Happy winter everyone; it seems like ‘Old Man Winter’ doesn’t know for sure what season it wants to have, or
if we are just going through a regular mid-winter warm-up. With all the different weather concerns from blowing snow, well below-zero wind-chill numbers, ice and even rainbows, we have managed to get some school in
over the month of January. So, the second semester is under way, schedules have been adjusted for some, winter sports are going full speed ahead, new personnel has been hired, and everyone is getting back into the
swing of things.
As many of you know, Mrs. Tabetha Dawkins resigned her position as JK-8 Music/SPED Aide effective the
end of the first semester. Ms. Chelsea Kerbaugh was hired to fill her position following Christmas break. She
is making herself familiar with all the students while learning the ropes of the Warner School District. We welcome her to the school and wish her the best of luck as she gets started in education.
February also brings us closer to completion of the new gymnasium; floor work has been completed with lines
painted, logos touched up, and seal coats applied. The current projects are bleacher and sound system install,
with both being completed the first part of the month. Once those two additions are finalized, we only have a
couple of minor items to complete with everything coming together for a community ‘Open House’ February
12 during parent/teacher conferences.
As just mentioned, we will be hosting spring parent/teacher conferences Thursday, Feb 12th; we are extending
the total time for conferences to 1:00-8:30 with a lunch break from 5:00-5:30. Conferences normally run from
2:00-8:30 with a half hour lunch break; however, 6 hours of conference time doesn’t allow enough time to
schedule sessions for all students. By extending time an hour, we create enough time to complete all conferences on Thursday, thus avoiding the need to conference other days of the week. A schedule of elementary
conferences has been completed, and we are asking all parents to attend at your designated time, and keep in
mind Thursday will be the only day for scheduled elementary conferences.
The 2015 SD Legislative Session is currently underway and will continue to progress through February and
into the first half of March. As it has been over the last several years, the education groups continue to encourage SD government to contribute more dollars for education. We seem to be fighting the same uphill battle
year in and year out; unfortunately, that means more pressure on local tax payers to fund education. While districts continue to fall further behind other states in school funding, we are also facing a teacher shortage.
Please don’t be misled or easily swayed by the political rhetoric, educate yourself and get the entire picture on
the issues. Also, don’t be afraid to contact your local legislatures to get further information and share your
opinions. As someone encouraged me, “Be brief, be specific, and be gone!” I understand our school district is
represented by 3 different legislative districts, so if you are looking for contact information, all individuals can
be found at legis.sd.gov. Contact information can be found under the “Find My Legislator” tab. You can also
attend “Cracker Barrel” events to share concerns with legislators; many are scheduled throughout the different
districts.

Hello Parents and Guardians,
We have many awesome things to talk about this month. In January, we kicked off our new teacher evaluation
system. Our new system has been adopted by the state and is meant to create many positive conversations
about what happens in class. Like any new system, it can be intimidating. Fortunately, the teachers have been
great about embracing a system that hopefully assists even the very best teachers to continually improve their
lessons. I am lucky I get to implement this system on an already very strong group of teachers.
Conferences will be rolling around again on February 12th. It’s great to see so many parents attending to keep
in touch with their child’s academic progress. If you ever feel the need to visit with your child’s teacher,
please do not feel you have to wait for conferences. It is best for the student if we communicate regularly, especially if there is a problem. There will be no school on February 13th and the 16th.
The elementary will be busy with Jump Rope for Heart during PE. Fourth and eighth grade will have the
NAEP test on February 5th. Third grade will have their President’s Day celebration on the 18th of February.
I’m sure I’m probably missing some events so consult your child’s backpack if in doubt.
The middle school and high school have many events going on also. The middle school has been successful in
Math Counts. The high school one-act play has kept Ms. Herrboldt and her students busy, and the three– act
play is coming! Mrs. Schwan, band, and chorus students never rest with high school small group contests in
February and playing at all the games. Speaking of games, don’t forget our sports!!! Basketball, wrestling,
cheerleading, and gymnastics keep our schedules full!
The seniors have had a special opportunity this year to participate in the dual enrollment classes. Dual enrollment classes allow students to take one class and have it count towards high school graduation and a college
degree at a reduced price. Many of our students are taking advantage of the courses. I expect next year to
have even more students participate because it is such a great opportunity.

The Warner cheerleaders will be putting on a cheer clinic for grades K-6, February 14th from 9:30 AM to
about noon. On February 13th, after the girls basketball game, the cheerleaders will be holding a sleepover in
the library/gym. Breakfast will be served Saturday morning. The girls will perform at half time of the girls
basketball game versus Summit at the Civic Arena on the 14th. The cost for both the sleepover and the clinic
is $20 dollars, and $10 dollars for girls that just want to come to the clinic. Fun and games Friday evening!
Hello from Warner PTCO! What a great year it has been so far! We would like to send a huge "Thank You"
to all of you who have volunteered to help with the double header meal, pop shot, and other events throughout
the year. We've had a lot of fun and couldn't do it without the help of all who have pitched in. Please keep an
eye out for Herberger's coupons in February. The PTCO receives all proceeds from your donations and will
use them to help purchase playground equipment for the elementary students, provide scholarships, and provide a meal for the teachers during parent-teacher conferences. You can find us on Facebook to keep up on
events throughout the year. Also, please be on the lookout for outstanding volunteers in our community, as
we will be taking nominations for Volunteer of the Year in April. Thanks again for your generosity!

Mother's Club Happenings
Come hungry to the February 3 double header with Faulkton! Warner Mother's Club will be serving their near
famous hot ham and cheese sandwich meal. When you support Mother's Club, you are helping this organization of area women to raise money for scholarships for Warner seniors.
Can't make it to the game? Mother's Club will also be hosting their 2nd Annual Community Fun Night in late
February/early March. Come down to the Community Center for a spaghetti supper and bingo with prizes. More information will be announced soon!
Four scholarships were awarded to the Warner class of 2014 . This would not have been possible without the
terrific support of the school and community. Thank you!
The Warner School and Community Library held their Winter Carnival on January 15th for all the children
who read 100 minutes during their Christmas break. We had about 90 children who read at least 100 minutes
and some who read 900 minutes during the break. These children made crafts, had hot cocoa, decorated cookies, picked a free book, and had a chance at some grand prizes. This event was sponsored by a grant from
Thrivent Lutheran.
On January 27th, the Library Committee served a meal at the Warner vs Hitchcock-Tulare game. We thank
all of those who furnished bars and helped support this fundraiser.
Our upcoming event will be some fun activities for Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. Please watch for information on that event to come.
We will not be holding a spring book fair this year. The book fair will be held next year in October. Please
be sure to stop by the library and look at the new arrivals. We are receiving new books every month.

Greetings! My name is Chelsea Kerbaugh, and I am the new K-6 elementary music and choir director at
Warner Public School. I am very excited to get to know your child and begin sharing the gift of music with
them.
Recently, I graduated on December 13, 2014 from Northern State University with my degree in K-12 Instrumental & Vocal Music Education. During my time at NSU, I was active in many instrumental and choral musical ensembles, and I held leadership roles in music organizations. I am well-versed in many aspects of music. I have had extensive experience working with all ages of children and their abilities. Apart from music
and teaching, I love to exercise, read, travel, and spend time with my family and friends.
Music and teaching are my two passions in life. I believe music has the power to bring people together from
all different backgrounds. Music is very important to a child’s education and is a crucial aspect to many other
school subjects. I enjoy working with all ages of children and believe every child has the ability to learn music.
