Christmas Party Brings
Holiday Cheer
On December 19, all employees, independent contractors and
their families were welcomed into the Big Tent for our annual
Christmas Party. The theme of this year’s celebration was “An
Old Fashioned Christmas,” with glittery nutcrackers, cozy
fireplaces, and red, green and white decorations placed high
and low.
Food was aplenty, and many activities kept the partygoers
busy. Some families had their pictures taken with Santa or
the Disney characters, while others enjoyed having their
faces painted, getting temporary tattoos, receiving whimsical
balloon animals, playing games, and making their own picture
frames at the arts and crafts area. Still others could be found
dancing to the beat of the D.J.
A sincere thank you to the many employees and independent
contractors who bought raffle tickets this year. All proceeds go
to The Russell Home for Atypical Children, and you helped
raise more than $10,900 that will assist the home with their
many special needs.

last 4 years, managing digital marketing and events for hospitality

Ashley Young. Ashley received her Bachelor
of Science in Hospitality and Tourism
Management from North Dakota State
University in 2013. She then worked for the
Phoenician Resort as an Executive Meeting
Specialist. Ashley joins Brianna Moody’s
team, who handles the Phoenician. Ashley’s
enthusiasm and hard work make her a great addition.

We are excited to announce that Christy
Hornbuckle has been appointed Hello! Florida’s
Director of Product Development in South
Florida. Since joining us as a Sales Coordinator
in 2009, Christy has shown great enthusiasm
and an intense desire to “never settle for what
has just been achieved, but always try to take it
to the next level.” These qualities were just two
of many reasons why she was promoted to the role of Account
Manager in 2010 and then to Product Development Manager in
2012. She has exhibited a ceaseless desire to improve her team’s
performance and processes. No matter how hectic the pace or
how heavy the workload, her commitment to customers and
co-workers is absolute. Christy’s leadership will make a huge
difference for us in the years ahead.

Mears Transportation is excited to announce
the promotion of Lionel Wells to the position of
Manager-Airport Operations. Lionel has worked
with us for more than three years as a Starter on
the docks at OIA and as a dispatcher in the Red
Lot, where his outstanding work ethic has earned
him the respect of the OIA staff and drivers alike;
this will hold him in good stead as he moves into
his new role. Before joining Mears, Lionel worked in the Security
industry in Orlando and owned and operated a limousine service

Mears recently participated in the District
5 Job Fair presented by Commissioner
Regina I. Hill at the Northwest Community
Center (NCC). For many years, the NCC has
been educating individuals interested in
employment, as well as offering programs
to assist youth and senior citizens. With 28
LTWSV`LYZPUULLKVMX\HSPÄLKJHUKPKH[LZ
and more than 350 applicants in need of
employment opportunities, the December
job fair helped bring them together.
Orlando’s District 5 includes more
than 40,000 residents from downtown
to Hiawassee Rd. and points between,
including many historic neighborhoods,
such as Parramore, Rock Lake, Malibu,
Clear Lake, Ivey Lane, Lake Sunset, the
Willows and the Mercy Dr. corridor. It also
includes Jones High School, Nikki’s Place
Restaurant, the Amway Events Center, the
Florida Citrus Bowl and the new Dr. Phillips
Performing Arts Center.
Many thanks to Commissioner Hill and her
staff for organizing the event and allowing
Mears to have a continued role in helping

Karen Diaz, MDS Supervisor Billing & Collections, was the lucky winner of
the mountain bicycle from our fall Wellness Fair. The bike was presented to

Much-Anticipated Performing
Arts Center Now Open
Phase 1 of Downtown Orlando’s new Dr. Phillips Center for the
Performing Arts opened on November 6, 2014. When both phases of
the center are complete, it will include three performance theaters, an

The new center is also home to the Orlando Ballet and the Orlando
Philharmonic Orchestra, and the arts education spaces will host dance,
music and theater classes. Primary parking for the center is located in
the City Commons Garage on Boone Ave, and valet parking is available
directly in front of the Center on Magnolia Ave.

the performing arts center and its education and entertainment venues,
the two-block site ultimately will accommodate new retail and public
spaces that enhance city life and create a vibrant gathering place.
The performing arts center is named for philanthropist and citrus
magnate Dr. Phillip Phillips (1874–1959), and the center is within
walking distance of the house he and his wife, Della, owned on
Lucerne Circle. Dr. P. Phillips hosted many concerts, bringing acclaimed
musicians from all around the world to play on his front lawn for the
entire Orlando community to enjoy.
