchi, trying to find
his old spider. It was a white 1974 with black interior
and a green serpent on the hood. In the photos I
have seen it looks very good, and may have a roll
bar. He called me because the person he had sold it
to thinks it may have been sold to someone in Washington. I’ve checked with the usual suspects, Shannon Low at Park Place Motors, and with Cosmopolitan
Motors in Seattle, to no avail. Does anyone know of
it? I don’t have a time frame as to when it may have
been here, and the serpent may be gone, but the VIN
ends in 3286. Please let me know if you have any
information.
Another Holiday Gala has come and gone, and by all
accounts, it was successful. Filiberto’s was a good
location, and Mina worked hard to give us a good experience. Growing up with Carlo and Lino in Italy,
she probably should have been on the program, as I
understand she has some good stories about them,
but we missed the opportunity. Oh well, there may
be another chance.
Being one of the “committee”, I thought about the
Gala often in the last few months, which led to memories of the varied locations of previous parties. I
think the first I remember was at Salty’s, in West Seattle. A fun location was the Petroleum Museum on
Capitol Hill. There was one at a great Italian restau-
Another LA Auto Show has come and
gone, and of course, Alfa was in the
news. Sergio Marchionne says that all of
the new Alfas will be rear or all wheel
drive and all will “share high technology,
high performance, and drop-dead gorgeous design and style.” As we have
heard, the Mazda/Alfa spider deal has been terminated, and now the edict is that all Alfas will be built in
Italy. It sounds like there is a lot of Alfa-Maserati cooperation with
a core team of 600 engineers currently working on
them. Marchionne says the next model, the midsize
sedan Giulia, will be presented June 24, 2015, Alfa
Romeo’s 105th birthday. It may be on sale in Europe
about a year later, and to us available by the end of
2016. I hope it looks as good as renderings I have
seen and that it will be affordable.
This platform (called Project 952) will also be the
base for the other midsize models. A midsize SUV is
supposed to come out in 2016. Later will be a
midsize roadster, larger than the 4C (of which two
have recently been spotted in Andalusia, Spain, perhaps being filmed for commercials), and a midsize
coupe. Also allegedly being planned are a large A8
type sedan, a large SUV (ugh, but they pay the bills)
and a compact hatchback/sedan and/or coupe. All
by 2018. Some more information should be coming
at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
I hope to see you in January. Saturday, January 3, is
the “Anti-Football” Drive, which should be fun, and on
the normal second Wednesday of the month, at Angelo’s in Bellevue, Peter Imhoff, who has done some
fabulous Alfa Romeo restorations, will be presenting. Happy New Year!

I know I love this magazine for the tons of Alfa Romeo content, but now Auto Italia is celebrating its 20th anniversary
as the only worldwide publication dedicated to Italian cars
and is offering some special deals to readers in the USA: A

The 5th album / CD release by the indie group from
the UK named The Popguns is called Pop Fiction.
The Popguns have been around since 1985 but until
now they didn’t specifically attract the Alfa Romeo
community very much but this album changed that.
One of the songs is called Alfa Romeo and in the
song the chorus says, “You. Unimaginably cool on
the boulevard. In your Alfa Romeo, oh, oh.” Even
without our favorite car mentioned, it’s a nice song

How did I miss out on the Al Pacino movie from 1978 named
Bobby Deerfield? Am I the only Alfa fanatic that never saw
this? Pacino plays a race driver in the Martini liveried Alfa Romeo BT46 during the 1976 season. Off track, he drives a
cream colored Alfetta GT. I did just buy the DVD so if you
want a complete collection of Alfa related items, you’ll need to
hit up Amazon.com like I did.
Fiat & Alfa Romeo of Kirkland is still awaiting their first Alfa
Romeo 4C but they are hoping it will arrive by mid January.
My money is on: It arrives when it arrives and not a minute
before.
On June 24th, in Italy, Alfa Romeo is planning to roll out a new
car along with announcements
about the future projects. Until
then, its fun to see the prospects
of cars like the Alfa Romeo 6C,
an interesting rear wheel drive
coupé powered by a twin-turbo
3.0-litre V6 with around 500 HP
targeted for around 2017. This

January Club Meeting
Wednesday 14th
On Wednesday, January 14th, we will gather for our Club Meeting at Angelo’s
Restaurant with a special guest speaker. If you have ever seen Michael Kay’s
stunning Giulia Super or GTV, then you’ve seen the outstanding work of Peter
Emhoff. Peter will be the guest speaker sharing stories of his art work that he
calls car restoration.
Peter’s work is recognized as exceptional by customers and concours judges
alike. Though he’s done other cars, we’re most familiar with Michael’s cars
which have been at Viva Italia, the All Italian Car Gathering, Concorso Italiano,
and Alfa Conventions where they’ve won awards.
Join us on January 14th and listen to Peter tell a few stories of what it takes to
make cars as perfect as he does.


New Year’s Anti Football Drive
January 3rd
Our very popular annual New Year’s Drive will be held Saturday, January 3rd giving people a chance to see
a little football on New Year’s Day.
Our start point will be the same place as before, the Starbucks near Mill Creek exit from I-5 just north of
Lynnwood.

As the route leader, I’ll hand out route guides at
our driver/navigator meeting prior to heading out.
Our drive takes us on scenic roads up to Skagit
County to our host, Fred Schuddekopp at Autostrada in Anacortes. Fred usually has a variety of road
and race cars in differing stages of build as well as
a few rare cars for us to enjoy. We’ll have a lunch
at Fred’s, and then we’ll also get the chance to visit
Ingram Enterprises. This is also an amazing treat
as Wes Ingram and Herb Sanborn have a worldwide reputation for being SPICA experts, as well as
great engine builders, and overall Alfa car guys.
On top of that, they may be the two nicest guys in
the Alfa club. I’m not sure, but we can ask them
when we see them.
The timing for the after lunch is up to you to return
home when and how you’d like.

They Say Good Things
Come in Threes
As March approaches, hopefully
people have more free time than
they do in the busy days of summer, or the busy holiday season.
On Saturday, the 7th of March, you
will have a chance to tour some
great cars.
Many of the greatest cars in the
world reside in museums in far corners, or private collections
throughout many countries. Getting them to come to you would
not be easy. Luckily we have a few
locals who have great car collections in Bellevue that are world renowned. On March 7th, we have
the opportunity to tour three collections throughout the afternoon.
Jon Shirley, Greg Whitten, and
Bruce Wanta have agreed to allow
us to visit their exquisite “garage” spaces, which are all
located within walking distance of each other.
Jon Shirley started collecting cars in the early 90’s with a
few fantastic Ferraris including the Ferrari 375 MM Rossellini car that won Best of Show at the 2014 Pebble Beach
Concours. Jon’s Alfa passion runs deep with his 1932
8C2300 MM Touring, 1938 8C2900 B Lungo, and the historic 1934 P3 that Nuvolari drove to an amazing victory at
the 1935 Grand Prix of Germany and Jon will be there to
answer questions you may have. The other, non-Alfa cars
are rather amazing as well.
Nearby is Greg Whitten’s freshly remodeled car storage
space and his wonderful mix of cars. Greg, an early key
player in the success of Microsoft now shares his time with
his work, and a growing family, but will take time to be
with us, and his cars on this day.

A few of you may know Bruce Wanta, but his car collection
is also a few steps from Greg and Jon’s and is not to be
missed. Bruce has a knack for finding cars that are both
rare, cool, and extremely low mileage. He also enjoys
many other really fun collectables… they are all worth a
visit by themselves!
Since this is a really special treat, we have to keep things
under control so I will open an online Registration tool for
people to sign up. Additionally, we’ll have a $10 fee established per guest with the money going to the charity of
choice of our three hosts. It’s been 6 years since we’ve
had this chance, so do not miss out. I will have the link to
the registration and more specifics in next month’s newsletter. Until then, circle this date in Red on the cheesy
calendar you got for Christmas.

AROO / NWARC Joint Club Drive
May 15-17
After Oregon legalized marijuana last Fall, following Washington’s earlier lead, members of
AROO contacted NWARC leadership about planning a “joint”
chapter tour. I readily agreed
to help coordinate efforts with
Dennis Torgeson.
The dates we selected are May 15, 16 and 17. Initial
thoughts are to meet the southern contingent for
lunch in Packwood (or thereabouts) on Friday and
then continuing up to Ellensburg in the afternoon.
Accommodation rates and location are yet to be finalized, but after the Holidays, AROO representatives
will be negotiating for a block of rooms for us for
both Friday and Saturday nights. NWARC folks who
work on Friday could join us after coming directly
over I-90.
Saturday would be the “touring” day, with route yet unplanned, but would likely include heading up the Columbia and taking Alfa-routes around Central Washington, returning in time for happy hour and dinner again
in Ellensburg. Dinner will be at a different eatery than the venue for Friday night.
On Sunday, the AROOers will head south utilizing a route their leaders have planned. NWARC folks who need
to get right home can take the expedient path over I-90, while others may wish to participate in a designated
route over Blewett and Stevens Passes.
While still in the planning stage, I hope you all will circle the dates on calendars and intend to join us on this
Spring adventure. If you know already that you will participate, have questions, and/or wish to be notified as

heated garage (the body is rust free),

of Tacoma to bring it up to good running condition. The car now runs and

Interior and body are basically in original condition with minor detailing required. The car has been well maintained since I bought it in 1989, and I
