Sacrament of Baptism:
Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation
program for parents who desire to share their faith with
their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to
the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled
two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for
classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing
Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter
of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active
parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date.
Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making
other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to
attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage
preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or
Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of
Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the
Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy
Communion regularly, have their children attending a
Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married,
the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of
the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is in the Infant Home
Chapel on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are
confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at
7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family
member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home.
Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First
Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the
Eucharist.

contact Denise Wood, Program Director/Tour information
at (716) 828-7517 or by e-mail at [email protected].
It is hard to believe that the first month of the new year is
almost over. One of the things that we celebrate at the end of
January each year is Catholic Schools Week. This Sunday, at
the 10:00 a.m. Mass, we will begin a week-long period of
activities which will highlight the Catholic elementary school
experience. Our parish has a long history of sponsoring a
Catholic elementary school. In 1896, our school began as St.
Patrick’s School (the name of the parish before and during the
early part of Father Baker’s time here). It was renamed Our
Lady of Victory school in 1906. So, next year, will be the 120th
anniversary of Catholic elementary school education here at
OLV!
To celebrate this year, there will be an Open House today,
January 25, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Even if you have no one in
our elementary school, please feel free to visit it during our
Open House – to see what is taking place in Catholic Education
these days – or just to take a walk down “memory lane” if you
were a student here some time ago. We’d love to have you visit.
Throughout Catholic Schools Week, pray for the administration,
faculty, students, and school families who make up OLV
Elementary School.
Looking ahead in our parish calendar, the weekend of February
7 and 8 will be dedicated to the “Catholics Come Home”
program. On that weekend, at the end of each Mass, Chris Swan
and Father John will speak about reaching out to encourage
people to come back to church or to join the church for the first
time, building on the “Catholics Come Home” commercials
which have played on television and social media outlets since
mid-December. Chris Swan is a members of our Parish Council
and he is the chair of our “Catholics Come Home” committee.
After each of the Masses that weekend, there will be a coffee
and donuts reception in the Music Room for those who want to
know more about the church or “Catholics Come Home.”
You may remember that, last fall, we commissioned one of our
parishioners as she was about to leave for a half year of
missionary work in Ghana, West Africa. Mary Clare O’Brien
has been sending emails to her family on a regular basis, and I
have been privileged to receive them through her parents. She,
and her companion, Sarah Noonan, who is my cousin, Jean
Burkard Noonan’s daughter, have experienced so many things
in their work in the Nazareth Home for God’s Children in
Ghana. Check today’s bulletin for a short “Update on Mary
Clare’s Mission to Ghana” provided by her mom.
Many thanks to Betty Pukalo and all who worked with her for
the beautiful reception after Bishop Malone’s Pro Life Mass
here last Saturday. We all enjoyed it.
May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Pray for the canonization of our founder,
Venerable Nelson Baker
Father Paul

Summary of the Readings
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s first reading, Jonah, sent by God to warn the people,
storms through Nineveh, frightening the citizens out of their
wits. It works! They repent before Jonah makes his way
through a third of the city, and God sees “by their actions” how
they have turned from evil.

Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that “the world in its
present form is passing away.” He calls for a change of heart.
He stops short of telling them to set aside their everyday lives,
but still he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live as though
they aren’t doing the things they’re doing.
Sunday, January 25—Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of
God is at hand!” The apostles-to-be abandon their nets and
follow him. Thus in all the readings we hear an invitation to a
radical and immediate change in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Update on Mary Clare’s Mission to Ghana
It has been ten weeks since Mary Clare left for the Nazareth
Home for God’s Children in Ghana, Africa. Her objective of
educating the children has taken a back seat to their medical
needs. About half of the 42 children in the orphanage have
serious special needs. MC has become not only a teacher, and a
“mama,” but a nurse too. Her days are spent attending to health
issues, trying to teach and helping to run and organize the
orphanage. There have been 8 new children brought to them
since November. MC loves every child in a special way, and
although she has been sick a lot, she is overjoyed to experience
each day with her beautiful little friends. She is asking for
prayers from her parish family for the Order (MASEL) to have
many new vocations so that the children can know the love of
God and experience some stability. For more information:
www.sisterstanschildren.org. MC’s family brings a photo
album to church if you would like to see the orphans.
