a non-profit organization, provides invaluable support and assistance not only to children and families struggling

Diabetes Awareness
November 14th 2010 as World Diabetes Day, and encourages all
Philadelphians to participate in the Believe in Blue Campaign.
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine started
Philadelphia’s World Diabetes Day and the Believe in Blue Campaign in
2008 in collaboration with many of Philadelphia’s iconic landmarks that
use blue lighting to raise awareness of the need for urgency in the
Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller introduced a resolution on behalf diagnosis, treatment, education and prevention of diabetes.
The globally recognized logo for World Diabetes is a blue circle. The
Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine; recognizing
color blue symbolizes the sky that unites all nations and signifies the unity
of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic;
and the circle symbolizes life and health.
The International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization,
along with the United Nations, recognize diabetes as a non-communicable
pandemic disease that threatens to overwhelm healthcare systems, and
emerge as a serious barrier to economic development.
Diabetes is a chronic, progressive condition that affects approximately
285 million people worldwide. It is the 4th leading cause of global death
by disease with 2 people developing diabetes every 10 seconds; and in
Philadelphia the diagnosis of diabetes is 5 % above the national average.
According to the American Diabetes Association, 25 percent of
African Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 are diagnosed with
diabetes; with one in four African American women over 55 years of age
diagnosed with the disease. If left uncontrolled, it can lead to a number
of serious and sometimes life-threatening complications, including
blindness, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, and loss of
limb and death. www.diabetes.org
A Call to Action in the Fight Against AIDS
Philadelphia has the 6th largest HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country. The
city's HIV infection rates are five times the national average, and higher
than New York City's. Seventy percent of new infections are among
African Americans.
To respond to Philadelphia's alarming HIV/AIDS infection rates, Mayor
Nutter's Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and Brown University Medical School
have convened the Interfaith Health Action Alliance of Philadelphia. IHAAP
is a coalition of local faith-based organizations that seek to reduce health
disparities in Philadelphia, particularly HIV/AIDS disparities.
IHAAP's interdisciplinary leadership team includes Reverend Dr. Alyn E.
Waller of Enon Tabernacle, Reverend Dr. Marguerite Handy from the Mayor's
Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, Dr. Amy Nunn of Brown University Medical
School, State Senator Vincent Hughes, Bishop Richard F. Norris of the African
Methodist Episcopal Church, and Imam Abdul-Malik Ali of Masjidut-Taqwa.
From November 8-14, 2010, IHAAPs' pastors and imams will launch a citywide
week of activities related to HIV/AIDS, including preaching, prayer, education,
and HIV testing.

PHILLY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP SYNERGY TO HOST
FUNDRAISER FOR PHILABUNDANCE & STOP HUNGER
On Friday, November 12, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., SYNERGY, a
charitable networking initiative, will tackle hunger with a benefit for
Philabundance & Stop Hunger NOW at The Comcast Center, 1701
John F. Kennedy Blvd. The goal is to heighten awareness to the growing
epidemic of hunger which affects “900,000 low-income residents of the
Delaware Valley” according to Philabundance’s website. This premier networking
fundraiser will also collaborate with WhyPR as they host their sixth annual "I’m
Still Here Networking Mixer and Holiday Shopping Night" to bring
together young professionals, political activists, and community leaders to spend
an evening to Stamp Out Hunger. The event will commence with
opening remarks by the co-founders of Synergy, Baba Taiye Renfrow, Randy
Robinson, and Dr. Chuck Williams and executive representatives for
Philabundance & Stop Hunger NOW.
Synergy’s purpose is to help youth in serious need of support and services,
and they believe that this can be accomplished by raising awareness and funds
for non-profit organizations which provide such support and services. Each
month a different cause benefiting youth is featured. After expenses are paid,
80% of the proceeds go directly to the featured charities and causes. The group
was founded by Baba Taiye Renfrow, Randy Robinson and Dr. Chuck Williams
nearly eight months ago. Past events have received media coverage and have
been highly successful and raised thousands of dollars for various organizations.
Most recently, the group was highlighted by Daily News, Tribune, 6ABC, and
Fox 29 for their support of The Sunshine Foundation, which allowed a young
girl to live her dream of going to Disney World.

Holds Energy
Assistance Summit
Atlantic City Electric recently hosted more than
100 social service agency representatives from
southern New Jersey, at a daylong, interactive
Energy Assistance Summit at the Atlantic City
Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The summit gave service providers valuable
information to better assist low-income utility
customers, many of whom have difficulty paying
their energy bills.
“The summit provided an avenue through which
Atlantic City Electric will continue to strengthen its
partnerships with the social service agencies that
help our customers on a regular basis,” said Charlie
Wimberg, Atlantic City Electric Vice President.

Health Partners to Host Crazy
Praise Dance Showcase
Local Health Plan Celebrates 25 Years of Building Healthier Communities
Health Partners will host the 2nd annual Crazy Praise Dance Showcase and
Health Fair, encouraging families to make dance and fitness part of healthy
living. Crazy Praise will feature some of Philadelphia’s most talented praise
dance groups from five local churches, guest emcee Lonnie Hunter of Praise
103.9 FM, and a special performance by Grammy Award-Winning Artist Israel
Houghton & New Breed. The health fair is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by
the dance showcase at 6 p.m. (Doors open for the showcase at 5:15 p.m.) It all
takes place at The Baptist Worship Center at 4790 James Street in Philadelphia.
"We are very excited to host the second annual Crazy Praise Dance
Showcase and Health Fair as part of our 25th anniversary celebration. We chose
praise dance because it takes a holistic approach to maintaining good physical
health, combining elements of community, spiritual wellbeing and the benefits
of being physically active," says William S. George, president and CEO, Health
Partners. "The Crazy Praise Dance Showcase is our way of celebrating 25 years
of doing what we do best, building healthier communities in the Greater
Philadelphia region."
Health Partners’ BMI-Mobile will be onsite at the Crazy Praise health fair as
part of a campaign to provide 2,500 Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings to the
community. Attendees who participate in the BMI screenings will receive Health
Partners’ 25th anniversary I KNOW (my BMI) t-shirt, while supplies last. The
health fair will also include health information, giveaways and a Kids Zone with
a face painter and Health Partners’ kangaroo mascot, Ms. Roo.
