BE STRONG !
Last Sunday’s Seahawk’s game was something else. After being behind for most of the game they finally
pulled ahead in the last couple of minutes of the regular game and then finally won in first couple of
minutes in overtime.
Sometimes we Christians can feel that we are behind and that the outcome looks pretty grim. Jesus has assured us,
however, that all will be well. But we have to do our own part.
In our society today we have more choices than people have ever had. In our country we also have the ability to custom
design and order cars, clothes and many other items. We don’t normally think in this way with regard to ourselves. The
reality is we not only have the ability, but are actually called to grow and mature, that is to say, to take responsibility for
becoming the unique person God has created us to be.
God is love. That means that God is a relationship of self-gift. The Father gives all to the Son who receives it and returns it
to the Father through the Holy Spirit. We are created in God’s image and meant to make a gift of our self to both God
and neighbor. And so Jesus instructs us to love God and love our neighbor.
Indeed God has created us in love, by love and for love. Learning how to love, or to make a gift of one’s self to God and
neighbor, is a life- long process. Learning how to love enables us to become the unique person God has created. We can
only become that unique person if we are willing to act and take responsibility for who we are becoming. Through the
Church, Christ gives us all that we need to do so.
By baptism we are united to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ calls us to follow him so that we can
become his disciple both in name and in fact. When we fall short, fail or simply turn aside from following Jesus, the
sacrament of Reconciliation enables us to refocus and start again to grow in virtues such as humility, patience, kindness,
generosity.
The celebration of Mass enables us to change. To move from a lover who is hesitant, fearful or not focused, to one burning
with love. How does the Mass do this? During the Mass we are united by the Spirit to Christ in his death and resurrection.
Just as the bread and wine are changed, so that Christ is truly but sacramentally present, so we too are changed by the
Spirit who enables us to “become one body, one spirit in Christ.”
This coming Lent we invite you to join in reading LIVING THE MASS: How One Hour a Week Can Change Your Life.
I invite you to come to each Mass having prayed and thought about this question, “During this Mass, in
what way do I want to ask the Holy Spirit to change me?”

SOUND SYSTEM UPGRADE!
Thanks to your generosity we have been
able to upgrade our church sound system.
Last week many told us that there is a
definite improvement. If you are not
hearing clearly and distinctly where you sit
please let Mr. Mike, Fr. Dean or Deacon
Steve know so that we can fine tune the
system. Also, know that the parish has
excellent hearing devices for your use
during Mass. Just ask one of the ushers in
the main vestibule and they will be happy
to get one for you. Fr. Mike

CATHOLIC ADVOCACY DAY IS THURSDAY, MARCH 26th
PROCLAIM JUSTICE & LIFE FOR ALL
The purpose of Catholic Advocacy Day is to meet with our legislators to advocate for
people who are poor and vulnerable based on Catholic Teaching. The priority issues can
change depending on the current legislative agenda. The areas we will address may
include 1) economic justice, 2) housing, 3) access to health care, 4) child welfare, 5) life
issues, 6) environment and 7) criminal justice.
There will be buses for the trip to Olympia. Bus locations will depend on registrations.
All bus departures will be early in the morning (6 am to 7:30 am depending on the
location). At this time we anticipate stops in Tacoma.
Please join us for Catholic Advocacy Day in Olympia on Thursday, March 26th! Our
theme is Proclaim Justice & Life for All. Our time together will include: Briefings on
legislative issues and stories of how advocacy is making a difference, Mass, appointments
with legislators.
In order to plan effectively (make legislative appointments and reserve buses) we need
to hear as soon as possible but no later than March 5th if you will be attending Catholic
Advocacy Day.
PLEASE REGISTER BY CALLING 206-223-1138 or on-line information can be
found on the following websites: www.ccsww.org, www.thewscc.org, www.ipjc.org.
Our RE Junior High Youth Group will once again be collecting loose change after the
Masses on Super Bowl Sunday, February 1. They plan to donate their proceeds this
year to Heifer International, a nonprofit charity organization working to end hunger
and poverty around the world by providing livestock and training to struggling
communities. SAVE your change and help these young people make a difference.
The St. Charles Borromeo School’s Annual Fund is an essential part of funding for
our school. It was created to help bridge the gap between our tuition, and the actual
cost of educating a child. The benefits of the Annual Fund are twofold: we are able to
reduce tuition for families who may have difficulty paying for a quality Catholic
education and offset annual tuition increases for EVERY family. Remember...Your
donation is 100% tax deductible. With your help, we can continue our tradition of
being one of the highest performing and affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Please
contact the school Development Office to make a donation: 253-564-5185 ext. 3040.

Mr. Dan Hill, Principal
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Throughout the weekend, our school
will be participating in the parish Masses
to celebrate the kickoff for Catholic
School's Week. The first thing we do each
year is show appreciation to the parish
community for the support you show our
wonderful school. We will have our
appreciation breakfast after the 8 and 10
a.m. Masses over in Feist Hall, and it is
FREE! Our school staff will be on hand to
cook, clean, bus tables, and greet
everyone. Bring your appetite.
Next Saturday, January 31st, we'd like to
invite you to our school musical "The
Sound of Music" dinner/theater
show. The musical is fantastic and the
dinner/theater tickets are just $20. If you
want to come to the other two shows, it's
just $5 per adult ticket, and $3 per
students. Please call Mrs. Rousseau in the
school office for tickets or questions about
performance times.
On behalf of all of the staff here at St.
Charles, we thank you for your support of
the school, and hope that you can join us
for breakfast! Did I mention it is FREE?
Finally, please remember to keep our
students, and teachers, in your daily
prayers. We have lots to be thankful for,
but we also have lots of families in need of
your special prayers.
Sincerely, Mr. Hill

with our parish
Lenten project!
This year at Lent the parish will read:
LivingtheMass:
HowOneHouraWeekCanChangeYourLife
Divided into six segments, each week you have an opportunity to explore an area of the Mass and
how you can incorporate it into your daily life. Throughout Lent you will explore: what Christians
are called to do and be, what qualities and skills are needed to live as Christians, and how one
hour a week we spend at Mass, should, and will change your life. Small groups are encouraged as we all learn more by sharing our stories and experiences. For more information on the book please see
www.loyolapress.com/living-the-mass.htm.
We need your help with:
1) Folks to help sell the books in the vestibule before and after all the Masses on:
February 7th & 8th at 5, 8, 10, 12:30 & 5:30 Mass in the vestibule
February 15th at 8, 10, 12:30 & 5:30 Masses
Ash Wednesday February 18th at 9, noon & 7 Masses
We have ordered 300 books and are asking for a $5 donation.
2) Group leaders for small group study at the parish. Like previous years we will provide opportunities to gather with other parishioners to discuss the book and share experiences on
how one hour a week we spend at Mass, should, and will change your life.
3) Put together a group of friends, people you sit with in the pews, other parishioners you
know from school, coffee or dining places, sports, etc. This will provide you with an opportunity to better know each other as well as grow in your spiritual life. A six week study
guide will be provided.
To help sell the books at Mass or form a group please contact
Renee at [email protected] or 564-5185 ext. 3037 for more information.
