Very recent changes to the hospital may not be reflected in this guide. Your Ambassador can give you an up-to-date map—just dial ext. 28 from any hospital phone. Activities for Patients and Families Activities for patients and their families are listed in the Hospital Happenings newsletter that should be posted on the door of each patient room. The newsletter is also available at Volunteer Services on the first floor, or call ext. 56180 for a copy. Activity Centers There are many activity centers in the hospital. Each has board/video games, toys, and arts and crafts supplies. Organized events (bingo, pet visitation, arts and crafts, etc.) take place on the first floor. A calendar of these events is in the activity centers and the Hospital Happenings newsletter. Ambassador Assistance—Call 28 For questions or assistance with any nonmedical issues, you can reach a hospital Ambassador by dialing ext. 28 from any hospital phone. Ambassador service is available: Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. If no one is available to take your call, please leave a message with your room number and a time to call back. If you have an urgent need outside these times, please speak with your nurse. Ambassadors help: – Answer questions about the hospital and surrounding areas. – Assist with malfunctioning nonmedical equipment (e.g., TV, VCR, bed, lights, restrooms). – Find a staff person to help clean your room or bathroom outside regularly scheduled times. – Find people, places and things in the hospital. – Take care of any other nonmedical needs. Please note: Ambassador assistance is not for medical advice or quality-of-care issues. For these questions, please speak with your nurse or physician. ATM A Wachovia ATM is on the first floor of the hospital. It takes major bank and credit cards. Bathrooms and Showers Each patient room (except the Cardiac and Neonatal Intensive Care Units [CICU and NICU]) has its own bathroom, which parents may use. Parents of children in the CICU and NICU may use bathrooms and showers on the second floor in the Parent Lounge. 2 Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Chapel The chapel is on the first floor. Services are Sunday at 11 a.m., Wednesday at noon and 7 p.m., and on special occasions as well. See the Hospital Happenings newsletter for service dates, times and locations. To reach a chaplain, dial 0 on any hospital phone and ask the operator to page the chaplain on duty. Computers/Internet Access About Personal Laptop Computers The hospital is a wireless hotspot, so wireless devices can connect to the Internet. – Laptops must have a wireless card to connect to the Internet. – An access code is needed to connect to the Internet while in the hospital—the access code is choawireless (see below for instructions). – Please call the Children’s Solution Center at ext. 56767 or visit the Family Library on the fourth floor if you need further assistance. – For your convenience, there are computers with Internet access in the Parent Business Center. Setup for Wireless Network If there are any third-party utilities managing the wireless network adapter on your PC (Intel, Linksys, Netgear, etc.), you may have to consult their documentation. These instructions apply to wireless laptops, tablets, etc. running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or later: – Click on Start>Settings>Network Connections. – Right click on Wireless Network Connections and select Properties. – Select the Wireless Networks tab.* – Select the Association tab. To configure: – Enter network name (SSID): choawireless – Choose network authentication: Open – Choose data encryption: Disabled – Click OK to close all windows to get back to Windows Network Connection Properties on the Wireless Networks tab. – Make sure choawireless is at the top of the list of Preferred Networks. – Click OK to save changes. The wireless adapter will automatically connect to choawireless (you may need to reboot your PC if you were already connected to the wireless network). If you need further assistance, call the Children’s Solution Center at ext. 56767, or visit the Family Library on the fourth floor. *There may not be a Wireless Networks tab if you have any third-party utilities managing the wireless network adapter on your PC. If there is no Wireless Networks tab, select Add in the Preferred Networks section to get to the Wireless Network Properties. Borrowing a Laptop Computer From the Family Library Laptop computers are available for check-out after a seven-day hospital stay. For more information, visit the Family Library on the fourth floor. 3 Create a Personalized Web Page With CarePagessm Patients and families can create a free, personalized Web page with CarePagesSM: – Stay in touch with family and friends before, during and after a hospital stay. – Share progress updates and news. – Get messages of support. Making a page takes about 10 minutes: – Visit www.choa.org to get started. – Click on the Patient Resources box. – Click on Patient Web Pages. – Click on the CarePagesSM logo. – Register, and follow a few simple steps to complete the page. – Invite friends and family to visit the site for news and updates. For help setting up a page, contact CarePagesSM customer service at [email protected] or call 888-852-5521, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. You may also visit the Family Library on the fourth floor, or call ext. 51611. Family Library Patients and families may use the free services and materials at the Family Library (ext. 51611), which is located on the fourth floor. There are items available in English and Spanish, including health, educational and reference materials, children’s books, videos, and DVDs. There are also computers with Internet access and librarians can assist you with creating CarePagesSM. The Family Library has a copier and fax machine, notary and printing services, and a digital camera for check-out. Upon request, the family librarian will conduct medical information searches about your child’s condition. Hours Monday and Friday Tuesday to Thursday Saturday Sunday Story Time 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Noon to 4 p.m. Every Tuesday at 2 p.m. Garden The Garden is on the first floor. It is a great place for patients and families looking for peace, quiet and a breath of fresh air. Before taking a patient outside, please check with the doctor or a nurse to make sure it is OK. There is a walking path. When the weather is sunny, there are often special activities for patients. Check the Hospital Happenings newsletter for a list of activities. 4 Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Gift Shop The Gift Shop is on the first floor. The shop is staffed by volunteers and has toys, balloons, snacks, books, magazines, stamps and personal care products. The Gift Shop does not sell cigarettes or tobacco products. For more information, call ext. 56178. Hours Monday to Friday Saturday Sunday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lactation Rooms The Lactation Rooms provide a place for lactation/breast-feeding. These rooms are located: – Across from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the 2 – In the Cardiac Step-down Unit on the 2 – Near the Children’s Michael P. Fisher Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) on the 2 – In the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) on the 4 Breast pumps are available for inpatient and outpatient families. There is a lactation consultant onsite Monday to Friday. For more information, please ask your nurse. Laundry The Laundry room is on the 2 and 4 , near the family waiting rooms. Families can use the washers and dryers for free. Detergent can be purchased in the Gift Shop. Washing can be done from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Legal Aid From Health Law Partnership (HeLP) HeLP provides free, direct legal services to low-income children and their families (at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level). HeLP is a community collaboration of: – Georgia State University College of Law – The Atlanta Legal Aid Society – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta HeLP believes that by combining the healthcare expertise of hospital professionals with the legal expertise of attorneys, we can provide a service to address the legal, policy and ethical issues that affect children’s health. HeLP can assist with legal issues – Public benefits – Employment involving: – Family law – Consumer issues – Housing – Education – Permanency planning and consent for care An onsite legal clinic is located on the fifth floor, across from the Butterfly elevators. For more information, ask a social worker at Children’s or call 404-785-2005. 5 Mail/Stamps Ambassadors and volunteers bring any mail or packages to patient rooms on a daily basis. Stamps can be purchased in the Gift Shop. Mail received after a patient has been discharged from the hospital will be forwarded to the patient’s home address. Mail can be sent from: – The hospital mailroom box at the information desk (picked up Monday to Friday by 10:30 a.m.) – The mailbox on Uppergate Road The mailing address for Children’s at Egleston is: 1405 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30322-1062 Newspapers Newspapers can be purchased on the first floor. Parent Business Center The Parent Business Center is located on the 4 anyone age 18 or older. . It has computers with Internet access. It is open to Protecting Valuables There is a safe in each patient room. The safe should be open when you arrive in the room. There are instructions on the safe to set a new code, lock and open the safe. If the safe is not open, if you forget the code or if the safe’s screen is not lighting up, please call Security at ext. 56142 for help. Room/Food Services Special Diets If the doctor orders a special diet (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium) for your child, you will receive a dietspecific menu. The order will be approved by a nutritionist before delivery. Cafeteria Hours (dining area open 24 hours a day) Breakfast 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Lunch 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cafeteria Menu Hotline Dial ext. 50500 to hear the daily cafeteria menu. Cafeteria Discount A 25 percent cafeteria discount is available to all parents of patients who are admitted to Children’s. A parent/guardian ID badge is needed to receive the discount. 6 Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Room Service Room Service is available after the doctor has given an order to the Diet office. Dial ext. 56262. – Meals can be ordered from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. – Orders are delivered within 45 minutes. Hours Daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Options for tray removal: – The nurse will remove your tray from the room. – Someone from Room Service will come by to pick up the tray. – Call Room Service at ext. 56262 and ask to have the tray picked up. – Place the tray on the blue, covered cart in the hall. Guest Trays Guest trays are available from Room Service. Guest trays are delivered with the patient’s tray, unless a different time is requested or the patient is not receiving meals. For pricing and any other questions, please call Room Service at ext. 56262. Breast-feeding Mothers Mothers who are breast-feeding as the only means of patient nutrition may receive free meal trays for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Room Service, or they may receive a discount in the cafeteria. A nurse will alert Room Service and contact the mother with instructions. Coffee Shop The Coffee Shop is on the first floor. It serves an assortment of breakfast, lunch and dinner items and has a full menu of coffee and specialty beverages. Hours Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. School Program for Patients The schoolroom is located on the ground . Patients are encouraged to attend school in the hospital as soon as they are medically able. Teachers may visit patient rooms if a child is unable to leave his room. For more information, call ext. 51230. Hours Monday to Thursday Grades kindergarten to fifth 10 a.m. to noon Grades sixth to 12th 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday Grades kindergarten to 12th 9:30 a.m. to noon Classrooms have computers and textbooks. Parents should bring their child’s assignments and books to the hospital if possible. The child’s school will receive an attendance note for the days the patient participated in the hospital school program. 7 Security The Security office can be reached at ext. 56142. Officers patrol the hospital and the hospital grounds. Security also offers: – Escorts to cars – Motorist aid, including help with flat tires – Lost and found help Smoking Children’s is Tobacco-Free Inside and Out To support a healing environment, smoking and the use of all tobacco products is not permitted at Children’s. This pertains to all indoor and outdoor areas of our campuses.
