Scholarship Ceremony 2015
Welcome to the
Scholarship Ceremony 2015
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to
our 2015 Scholarship Ceremony, where we are
celebrating the exceptional achievements of our
newest scholars at the University.
The University of Bath is well established as a
nurturing environment for enterprising minds and
our reputation goes from strength to strength.
We aim to provide a welcoming, inclusive campus
community that values the individual and supports
the realisation of their potential. Last year the
University was ranked first for student satisfaction
in the National Student Survey for the second year
in a row and therefore is best placed to enable our
exceptional scholars to excel.
This is complemented by the continuing strength
of the University’s research. We performed
outstandingly well in the Research Excellence
Framework 2014 and were placed 13th in the
research quality ranking of UK universities.
The generosity of our alumni and friends is providing
opportunities to increasing numbers of outstanding
students from the UK and abroad. It is not just your
financial support, but also your belief in our scholars
and the advice which you give them, that enables
them to be successful now and in the future.
Thank you for playing your part in this.

Undergraduate Scholarships
Alumni Fund Scholarships
Alumni Fund supporters have created over 150 scholarships since the scheme began in
2005, at which time they were the only academic scholarships offered at the University.
Scholarship recipients are Home/EU students with low to moderate assessed family
income, with excellent academic achievement and meeting at least one of the wideningparticipation criteria. The scholarships help them to overcome the barriers they face to
make the most of their University experience and excel throughout their degree course
and beyond.

Brian and Margaret Roper
The Brian & Margaret Roper
Scholarship Fund enables
students from low-income
backgrounds to study at
the University of Bath. It has
supported 145 undergraduates
so far, with a further 21 awarded
this year. On behalf of all the
students whose burden has
been lifted by their generosity,
the University would like to offer
sincere thanks.
Over the years, the Ropers have donated in the region of £6 million to local
causes, through a family foundation, their business (Roper Rhodes Ltd.) and
private donations. This includes over half a million pounds to the University –
funding sports activities for local schoolchildren in the Sports Training Village
and several arts programmes, as well as scholarships.
Sadly Brian passed away in May 2014. He is greatly missed by his family,
University staff, scholars and the local community. The University will be
celebrating his and Margaret’s generosity by naming the new Student Services
Centre in their honour. The Roper family and the Vice-Chancellor will be officially
opening the Centre on 26 February and will be thrilled to be joined by Roper
Scholars past and present.

“I grew up in Bristol, and was homeeducated. At A-level I chose to study
Mathematics, Further Mathematics,
Physics, and Chemistry, and achieved

“While studying for my A-levels, a
partner and I designed and built a
motorised unit to fit onto a pushchair.
We were selected for the 2013 finals of
the National Science and Engineering
Competition, in London, where we
presented our final prototype. The idea
for this project came about because
both of our sets of parents have had
difficulty with back problems due to
pushing heavy prams up hills.’’

Stephanie Calley,
Lloyds Scholar
“My father witnessed the University
campus being built back in the 1960s,
but since then, he has battled cancer, two
strokes and a heart attack. My biggest
worry in life is that my father, now 74, will
not make it to my graduation; therefore I
want to spend as much time with him as
possible. The Lloyds scholarship allows
me to reduce my paid work, therefore
spending more time with him, as well as
concentrating on my studying - I do not
have to compromise on either.”
