Synopsis
This year, on the 30th of January, Eusoff Hall invites you
to join us for a production that promises to enthrall
you with a deliciously dark plot, a captivating cast and
dances that will fill your hearts and excite your senses.
Welcome to Death Row, where those who have
committed the worse crimes against humanity sit and
wait for their clocks to run out. We follow the prison
counselor as he unravels the lives and secrets of four
convicted murderers; a true psychopath, a distraught
mother, a crooked lawyer and a filial son.
As we listen to their stories, the counselor slowly realizes
that perhaps, we aren’t so different after all. Are they
more human than we thought, or do we all have a little
bit of monster in us?

Message
Justice Lai Siu Chiu
Justice Lai Siu Chiu received her L.L.B. from the University of Singapore in 1972, and her
L.L.M. from University of London in 1977. She was admitted as an advocate and solicitor
in Singapore in 1973. Justice Lai began her career with the Law firm Sim Teow Gok & Co in
1973. Before her appointment to the Bench, Justice Lai was a Senior Partner with one of
Singapore’s largest law firms Allen & Gledhill to which she was attached from 1973 until
her elevation to the Bench on 2 May 1991. Justice Lai held the distinction of being the
first female Judicial Commissioner in 1991, and subsequently, the first female Judge on the
Supreme Court in 1994. After more than 22 years of distinguished service, Justice Lai retired
temporarily from her appointment as Supreme Court Judge in 2013. She has been appointed
a Senior Judge to the Supreme Court with effect from 5 January 2015 for three years.
First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Eusoff
Hall for inviting me to your annual Dance Production. This is a production
that showcases our vibrant and creative youths and I am proud to be here.
On this evening of the Dance Production performance I am certain that
the Eusoffians involved in staging this wonderful event are looking back at
the long months of toil with an equal measure of satisfaction and relief. I
am impressed by the fortitude amongst Eusoffians in putting up an entire
production by themselves against what must have been overwhelming
odds. Juggling the demands of academia with the level of rehearsals and
organizational coordination that such a production must require could
not have been a simple task. I can only say that the passion, commitment
and dedication illustrated by Eusoffians are truly inspiring and highly
commendable.
04
The fruits of their labour are manifested in tonight’s show of which we
are the happy beneficiaries. To the cast and crew of “Redemption Row”
who have worked so very hard to bring about tonight’s performance,
my heartiest congratulations and sincerest thanks. I look forward to an
undoubtedly splendid and enjoyable performance.

Welcome to the twenty-fourth
Eusoff Hall Dance Production! This
signature event of Eusoff Hall, held
annually since 1991, showcases the
talent and creativity of Eusoffians.
This year’s Dance Production,
entitled,
“Redemption
Row”,
has a captivating plot revolving
around the relationship between
a prison counsellor and four
convicted murderers and lessons in
humanity from the lives and secrets
unravelled.
A wholly student-run production,
students manage all aspects of
this production right from scriptwriting, directing, to the building
of sets, sewing of the costumes as
well as promotion and marketing
of the event. Tonight’s staging
of Dance Production would not
have been possible without the
dedication and hard work of the
hall residents ivolved. Over the past
six months or so, over two hundred
members of the Dance Production
team have worked tirelessly to
coordinate their diverse talents,
skills, knowledge and experiences
in order to enhance their collective
performance and make tonight’s
show a success.
I wish to note that proceeds from
this year’s Dance Production will
go in aid of our own Eusoff Bursary
to help residents with financial
needs. Eusoff Hall has a total of
485 students from both Singapore
and overseas and the Eusoff Bursary
helps ensure that no deserving
student would be deprived of the
residential life experience due to
financial constraints.
Before I end, I would like to
congratulate Samantha Chua and
Vivian Liew, the Producers, and the
entire Dance Production Team for
their perseverance and diligence in
bringing us tonight’s performance.
I owe special thanks to Dr. Lee
Chian Chau, the Resident Fellow in
charge of Dance Production, for his
oversight, guidance and support
of the team. I am also grateful to
Madam Rashidah, the Hall Manager,
and the whole Eusoff office staff for
their ever steadfast and valuable
support to the Dance Production
team.
Last but not least, I want to thank
our Guest of Honor, Justice Lai Siu
Chiu, for making time to grace this
performance. My deep appreciation
also goes to all other guests,
sponsors, well-wishers, parents, and
Eusoff Alumni for supporting this
event.
Now, sit back, relax and enjoy
the performance! Wishing you a
pleasant evening!

Being part of the main committee for Eusoff Hall Dance
Production (EHDP) ever since my first year in Eusoff
has truly been an exhilarating experience that till date,
I’m still very thankful for. Having to miss out on the
actual production last year was something that I feel
regretful towards and to be given the opportunity to
step up from Dance Director to Producer this year has
got to be the highlight for my penultimate year in NUS.
Samantha Chua
In the past two years, EHDP has given me the platform
to venture into choreography and learning new genres
of dance that I was never really exposed to previously.
The friendships that I forged through the numerous
dance practices that we had to head down to together
are one of the few takeaways that I’m very grateful for.
However in particular to this year’s production, I feel
very blessed to be working with an amazing group of
friends throughout this entire journey of “building up”
Redemption Row from scratch, to what we have to
stage and offer to the audience today.
First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has
shown their support for EHDP 14/15, especially my
family and Vi, who has been my ‘partner-in-crime’
in this. We started with a whatsapp conversation
while we were on exchange, laughing off how being
producers together would be so unlikely. And yet
today, here we are backstage, excited for the show to
begin! It has not been an easy journey and there were
moments of self-doubt but I would just like to share a
quote that kept me going:
“You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure
in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without
failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that
you might as well not have lived at all – in which case,
you fail by default.” - J.K. Rowling, 2008
Through blood, sweat, tears and laughter, we overcame
obstacles as a production team and we have come a
long way since. Everyone, be it the administrative,
creative or technical wing have worked hard and for
that I am truly grateful for everyone’s efforts. Every year
it never ceases to amaze me how Eusoffians are able
to dedicate themselves to their various commitments,
EHDP and juggle their studies at the same time. Tonight
the hard work we’ve put in will unfold before your eyes
so prepare to be amazed!
Finally, thank you for gracing us with your presence,
and I hope you enjoy the show!

To all who had contributed to EHDP 14/15 regardless
of on-stage or back-stage, I sincerely thank you for
helping to make this production happen and not just
that, but in making it a very successful one.
If I were to be given a second chance at this,
I would still take it up without a doubt.
Thank you for the wonderful memories.

Drama has always been close to my heart; there is a certain magic that stays in the
theatre, on stage and off stage. People always say that they shouldn’t act because
they haven’t had the experience, but I believe that the stage, not just acting but
also the entire production, gives you an experience that you would never forget.
It’s why I keep coming back to it, whether as a performer, a director or just as a
stage crew. This is my second directorial experience, and also my second year in
Eusoff’s production - while the first year offered me the grandeur of being on stage,
my second year opened my eyes to the intricacies of being in the production team.
And I daresay, it has been a great journey.
This year’s story is extremely dark; a psychological counsellor examines and
interacts with four inmates on death row. However, I do think that there are very
relevant themes in the script - that there are monsters in all of us, and that we are
sometimes the ones that ruin ourselves. But most important of all, that there is
always hope and even compassion in the darkest of places. And more often than
not, it is hope that keeps us going.
DIRECTORS’
MESSAGE
I would like to thank my
wonderful cast, for all their
effort and companion on this
journey; Casey for tolerating me
and helping me out extensively;
the production team, for making
everything possible; Shannen
Tan, my director last year, for
believing in me enough to
entrust me with this task; my
family and friends, for always
supporting me; and all of you in
the audience, for being part of
this magic.

Hall has always been a place to pick
up new skills, and I am confident
many Eusoffians will echo my
sentiments. As with previous
years, EHDP has been a wonderful
journey and I am truly thankful for
the opportunities the hall has given
us. There was never a dull moment
in EHDP, and I am truly touched to
see how each dancer has grown
both in skill and character. What
I had envisioned the production to look like
has materialized on stage through the efforts
of not just the performers, but also through
the important people behind-the-scenes.
EHDP is going to take a very dark twist this
year. Nonetheless, let our performers bring
you through an exhilarating journey filled with
energy, hysteria and sacrifice. Watch as months
of dedication and perseverance in
the form of late night sessions and
rehearsals unfold on stage into a
brilliant performance by new and
seasoned dancers alike.
To the dancers, we perform as a
team and no one dancer is of lesser
importance than another. Cherish
the bonds that you have forged
and remember the hours you have
committed for tonight, the stage
belongs to every one of us.
To the gracious audience, simply
listen to the music – let our bodies do
the talking, and let your mind do the
wandering.

Cast
Prisoner 999 by Esther Yong
10
999 finds thrill in the act
but excitement in the
process. Her demure
appearance is offset by
her excitable, peculiar
demeanour. A serial killer
who was captured only
because of her mistakes
wrought by her ambition,
she is unfazed by the
death sentence facing
her. Through her, we see
a darker side to humanity,
and that there are some
people in this world that
we should be afraid of.
Prisoner 998/Heather by Phan Zheng Jun Prisoner 997 by Jason Fong
A naive, optimistic girl by
nature, 998 unravelled her
own future due to jealousy
and heartbreak. In coping
with the grief and pain of
losing a lover and a child,
she puts up a strong front
to dispel sympathy and pity.
However, she grew blind to
her own need for counsel
and assurance, digging a
deeper grave for herself
beyond her own capital
punishment.
997 started out as a
cocky, successful, but
crooked lawyer. Unable
to grasp the fact that he
had been outsmarted
by an intern, 997
blames his crime on
her deviousness and
scheming nature. In
his anger and betrayal,
he blinds himself to
his own faults and
wayward practices, and
believes that he doesn’t
deserve his sentence.
Prisoner 996/Patrick by Kiral Lin The Counsellor by Tahmid Nasif
Often assumed to have
been an ex-gang member
who returned to his own
ways, 996 prefers to be
silent and contemplative.
The only prisoner to have
frequent visitors, he
values his family above
all else, and would pay
any price to protect
them from harm. Named
after the patron saint of
second chances, does
996 also get a second
chance?
A confident fresh graduate,
the counsellor entered the
prison thinking that he could
learn from or perhaps take
advantage of his experience.
However, he soon finds
that he has gotten more
than he had bargained for.
His journey from the first
prisoner he encounters
to his last becomes one
of reflection and growth.
He asks the fundamental
question: are these death
row inmates closer to us
than we would like to think?
The Warden by Yang Sheng
A cynical realist, the
Warden doesn’t think
that the inmates are
anything more than
scum. It’s the judge’s
job to decide whether
they’re guilty, not
his. He only wants
to complete his job,
and hopes everyone
else would do his job
properly.

From the three of us choreographers for
Dance 1, it’s been a great privilege to be
choreographers for EHDP’15. Through this
journey as choreographers, we faced several
challenges such as conflicting schedules, be it
with IHG or personal commitments, which make
it hard for everyone to commit to trainings. This
is especially tough for our dance as breakdancing
requires hours and hours of training. It’s not
something which one can pull off overnight. To
be able to nail even simple moves and stunts
requires months and months of trainings for
normal breakdancers, hence to be able to piece
an item together with many dancers with no
background in breakdancing within these few
months proves to be an extra feat for us. The
three of us decided that there will not be a divide
between us choreographers and our dancers and
therefore decided to include ourselves in the item. We are around simply
to provide guidance, and hope that our dancers will not treat our item as
a mere one off performance, but instead a first step to gaining exposure to
breakdancing. Our ultimate aim will be that even after EHDP they will still
be interested in this dance, and we can hold sessions and train together, for
dance is not simply about the outcome of the performance, but a great deal
of it is about the journey there. As such, every move and stunt shown on
stage tonight is the product of hours and hours of literally blood, sweat and
tears from tough training, over the past few months. Dance is infinite.

Step inside and take a look. Here is where hardcore criminals who have
committed the most heinous of crimes reside. Where corrupted souls
are confined and kept away from the rest of society; where time seems
to come to a standstill within these walls. We have nothing to lose,
nothing to fear, nothing to live and fight for, except the brothers who
stand beside us in this dark abyss. Welcome to our jail. We will break
you apart. We will make you break down. We are - the JAILBREAKERS.

EHDP holds a special place in our hearts as it’s a production that allows
inexperienced dancers and actors to take part. Being involved in a
production at a scale this large is not easy to come by and the opportunities
given to all Eusoffians willing to learn something new is truly something
not to be taken for granted. And so, we decided to choreograph an item for
EHDP as we ourselves wanted to try something new this year (we have never
choreographed before). More importantly, we wanted to share our love for
dance with the new dancers. In the short 4 months leading up to this concert,
we pushed our limits and discovered much more about ourselves not only in
terms of dance. We learnt that translating our crazy imagination into reality
isn’t that easy after all, but sometimes new possibilities are created with the
very spark of each and every dancer we have - and we must say we are indeed
very lucky to have such hardworking dancers. If you must ask what inspired
us the most, we’ll have to say that it was the dancers themselves. Especially
seeing the new dancers continuously putting in effort to improve and better
themselves, we couldn’t be happier. Lastly, we hope that we were able to give
the new dancers (and the old) an enjoyable experience.

Temptation. Seduction. Obsessions. Destruction.
It was a trying journey.
Being an all girls item is not easy; there were certain expectations that
we had to live up to. Of course, it was also extremely enriching and
inspiring watching the dancers grow and learn together, especially
the non-experienced dancers. Practices were always eventful with
occasional outbursts of craziness. Going crazy together, laughing
and dancing together really made choreographing the item a truly
enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

After four years in DP as a dancer/
choreographer/main committee member/

We all have demons, our troubles, our past experiences, our hopes and our
fears - what differentiates us is how we deal with them, whether we choose
to feed them or not.
As Heather struggles to move on in her life, she finds herself constantly
being held back by her past, fighting the demons in her head. This dance
represents the struggle that all of us, and Heather, go through as we try to
find the strength to resist our darkness and pull through to the other side.

BAD BOYS FOR LIFE!
My brothers come from all walks of life. We don’t necessarily share the same
home, but fate has brought us all together – we are different, yet so similar.
From one brother, now I have many. This sense of belonging is something I
have never felt before! We ate together, worked together and fought hard for
one another. I felt empowered being around them, and I thought we all had a
trust. Why trust? Because brothers go through thick and thin together right?
We never leave each other no matter what happens! Well, at least that’s what
they always say……

For us, this is our second year choreographing for DP and our sixth year
working together, but it is the first time we are choreographing a Hip-hop item.
Nonetheless, we still find excitement and fulfillment from choreographing
together. Feeding of each other’s craziness and energy, I think we have really
made something out of this item. The road of choreography is always not an easy
one as it challenges our creative mind and ability to make meaning out of the
music. Moreover, many of ours dancers are either new or inexperienced in this
genre. However, we are glad that we managed to pull through and are grateful
for the dancers’ faith in us in making this item work. We are especially grateful
to each and every one of our dancers for their commitment and effort. We will
never forget the long practices sessions together, the epic supper thereafter,
and of course the final moments on stage where we presented the item as one
dance. To our beloved dancers, continue to groove wherever you go!

This choreography
experience is a beautiful
highlight of my freshmen
life in NUS. From the
moment I’ve received this
choreographic project, I
found myself constantly
thinking about it in my
head. The process has not
only helped me to grow
as a dancer, at the same
time taught me many
values in life. It is a great
opportunity for me to
develop my ideas and craft;
exploring a wide range of
movement vocabulary. The
process is not a smooth
one I would say. There are
tough times where I faced
choreography block and
problems such as miscommunication with my dancers. It instills the value
of perseverance in me, as I strengthened my belief and confidence for
the dance piece and carry on. This dance may seem to be a technically
challenging piece or abstract in some opinion, I am more than happy
to open for various interpretations by the audience. However, the only
expectation I have as a choreographer is for my dancers to understand the
meaning behind the choreography and the dance itself. What matters the
most is not how the final product will look like, but rather, how each dancer
shine in their own way after understanding the choreographic intention.
I feel that DP is about people taking flight in dance, where they step out
of their comfort zones and express themselves with music and emotions.
‘Nothing Compares’ is a piece dedicated for my family, friends that have
been there for me (especially when things aren’t going well and I needed a
shoulder to lean on.) and lastly my 16 amazing dancers. I am really grateful
for them for their effort and hard work, to recreate the ideas on my mind
and formulate on stage. The harmony and support of my dancers made
them truly a wonderful group to work with and I could not ask for more.

As a first year, my involvement with

more than fruitful. The experience

THE NEXT CHAPTER
Bidding farewell hurts, especially when you know you will never say
“hello” again. However, every adversity has its silver lining. As loved ones
depart from this world, we move on to the next chapter of life, holding
them dear in our memories. The concept of the item revolves around
overcoming the pain of losing someone special and having a redeeming
opportunity to make a difference in another individual’s life, in hope of a
better tomorrow.

As one chapter closes,
another
opens.
Love lost, dreams
shattered, yet an
opportunity to begin
life anew appears.
Sadness, anger, and

silver lining is hidden

we hold dear tells us
