ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
COMEDY TONIGHT
In The Cavalcade of Comedy, an anthology of 21 brilliant comedies from
Ben Jonson’s Volpone to Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, the editor Louis
Kronenberger writes in his introduction, “Especially in the theatre, comedy
stands forth a serious and valuable form; for, there, wit, sharpness,
pungency are not only fine initial virtues, they are also notable preservatives.” Mr. Kronenberger’s point is that comedy lasts over generations,
whereas most dramas do not have such a long shelf-life. One could argue
the point, but he refers to plays from the 18th century, where a comedy like Oliver Goldsmith’s
She Stoops to Conquer (1773) has received many productions over the last two and a half
centuries, compared to a drama like George Lillo’s The London Merchant (1721), a play that
I have never seen. Try to think of a drama from the late 19th century that can compete on
popularity with Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).
So, when I first heard that there was a new adaptation of the Carlo Goldoni comedy The
Servant of Two Masters, I was immediately intrigued. Goldoni’s comedy was written in 1753,
based on an earlier version from 1743, and featured a great deal of improvisation using stock
characters that were well known from the theatrical genre commedia dell’arte. The comedy
starred a lead Italian comic actor playing the role of Truffaldino, or the servant. Our
production features Andrew McNee in the servant role (the One Man). Andrew appeared in
last season’s The Odd Couple and received a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for his
performance in our 2013 production of Boeing-Boeing. David Mackay, the director, helmed
that production and has assembled an outstanding cast of actors who know how to handle
comedy that verges on farce as the plot careens from one improbable situation to another.
As Mr. Kronenberger wrote, “Comedy of situation, from being most farcical, can—when
acted—be the most spontaneously funny.”
Although his ‘cavalcade’ was published
before One Man, Two Guvnors was
produced, he could be referring to this
outstanding piece of the genre. So as the
saying goes, “sit back, relax, forget the cares
of the day, and enjoy.”

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
HELP US—TELL US HOW YOU FEEL
One of my favourite quotes about the role the arts plays in our lives used
to be printed right on our old paper $20 bill. It’s from the Canadian author
Gabrielle Roy, and it brilliantly surmises the arts’ importance to any
nation’s identity and any person’s soul: “Could we know each other in
the slightest without the arts?”
So, in that theme, you may have received a pre-performance email from
us reminding you that you’re coming to the Arts Club (if you didn’t, please consider giving
us your email address, as it’s just awful to forget when you’re coming!) As part of that
reminder, there is a little squib about a post-performance anonymous survey we’re
conducting that we will email you after this show. But why are we asking for your help?
This survey is a tool for us to understand your response to the art we produce on our stages.
It measures not where you sat, or where you bought your ticket, but rather, did you lose
yourself in the performance? Did you have an emotional response to what you have
experienced at the Arts Club? Did the story we presented make you think about a community
other than your own, or make you feel proud of the local artists you saw, or entertain you?
Or all of the above! In other words, did we help you to know each other?
So I hope you can help us out. It will take you 10 minutes to complete, but it will allow us to
tell our story for a generation to come. Thank you for your help.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Long before movies were a primary source of entertainment, there was
vaudeville in the US, and music hall in the UK. These variety shows were a
combination of comedians, musical acts, and acrobatic feats. American
television would later reinvent this format with The Ed Sullivan Show. The
Stanley Theatre was originally built as a vaudeville house (a fact that Amir
Ofek implemented into his set design.) One Man, Two Guvnors pays tribute
to that form of entertainment, but the comic lineage goes further back than
vaudeville and the music hall.
Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors is an adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s 18th century A
Servant of Two Masters, which in turn, is an adaptation of Commedia dell’arte scenes.
Commedia dell’arte originated in Italy in the 14th century, and consisted of a travelling troupe
of skilled performers arriving into a town, collecting the juicy local gossip, and incorporating
that information into mostly improvised skits, acrobatics, and musical numbers. Commedia
troupes flourished across Europe for centuries, influencing the comedies of Shakespeare,
Moliere and Goldoni. Saturday Night Live could be considered a modern day equivalent of this
comedic form. Traditionally, most of the stock characters of Commedia are masked, with
each one fueled by primal motives, such as food, sex, and/or greed. Even the Young Lovers
are usually vain and blinded by love. The female servant, Columbina, is often the smartest
character (Dolly in this play). The character Francis is based upon Arlecchino— a child-like,
impish adult who lives only to gratify his impulsive desires. He operates purely from his id,
and is not that bright. The Arlecchino character is alive and thriving in present day comic
actors such as Will Ferrell, Melissa McCarthy, and our own Andrew McNee.
Bean sets this play in Brighton, England, 1963, on the cusp of our modern-day world. A time
just far enough back to allow us to be
musically nostalgic, but also to poke fun at

THE ROLLICKING WINNER OF THE 2013 TONY
AWARD FOR BEST PLAY
“Durang shows us just how funny unhappiness can
be” —The San Francisco Examiner
Christopher Durang’s witty mash-up of Chekhov
characters and smartphones is a delightful new
farce for our hyperconnected era. Middle-aged
siblings Vanya and Sonia live an angst-ridden,
melancholic existence on their family farm.
Housecleaner-cum-soothsayer Cassandra, whose
hilariously ambiguous prophecies keep them
befuddled, provides the only break from monotony.
That is, until their glamorous movie-star sister,
Masha, swans in for a surprise visit—along with her
hunky 20-something boy toy, Spike.

ARTS CLUB THEATRE COMPANY STAFF
The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage’s rich history began December 15, 1930, with the screening of Lillian Gish’s first talkie, One
Romantic Night. Famous Players bought the Stanley in 1941 and operated the venue until it closed in September 1991 due to declining
revenues. The theatre was purchased by The Stanley Theatre Society in 1997 and opened a year later as an Arts Club Theatre Company
venue. The stunning restoration received a 1999 City of Vancouver Heritage Award.
