Owners of the strip said they were contacted Monday by a company looking to shoot at the property and learned Wednesday morning, as crews arrived, that the two Grammy award-winning artists. The LaGrange-Troup County Drag Strip is tucked away in a remote area of the county, a few miles from the Kia plant, and that was part of the appeal that led Grammy award-winning artists Usher and Ludacris to film a music video there .Wednesday. Drag strip co-owner Larry Hall said a representative from a promotion company contacted him last week about possibly renting the drag strip to shoot a video. Hall said the company sent someone Monday to check out the location and he was told it was what the company wanted. Ludacris Usher It wasn’t until Wednesday morning, when crews arrived, that Hall found out the video shoot was for the two high-profile musicians. The promotion company “said this was what they were looking for, and here they are,” Hall said. Usher, 33, is a singer, songwriter, dancer and actor. His 2004 album “Confessions” was certified diamond with 10 million copies sold. Ludacris, 35, started his rapping career in Atlanta and has acted in Hollywood movies including 2011’s “Fast Five” with Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Both artists received a Grammy in 2004 for the collaborated song “Yeah!” with rapper Lil Jon. Drag strip co-owner Hosea McDaniel said the video shoot was great for the community and good exposure for the track, which he said many local don’t even know is there. Usher and Ludacris were on the drag strip from 10 a.m. until late Wednesday night shooting for See VIDEO | 2A Hawkes Children’s Library to celebrate 90th birthday Jennifer Shrader Staff writer Hawkes Children’s Library partied will party on on Saturday like its 1922. A ceremony marking the library’s 90th birthday will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the historic building, across from City Hall. The event is free. The event will be highlighted by a visit from Mike Morehouse, who impersonates library founder, Dr. A.K. Hawkes. “Dr. Hawkes” will be there at 3 p.m. to blow out the candles on the libraries birthday cake and at least five 1920s vintage automobiles will be on hand. The Junior Friends of Hawkes Libary will sing. “It will be a block party,” said Nanci Hendrix, library volunteer. The library was built by and named for Dr. Albert King Hawkes, a leading optician in the U.S. in 1894. He sold glasses from Atlanta that were shipped to more than 8,000 towns across the country and had an interest in the education of children. After a visit to West Point, he gave the West Point Womans’ Club $100 for books, and soon was convinced to bequeath the money for a children’s library in the city. When Hawkes died he left about $7,500 for a library building. It was named Hawkes Children’s Library as requested in Hawkes’ will, but later changed to Hawkes Library so as not to discourage adults from using it. In 1991, the library was put on the national register of historic places. Inside the building still looks much as it did in 1922 and is one of the few places were patrons still check out a book by signing their names. Second ‘Troup Trained’ class graduates program Jennifer Shrader LHS homecoming court and underclassman representatives Staff writer Eleven more Troup County residents are ready for the workforce. The second “Troup Trained” class graduated after a seven week program at West Georgia Technical College. “I hope this is the second of many classes to come,” said Ricky Wolfe, Troup County Commission Chairman. He charged the graduates to be an example for future classes. “You’re an integral part in the continuation of the program,” he said. The Troup Trained program was born out of the county’s workforce development initiative and is meant to teach “soft skills,” like showing up for work on time, dressing appropriately and behaving in the workplace, things that may not be taught in a regular classroom. LSPA to host picnic theater Matthew Strother News editor Josh and Shannon New recently traveled wthe LaGrange Daily News to Gettysburg, Penn., to visit the sacred battlefield. The Gettysburg battlefield was the scene of the largest conflict ever fought in the Western hemisphere. This photo was taken at the most historic covered bridge in Pennsylvania, Sachs Covered Bridge, in Gettysburg. Sachs Bridge is also considered the most haunted covered bridge in America and was crossed by both armies, Union and Confederate, during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. sss ‘On the road’ features photos of residents with a copy of LaGrange Daily News at an out-of-county location. (AP) — The Selma City Council voted Tuesday night to stop work on a monument in honor of Confederate Civil War General Nathan Bedford Forrest at a city cemetery. The council voted 4-0 with two members abstaining to stop all work on the monument to Forrest until the courts decide whether the city or a Confederate heritage group owns the section of a city cemetery where the monument would be located. A monument honoring Forrest was the cause of demonstrations by civil rights groups about 10 years ago when it was located outside a city building near downtown. It was then moved to a section honoring Confederate war dead in the city cemetery. But Forrest’s bust was removed and apparently stolen from atop a 7-foot-tall granite monument earlier this year, prompting new protests and calls by civil rights advocates not to replace it. The vote came after protesters marched to City Hall and gave a series of impassioned speeches at a city council work session. Detractors say Forrest traded black people like cattle, massacred black Union soldiers and joined the early Ku Klux Klan. His defenders dispute much of that and counter with stories that depict him as a protector of slave families and defender of the weak who resigned from the KKK. A member of the group Friends of Forrest, Pat Godwin, said she feels the protests have been an effort to obscure the police investigation of the disappearance of the bust. “It’s all smoke and mirrors to divert attention from the issue of the theft of the bust,” Godwin said. The council had earlier indicated it would allow people to speak on the issue at the work session, but would not vote on the racially sensitive issue during the meeting. Council members changed their mind after activist Rose Toure, a leader of the protests, and other speakers urged the council to go ahead and vote. Council member Bennie Ruth Crenshaw moved that the council order all work on the monument stopped after city attorney Jimmy Nunn said he had not been able to locate a deed to the Confederate section of the cemetery. “Let’s stop the building and move this Nathan Bedford Forrest issue out of the way,” Crenshaw said. Another council member, Susan Keith, abstained from the vote. She said earlier she needed more information before she could decide how to vote. She said she would also like to wait until the investigation of the theft is completed. “There’s just too many discrepancies,” she said. Video son of Hosea McDaniel and a fan of the musicians. He came to the track after work to watch the video being filmed after his father told him the two stars were at the location. “We get to see the work of these two megamillionaire stars … and they’re here in Troup County.” Matthew Strother can be reached at [email protected] or 706884-7311, ext. 229. Monique Newsome, 41, is accused of cutting a man on the side of the victim’s head with a steak knife at the Budget Inn, 100 Hill St., in the couple’s room. Newsome said the victim confronted her, accusing her of taking money. During an argument, she shoved the victim and “thought” she grabbed an object and “vaguely remembered hurting him” when she struck him with it, according to a police report. Officers said the victim tried to call 911 after the incident and Newsome took the phone from him. The victim was treated at the scene by LaGrange Fire Department EMS personnel. Officers arrested Newsome on charges of aggravated assault under the family violence act, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and interfering with an emergency call. It’s a phrase we coined and we compare the concept to that of Chastain Park” Amphitheatre in Atlanta, said LSPA board director Debby Baker. Tables will be setup in the LSPA Black Box Theater and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for patrons to bring in picnic suppers and beverages of choice. They will have until 7:15 p.m. to finish their meals and asked to have all food, utensils and drinks should be stored away before the show starts at 7:30 p.m. to not distract the actors. “We think this will offer an opportunity for our guests to enjoy a meal while visiting with each other before the play begins,” Baker said. “We haven’t done this before, but it sounded like fun, so we’re going to try it.” Ticket prices for the picnic theater are still the same - $15 for adults and $10 for students. There will be limited seating because of the tables, so reservations are required. Picnic time will be available before each performance of the show, which runs Oct. 4 to 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct.7 at 2:30 p.m. Reservations may be made by calling LSPA at 706-882-9909 or going by the LSPA office at 214 Bull St. to a home in the 1000 block of Elm the driver’s area.
