Knights of Columbus
Free Throw Championship
All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are
invited to participate in the local level of
competition for the 2015 Knights of Columbus
Free Throw Championship. The competition will
be jointly sponsored by our parish Knights of
Columbus council as well as Saint Theresa and
Saint John Vianney councils (Saint Joseph’s
parish) and Sacred Heart councils. It will be held
on Sunday evening, 25 January at 5:30 PM in the
Hanlon Center. Registration will be held on the
day of the event, beginning at 5:00 PM. The
District Competition will also be held that day
immediately following the local contests. There is
no charge to participate. Proof of age is required.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw
Championship is held annually, with winners
progressing through local, district, regional and
state competitions. All boys and girls 9 to 14 years
old are eligible to participate and will compete in
their respective age / gender divisions. Last year
more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in
over 3,600 local competitions. For more

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
Did you know that Assumption Parish has a
Respect Life Ministry? The group will meet
regularly on the second Tuesday of each month to
discuss Pro-Life issues and how they pertain to us
as a parish community.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday,
February 10. We’ll meet at 9:00 a.m. in the
parish office kitchenette AND we’ll meet at 7:00
p.m. in the Coll Room. Choose which time
best fits your schedule. We’ll be discussing future
events to promote pro-life in our parish.

Parishioner, Luke Myers, is a Lion’s Club LEO.
The LEO’s are young adults under the guidance of
the LIONS club. Their main function is to be
involved in various community service projects.
One of their projects is placing and maintaining an
eye-glass collection box at locations throughout
the community. Please use the collection box that
is located at the entrance of our church for old,
unbroken eye-glasses. The glasses ar e collected,
processed and dispensed to individuals who
cannot access or afford to purchase new ones.

entrances of the church following each Mass for
our annual Souper Bowl of Caring.

New Bethany Ministries, and the Ecumenical
Soup Kitchen. Please help our youth to help
those in need!
Youth assistance needed: To suppor t our
young parishioners as they celebrate God’s
forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation
for the first time on February 21, we ask parish
youth in grades 5 – 12 to assist us with:
♦ Set-up of the Hanlon Center on Friday,
Friday, February 20, 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. and/or;
♦ Participation in a Gospel presentation and
hospitality help for the First Reconciliation
service on Saturday, February 21, 10 – 11
a.m. (This will also require attendance at a
practice for the Gospel presentation on Tues.,
Feb. 17, 3:15 – 4:15 p.m.)

Beginning February 5, 2015, we invite
parishioners to participate in 50 days of prayer for
our Confirmation candidates. If you ar e
interested in praying for a specific candidate from
then until March 26 (Confirmation Day), please
pick a card from the basket on the windowsill of
the church. Place the card with the candidate's
name somewhere at home where the whole family
will remember to pray for that candidate as we
prepare to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit in
the lives of our 2015 candidates and be renewed
as a parish family in the Holy Spirit!
Our parish is blessed to have the Children’s
Liturgy of the Word every Sunday (except
holidays) at the 10 a.m. Mass. Parents, encourage
your children (preschool through grade 3) to
participate when the celebrant calls the children to
come forward. If a child is reluctant to come by
him/herself, a parent or older sibling may
accompany him/her.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Readings: Jon 3:1–5, 10;
Ps 25:4–9;
1 Cor 7:29–31;
Mk 1:14–20
Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh,
scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their actions”
how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns.
Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1
Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their
everyday activities, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things
they are doing. A new day has dawned.
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of
God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their
nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had
dawned.
Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the
Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn’t a new day
dawn today for us as well?
TIME IS ALWAYS SHORT
Paul warned the Corinthians, “[T]he time is running out” (1 Corinthians 7:29). In reflective
moments, we know time is always short. There is a story told of a holy Sufi who, asked what grace had
brought him, said that he awoke each morning feeling he might not live till evening. His questioner
objected that “everyone” knows that. “Everyone knows it,” the Sufi agreed, “but not everyone feels it.”
There’s a difference between knowing something and feeling it so much that
it changes our lives. The people of Nineveh “knew” all along what God wanted. But it took a Jonah to wake
them up, make them feel what that meant, so that they would reform their actions—not “next year,” not
“after the kids are grown,” not “later”—but now!
In the Gospel we see those first disciples immediately leave boats and nets, even families, to follow
Jesus. They not only knew, but they felt, that time was short. The time to act, always, is now.
“THIS IS THE TIME OF FULFILLMENT”
It’s not only that a truck might leap the curb, careen down the sidewalk, and sweep us away. That’s
possible. But it’s also possible that we walk life’s sidewalk, day after day, living as though we are not
living, putting our lives off until later. God has placed dreams in our hearts, but we might not get to them.
We put them off.
Maybe there’s an attitude or a habit we’d like to put aside, knowing that we’d be better, happier, if
we did. Maybe there’s a group we’d like to help, a person we’d like to get closer to, a child whose growing
up we would like to share. But we’d have to do something, not merely plan to do it someday.
There is no tomorrow, you know. There really isn’t. There’s only today, this moment. Time is short.
God is not later . . . in the sky . . . if we’re good girls and boys. “This is the time of fulfillment! The
kingdom of God is at hand! Repent and believe in the gospel!” (Mark 1:14).
