Responses due Wednesday 11 February.
In an ongoing spirit of openness, Pope Francis and the Vatican have issued a call for
further feedback to enlighten the discussions at the conclusion of the Synod on the
Family. The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference received the official
“lineamenta”, or preparatory documents, from the Vatican just prior to Christmas.
These are intended to guide the receipt of final input from the individual bishops’
conferences. Participation in the latest survey is a way to take an active role in shaping how the church shares the Gospel and best respond to the needs of those
around us. An online version of the survey will be accessible via the diocesan
website www.twb.catholic.org.au . Written responses should be sent to Fr Peter
Schultz, Diocesan Chancellor, at the following address: The Marian Centre, PO
Box 756, Toowoomba, QLD 4350. Alternatively, you may wish to email your response to Fr Schultz on: [email protected]

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, REFLECTION AND ACTION
A GAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING
will be celebrated on 8th February 2015 honouring the Feast of
St Josephine Bakhita for the Year of Consecrated Life. The Holy Father
has commented on various occasions on this new form of slavery and
devoted the recent Message for the World Day of Peace to this theme.
The Catholic Church, and, in particular, women’s religious orders have
worked in many parts of the world to combat the trade in human
beings.

DIOCESAN EVENTS
Would you like to travel overseas to see the life-changing work of
the Church first hand? In 2015, you are invited to join Catholic Mission’s Brisbane Director, David
McGovern on an immersion trip to India. Taking place in
the first part of the year, the 10 day journey will expose you
to the missionary work of the Church and the lives being
changed. It will show, as the first reading from Isaiah reminds us this weekend, that “the word that goes from [God’s] mouth does not return
empty” and that His will is indeed being carried out, with the generosity of our donors
and the faithfulness of missionary nuns, brothers and priests. For details, such as exact
dates, a full itinerary and costs, please contact the Brisbane office of Catholic Mission,
during office hours, on (07) 3336 9239.

REFLECTION
This is the first of the miracles of Jesus recounted in
Mark’s Gospel and it is a significant introduction to the
person of Jesus and the power he possesses. Only a few
verses earlier, at his baptism, Jesus had been revealed
as the beloved Son of God. In this short text, Mark contrasts Jesus and the authority of his teaching with that
of the scribes. Jesus teaches in such a way that he
makes a deep impression on his hearers. Clearly, this is
because his authority and his wisdom come from God.
Whilst his human audience may still be unclear as to
the true identity of Jesus, this is not the case with his
‘other-worldly’ audience: the unclean spirits know exactly who Jesus is-the Holy One of God-and they recognise his authority and obey his command. They
know that the power of the Almighty is greater than the
power of the evil one.

“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?”
What does Jesus want of you at this point in your
life?

“I know who you are: the Holy One of God.” Is it
difficult for you to make this claim?

Who do you think Jesus is?

First Reading
Deuteronomy 18:15-20
I will put my words into the prophet’s mouth, and he
will tell them all I command.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 94:1-2, 6-9. R.v.9
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Second Reading
Corinthians 7:32-35
The unmarried woman dedicates herself to the things
of the Lord, that she might be holy.
Gospel Acclamation
Matthew 4:16
A people in darkness have seen a great light:
a radiant dawn shines on those lost in death.
Gospel
Mark 1:21-28
This is a new kind of teaching that speaks with
authority.
Jesus called out to them, "Come, be my disciples,
and I will show you how to fish for people!"
