Taymor had brought in Berger,

plays, as her writing partner in
2005 on the Spider-Man script.
The Edge said he had urged
Taymor to accept the radical overhaul. She, in turn, was pushing to
suspend performances in midwinter to make her own changes.
“When Plan X, a new, simplified
plot written largely by Berger, was
presented, she said: ‘That could
never be achieved in a three-week
period. You’d need months to do
that, and it probably won’t work,’”
the Edge recounted. “At that
moment, when that was her
response, the producers felt that
whatever Julie would do with a
hiatus was more of a polishing job
than a top-to-bottom rethink
of the show.”
Asked whether he and
Bono plotted against
Taymor, the Edge
replied: “Julie was
clearly
exhausted,
overwrought, and we all
thought that if we don’t
tread carefully, she’s going to
walk. We were tip-toeing around
her, and I think that probably
meant that people were careful in
what they said or told her. I certainly didn’t feel I could be 100
percent frank with Julie, and that
was because I felt she was carrying
so much of the weight.”
In hindsight, Bono said, starting
preview performances of SpiderMan on Broadway in November
without an out-of-town tryout was
“a terrible decision” that put enormous pressure on Taymor. But
such a test run was impossible,
Bono added, because the show’s
aerial technology and massive,
pop-up sets were built to fit its
New York home, the
Foxwoods theatre.
“Looking back,” Bono
said, “we, through inexperience, had no sense
of the implications of
that decision. The first
time anyone saw a full
run-through of the story, songs,
staging, and show that was the
first night of previews. Can you
imagine that? No one had seen the
whole thing before everyone saw
it.”
But the composers acknowledged that they were hardly in the
dark about Taymor’s vision of
Spider-Man.
“We read her script, we were
part of developing that script, we
thought it was great,” Bono said.
The two men attended developmental workshops over the last
three years where the dialogue
was read, characters fleshed out.
It was not until they took a month
off from U2 last fall to work on the
musical that, they said, they
realised the magnitude of turning
the script into a full-blooded
show. “Julie was trying to wrestle
with the logistics as well as the art,
and that’s when I felt fairly impotent,” Bono said.
Bono and the Edge left for a U2
tour in New Zealand in late
November. They said they were
aghast at what they saw on the
videos: the plot was muddled, as
was the music, and Spider-Man
still lacked an ending.
Once Bono and the Edge
returned, they initially agreed
with Taymor to focus on “clarifying the story,” the Edge said.
Some cast members, though,
began
suggesting
radical
changes, like moving the spectacular aerial battle between SpiderMan and the Green Goblin from
the end of Act I to the climax of
Act II — an idea that had
occurred to the Edge too. Berger,
the playwright, began developing
new script ideas.
“Glen was one of the early
believers that there was possibly a
more simple version,” the Edge
said. “Reluctantly I think most of
us came to believe that he was
right.” Those outlines of a new
show are now apparent in the 2.0
version of Spider-Man.
But Bono said he felt the show
was finally greater than the sum of
its parts — parts, though, that did
gave him frissons of excitement.

Allergy tips for gardeners
THERE’S no reason to let allergies keep you from getting your hands dirty. Here are a few simple tips to keep allergies at bay this
planting season:
*Try to do your gardening late in the afternoon. Most plants tend to release their pollen between the hours of 5 am and 10 am, so
pollen counts are likely to be the highest at this time. By late afternoon, actual pollen counts may be higher, but circulating pollen
will be higher in the sky and not near the ground where you are likely to be working. This also protects you from the most damaging
sun exposure.
* Keep clean. Take a shower and wash your hair immediately after gardening to avoid spreading the pollen throughout your home.
People with mold allergies should:
* Wear a mask when turning the compost pile.
* Avoid working with wet mulch or straw.
* Limit indoor plants whose moist soil creates an ideal condition for mold growth.

T’S survival of the fittest,” said
Esther Dormer, a founder of the
Future Fund, a venture capital
firm, who bought the place 11 years ago
as a second home with her husband,
Brian Dormer, an airline pilot. The two,
both 51, live in a Pittsburgh suburb 30
minutes away. “We plant and go,” she
said. “We never mulch, and if something can’t cut it – a plant, the dogs, the
fabric on the furniture – it’s out. We
can’t be fussy here.”
It was a blisteringly hot afternoon,
and the pollen was blowing through the
barn, a genuine Amish number spiffed
up with a collection of atmospheric
cement balls, a reproduction Morsecode signal lamp, 30 silver folding
chairs hanging from weathered iron
spikes, a 24-foot-long table made from
salvaged wood and a pool table covered
in hammered, studded aluminum.
In the corner, a Chesterfield sofa
wore cognac-coloured python-print
vinyl, which is mouse- and mold-proof,
as noted by Lisa Dagnal, a 43-year-old
self-taught designer whose only client is
Esther Dormer.
It was Dagnal whom Dormer turned
to three years ago for decorating help.
“I have this farm,” she said. “It could
look a lot better.”
Dagnal’s first job was to polish up the
barn’s downstairs office. She and
Darrell Frey, a laconic permaculture
expert and property manager who is the
Farm’s resident philosopher and facilitator, covered its ductwork in moss and
birch bark.
The Farm has not always been so
camera-ready. When she and her husband bought the land, it was a fallow
graveyard for old appliances and a pasture for cattle.
Dormer, “a suburban girl who couldn’t keep a houseplant alive,” as she put
it, wanted her son, Max, and daughter,
Maggie, now 17 and 14, to know where
their food came from and had an idea
that she could grow produce and
donate it to the local food bank.
Some food banks, as she learned,
have gleaning programs that will distribute the surplus food a farmer grows.
Dormer’s proposition – to grow produce intended for a food bank – was
unique, said Lisa Scales, chief operating
officer of the Greater Pittsburgh
Community Food Bank.
“I didn’t have a clue,” Dormer said. “I
knew nothing about farming. I thought,
‘Well, what’s the worst that can happen?”’
The property cost just under
$400,000, and Dormer offered the ask-

ing price the day she saw it, on condition that her offer be accepted by midnight, and that the soil be right for
crops.
The soil tested well (the Farm is in a
flood plain, which makes it nutrientrich), but the Dormers spent the first
couple of years harvesting trash, not
food. The fields and forest were mined
with rusted television sets, broken farm
equipment, mysterious parts from the
broken farm equipment, bales of copper wire, aluminum cans, plastic bottles
and dried but fragrant cow patties.
Dormer had had a vision of her children, who were then well under 10, frolicking in verdant pastures filled with
attentive woodland creatures.
“Like the scene in Snow White,
remember?” she said. “Instead, they’d
complain, ‘Do we have to go out to the
stinking farm?’ Because it really, really
stank.”
They hired a farmer, who lived on the
property and planted 10 acres of nutritionally rich crops like kale, collard
greens, carrots and peppers. The food
bank provided volunteers to harvest it.
Before long, the Farm was producing a
reliable yearly crop that the food bank
distributed. Brian Dormer, who works
for United Airlines, is gone four to five
days out of seven; he pitched in when
he could. The children came when their
school schedules allowed.
Esther Dormer, who was attending
every sustainable-agriculture conference she could sign up for, met Frey at
one, and enlisted his help in applying
permaculture principles which are all
about creating efficient and self-sustaining ecological systems like no-till
orchards. She bought an old Amish
barn so the volunteers would have a
place to get out of the sun. And she fantasised about “a joyful coming together,” she said, of eager, like-minded
helpers.
The reality, she discovered, is that
volunteers are not cookie-cutter individuals. Sometimes there would be
teenagers, she said, “running around
trying to poke each other with farm
equipment, or sometimes people
wouldn’t show up at all.” But they harvested a lot of food, more than 150,000
pounds of produce from 2001 through
2007, and Dormer extended her commitment from five years to seven.
“I wasn’t always the best organic
farmer,” she said. “Sometimes I’d just
hide with my girlfriends when the volunteers came. I wasn’t always a slave to
the effort.”
After seven years, Dormer was worn
out by the farming, and her children
had grown into teenagers, more interested in paintball than in crops. Dormer
decided she was ready to enjoy the
place, to turn the working farm into a
weekend getaway.
At first, she consulted landscape
architects.
“But they were all about where to put
the tree,” she said.
Dormer balked at the elaborate site
plan, the plant list and the projected
cost (about $12,000) for a pond that
needed to be shored up.
“I thought, it’s just this little area, I
can’t see doing this for 150 acres all the
way around.”
Meanwhile, Dagnal, who was raising
three boys, and had always decorated
her own home and her friends’ homes,
decided to have an open house to show
off her work: lacquered tables, refinished case goods and pale upholstered
pieces. Dormer was invited by a friend
of a friend and was attracted to
Dagnal’s style, which reminded her of
her own.
An early project involved a pond, its
bank and an old rowboat.
“Esther said, ‘Make this look fabulous,”’ Dagnal recalled. “I cleaned the
boat all up, painted it black and cream.
I had never done anything like that
before. My friends would say, ‘You’re
painting a boat?”’
Now it rests prettily half in, half out of
the water, tethered to an iron post, no
longer a boat so much as a decorative
object.
“We made it fashionable,” Dagnal
said.
She also turned a huge concrete fountain base into a coffee table/terrarium
for the living room of the farmhouse,
filling it with dirt, moss, twigs and
rocks, and topping it with a piece of
acrylic. Frey had to reinforce the floor
so it would not cave in. A laundry room
is now a luxurious bath lounge, with
iron garden chairs upholstered in an
old mink coat Dagnal found at a thrift
shop.
Purists might wince, but Dagnal and
Dormer are having fun gussying up
wheelbarrows, milking stations and
dusty sheds. One outbuilding now
shines with white paint, gilded mirrors
and an artist’s easel. It is a space
inspired by Dagnal’s 10-year-old son,
Will, who liked to play there while his
mother was working.
The merging of the decorative with
the utilitarian occasionally poses problems. In a toolshed, Dagnal created an
installation of salvaged wood, coils of
rope and chains. Its components are
tempting to Frey and the Farm’s workers, who sometimes sneak away with
the parts.
“They have stripped that down to
nothing many times,” Dagnal said.
“When anyone needs anything, that’s
the first place they go.”

RETROSPECT

A designer as dramatist,
and the tales he left behind
Alexander
McQueen
A shoe from the Fall/Winter 2010-11
collection.
HOLLAND COTTER
NYT SYNDICATE
A
HAIRSTYLIST friend of mine used to
place leather bondage gear in her downtown shop window to scare off what she
called “the wrong element,” meaning
anyone wanting a nice wash and trim.
She wanted to be sure that if you sat in her chair, you
were ready to accept whatever look she decided on
for you, because it would change the way you saw
yourself in the world. That was the deal.
“Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, a survey of the career
of the British fashion designer who died last year, a
suicide at 40, is similarly about control and change.
The show, or rather what’s in it, is a button-pushing
marvel: ethereal and gross, graceful and utterly
manipulative, and poised on a line where fashion
turns into something else.
Part of its dynamic is old-fashioned shock. In galleries that combine the look of baronial halls and
meat lockers, clothes come at you like electrical zaps:
a blouse threaded with worms, a coat sprouting
horns, shoes that devour feet. A pert little jacket is
printed with a crucifixion scene; the hair on a fulllength hair shirt is carefully waved and combed; a
corset has a cast-metal animal spine curling out from
behind.
And everywhere there are arresting delicacies. The
yellow-green beadwork is so fine it looks as soft as
moss. Floral-patterned lace has been cut up, flower
by flower, then stitched together again, but only partially, to give a dress the illusion of having being torn.
The details pull you back to the start of the show
after your first wild ride through. And it’s on the second, slower look that some of the prickly contradictions that underlie McQueen’s work, and fashion as a
genre, start to emerge.
McQueen grew up in London, the son of a cabdriver. He made much of his working-class Cockney
roots. They were, along with his homosexuality and
rebelliousness, part of his insider-outsider creden-

tials, his wrong-elementwherever-I-am identity.
At 16 he landed an
apprenticeship with a
Savile Row tailoring firm
that catered to the
British royal family, and he was a
more than apt
pupil. A virtuosic grasp of the
mechanics of
clothes making
– cutting, sewing,
constructing
–
became early hallmarks of his design,
with drapery skills
developing later. He
was always a handson worker: in art terms,
a formalist as much as a
conceptualist.
But it was the conceptualist, the idea man, the storyteller, who began making
news. After a stint with a
theatrical costume company he went to design
school and quickly gained
a reputation for distinctively dark, louche brilliance. He
titled his graduate show Jack

the Ripper Stalks His Victims, signing each piece
with a stitched-in lock of hair. He turned to violent
films like Taxi Driver and The Shining for inspiration, and to tales of persecution (17th-century
witch hunts) and martyrdom (Joan of Arc).
In 1994 he had some commercial success with designs for ultra-low-rise “bumster” pants that helped start an international trend. But he was still most interested
in narratives, in making each new collection an
attention-grabbing drama. One way to get
noticed was by alienating people, and the runway
show for his Highland Rape collection of 1995-96
drew some serious heat.
He said that he meant the show as a commentary on England’s pillaging of Scotland,
where he claimed ancestry. But the sight
of zonked-out models stumbling around
in torn dresses brought accusations that
he was cashing in on abusive images of
women. The bad-boy image, which was
already part of his kit, intensified and
stuck.
Still, he didn’t stay with any
one theme for long, though

through the lens of
Romanticism. And he
eases us into this view with
an introductory gallery of
quite wearable-looking jackets

and emphatic as if ink-drawn.
Beyond that point, however,
drama heats up.

Dress, VOSS, from the Spring/Summer
collection.
Clothes become costumes, with sensuous, sumptuous lives of their own.
What looks like Victorian funerary attire fills one
end of a mirror-lined room: a black ensemble with a
leather halter, a jet gown of billowing silk, and an
awesome black-feathered body suit, pumped up as if
it was about to explode.
By contrast, at the room’s other end, enshrined in
a giant glass casket, there’s a lineup of light, bright
ready-for-heaven wear: a gilded-feather coat with a
skirt of white silk gushing out from below; a long
gray robe printed with faces of angels at the shoulders.
The Highland Rape collection, with which he
asserted a Scottish allegiance, was followed by
another that was an unmistakable, if partly tonguein-cheek, homage to British monarchy, with the two
collections accompanied by volleys of nationalistic
bluster. And although McQueen grumbled about
racist stereotyping in Western fashion, he perpetuated such stereotypes in his Asian- and Africanderived designs.
The Met exhibition passes all this off as manifestations of a Romantic temperament, but you have to
ask critical questions. The chief problem with the
fashion-as-art fad of the 1990s was precisely that it
didn’t ask them.
To take two examples, for its 1997 exhibition The
Warhol Look: Glamour Style Fashion, the Whitney
Museum did little more than fill a floor with Warhol
paintings, back issues of Interview and a Diana
Vreeland tape and basically said: Let’s celebrate.
Two years later the Guggenheim – though it
denies this – effectively rented its Manhattan premises to Giorgio Armani for his retrospective. (Such
deals are now the norm, and the Met is forthright
about stating that most of the money for the
McQueen retrospective comes from the fashion
house called Alexander McQueen.) My point is: If
you’re going to deal with fashion as art, treat it as
art, bring to it the distanced evaluative thinking,
including social and political thinking, that scholars
routinely apply to art.

Dianna Agron romancing Sebastian Stan?
Tom Cruise mulling offer for One Shot thriller
Glee actress Dianna Agron is reportedly dating Gossip Girl actor
Sebastian Stan. “He came to Dianna’s 3pm Glee performance
at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. He waited for her backstage. Once the cast finished the show, Dianna ran backstage to
Sebastian, and they were all over each other! Dianna and
Sebastian love hanging out together. He can definitely hang
with the Glee cast,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted a source as saying. Agron was previously linked to Sebastian’s Captain
America: The First Avenger co-star Chris Evans after meeting
him at a pre-Oscars in February.
TOM Cruise has an offer in hand to star in One Shot,
a thriller about a former military policeman investigating the arrest of a sniper accused of killing five random people. Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked
on the screenplays for several Cruise films in the past
few years, including 2008’s Valkyrie, has adapted
the 2005 Lee Child novel and will also direct the
Paramount project. Cruise, currently filming Rock of
Ages, returns to theaters in December with Mission:
Impossible — Ghost Protocol.

‘Malnourished’ Selena
Gomez misses Monte Carlo
appearance
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
S
Selena
Gomez
ELENA Gomez has explained
what landed her in the hospital last week and forced her
to pull out of a previously
scheduled promotional appearance
for her upcoming film, Monte Carlo.
“I was very malnourished,” Selena
told Access Hollywood recently as she
made an appearance at the Santa
Monica Place Center Plaza in Santa
Monica, California, as she promoted
her new film and performed with her
band, The Scene.
“I was dehydrated and very low on
iron,” she continued of her health
scare. “So, I just gotta take care of
myself.”
As
previously
reported
on
AccessHollywood.com, Selena was
taken to the hospital following a visit
to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
last Thursday, and later underwent
what her representative said were
“routine tests.”
As a result, she canceled a Friday
appearance in Santa Monica to promote her film, and later postponed
what would have been a Sunday
appearance for Monday.
At Monday’s event, Selena said she
was feeling good.
“I’m doing great... Much better,”
she told Access.
“I was very disappointed that I
couldn’t be here, but I’m here now,”
she added of finally greeting the fans
and putting on a short live show.
As for her film, Monte Carlo, which
also stars Leighton Meester and Katie
Cassidy, Selena said she is looking
forward to the movie’s release on July
1.
“I’m kind of nervous to be honest.
It’s my first romantic comedy and I
get to star with some really amazing
co-stars, so it’s a really sweet movie
and I can’t wait for everybody to see
it,” she said.
Denise Richards to tell tale of
her divorce from Charlie Sheen
IANS
A
CTRESS Denise Richards
says she and actor Charlie
Sheen went through “one of
the worst divorces”. Richards
and Sheen, who have two
daughters, Lola, 6, and
Sammy,7,
together,
ended their marriage in
2006 and although the
actress says they once
shared a “beautiful love
story”, she also admits it all
descended into bitterness at
the end.
Explaining her decision to write a
memoir, which is being released next
month, the 40-year-old said she wanted
to reveal what it was like to “struggle”
through the divorce.
“People have only gotten the rotten
stuff so, you know, there was a beautiful
love story between he and I and I know
that it went the way it went, but I talk
more about how I felt during that time
because I feel like a lot of women can
relate to that, going through a divorce
and custody and being a single parent
and trying to work and all of that stuff,”
femalefirst.co.uk quoted Richards as
saying.

Asin Thottumkal and Zarine Khan
say no to bikini
Shah Rukh Khan’s presence adds lustre
to my film: Roshan Abbas
DIRECTOR Sajid Khan is having tough time convincing his
leading actress Asin and Zarine to wear bikini for Housefull 2
(H2). Sajid wants H2 to be as glamourous as the prequel.
The director is expecting his glam girls to don the bikini just
like Lara Dutta, Deepika Padukone and Jiah Khan did in the
original. But Asin and Zarine aren’t comfortable sporting bikini. It is believed that according to Sajid’s instructions Zarine
has lost weight to look glamourous for the film but bikini is
out of the question.
ROSHAN Abbas, who has made his directorial debut Always Kabhi
Kabhi with newcomers, says producer Shah Rukh Khan’s involvement adds lustre to the film. “We can shape a dimaond... but it
will shine only when light falls on it. With Shah Rukh, the film
suddenly becomes larger (than life),” Roshan said. “We were promoting our film in a mall where the song Antenna, which is picturised on Shah Rukh, was being played and we could see people
enjoying and singing that song. This is his popularity and we need
that kind of promotion and support for this film,” he added.

T’S official. Karisma Kapoor (Lolo) is returning to
films after a hiatus. She has signed Vikram Bhatt’s
next — Dangerous Ishq, an erotic thriller in
3-D. Her last release was Mere Jeevan Saathi in 2006.
Says a source, “Lolo never really announced her retirement even
after her marriage to industrialist Sanjay Kapoor in 2003. Despite
being busy with her domestic life and subsequent motherhood
(daughter Samaira was born in 2005, son Kiaan Raj in 2010),
Karisma has always had film offers. She has remained in circulation by signing many endorsements but has now finally given the
nod to Vikram’s film. His last film Haunted in 3-D did well at the
box office. That was the clincher for her.”
Says Vikram, “When I first gave Karisma a narration, she loved
the story and the script. It’s a woman-centric film and she plays
the main character. Dangerous Ishq is a thriller based on pastlife regression. We start shooting in September in Rajasthan.”
Karisma is looking forward to the film. “It’s a role I haven’t
done before. The script is very interesting and working in the
3-D format will be a new experience for me,” she says.

Shammi Kapoor his idols.
Asked how he manages so many
things together, Hrithik said, “the
definition of a successful
man is not depending on
how much money a person
has earned or how much
fame he has, it is about
how he manages his
time.”
“If you are a slave to
your time, then you
can’t be successful man.
The person who takes
out time for everything
he wants to do, that person
is truly successful. Time management is important. It’s an
everyday practice that I’m
learning and I need to learn.
There are too many things
happening so I need to
improve my time
management techniques,” he added.
RITHIK Roshan is known for his impressive
dance moves and the star, set to make his TV
debut with a dance reality show, feels honoured when seen as a symbol for dance in the
country.
“I find every dance difficult. Whenever I start
rehearsals, I start from zero and I feel that I can’t do
this. Then I slowly learn. I’m no God of dance, but I’m
very happy with the fact that I have become a symbol
for dance,” Hrithik said.
He will judge Star Plus’ reality show Just Dance,
which goes on air this Saturday.
“I’m blessed that I have become a symbol for something that stands for such a great talent. But I’m not
the best dancer in the country, city or my neighbourhood. I’m just a very hardworking dancer,” he added.
Hrithik will judge the show along with choreographers Farah Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant.

impeccable moves and flexible dancing style, calls Michael
