alentine’s Day is just around the
corner and what better way to
celebrate the most romantic day of
the year than with a special Valentine’s Day
issue of In And Around Kleinburg. Love is in
the air, the stores, television and everywhere
else. Dazzling displays of roses, chocolates and
stuffed teddy bears are prevalent everywhere
you look and it’s easy to get swept away. But it’s
important to remember what the day is truly
about; not the material items and gifts, but the
time and affection you can give others.
Kleinberg is a family oriented community
and there are many couples, young families
and established families that take advantage
of everything the town has to offer. This
is especially true in the days leading up to
Valentine’s Day. That’s why this February
issue of In And Around Kleinberg will help
you in planning that special day for you and
your significant other, parent, friend or loved
one. Valentine’s Day is about sharing your
affections and yourself, so even if you’re too
busy and life is hectic, or you can’t book that
restaurant you planned on going to, you’ll find
plenty of options that will help you create the
perfect day. Whether you’re looking to up your
romantic game or just get into a more loving
spirit, we’re here to help you.
Looking for inspiration on what you and your
significant other should aspire to be like, at
least romantically? Read Television’s Most
Popular Romantic Couples featuring everyone’s
favourites: Homer & Marge Simpson, Lucille

the feature to find out.

check out Kleinburg’s own NuAge Med Spa and
spoil your better half with body treatments,
laser treatments and much more. Add in a gift
from Caché Fine Jewellery & Giftware to mark
the special occasion and give your lover (friend,
family member, or even yourself) something to
remember the occasion by forever.
Don’t forget to set the ambiance on the big
day! Whether you’re driving to a restaurant,
cooking a special dinner at home or relaxing
by the fireplace by yourself, check out The
Most Romantic Songs Playlist to help you get
into the mood, set the vibe and establish the

ear Community & Friends of Kleinburg,
I hope you’re doing well. February is one of the
coldest months of the year but also the warmest
because of that special day on the 14th. That’s right,
it’s Valentine’s Day.
Although purchasing gifts for your significant others
is a beautiful gesture, let’s not forget to show some
love towards the other important people in your life:
family, friends and loved ones. Flowers and toys are
great, but there is one simple thing you can give to
others that is inexpensive and plentiful; your time.
Spend some quality time with your family, elders or
even volunteer for the day at a seniors home. Who
knows what you can learn by spending time with
people that want nothing more than someone to talk
to or read with.
I hope you have a great and joyful February.
With warm regards,
Jerry Celenza

FIND THE RIGHT WAY TO
SELL YOUR STUFF ONLINE
While garage sales are an ideal way
to get rid of the stuff you don’t
want anymore, the i nternet may be
the best place to sell valuable items
that you want to get rid of for top
dollar. Here are a few sites to help
you get started.
Craigslist and Kijiji allow you to
post descriptions of your items for
free. These sites are ideal for selling
furniture or other large items that
you want to get rid of quickly.
eBay Inc. is the ideal platform to
sell rare or collectible items or
other items with a niche market.
Interested buyers bid on your items
or can purchase them outright if
you choose. eBay Inc. charges a fee
to sell your items.
Amazon is ideal for selling books,
media, clothing, jewelry, etc. for
more than you’d probably get at a
yard sale. Amazon charges 99 cents
per item sold, but offers unlimited
sales for $39.99/month for sellers
who plan to sell more than 40
items per month.
3 Tips for an
Online sale
Price it right.
Before you post your item online, check out other
sites to see what similar items are selling for. This
will give you an accurate assessment of your price
point and prevent you from overpricing it.
Take great photos.
Pictures are essential since the potential buyers
won’t be able to check out the item in person.
Take photos of the item at each angle and include
detailed shots, if appropriate.
Give yourself time to sell it.
While some items are snatched up right away,
others may take time. Take as long as you need in
order to get the price you want.

Home Inspection Tips: Professional Corporation
brought to you by Morty Shaipro
T
horoughly inspecting your potential new home will prevent future disasters from occurring, as well
as unexpected costs, headaches and stress. But before bringing in, and paying for, a reputable home
inspector, knowing what to look for in your potential property can save you valuable time and money, in
addition to teaching you a valuable skill, which can be shared with friends and family.
Here are some pros and cons of personal home inspection tips before deciding whether the property
is for you and before bringing in a professional.
Here are 5 home Inspection Tips
1. Checking the roof for damage: Take a moment
and fully inspect the roof for signs of wear and tear.
Damaged, curled or broken shingles with faded
colors usually identify damage; as does having
granules that have been worn off. Take a ladder, and
get someone to spot you (remember safety first)
and check the roof for damage.
2. Windows: Newer windows utilize technology
that limits heat loss from within the dwelling, while
also preventing cold air from coming in. Windows
can save you, or cost you, more in terms of your
monthly hydro bill. Additionally, careful observation
of the lining in between the panes of glass can
reveal when the windows were manufactured, as a
date can be printed. If you notice problems such as
rotting, chipped or water-stained window frames,
this is a clear indicator that your windows will have
to be replaced, sooner than later.
3. Furnace and Air Conditioner: Ensuring that your
air conditioner and furnace are in good or prime
working conditioning is very important, as these
two can cost the most, in terms of repairs and, if
you’re unlucky, replacement. No one wants their air
conditioner to break down during the summer or be
left cold in a home during the dead of the winter.
4. The Walk Thru: After thoroughly inspecting the
interior of your potential purchase, make the time
to inspect the outside of the house. Inspecting
every nook, cranny and crack is difficult, but if
there are noticeable cracks in the foundation, a
red flag should be raised. Cracks usually indicate
the weakest areas of a home’s foundation; when
spotted, ensure you check inside the house to see if
the area with the cracks have water entry, or worse,
water damage. Additionally, if the grading of the
home is not directed away from the foundation,
another red flag should be raised.
5. Utilize Tools Available Online: On the internet,
you can find the tools that can help you thoroughly
inspect your potential purchase. If you’re worried
that you’ll miss something as you might get
giddy about your potential dream home, refer to
the Total Home Inspection Checklist provided by
TotalHomeInspection.com. This checklist will ensure
that you won’t miss anything.

racking up interest on your credit cards.
Many Canadians suffer with their highest debt
load in the month of January. Save thousands of
dollars in interest by creating a pay down plan!
Consolidate and restructure your debt into your
mortgage so you are paying less interest and
paying off debt sooner. Start the New Year on the
right foot by saving money and taking advantage
of historically low mortgage interest rates.
Look at what you’re paying on your credit cards
and other debts. If you roll those high interest
debts into a new or existing mortgage, your
potential saving can be significant!

SHRIMP
AND PASTA
What You Need To Do:
Boil a large pot of salted water then cook pasta in boiling
water for 6 to 8 minutes or until al dente; drain.
Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large frying pan. Cook
and stir mushrooms in oil until tender. Remove mushrooms
from pan, and set aside.
Combine shrimp, champagne, and salt in the frying pan, and
cook over high heat. When liquid just begins to boil, remove
shrimp from pan. Add shallots and tomatoes to champagne;
boil until liquid is reduced to 1/2 cup, about 8 minutes.
Stir in 3/4 cup cream; boil until slightly thick, about 1 to 2
minutes. Add shrimp and mushrooms to sauce, and heat
through. Adjust seasonings to taste.
Toss hot, cooked pasta with remaining 1/4 cup cream
and parsley.
To serve, spoon shrimp with sauce over pasta, and top
with Parmesan cheese.

1tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1cup sliced fresh mushrooms
1pound medium shrimp,
peeled & deveined

2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 tbsp milk
2 eggs
2 tsp honey
1 pinch salt
2 tbsp butter, divided
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese,
softened
½ cup confectioners’ sugar
What You Need To Do:
Whisk together the flour, milk eggs, honey and salt in a bowl
until the batter is smooth.
Melt 1tbsp of butter in a nonstick crepe pan over medium heat
until the foam disappears.
Pour about 2 tbsp of the batter into the pan, and swirl to cover
the bottom of the pan with a thin layer of batter.
Cook until the crepe for about 1 minute or until the crepe is no
longer runny; flip and cook the other side for an additional
1 minute. Repeat with additional butter and crepe mix to make
additional crepes. Set the crepes aside on paper towels.
In a bowl, mix the cream cheese with 1/2 cup confectioner’s
sugar to make a creamy spread. Very gently stir in the berries.
Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the crepes and
roll up.

LOOKING FOR SOME GREAT DATE NIGHT IDEAS FOR THIS VALENTINE’S DAY?
WELL, LOOK NO FURTHER! HERE ARE SOME GREAT AND UNIQUE IDEAS THAT
YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR PARTNER. REMEMBER, VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE.
TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND GETTING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
CAN IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP AND CREATE LONG LASTING MEMORIES.
14
1
VALENTINE’S DAY
YOGA OR COUPLES YOGA
Yoga and couples yoga is known to bring people together as it helps form a physically stronger, and sometimes more
spiritual bond between the participants. As couples work with each other to create different poses, an emphasis on touch
and trust is placed. Toronto yoga teacher David Robson, owner of Catfish Yoga Shala, teaches couples yoga and states
“Resistance (to learning) melts quickly away when they [couples] learn they don’t have to chant.”
2
ROCK CLIMBING
3
CUISINE
4
Participating in rock climbing helps inject some adrenaline into a couples night out, especially on Valentine’s Day. Why sit
and eat dinner again (like you did last year) when you can be taking up a vertical challenge? Also, fans of the film Cliffhanger
will love it as you can embrace your inner Sylvester Stallone. Meagan Alkemade of Toronto’s Joe Rockhead’s Indoor Rock
Climbing explains that it is a two-person operation: “You have to work together to climb successfully.” Each couple becomes
dependent on their partner, bringing them closer together. Another less common benefit; couples that rock climb together
get through the rockiest parts of their relationship. You can also try Of Rock & Chalk, located in Newmarket”
If you’re a fan of the tried and true, or want a simpler night out with a twist, try venturing to a new exotic restaurant. living
in Canada, there is plenty of access to a variety of ethnic and diverse restaurants. Fan of Italian? Try a Moroccan restaurant
like The Sultan’s Tent & Café Moroc. Fan of Mexican? Why not try one of the many Greek restaurants on the Danforth? or how
about Grill 4 U in Vaughan? Craving something sweet? Try Kleinburg’s own Cookie Crumble Café because that’s the way the
cookie crumbles.
GET CREATIVE
Sometimes in life, you barely have the time to do the things you want to. Maybe the times are tough financially. That
doesn’t mean your options are limited or that you can’t have a great time; it simply means that it’s time to get creative. Why
not schedule uninterrupted time for your significant other and turn off your cell phones so no one or thing can interrupt?
Draw an inexpensive bath and give a massage; grab some scented candles from The Body Shop, throw in some bath salts
5
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
6
TAKE A WALK
7
It’s time to dust off your dancing shoes and take your partner out for a dance lesson. Try learning partner-centric dances,
such as the tango, salsa, bachata or even the merengue. Dancing is one of the most expressive and romantic activities
couples can do. Don’t believe me? Ask your wife. or perhaps you’ve watched Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night Fever or Magic
Mike? Case closed.
Sure, it might be a little cold but sometimes the smallest gestures in life can create the grandest memories. Plan a walk
through a park, but before going with your significant other, place a bottle of wine and glasses (or styrofoam cups) along
the route you plan on taking in order to surprise her with something she would have never expected. You might be
thinking that a plain old walk won’t be memorable, but trust me, it will be; there is even a movie titled A Walk to Remember.
THE TRIED & TRUE
Plan a day or spend the night in the most romantic place Ontario has to offer; Niagara Falls. From the beautiful views of the
falls at ground level, or looking over it through your hotel bedroom, visiting the falls is a classic move that no one can resist.
Just don’t forget the flowers.

While viewing the store, I noticed something truly
unusual and unique to Giovanna and her store;
a completely chocolate high heel shoe, made instore and handcrafted by Giovanna herself. Don’t
worry, she doesn’t use her actual foot during
the making of it. These chocolate high heels are
made from high quality chocolate, with extra
care given so that not only is it delicious, but so
that the finished product looks like a piece of art.
I saw it, and I can say it definitely does. These
unique items are often purchased as birthday
gifts or wedding as they are equally delicious and
aesthetically pleasing.
The inspiration for Bonbons & Brittle is also unique.
Giovanna has always had a love for sweets
and candies, so one day while driving through
Kleinburg she felt like the town was missing
something. By putting her creativity and passion
into this project, Bonbons & Brittle was born, filling
a sweet void that she felt her community was
missing. A former stay-at-home mom, Giovanna’s
passion and hard work shines through every
aspect of the store. From the store-front counters
to the old fashioned cash register, the ambiance
feels warm and friendly.
The store is constantly expanding too, always
offering a new variety of items and treats; the
most recent additions are specialty blooming
teas. These specialty teas were introduced in
store 2 years ago, with new and different flavours
being added regularly. I tried the Bella Coola tea,
a herbal tea with fruit that is also caffeine free; it
has apple pieces, natural dried orange, hibiscus
and natural flavors. There are also types of tea
boosted with vitamin C for children that are fussy
eaters. You can even make popsicles out of them
or by summer time or even ask to drink it cold on
the storefront patio in the summer.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth or a hankering
for something delicious, be sure to
drop by Bonbons & Brittle and say hi to
Giovanna. Try some of the goodies she
offers and fight the impulse of eating
everything in the store because I barely
did. Everything looks, and smells too
delicious.
Gi Ideas
Here are some gift ideas Giovanna
suggests, whether it’s for Valentine’s Day,
a birthday party or just a small gift for
a friend, Bonbons & Brittles has got you
covered like chocolate on caramel pecans.
If you’re in need for a Valentine’s Day gift,
you can find many options at Bonbons &
Brittles. If you’re in need of ideas, ask for
Giovanna’s help as she is incredibly kind
and an expert in all things sweet. She might
suggest the handmade truffles, chocolate
covered popcorn or my favourite, the
chocolate high heel. You can’t go wrong
with these choices.
For The Kids
Any candy and chocolate shop is heaven
for kids and Bonbons & Brittles is no
different, except for being a little better.
Kids can go crazy at the Willy Wonka section
or the Jelly Belly buffet section. There are
also a variety of chocolate bars, gummy
bears, bonbons, chocolate covered caramel
pecans, fudge and much more.
Healthier Alternatives
Even the liquorish and other items have
fewer, if any, preservatives and junk in
them. “When people want to indulge
themselves, we give them the opportunity
to do so with their favourite treats, but
ours has less of the bad ingredients in
them, as we try to get natural products and
products with fewer preservatives within
them.” Gluten free products are offered
as well, in addition to a nut free section to
accommodative people with allergies.

DENTAL CAREforTIPS
Your Pet

A
n astounding 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show
signs of oral disease by age three, according to the
American Veterinary Dental Society. As February
is Pet Dental Month, this is a great time to do something
about it.
Just like in your own mouth, regular dental care
from a young age can help keep your pet’s breath fresh,
teeth clean and reduce, eliminate or even prevent gum
disease. It can also save you a lot on vet bills. Brushing
your pet’s teeth on a daily basis is the most effective, and
preventative, treatment that you can provide. But for
pets, or pet parents, who aren’t receptive to this, there are
other options that can help. Especially when a canine is
giving you a ruff time!
WHEN ORAL HYGIENE GOES BAD
PLAQUE
Plaque is the first stage of dental problems. It’s like a
thin, sticky coating being put over the teeth. It takes as
little as a day for plaque to start to form and within three
to four days, there is a noticeable layer on the teeth.
The good thing about plaque is that it’s fairly soft
and usually easy to remove with a little scrubbing.
Unfortunately, the presence of sticky plaque allows more
bacteria to adhere to the teeth.
TARTER
The next step in dental disease is the formation of tartar,
sometimes called calculus. The harmful bacteria in the
plaque on the teeth form very hard deposits on the teeth
using minerals – mostly calcium. This tartar is difficult to
remove and its presence on the teeth leads to more and
more build-up. Worse than the unsightly look of black
tartar on the teeth, the bacteria forming the tartar produce
many nasty toxins.
18
GINGIVITIS
These toxins eat away at the gums causing them to get
red and bleed; This is called gingivitis. If left untreated, the
gums can recede to the point that the teeth will fall out.
The toxins produced can also attack other organs in the
body – most notably the heart – by travelling through the
blood. Another noticeable side effect of the toxins is their
smell, which causes bad breath.
FIXING THE PROBLEM
BRUSH & SCRAPE
The most effective way to remove plaque is physical
brushing and/or abrasion. This needs to be done frequently
enough to prevent the formation of tartar. Once tartar
begins to form, brushing alone is not going to remove it
all. Ideally, a pet’s teeth should be brushed at least every
other day.
WEAKEN THE STRUCTURE
The structure of tartar can be weakened if the calcium is
replaced by another mineral, such as phosphorus. Basically,
the phosphorus replaces calcium in the structure of the
tartar, causing the tartar to weaken and crumble.
Ingredients such as hexametaphosphate and sodium
tripolyphosphate are used in pet foods and treats to help
reduce tartar build up.
ELIMINATE THE SOURCE
Another solution is to eliminate bacteria from the mouth,
preventing the whole process of plaque and tartar buildup from starting. Most dental aids designed for pets rely
on eliminating bacteria by using an ingredient that has
antimicrobial activity. Mouth washes, rinses and sprays
usually have an antimicrobial ingredient.
SOLUTIONS
TEETH-BRUSHING
One of the best ways to keep your pet’s mouth clean
and healthy is by brushing their teeth each day. With
toothpastes in a variety of dog-friendly flavors, and
toothbrushes (from extra-soft traditional-styles to finger
brushes), our pet dental kits have what you need to
get started. Never use human toothpaste for pets, as it
contains chemicals that can make them sick.
PASTES, GELS AND WATER ADDITIVES
These time-saving dental products work wonders when
it comes to cleaning your pet’s teeth. They are very easy
to apply directly to your pets teeth; alternatively, you can
simply add it to their water. Either way, they’re effective.
DENTAL TREATS
Reward your pet’s good behavior with a treat that also
improves oral health! From bite-sized, to edible bones in
all shapes and sizes, these treats can contribute to reduced
tartar buildup, provide fresher breath and healthy gums.
KIBBLE OR STEW?
Dogs and cats that are fed a soft food diet (rather than
kibble) often suffer from greater tartar build-up. This is
because kibble scrapes the teeth – but dry kibble alone
is not enough to maintain good oral health for most cats
and dogs.
TOYS
Many toys provide dental benefits plus fun. From rope
toys to specialized cat toys, benefits range from cleaning
and massaging gums to flossing and removing tartar.

THE MOST
ROMANTIC
20
TV COUPLES
OF ALL TIME
I Love Lucy – Ricky Ricardo & Lucille Ball
Starring Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, I Love Lucy is widely
acknowledged as one of the greatest sitcoms of all times.
Ball & Arnaz play Lucy & Ricky, the wacky couple that everybody can’t
get enough of. Lucy constantly tests Ricky’s patience (while also trying
to steal the spotlight from her husband) all while getting into some
bizarre situations. Audiences everywhere couldn’t get enough Lucy’s
antics or Ricky’s excitable personality. People today still quote the show,
stating “You got some splaining to do!”
The Simpsons –
Homer & Marge
The longest-running American
sitcom and the longest-running
American animated program,
The Simpsons is the prototype
that other shows have emulated;
the typical American family.
Whether it was Family Guy, King
of Queens, According to Jim,
newer shows have paid homage
to the Simpsons. Imitation is the
sincerest form of flattery, and
many other shows have tried to
capture the chemistry of Homer
and Marge, to some success.
Regardless of Homer’s childlike
personality or Marge’s constant
nagging, this couple is arguably
the most popular and most liked
couple on television.
King of Queens – Doug & Carrie
Doug (Kevin James) and Carrie Heffernan
(Leah Remini) are a working class married
couple living in Queens, New York.
The show follows Doug’s
misadventures, which are
often a result of food,
schemes, quirks and on
occasion, Carrie’s father (Jerry
Stiller). Although Carrie is
sometimes aggressive
and demanding of Doug,
his lovable attitude
and charisma make
Doug and Carrie one
of the best pop culture
couples of all time.
Friends – Ross & Rachel
The late 1990s to early 2000s classic, everyone
you know and their children have watched Friends.
The spiritual predecessor of How I Met Your Mother,
Friends revolved around a small circle of friends
navigating through their lives in New York. Ross
(David Schwimmer) falls in love with Rachel (Jennifer
Aniston), a friend he has known for years, but struggles
to tell her how he feels. Most men can relate to their
story, that of entering the Friends zone (pun intended).
Luckily, Ross musters the strength to reveal his feelings
to her, feelings he has been harboring since high school,
and that is how one of the greatest
television love stories is born.
I Dream of Jeannie –
Major Nelson & Jeannie
Staring Larry Hagman as astronaut
Major Nelson and Barbara Eden
as the eponymous 2000 year old
character, I Dream of Jeannie follows
the lives of the two characters after
Jeannie falls in love with Major
Nelson upon their first encounter.
A fantastical take on the traditionalist
love story, I Dream of Jeannie appeals
to both the young and old.
Saved By the Bell – Zach & Kelly
“It’s alright ‘cause I’m saved by the bell!” Everyone knows the
opening theme song to Saved by the Bell, the show that followed
a group of high school friends and their principal. Zach Morris, the
charming schemer, falls for Kelly Kapowski, the quintessential
high school cheerleader. Although this couple experiences
trials and tribulations, breakups and heartbreaks, Zach & Kelly’s
relationship was the ideal relationship every teen desired.

The Perfect Valentine’s Day Playlist
Written By Bobby Roshdi
Everyone knows what the most important day of the most
important month is; that’s right, it’s Valentine’s Day.
C
ouples love it. Married people enjoy
it. Single people despise it (Ok, maybe
that’s just me). What better way to
get into the Valentine’s Day spirit
than creating the BEST Valentine’s Day playlist.
Whether you’re planning a special homemade
dinner, driving off to a restaurant or just trying
to remember what love is, this playlist will play
with heartstrings like Keith Richards plays the
guitar. Here are the 5 most romantic songs for
your Valentine’s Day.
22
For this list, I’ve factored in a tear count.
1 Tear is “Not Very Romantic” and
5 Tears is “Super Romantic.”
1
“I Just Called To Say I Love You” – Stevie Wonder
Written, produced and performed by Stevie Wonder,
this song won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for
Best Original Song in 1984. It’s the perfect way to start off
your Valentine’s Day activities. Haven’t you ever called
someone just to tell them you love them? Playing this song
to your significant other will remind them that even when
life gets a little too hectic and busy, you’ll always have the
time to call and say those magic words.
Tear Count: 5/5 Tears
5
“Layla” – Eric Clapton
“Layla” was written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon
(Editor’s note: not the Gotham City detective) and was
inspired by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi’s work The
Story of Layla and Majnun. The story is about a man who
falls hopelessly in love at a young age with a beautiful
woman, but is unable to marry her because of her father’s
wishes. This results in Majnun (translated as “possessed”)
becoming crazy. The poem had a profound effect on
Clapton who could relate to the poem, as he had an
unrequited love for George Harrison’s wife.
Tear Count: 3/5 Tears
2
“My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme From Titanic)”
– Celine Dion
The theme song from Titanic, the second highest grossing
film of all time and Celine Dion’s undisputed most
popular song. Whenever you hear this song, it’s hard not
to think of Jack & Rose’s tragic romance, especially the
iconic scene where Jack holds Rose at the front of the ship.
Tear Count: 6/5 Tears (Editor’s note: Not a typo)
+
3
“I Want To Dance With Somebody
(Who Loves Me)” – Whitney Houston
Released in 1987 by Whitney Houston, this song is a
masterpiece of the 1980’s and a reminder of the vocal
powerhouse that Whitney Houston was before her
untimely death. The song is about dancing, not just with
anyone, but “somebody that loves me.” You know the
expression “It takes two to tango.” Well, it takes two for
just about any other kind of dance and there is nothing
sweeter than dancing with a loved one (even if you have
two left feet).
Tear Count: 2/5 Tears
6
Editors Pick
“Just Hold On We’re Going Home” – Drake
This song was inspired by Drake and his production
team was inspired to create “a record that was played at
weddings in 10 years or that people that are away from
their families in the army could listen to.” The song is
about how, regardless of what obstacles arise, the power of
love can help you get to wherever you need to go. Whether
it’s into the arms of your love or traversing a desert, it’s the
motivation that gets you going.
Tear Count: 3/5 Tears
Well there you have it, 6 songs that are bound
to get you into the Valentine’s Day spirit this
year and help you express your inner romantic.
Whether you’re taking a romantic walk down
memory lane, or envisioning a romantic future
with your significant other, these songs are
great additions to your Valentine’s Day playlist.
4
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” – Queen
Written by Freddy Mercury, this song is about that
feeling we can’t understand sometimes. That feeling that
made John Cusack hold a stereo above his head. That
feeling that makes you order 4 dozen roses. That feeling
that can make working as a couple on a pottery wheel
sexy. Yes, it’s a “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.
Tear Count: 3/5 Tears

V
aughan in Motion President, Peter Badali is
a busy man. That is to be expected when
he’s out and about, organizing one of the
community’s largest fundraising events for cancer
research and equipment. We caught up with
Mr. Badali to discuss his role as a co-founder of
Vaughn in Motion and learned about the annual
Gala to Cure Cancer event happening this month.
24
1.
What made you decide to start
Vaughan in Motion?
In 1997 Dr. Greg D’orio and I were
sitting in our monthly Knights of
Columbus meeting. An announcement
was made that a fellow brother-knight
had just been diagnosed with cancer.
He was a young man with a young
family; his chemo treatments were to
start the following week.
While performing special prayers
for our brother-knight, a directive from
The Central Knight office came asking
each chapter to stage a walk for cancer.
I happened to be sitting beside Greg
that evening and upon hearing this
announcement, we both turned to
each other and asked each other if we
wanted to do it. We both had lost our
fathers to cancer; Greg’s to leukaemia
and mine to liver cancer. We both
wanted to do something to honour
them. Almost immediately, we agreed
to be the leaders of this initiative.
I was a catholic school trustee at
that time so getting the cooperation
of the Maple area schools and the
principals was an achievable task. Greg
was, and still is, an optometrist with
thousands of patients that have always
given their support. Along with fellow
brother-knights John Iorio and leonard
Dynand, the original committee was
formed. The objectives were set and
the first walk happened that year in
1997, raising $8000.
2.
What is the organization about?
Vaughan in Motion to Cure Cancer is
a 100% volunteer-staffed, not-for-profit
organization dedicated to supporting
all cancer patients and their families
who live in our community. We help by
raising vital funds for equipment and
programs aimed at prevention and
treatment of all cancers.
3.
How has it grown throughout
the years?
The first walk took place in 1997 in
which over $8,000 was raised. over
the years, we’ve added a couple events
to raise further funds and awareness:
the Hollywood Gala To Cure Cancer was
added in 2001 and Golf To Cure Cancer
in 2005.
Throughout the years the
organization has been blessed with
many volunteers who give thousands
of hours every year to this great cause.
It takes energy, enthusiasm and an
endless supply of good people who give
their time and support every day to this
great cause.
4.
Where can others go if they want
to learn more or get involved
with the organization?
Please visit www.vaughaninmotion.
com. You can find all the information
you need on the website. You can also
call 905-832-8298 or email us at info@

6.
What are some of the events
that Vaughan in Motion hosts
annually?
Vaughn in Motion holds 3 events each
year. Hollywood Gala to Cure Cancer
(February 7th, 2015) takes place at
the Terrace Banquet Center. This gala
consists of an evening filled with dinner,
followed by a great party. We will also
be honouring cancer survivors while
paying tribute to our sponsors.
Walk to Cure Cancer (April 26th,
2015) is the event that started it all.
Friends, family and supporters gather
to walk 5 km inside Vaughn Mills mall.
Afterwards, we turn the food court
into a local entertainment centre with
DooDoo the Clown, a reptilian show,
in addition to local singers and young
dancers performing.
Golf to Cure Cancer (Thursday, June
11, 2015) is the newest addition to
our list of events. Golf to Cure Cancer
consists of lunch and dinner with
snacks and refreshments. What better
way to support people in need. The
event will take place at the RedCrest
Cardinal Golf Course.
GALA TO CURE CANCER
1.
Tell me about the event?
The event takes place on
September February 7th with the red
carpet rolling out at 6pm.
This is an evening where we honour
cancer survivors and pay tribute to our
sponsors while having a great party;
this year it is a “Hollywood Party.” Come
dressed up as your favourite movie or
television character and have a chance
to win one of the Vaughan in Motion
OsCures. or just come dressed in your
gala wear and cheer on your favourite
“Best Dressed Up” nominees”. We will
have dinner, dance and party all night.
It’s all for a great cause while having
lots of fun!
Tickets are available online at our
website. You can purchase tickets
online at www.vaughinmotion.com.
Tickets are $125 per person or $150
after January 23rd. You can also email
us at
[email protected] or call
905-832-8298.
2.
How much was raised in
previous years? What is the goal
this year?
over $1,000,000 was raised for cancer
care programs and equipment since
1997. The goal for this year is to help
the people in need. We just donated
$50,000 from our 2014 events. The
funds raised through Vaughan in Motion
helps cancer patients in our community
both today and tomorrow.
3.
Where exactly will the funds
raised go toward?
over the years the money raised has
gone towards several various groups,
organizations and health care facilities:
• Over $650,000 was donated to the
Canadian Cancer Society
• $225,000 is being held in trust by the
VHCF to be spent strictly on cancer care
• $25,000 was donated in 2012 to the
Mackenzie Health Foundation for the
MRI unit
• $50,000 was donated in 2013 to
provide new equipment for the
Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital
chemotherapy Unit, and to provide
funds for the new Mackenzie Vaughan
Hospital specifically for cancer care
• $50, 000 was donated in 2014 to the
Mackenzie Health Foundation strictly for
cancer care equipment at the Mackenzie
Richmond Hill Hospital chemotherapy
unit and at the new Mackenzie Vaughan
Hospital

Caché Fine Jewellery & Giftware
WRITTEN By Noel Matta
“IT’S SO NICE OF YOU to do that!”
T
hese were the first words I heard upon
stepping into Cache Fine Jewellery & Giftware
on the corner of Islington Avenue and
Stegman’s Mill Road. Lawrence Tollamn,
owner of Cache, later explained to me that a satisfied
customer had been expressing her gratitude
about a custom piece that he had crafted for her.
The woman had initially approached Lawrence with
a silver bangle she owned to recreate it in gold. As
she returned to pick up her order, she was pleasantly
surprised to find that her original silver piece
would be returned to her; she first thought that the
friendly price of the invoice only included the gold.
This level of service is what you can expect from
Cache as Lawrence has been dedicated to fulfilling his
clientele’s needs since opening in 2012. Replacing the
beloved Olde Teddy Bear Shoppe, Cache had big shoes
to fill in the community so Lawrence knew his vast
years of experience in the jewellery trade would not
be enough to win over the hearts of Kleinburg Village.
While their wide range of brands (Zoppini,
Toywatch, Crislu, Miss Mimi, etc.) make Cache a
premier jewellery retailer in Kleinburg, their clients
26
appreciate and trust them most for their service.
In fact, Lawrence has been known to direct his
customers to nearby competitors on the very rare
occasions he has not had what they were looking for.
Even though Cache is located in Kleinburg, its
reputation is known throughout the GTA. Lawrence
can rely on visits from regulars from areas such
as Scarborough, Barrie, Orillia, Nobleton, Toronto
and Bolton, to name a few. He believes his
customers enjoy shopping at Cache for its relaxed
atmosphere – the casual and friendly vibe is
unlike what people expect from a quality jeweller.
As someone whose family has been involved
in the jewellery trade since his birth, Lawrence
Tollamn is intimately familiar with every level of the
industry. His background enables him to provide
the best advice with engagement/wedding rings,
customization jobs and appraisals – but Cache’s true
specialty is carrying GIA certified loose diamonds.
This February is a great time to visit Cache. Whether
you are looking for that perfect date night accessory
or for a gift for that special someone, Cache is the
perfect fit for every occasion.
