NFPA 14 (2013 Ed.) Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems
This four-hour course focuses on the design and installation of standpipes while highlighting the 2013
edition changes of NFPA 14. This lecture-based seminar discusses key definitions, classes and types of
standpipes, installation and design criteria, and the requirements for plans and calculations. Upon
completion of this course, the student should be able to explain the organization and key definition in
NFPA 14; describe the types and classes of standpipes; describe the installation criteria for standpipes;
describe the design criteria for the types and classes of standpipes; and explain the requirements for plans
and calculations for standpipes.
Required materials to bring: NFPA 14 (2013 Ed.) standard.

Instructor: Russ Leavitt, CFPS, SET
Russ is the Executive Chairman of Telgian Corporation an international fire protection and life safety
services organization. He is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, holds a Level IV
certification from NICET in Fire Sprinkler Layout, and is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist. He is a
licensed contractor with 33 years of experience in the design, installation, and testing of fire protection
systems. He currently serves as the chair for the Technical Committee on Sprinkler System Discharge
Criteria (NFPA 13) and as a member of the Technical Committee for Sprinkler System Installation (NFPA
13), the NFPA 25 Technical Committee, the Technical Committee for Commissioning and Integrated
Testing (NFPA 3 and 4), and the NFPA 5000 (building code) Technical Correlating Committee. Russ is a
long time instructor for AFSA, a senior instructor for NFPA’s Professional Development Series, and is a
sought after speaker and trainer throughout the fire protection industry. He has authored a number of
articles and training materials including the AFSA study guide for NICET certification in Inspections and
Testing, the AFSA online hydraulics course, and the Fire Smarts Residential Sprinkler training guide. He is a
major contributor for the NFPA 25 Handbook (2011 Ed.) published by NFPA. Mr. Leavitt is a member of
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE).
