HEN Kate Beckinsale
decided to accept the
role of Selene, a fierce,
sexy, leather-clad,
blue-eyed vampire
warrior, in Underworld (2003), she saw
it as an experiment, a chance to do something different. Waifish and cerebral in
style, she’d never been cast as an action
hero, and for a British actress accustomed
to playing restrained, cultivated
Englishwomen, Selene’s anger and passion were an appealing novelty.
Why not give it a try, simply as a one-off
experiment?
Things don’t always go the way you figure. Flash forward to 2012, and the 38year-old Beckinsale is back as Selene in
Underworld: Awakening, the fourth
installment in the lucrative Underworld
series – though she provided only a
voiceover monologue for Underworld:
Rise of the Lycans (2009), a prequel to
the original film.
“It’s been really wild, this whole thing,’’
Beckinsale says, speaking telephonically
from her Los Angeles home. “It’s true that
I originally did the first Underworld as an
experiment, for myself, to see if I could
pull it off. I wasn’t sure I could. It really
wasn’t my thing, it wasn’t in my background or anything I felt confident in.
Action wasn’t anything I thought I could
become good at. Then it just kind of spiraled. I never thought they’d be on a
fourth one, my third one, or that I’d have
gotten away with it.
“I think it’s a real privilege to be one of
the few actresses who actually have an
opportunity to do these kind of movies
that people respond to,’’ she continues.
“There are not very many girls who can
have their own action franchise, and I feel
extremely lucky that I’ve got one of those
and that I can play a very empowered
female character that people enjoy.’’ Set
for release on January 20, Awakening
jumps forward more than a decade from
the events of Underworld: Evolution
(2006). Humans are now the dominant
species, having all but eradicated both
lycans (werewolves) and vampires. Selene
has been kept in a cryogenic sleep, but
she’s awake now, angry as hell and determined to take down Antigen, the biotech
company behind her kind’s near demise.
The big revelation for Selene, and the
audience, is that she is a mother. As it
turns out, that child is a teenager named
Eve (India Eisley), and she may be the
key to securing a future for the vampires.“The notoriously difficult thing
about these females in action movies is
that you can’t just transpose what a
man’s experience would be and put a
woman in there,’’ Beckinsale says. “You
really do have to take on the fact that
she’s female and, with Selene, the fact
that she’s never necessarily appeared to
be the maternal type. She’s very hardedged and all that. The fact that she does
end up having to come to terms with having a daughter she wasn’t really expecting
was, I thought, really interesting.
“That was really the part of this story
that I found most fascinating.’’
The Underworld films have been
something of a family business for Lily
Mo, who played the young Selene in
Underworld: Evolution her father
starred in the first three Underworld
adventures the first two of which starred
her mother and were directed by her stepfather, Beckinsale’s husband, Len
Wiseman. This time out, Wiseman wrote
and produced the film, but handed over
the directorial reins to the Swedish tandem of Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein.
Beckinsale says. “We had two directors
instead of one. We had Swedish directors

instead of an American director. It was so
vastly different that I sat there going,
‘Ooo, this feels a little bit unfamiliar and is
completely something else’ – which was
good, I think.
Wiseman was not on the Awakening
set as he was off directing Total Recall, a
big-budget sci-fi film – based on the
Philip K. Dick story and the 1990 Arnold
Schwarzenegger movie.“This version of
Total Recall uses the short story and the
movie as a jumping-off point,’’ “The central question of the movie is the same,’’
she continues, “and it’s fascinating. It’s
‘What is real and who am I ?’ So that question is very much the same, but our film is

Lifeline
probably a different tone and a little bit
more contemporary.’’
The actress can’t predict what her
future will hold, but she knows better
than to promise that it won’t include
another Underworld film. “I’m obviously
not to be trusted anymore on the question
of will there be more Underworld
movies,’’ Beckinsale says, laughing. ‘’I’m
very gullible. The first three movies were
conceived as a trilogy, and that was the
end of it. Whenever I’d been asked if
there’d be another one, I constantly said
no, and I didn’t think there would be.
Then the third movie was a prequel and I
wasn’t in it, so ... I have no idea.
Taylor Swift to perform at Grammy awards
Smith to host Kids’ Choice Awards
SINGER Taylor Swift is one of the celebrities who will perform at
Grammy awards. The prestigious award function will be held on
February 12 at the Staples Center. The 22-year-old, who was named
favourite country singer at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday,
has also been nominated for Grammy in three categories. Other
artists who are set to perform include singers Bruno Mars, Foo
Fighters, Nicki Minaj, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson.
ACTOR Will Smith has signed up to host Nickelodeon’s 25th annual Kids’
Choice Awards. The network announced that the 43-year-old will emcee the
event, which is scheduled for March 31. “The Kids’ Choice Awards are always
the year’s liveliest, slimiest and most outrageous party for kids and teens. I’m
honoured they wanted me to host this year so I can have a front row seat to
take part in the fun,” showbizspy.com quoted Smith as saying. The Kids’ Choice
Awards honours the year’s biggest movie, television and music acts.

Google to launch Maps-based game for Google+
Tech
guide
GOOGLE’S “your world” theme is carried into the gaming realm with the announcement of an original title powered by WebGL. The title
will be coming to Google+ Games exclusively in February 2012. The game was announced quietly in a demo video yesterday. It is Google
Maps-based and was developed by the Maps team for Google’s gaming platform. The demo video features a cube with a map overlay.
Players will have to navigate a blue ball through the location, similar to marble tilt games like Marble Madness or the Wii’s Marble Mania.
It seems like the player’s marble will need to touch the marked locations on the cube map in order to accumulate points and advance to
the next area. Once the marble rolls over the markers, users get a small piece of information about the location. It’s a simple offering with a
catchy tune, and it seems like a good start to original content. The WebGL technology which powers the game allows for 3D graphics without any need for installing additional software. The YouTube video links to an interactive Google Maps primer. Mashable points out the
Zagat blip in the game demo and says that the new game could be a way to “push the popular Zagat Ratings further into the spotlight
using gamification.” Players could possibly earn points for Zagat-attached venues. The Google+ Games platform arrived in August and features many of the games people were used to from Facebook, such as Zynga’s Farmville as well as the popular Angry Birds title.

TV and the internet get married
Television and the Internet are made for each other; the most popular
entertainment medium and the best way of distributing content around
the globe should make for a perfect partnership. At least, that’s what
we’ve been told for something like the last 15 years, but many of the
attempts to hook TV up to the Internet and make beautiful music have
failed to impress a mass audience.
But this is the year that both the hardware and software giants think it
will all happen.
In Las Vegas, the likes of Sony and Samsung will be keen to show that
it is they, not the software giants, who will determine the way we consume television over the next decade. It looks as though just about every
television that goes on sale from now on will have some means of connecting to the Internet.
And then there’s Apple, rumoured to be planning to launch its own televisions this year. Somehow, though, it doesn’t look likely that we will
be invited down to Cupertino for a sneak preview of the iTV.
New user interfaces
Suddenly, there is a revolution in our relationship with gadgets and
computers.
The old computing model of keyboard, mouse and screen has already
seen some serious challenges in the last couple of years, as smartphones
and tablets have quickly established that touch is the new way to interact with devices.
Then there is Microsoft’s Kinect, using gestures and sound to control
a game console and now video services. And Apple’s Siri voice assistant
heralds a wave of innovation from the voice-recognition industry, promising to move to the mass market this year.
What will be the important
consumer technology trends
of this year? We bring you three
of the trends to pursue
A 3-D printer
3-d Printing
It’s difficult to exaggerate the excitement in geeky circles about 3-D
printers, simple machines that allow anyone to take a digital design and
manufacture all manner of
objects from their kitchen
table. There is heady talk of a
new industrial revolution
and the total personalisation
of consumer goods, as 3-D
printing becomes ever more
affordable.
We hoping that the Consumer Electronics
Show will give us some evidence of whether this is a phenomenon with as much potential as its backers claim. If it is,
there should soon be 3-D printers from major manufacturers
at your local electronics store. And, as they can reproduce
themselves, we could be knee-deep in them by 2013.

Phones that let you feel the world
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
S
URE, today’s phones can
deliver the sound of a heartbeat. But how would you like
to actually feel the throbbing? A
few companies want to replace the
crude vibration motors in today’s
phones and tablets with something that provides a much wider
range of sensations, allowing you
to feel the rumble of a Harley or
the reverberation of a shotgun
blast. The new technology can
even let you feel the outlines of a
button on the screen.
At the International Consumer
Electronics Show, the gigantic
gadget conclave in Las Vegas this
week, a company called Artificial
Muscle Inc demonstrated how it
can make mobile devices shake
and rattle with great realism,
employing a technology that uses
plastics that function like muscles.
The company showed off an
iPhone it had modified by placing
one of its Vivitouch “motors”
inside. The phone shook as it ran a
simple ball-rolling game. The plastic muscle provided the feeling not
just of the ball hitting the walls of a
maze, but of the slight vibration it
made while rolling freely across
the floor. When it was used for typing, the phone gave a buzzing sensation that confirmed each press of
the virtual keys.
In another demonstration, a
Vivitouch motor shook a modified
Xbox controller to allow the user
to feel what it’s like to hold a beating heart. In another instance, it
let the user experience the signature rumble of a Harley-Davidson
motorcycle starting up.
The vibration engines that go
into today’s phones and game controllers consist of an electric motor
that spins a metal weight. They
take time to start up and are effective at only one frequency. That
means they are unable to provide
varying sensations. It’s pretty
much the same rumble or buzz
every time.
With Vivitouch motors, users
will have “high-definition feel,”
says Dirk Schapeter, CEO of
Artificial Muscle.
The company is owned by
German chemical giant Bayer AG
and is a spinoff from SRI
International. (Another technology from this California-based
research institute was integrated
into the iPhone last year: Siri, the
virtual personal assistant that talks
to you.)Artificial Muscle’s motors
contain strips of “muscle.” When
an electric charge is applied over
the strips, they expand and contract at a frequency that can be
precisely controlled.
The first product to use
Vivitouch came out in September.
It’s the Mophie Pulse, a sleeve for
the iPod Touch that’s intended to
make games more lifelike.
The next step for the company is
to get the motor built into phones.
Schapeter says there will be a couple of those on the market this
year, from companies he wouldn’t
identify. He did not say how much
the Vivitouch would cost.
Artificial Muscle isn’t the only
company trying to cause a sensation. Senseg OY of Finland has an
exotic way of turning electricity
into feeling. By applying a (nonshocking) electric field through the
screen of a tablet, it can provide
resistance to the movement of the
user’s finger. So a glossy, smooth
screen can suddenly feel rough.
“The palette of effects that’s
available is enormous,” says David
Rice, vice president of marketing
at Senseg.
The feature should be easy to
add to tablets, since it consists
solely of a chip and an additional
coating on the screen, Rice says.
The company is in talks with
tablet makers. It might be included in products due late this year.
He would not say how much it
would add to the price. The technology could help users “feel” a
scroll bar, for instance, or the
boundaries of an image. Each letter in a text message could register as a little “bump,” making it
easier to select parts of the text.
Or the slingshot you pull back to
fire an angry bird could register
more and more resistance the farther you pull it back, Rice suggests. “It’s little things. It’s not
something that’s going to immediately blow you away,” Rice says.
But if it becomes pervasive, it’ll be
something “you’ll recognise when
it’s gone.”

Get rid of the junk for a happy home
Lifestyle
guide
1. BE ruthless when deciding what to keep and what to let go of. It’s the only way to succeed at de-cluttering. Throw out the old
stuff. Do not just take everything out and rearrange. That is a temporary solution and is not sufficient.
2. Look at everything carefully. What made sense to hold onto five or ten years ago may not fit in with your lifestyle today. Tastes and
fashions change. Technology changes. kids grow up.
3. Pick one souvenir to keep from each place you have been, if you tend to collect multiple items. Then buy fewer vacation souvenirs
on your next trip. Also make sure too many of them are not taking up space in your showcase. Store some of them away.
4. Make a designated place for everything and make sure it goes back in its place after you use it. This will help you find items when
needed and be more in control of your life.
5. Furniture should be used for its purpose. Chairs are meant for sitting and not dumping things that need to be put away. Set a system in place and you will be able to sleep better in a clean and tidy environment, feel more energised and better equipped to deal
with problems on a regular basis.
How to effectively
brighten up your room
There are two key ways
to enhance natural light
in your room. One is by
improving interior
reflectivity and the
other by reducing
obstructions from
furniture
NYT SYNDICATE
Y
OU can’t create exposures or more natural light, but you can enhance the natural light you get,” said Leonard
Steinberg, a managing director at
Prudential Douglas Elliman. The
objective, he said, is to “show how you can live in
that space comfortably, without it feeling dark.”
Fortunately, Steinberg said, “Dark spaces aren’t
dark only because they don’t get natural light.” In
fact, most of the time, he said, “It’s because they’re
painted a dark colour, or have bad lighting or
heavy curtains.” And all of those problems can be
fixed fairly easily.
Matthew Tanteri, principal of the daylighting
consulting firm Tanteri & Associates and an assistant professor of lighting design at Parsons the
New School for Design, said that there are two key
ways to enhance natural light: improving interior
reflectivity and reducing obstructions from furniture.
With reflectivity, “You want to maximise the
amount of times that daylight bounces inside the
room,” Tanteri said. To do so, he suggested using
light colours that are “close to white” on ceilings,
walls and floors, and avoiding glossy finishes.
“Glossy surfaces can actually be a detriment
because they can create glare,” he said. “The safest
finishes are matte finishes, because they reflect
light in all directions.”
Steinberg also recommends using light hues,
and offered specific paints. “Linen White by
Benjamin Moore is a very reliable, sell-yourhouse coat of paint,” he said. He suggested another Benjamin Moore colour, Decorators White, for
the ceiling and trim.
On a related note, Tanteri said: “You don’t want
to cover the wall with dark hangings. Paintings
and posters will absorb light.”
As for reducing light obstructions, “Orient objects
in the room to promote the flow of daylight,” he
said. “So, things like bookshelves and partitions
should be perpendicular to the window wall.”
Tanteri also says that light from the top of a
window will reach the farthest into the apartment,
so it is important not to block that part of the win-
dow with heavy blinds or drapery.
He favours Venetian blinds because they provide solar control and can also redirect sunlight to
the ceiling. “That’s when you get deeper daylight
penetration,” he said. Another option: shades that
travel from the bottom of the window upward,
rather than top down. “That’s something that
works for daylight as well as privacy,” he said.
And you can supplement the sunlight with
strategically placed light fixtures. “Use indirect
lighting, aimed at the ceiling,” Tanteri said. A
torchier floor lamp near the back of the room
could “take over where the daylight on the ceiling
starts to fade away.”
If some areas of the apartment still appear dark,
it may not be as big a problem as you think. “I’ve
actually had buyers specifically ask for dark areas
of an apartment, because of fine art and photography” that could fade, Steinberg said. “There’s a silver lining in every cloud.”

Lopez pays $10,000 a week to boyfriend
Paltrow feels depression was good for her
SINGER Jennifer Lopez reportedly paid $10,000 per week as
allowance to her dancer boyfriend, Casper Smart. The 42-year-old
started dating Casper, 24, just weeks after splitting with estranged
husband Marc Anthony in July last year. “She hated having to whip
out her credit card every time they go to dinner. Jen (Jennifer Lopez)
figured it’s easier to give Casper a weekly stipend, and she thought
$10K was a nice round number,” showbizspy.com quoted a source
as saying. “Jen doesn’t want to go over the top, showering Casper
with too much, but she also wants him to up his game. Jen is hoping Casper won’t think twice about buying presents for her kids or
whisking her off for a surprise weekend getaway,” the source added.
ACTRESS Gwyneth Paltrow admits that depression she went
through following the death of her father and birth of her son was
good as it helped put her life in perspective. The emotional turmoil
in the actress’ personal life left her suffering postpartum depression
after baby Moses was born in 2006. “I didn’t know really what was
wrong with me” Paltrow told Vanity Fair magazine. “It was great
because it also became so clear to me what was important to me.
At that time I just had no interest in career whatsoever. My agents
would be like, ‘This is getting weird. If you don’t (get) re-engaged
everyone’s gonna forget about you.’ I was like, ‘I don’t care. I’m not
leaving the babies’. It was so worth it,” she added.

February 26.
The Artist, the story of a famous

“I made a silent movie. I don’t

But backstage he told reporters:

JUST ONE WIN FOR HUGO
Martin Scorsese’s family film
Hugo came away with just one
award, for art direction, out of 11
nominations. But Scorsese was
presented with a special award
for the use of music in films like
The Last Waltz and Shine a Light
and was serenaded by Bob Dylan
in a rare awards show performance.
The Help took movie critics
and box-office experts by surprise last summer, despite being
based on a best-selling novel of
the same name.
Davis, who
beat the likes of Meryl Streep in
the best actress category, said she
was in “complete and utter
shock” at her win.
“I hope this encourages
Hollywood to keep making films
with a cast that looks like this, a
racially diverse cast, a female
cast, because I think that would
be the biggest statement of
progress,” Davis told reporters
backstage.
Christopher Plummer, 82, was
another popular winner for his
best supporting actor role as man
who comes out of the closet in old
age in Beginners.
“I feel terribly
young
tonight suddenly and at
my age I need all the help I can
get in that department. So thank

youth,” said Plummer, who is still
best known for playing Captain

in the 1960s.
The best foreign film award

APPER Nicki Minaj will make her debut Grammy performance next month, joining Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars
and country singer Jason Aldean on the list of artists who
will take to the stage on the recording industry’s biggest night.
Grammy organisers said on Thursday that Minaj, who has four
Grammy nominations, will perform at the February 12 awards
show, as well as country sensation Taylor Swift, and Kelly
Clarkson. But there was no official word on Thursday on whether
Britain’s Adele, whose album 21 was the biggest seller of 2011,
will be singing at the Grammys following surgery on her vocal
cords in November. Adele, who has been on doctor-ordered
vocal rest since November, was not among the first list of
Grammy performers. But the 23 year-old Someone Like You
singer was listed on Thursday as being down to sing at the BRIT
music awards ceremony in London on February 21.
Rapper Kanye West, who leads this year’s Grammys with
seven nominations, is also yet to be confirmed as a performer
at the live awards show in Los Angeles.

wants to see the parade? Actor-director Farhan Akhtar plans to
attend the ceremony in the capital. “Somedays back when I
was in Delhi, I noticed preparations for the Republic Day
parade had started. So, this time I think I would go to Delhi to
see the parade. So lets see, hopefully, I would go and see it,”
the 38-year-old filmmaker said while being presented as the
brand ambassador of electronics company Omron. Farhan is
currently working on Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag
Milkha Bhaag. His last as a director, Don 2: The King Is Back,
has done a good business at the box office.
ASIN is gearing up for a major makeover. The actress
is tired of being referred to as a behenji and wants to
start dressing sexily. Recently, she had a meeting
with a designer and discussed the possibility of
wearing skimpy clothes to various events. A source
reveals, “She has realised that her image needs to be
changed. After working in Housefull 2 with
Jacqueline Fernandez, Zarine Khan and Shazahn
Padamsee, she felt that since everyone dresses up
sexily, she should, too.” Let’s wait and see how this
one turns out!

has begun 2012
with a new fragrance.
After
opening a nightclub in
Delhi and with an impressive career graph, the
national award winning
actor has now launched
Alive and wants to gift it to
Ranbir
Kapoor
and
Deepika Padukone.
“I think I just feel certain
things are extension of
you. This is a very natural
progression of good quality which I can give to all
around the world the sense
of fragrance. And being an
actor it helps me to get that
opportunity. We worked
hard on it for two years,”

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor.
Arjun told IANS.
The
model-turnedactor-turned-producer
said he would like to gift
the perfume to two stars
so that they can smell
alike. “Among female
actresses, I would gift this
perfume to Deepika, and
among males, I might give
it to Ranbir Kapoor so that
they both smell a bit
alike,” he added.
Arjun has been an integral part in the development of his nouveau
brand from the initial
stage.
“It’s not an easy business. I am involved in only
the creative side. At the
end of the day I can make a
movie, I can make a good
dish, but people should
like it because they are the
judge. If they like it, great
and if they dislike it then I
will go back and smell
some coffee and bring
some better cologne,” said
the 39-year-old.
Arjun, a doting father,
astute businessman and
loving husband who has
been extremely busy with
his projects these days,
doesn’t
mind
hectic
lifestyle. “When you get
the opportunity, then you
must work. There were
times when I was sitting at
home with no work. You
must run against time and
manage it. Most importantly, I have to thank my
team of Alive that has
managed with no wastage
of time,” he said.

Galat
Bande, in which she was
seen as a news reporter, is
ready for her full-fledged
acting comeback with Yeh

Preeti, 31, who made her
Bollywood debut with
Mohabbatein, is looking
forward to the acting
assignment.
“Preeti is very excited
about this film, as it is an heroine-oriented movie and she
has a very interesting role in it,” said a source close to the
actress who is married to Parvin Dabas and took a break
after the birth of her son.
Half the schedule of the movie, produced under the
banner of SAM productions, is already complete, and the
rest is being shot and should be done soon.
Written and directed by Sneh Tull, the film is said to be
inspired by a real life Bollywood character. Preeti has thus
been working extra hard and rehearsing to get into the
skin of the character.
Other actors in the film include Neeraj Vora, Meghna
Patel and Bijendra Kala.
