St. Charles Borromeo Parish January 25-31, 2015 Catholic Schools Week 1 FROM our PASTOR ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH FAMILY January 25, 2015 BE STRONG ! Last Sunday’s Seahawk’s game was something else. After being behind for most of the game they finally pulled ahead in the last couple of minutes of the regular game and then finally won in first couple of minutes in overtime. Sometimes we Christians can feel that we are behind and that the outcome looks pretty grim. Jesus has assured us, however, that all will be well. But we have to do our own part. In our society today we have more choices than people have ever had. In our country we also have the ability to custom design and order cars, clothes and many other items. We don’t normally think in this way with regard to ourselves. The reality is we not only have the ability, but are actually called to grow and mature, that is to say, to take responsibility for becoming the unique person God has created us to be. God is love. That means that God is a relationship of self-gift. The Father gives all to the Son who receives it and returns it to the Father through the Holy Spirit. We are created in God’s image and meant to make a gift of our self to both God and neighbor. And so Jesus instructs us to love God and love our neighbor. Indeed God has created us in love, by love and for love. Learning how to love, or to make a gift of one’s self to God and neighbor, is a life- long process. Learning how to love enables us to become the unique person God has created. We can only become that unique person if we are willing to act and take responsibility for who we are becoming. Through the Church, Christ gives us all that we need to do so. By baptism we are united to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ calls us to follow him so that we can become his disciple both in name and in fact. When we fall short, fail or simply turn aside from following Jesus, the sacrament of Reconciliation enables us to refocus and start again to grow in virtues such as humility, patience, kindness, generosity. The celebration of Mass enables us to change. To move from a lover who is hesitant, fearful or not focused, to one burning with love. How does the Mass do this? During the Mass we are united by the Spirit to Christ in his death and resurrection. Just as the bread and wine are changed, so that Christ is truly but sacramentally present, so we too are changed by the Spirit who enables us to “become one body, one spirit in Christ.” This coming Lent we invite you to join in reading LIVING THE MASS: How One Hour a Week Can Change Your Life. I invite you to come to each Mass having prayed and thought about this question, “During this Mass, in what way do I want to ask the Holy Spirit to change me?” READINGS Monday, Jan. 26: 2 Timothy 1:1-8; Mark 3:22-30 Tuesday, Jan. 27: Hebrews 10:1-10; Mark 3:31-35 Wednesday, Jan. 28: Hebrews 10:11-18; Mark 4:1-20 Thursday, Jan. 29: Hebrews 10:19-25; Mark 4:21-25 Friday, Jan. 30: Hebrews 10:32-39; Mark 4:26-34 Saturday, Jan. 31: Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19; Mark 4:35-41 Sunday, Feb. 1: 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Deuteronomy 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 7:32-35; Mark 1:21-28 MASS INTENTIONS Monday, Jan. 26: 9 a.m. Mass — Elly Racek + Tuesday, Jan. 27: 9 a.m. Mass — Florence Walker + Wednesday, Jan. 28: 9 a.m. Mass — Robert & Marilyn Hirsh (spec.int.) Remember...Your donation is 100% tax deductible. With your help, we can continue our tradition of being one of the highest performing and affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Please contact the school Development Office to make a donation: 253-564-5185 ext. 3040. 5 Mr. Dan Hill, Principal Dear St. Charles Parishioners, Throughout the weekend, our school will be participating in the parish Masses to celebrate the kickoff for Catholic School's Week.
