Many car experts use rubbing
alcohol to shine car windows.
However, it is possible that the car
windows are permanently etched from
the heat of the sun. If after cleaning
the film returns, contact a professional;
the windows may need replacing.

had great success using an iron set low,
to barely melt the wax. Sandwich the
waxy fabric in paper towel and dab
with the tip of the iron. The melted

Dear Sue,
In order to soften brown sugar, put
it in a microwavable container and
place it in the microwave with a small
bowl full of water beside it. Microwave
for about one minute. If it is still hard,
microwave for an additional 30
seconds. Repeat until sugar is soft,
being careful not to burn the sugar. To
prevent future hardening, the most
common solutions are storing pieces
of bread, marshmallows or halved
apples with brown sugar. But the best
little gadget for softening is a little piece
of moistened clay. These can be
purchased at most stores where
household items are sold.

Hi Linda,
Here is an easy recipe using products
that you likely already have on hand.
Into an empty squeeze bottle combine
a half-cup of your favourite hair
conditioner with one cup white vinegar
and one cup hot water. Gently stir. Add
one-quarter cup homemade liquid
fabric softener per wash load.
Here’s a tip using dish soap that my
friend Rosalee recently passed on. A
colleague of hers uses dish soap as a
pre-wash on stains. Rub a small
amount onto the stain, leave for 10 to
15 minutes, and soak the item in water
for approximately half an hour, before
laundering as usual. Works on old

fruit or veggies home from the store
(usually in a plastic bag), stick a dry

Feather or fan, palm adds exotic tropical touch

There are thousands of
species of palm trees ranging
from desert palms to palm
trees that live in the understory
of tropical rain forests. Not all
— in fact, not many — are
suitable to be grown indoors
as potted plants.
Palms trees are elegant
plants that lend a sense of
majestic tropical grandeur to
an interior landscape. If you
think you might like to add a
palm tree to your interior
garden, choose carefully and
read plant labels so that you
get a palm that will be
relatively happy in your home.
Generally palms are divided
into two general groupings,
feather and fan. The latter are
usually not suited to use
indoors, but it is within the
feather palms that we can find
some species that will perform
satisfactorily indoors.
The term feather palm
comes from the leaf structure
of such palms. The leaflets are
arranged along the sides of the
leaf stalk to create fronds that
have a feathery appearance.
There are three palms that
are the most suited to indoor
culture and one of them is the
parlour palm. These are tall,
upright growing plants whose
fronds do not cascade as those
of some palms do.
Parlour palms are large
plants and if you decide to
acquire one, get as small a
specimen as you can because
it will grow quite quickly and
will
eventually
outgrow its indoor
space.
Palm
trees
cannot be
t o p trimmed;
the fronds
emerge from a
central growing
tip and if the tops are
cut off, the palm will die.
Other than removal of
damaged or brown
leaves to improve
the aesthetics of
the tree, a palm
should not be pruned.
Two other feather palms
that will acclimatize to
being grown indoors are
the kentia palm and the
lady palm. They have
similar growth habits
and they differ from the
parlour palm in that they
are not quite as tall and they
are a bit wider so occupy more
space in the interior landscape.
Although palms seem
exotic, the above-mentioned
species are relatively low-care
plants. They are not subject to
frequent insect or disease
problems, although when
choosing a specimen in a retail
establishment, check the
undersides of the leaves for
mealy bugs and spider mites.
As with any newly
purchased plant, you may
want to take precautionary
action when you get the plant
home by enclosing it in a large
plastic bag and spraying some
aerosol insecticide into the bag
and then sealing the bag for a
couple of hours — or spray the
plant
thoroughly
with
insecticidal soap.
You also may want to isolate
the palm from your other
plants and examine it carefully
for a week or so before
introducing it to the other
plants in your interior
landscape.
All of these palms prefer
part shade, so any location that
receives bright indirect light
will suit them. They will
appreciate direct sun from a
window during the winter but
this light exposure will be too
strong during the summer.
When you purchase a palm,
it will probably be potted in a
sandy soil — palms demand
good drainage and a light soil.
Don’t be tempted to
immediately re-pot your new
palm, or at least do not
increase the pot size if you do
plant it into a different
container.
It might be best to simply
slip its existing container into
an attractive jardinière as
palms are shallow-rooted and
resent having their roots
disturbed. They also do not
like to be over-potted, which is
fortunate because keeping
your palm in a smaller pot will
reduce its rate of growth so
that it will not outgrow its
location in the indoor garden
too quickly.
Like other indoor foliage
plants, water less
frequently and
fertilize not at
all in the
winter.
Increase the use of fertilizer
and frequency of watering
during the summer; keep the
soil moderately moist but not
sodden — palms are not water
plants and resent wet feet.
Remove
damaged
or
completely brown fronds but
be cautious about removing
fronds that begin to turn
yellow. Palm trees continue to
draw nutrients from yellowing
leaves, and continue to do so
until the leaves are completely
dead and brown.
Removal of such fronds too
soon deprives the palm of
nutrients and weakens the
plant. Give a palm tree a
shower once in a while —
preferably with non-softened
water.
Whether in a public space,
in an apartment foyer, or in a
private residence, a palm tree
can add graceful beauty to an
indoor space. This wonderfully
exotic plant will add a tropical
touch wherever it is used.

On Jan. 2, a group of students and
their parents brought in the new year
with a “pretty cool” day of fundraising
at the East End Community Centre.
A group of about 20 kids from École
New Era and École Harrison schools
are going to Quebec, and the parents’
group decided to augment the usual
food and chocolate fundraisers with
some creative computer gaming.
“We thought we'd embrace the idea
of building some community, getting
kids together to hack away at Minecraft
for a day and get some competitive play
in as well,” said James Chambers, one
of the parents.
“There were hundreds of dollars in
prizes, snacks available and lunch
provided. It was a pretty cool day.”
The event saw about 35 kids come out
for a day of exploring, building,
competition and group missions playing
Minecraft.
“Honestly, I was blown away by what
the kids were able to create,” Chambers
said. “In one day, there were working
machines, traps, mazes, pixel art, and
even a mansion with bedrooms, a
backyard swimming pool and more.”
It was so successful, the parents are
planning the next fundraiser (with more
Minecraft) on Feb. 21. For information

Kittens that need to be bottlefed or supplemented with milk
should be fed a “kitten milk
replacer” designed specifically
for cats.
While some people have cats
that tolerate small amounts of
milk here and there, it is
important to be aware that
issues can develop over time
and with age. Your cat’s
digestive system is not designed
to handle dairy products.
If you really want to give
your cat a little milk here and
there, purchase a milk replacer
or a “cat milk” from a store or
veterinary clinic that carries
them.
These
products
are
formulated for cats, and while
some do contain milk
products, they are modified to
reduce lactose and balance the
whey and casein ratio to ensure
they are digestible for cats.

The Void fills this month’s void in Manitoba Music Makers

Frank McGwire is a veteran of the
local radio industry, a musician and
booster of the music scene in Brandon and Westman.

I’ve said it before and I’ll be
happy to say it again — this
column exists because of the
local
music
and
entertainment scene.
So when a local group
approaches me for the
purposes of some gratis PR,
when time and space allow I
get right to it. After all, that
is my modus operandi when
it comes to “Happenings on
the Scene”: When people
make things happen through
their music or music-based
events, I let people know.
This week I’d like to switch
lanes and head down an
avenue we don’t usually tread
in this forum. We’re going to
bring your attention to a
rather new metal act to hail
from the City O’ Wheat —
The Void.
It was brought to my
attention that this hard
working and even harder
rocking crew recently found
out that they qualified for the
Wacken Metal Battle in
Winnipeg.
Naturally they were really
excited
to
have
this
opportunity. After all, the
Wacken is held in Germany
and it’s the largest outdoor
band battle festival on the
face of the planet to which
thousands upon thousands of
metal heads from various
points of the globe converge.
Although their Winnipeg
show didn’t go as planned
(they were edged out by a
Winnipeg band), I give these
guys an A for effort. As a
result
they’ve
earned
“Happenings” Manitoba
Music Makers Monthly
acknowledgement
for
January.
There will be many more
contests and gigs for The
Void if they continue with
their drive and desire behind
the music they make and
perform when they take to
the stage.
Speaking of which, the
guys in The Void are no
strangers to stages here in BTown, according to drummer
David Todd.
“We have played several
local shows over the last year
at the North Hill Inn. We
have opened for bands like
Exes for Eyes and Tribune,”
he said.
The guys have also
branched out to include
promoters on their rock ’n’
roll resume and Todd says
there’ll be more of that action
to come.
“In November we put on
an all-ages show at Park
Community Centre. That was
the first show that our band
has actually put on and it was
such a great experience that
we’ve decided to do more.”
After their bid to advance
to the Wacken battle at a
show earlier this month at
The Zoo in Winnipeg’s
Osborne Village, The Void
is set to play a homecoming
show of sorts and everyone
who appreciates the heaviest
of heavy metal is invited,
Todd said.
“We are playing another
all ages show at the East
End Community Centre on
Saturday, Feb. 7.” The
shows will continue into
March as the guys are set to
play the opening slot on the
bill when Exes for Eyes
come through Brandon

CNIB is thanking more than 120 volunteers, the Shoppers Mall in Brandon and the people of Westman for helping to make its holiday
gift-wrap centre a big success. The centre, which was open at the Shoppers Mall from Dec. 5 to Dec. 24, raised $13,520. The mall

Resource Centre has received a cheque for $10 666 from the
Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life Program.
The cheque was presented by Kevin Lussier and Brittany
Aube on Jan. 13 to Jodi Wyman and Stephanie Doerksen of
the Women’s Resource Centre.
“We have such a small budget, so this is greatly helpful,”
said Wyman, chair of the centre’s board of directors.
The funds will be used to support and expand the Wellness
Program at the resource centre. The Wellness Program is an
ongoing program that offers free workshops on topics related
to women’s health and wellness.
Currently, the Wellness Program offers free yoga classes on
the first and third Wednesday of every month. The funds from
