Welcome
On behalf of the 2015 Planning Committee, I would like to welcome you to the Saint
Paul District’s 61st Midwinter Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Anderson
Student Center on the University of St. Thomas campus. We are pleased to continue
our relationship with their friendly and energetic staff. There are changes to the
layout compared to last year, which are based on the feedback from the attendees.
We expect the changes will be beneficial for all. The committee has assembled an
array of speakers that we anticipate will be of interest to the entire dental team. The
meeting will be an opportunity to meet with friends, network, enjoy good food and
listen to informative speakers.
As part of the change in the layout, the exhibitors will be located in one area making
it easier for you to converse with them regarding their products and services. The
exhibitors are a key part of the success to the Midwinter meeting so please take time to visit with them
throughout the day as you may find a new product or service that can help enhance your practice.
Feedback is encouraged and is valuable to the planning committee. Your comments help ensure
successful future meetings. Throughout the day you will have ample opportunity to fill out evaluation
forms or speak with any of the committee members. You can also email any comments or suggestions to
[email protected].
Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at the 2015 Midwinter Meeting.

Recognition for the 2014 Monson Grant Recipients
Our Society enjoys a prominent reputation for leadership, innovation and fellowship.
We continue to help lead our profession into the next century with clear vision. Part
of that vision includes securing resources to support the education of current and
future dentists.
The Saint Paul District Dental Society has had the privilege of distributing funds from
the George S. Monson Foundation for over twenty years. Dr. Monson was a Saint
Paul dentist and a SPDDS member until 1933. In 1981, his daughter, Ruth Monson, left
nearly $170,000 to create the George S. Monson Foundation for the purpose of
supporting education in the field of dentistry. Proceeds of the Monson Fund are
given as scholarships to junior and senior dental students and are also used to offset
the costs of Children’s Dental Health Day and SPDDS Midwinter meeting.
Recipients of this year’s Monson Grant will be recognized at our Midwinter luncheon
and program.

Outstanding Service Award 2015
Dr. Daniel C. Shannon was born in LaCrosse, WI and grew up in La
Crescent MN. He is the third of five children; older brother Michael retired economist,
sister Maureen retired college professor, and younger twin brothers Robert, a
physician and Richard a dentist.
Dan’s father died when he was 10 years old and he began working early picking
berries, delivering newspapers, lawn care, janitorial work and farming. Later jobs
included working in restaurants, a brewery, and a youth home for delinquent boys.
He credits his Mom, a long time elementary school teacher, for keeping him on the
straight and narrow.
After he graduated from high school in LaCrosse, he attended St. John’s University and graduated in 1968
from Marquette University School of Dentistry. He served in the US Army Dental Corps taking care of
soldiers coming home from Vietnam.
After living in Minneapolis and working with Dr. Vernon Steffens for one year he bought a practice from
Dr. Lynn Odne in North St. Paul and then partnered with Dr. Steven Ager for 15 years. Dan established his
solo practice in 1972 and retired in 2011.
Dr. Shannon served as President of the SPDDS in 2000 and over the years has served as a Delegate to the
MDA House of Delegates as well as many committees both at the state and district level. He has been a
tireless volunteer at the Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic for over twenty years and was instrumental in
the clinic’s renovation project. He is someone who can be counted on to roll up his sleeves and pitch in
whenever he is asked to do so and especially when another dentist is in need of assistance. People who
are pleased to be Dan’s friend span many decades. Due to his heart for serving, his friendships are deep,
strong and long lasting. Dr. Shannon is a great listener with a positive attitude and as a practicing dentist
his trademarks were – patient comfort, open communication, personal relationships and comprehensive oral
health for each patient.
Dan and Mary Beth have been married for 48 years, have two sons Patrick and David and three
grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kevin and Oona.
SPDDS is always striving….
To explore new ideas
To provide affordable education for our members and the dental team
To try new techniques
To create opportunities for you to connect with colleagues

Presented by: Jeffrey W. Horowitz, DMD, FAGD
Dr. Jeff Horowitz completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh
and earned his DMD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He founded
the Carolina Center for Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry, a multi-disciplinary group
practice in the Conway/Myrtle Beach, SC area. His main interests include cosmetic
smile rehabilitation, complex restorative cases, treatment of sleep disordered breathing,
orthodontics and TMJ disorders. Dr. Horowitz has been featured in regional print and
television news media and lectures throughout the U.S. on sleep and multi-disciplinary
dentistry, engaging audiences in a personalized style.
Seminar Description
You have the knowledge and skills to begin treating patients with O.S.A., but how do you find the patients
to treat? What materials are needed? This course is designed to help you identify the large population of
patients within your own practice that are practically begging for your help. How and when to bring up
the conversation is the critical factor in getting your patients on-board and committed to treatment.
Learning Objectives:
•How to identify patients within your practice that may benefit from evaluation and/or treatment.
•When and how to bring up the topic of Sleep Disordered Breathing with your patients.
•What materials are needed to begin discussing Sleep Disordered Breathing with your patients?
•Developing relationships with primary care physicians, specialists, sleep labs to enhance your reputation.
•Bringing a patient through treatment from the initial conversation.
•Billing and insurance concerns.
•Outside marketing opportunities.

Professional and Psychological Stresses Unique to Dentistry and Understanding
the Patient’s Role in Generating These Stresses
3 Fundamental CE Credits (CORE Subject Area: Patient Communication)
Presented by: Leesa Morrow, Ph.D, JD, LP
Dr. Leesa Morrow is a licensed clinical health psychologist and assistant clinical professor
in the TMD and Orofacial Pain Clinic at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Dr. Morrow completed her degree in law in 2002. She uses her law degree to teach ethics
and malpractice risk containment. Dr. Morrow has devoted her career to a blend
of clinical practice and teaching with expertise in chronic pain and stress-exacerbated
illness.
Seminar Description
This seminar will introduce the participant to diagnostic criteria for the most common psychopathologies.
Ways to identify these patients and manage them without incurring dysfunctional office dynamics will be a
point of focus. Stresses unique to dentistry will be discussed. Specific attention will be paid to the stresses
associated with a close working treatment team, working in persistent close proximity to the patient, and
managing the regressive aspects of our patients’ common fear of dental intervention.
Let’s Talk About OSHA and Infection Control
3 Fundamental CE Credits (CORE Subject Area: Infection Control)
Presented by: John A. Molinari, Ph.D.
Dr. Molinari is currently Director of Infection Control for THE DENTAL ADVISOR in Ann
Arbor, Michigan. Previously, he served for 32 years at the University of Detroit Mercy
School of Dentistry as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences
and Director of Infection Control.
Dr. Molinari has published over 450 scientific articles, text chapters, and abstracts in the
areas of microbiology and immunology, and lectures nationally and internationally on
topics dealing with infectious diseases and infection control.
Seminar Description
Reported infection control breaches have placed many medical and dental patients at risk of infection,
created media hype, and also increased state and national health agency awareness. Even though crossinfection is uncommon in dental settings, consequences may be severe and can become highly publicized.
This seminar will discuss current OSHA and infection control regulations and recommendations for dentistry
based on clinical and scientific evidence. Recent updates and accumulated data regarding health care
risks, vaccinations, and preventive measures will serve as frameworks for this presentation, and will address
certain issues where perceptions and misuse of infection control procedures and products are in conflict
with recommendations. A major goal of this presentation is to help dental professionals increase their
understanding of the “why” as well as the “what” of infection control practices.
A special thank you to the sponsors of Dr. Molinari’s seminar:
