PROCEDURES FOR CONFERENCES A number of similar schools have decided to limit the number of teachers that each parent may see. Although we have not decided to take this course of action, we ask that you keep the following in mind: • Please understand that it may not be possible to see all of your child’s teachers; instead we suggest you choose three or four teachers to visit. Students will be given a copy of their mid-term interim progress reports (or have access using Jupiter Grades) during the week of October 6. You should ask your child to see these prior to parent-teacher conferences. We encourage you to study the interim reports and prioritize which teachers to visit. • Conferences will be limited in duration to three minutes. Please do not take umbrage if, after three minutes, the teacher concludes the conference. • In managing sign-in sheets, teachers will follow a “Rule of Three.” If, when it is your turn for a conference, you are not present at the teacher’s door, he or she will call the next parent on the list. After two further unsuccessful attempts to meet with you, your name will be crossed off. Please note that teachers will not place sign-up sheets outside their rooms until 5:30 PM (or 1:00 PM on Friday). • Please be kind to student volunteers and members of the faculty and staff. Some teachers will ask student volunteers to help manage the sign-in sheets. Please be kind to them! In the past, students and staff members have been driven to tears by parents who were frustrated at having to wait or at having their names crossed out. • We will try to place teachers in rooms based on the grade(s) that they teach. However, since nearly all of our teachers instruct more than one grade, it will likely still be necessary to visit some rooms at opposite ends of the building. • We encourage you to bring your child with you to the conferences. We believe that this communicates to students our expectation that they take responsibility for their academic performance and participate in discussions about how to improve their work. If, during the course of the conference, you or the teacher wishes to share something that is inappropriate for your child to hear, then he or she will be asked to step out of the classroom briefly. • If you are able, please make some time for a brief visit to your child’s counselor. Obviously, Ms. Suh and Ms. Wise will be unable to conduct a “complete” college or academic guidance session at the conferences. However, if there is the need to schedule a follow-up meeting in order to review your child’s overall progress, they will be glad to do so.
