The Sentry January 22, 2015 Page 1 NEWS Volume XXI Number 5 www.flsentry.com Unemployment rate fell again in December Florida’s unemployment rate continues to drop. New numbers released Friday show that the state’s unemployment rate for December was 5.6 percent. That’s dip of 0.2 percent from the previous month. The state’s unemployment rate matches the national unemployment rate. Florida added an estimated 12,700 jobs in December. The unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since the spring of 2008 when it was 5.4 percent. The new figures show there are roughly 543,000 people out of work in the state. Gov. Rick Scott announced the new jobs numbers during a visit to an ocean freight shipping company in South Florida. Florida’s unemployment rate drop since 2010 was initially because people stopped looking for work. But economists say that trend changed in 2014 as the economy started to recover. Man shot for ramming police car A Broward County man has been fatally shot by police. The Broward Sheriff’s Office says officers from the Lauderhill Police Department were responding to a call about a stolen vehicle Friday. Authorities say 29-year-old suspect Demaris Turner rammed a police car as officers tried to apprehend him. An officer and a police dog were in the patrol car, and one detective fired at Turner. Turner was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The detective in the rammed car was not injured; the police dog is hospitalized. Lauderhill Police asked the Broward Sheriff’s Office to investigate. That investigation is ongoing. Suspects in distraction theft nabbed Deputies say Nicholas Wolf confessed to crime, Joshua Brouckaert boarded flight to Las Vegas Two Fort Lauderdale men have been arrested in connection with a distraction theft at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Oakland Park. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies said the Fort Lauderdale Police Department identified the men as Joshua Brouckaert, 28, and Nicholas Wolf, 18. BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said one of the thieves knocked on the front door and got the attention of the only employee in the restaurant while the other thief entered through the back door. That thief took the cash drawer, which was placed on a baker’s rack, and ran out. A video shows one of the men as he wipes off the fingerprints from the back door with his shirt sleeves. Less than 24 hours after the video was released, deputies spoke with Wolf by telephone Wednesday afternoon. Deputies said Wolf admitted to taking part in the crime and agreed to turn himself in. An anonymous caller told deputies Brouckaert booked a flight to Las Vegas. He was taken into custody by Las Vegas police once the plane landed. Deputies said Brouckaert had an outstanding warrant in Nevada for carrying a concealed weapon. He was released from prison in April after serving a sentence for burglary. Two admit to illegally taking Keys coral Two Broward County men pleaded guilty Friday to selling rainbow-colored coral taken from protected waters in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and peddling it as legally imported from Haiti and the Dominican Republic. U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said Robert V. Kelton, 60, of Hollywood, and Bruce Brande, 59, of Cooper City, bought and sold mushroom coral and button polyps, both popular with aquarium keepers, through their Miami-based business, D.R. Imports, Inc., between 2006 and 2012. The pair doctored invoice bills for imported shipments of the coral and button polyps by more than $350,000 to cover up the illegal sales, the state CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 Florida adds 728,500 privatesector jobs in four years Governor Rick Scott announced that Florida businesses added 11,500 private-sector jobs in December 2014. The number of private-sector jobs added statewide in November 2014 was also revised up to 39,900 new jobs, 1,300 more jobs than reported last month. Since December 2010, Florida has added 728,500 private-sector jobs. Florida’s statewide unemployment rate in December was 5.6 percent, the lowest since April 2008. Governor Scott made today’s announcement at the grand opening of SeaLand, a leading ocean transportation company that will create 65 new jobs with a capital investment of $350,000 in Miramar. Scott said, “Today we are excited to announce that Florida businesses added 11,500 private-sector jobs in December, for a total of 728,500 private-sector jobs created in only four years.” Since December 2010, Florida’s unemployment rate has dropped 5.5 percentage points, from 11.1 percent down now to 5.6 percent in December 2014. Florida’s unemployment rate has declined or held steady over the month for 49 of the last 52 months. Florida’s December unemployment rate is also down 0.2 percentage point from last month, and down 0.7 percentage point from the December 2013 rate of 6.3 percent. Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Jesse Panuccio said, “With these strong December numbers, we now have the complete picture of Florida’s economic turnaround these past four years. Last year was the best yet in Florida’s recovery, with 225,700 privatesector jobs added, record levels of job demand, a falling unemployment rate, and nation-leading labor force growth. Good policy is driving Florida’s growth. And we’re not done. Governor Scott is proposing a mix of tax cuts and critical investments that will keep Florida working for years to come.” “The Alliance is thrilled that SeaLand has located in Miramar. The company’s rich history and bright future in marine and logistics is a strong addition to two of Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County’s targeted industries. We wish the company continued success,” said Alliance CEO Bob Swindell. Florida’s annual job growth rate has exceeded that of the nation since April 2012. Florida’s private sector job growth month-to-month has been positive for 46 of the last 49 months. December’s private-sector job growth is an increase of 225,700 jobs over the year. TO SUBSCRIBE: January 2015 For 36 years, the mystery of what happened to Dana Null, 15, and Harry Wade Atchison, 19, lay at the bottom of a dark, murky South Florida canal. On Thursday, the answer to that mystery saw the light of the day, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. According to missing persons reports, Null and her boyfriend Atchison attended a rock concert of the band in Hollywood on October 7, 1978. Those missing persons reports reveal that after arriving at Atchison’s home, the couple apparently got into an argument and drove off in Atchison’s 1969 orange Dodge Coronet, never to be seen again. More than 36 years later, BSO said the mystery of what happened to them is at least partially solved. BSO said a South Florida Water Management worker had a piece of his equipment get stuck on the vehicle. Once he realized it was a submerged car he called Sunrise Police. BSO said investigators used the vehicle ID number in the car to link it to the 36year-old missing persons case. However, they weren’t able to recover all of the vehicle. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo builder sentiment index released Tuesday slipped this month to 57, down one point from a revised reading of 58 in December. Even so, builders’ overall sales outlook remains favorable. Readings above 50 indicate more builders view sales conditions as good rather than poor. Builders’ outlook for sales over the next six months and a measure of traffic by prospective buyers both declined, while a view of current sales conditions held steady. The index also found sentiment improved in the West, Northeast and Midwest, but took a step back in the South. The latest reading is consistent with the NAHB’s forecast that the U.S. housing market will continue to improve at a gradual pace this year. Sales of new homes grew at a sluggish pace for much of 2014. Just 399,000 new homes were bought in the first 11 months of the year, a 0.2 percent improvement from the same period in 2013. That’s still far off from the annual rate of 700,000 seen during the 1990s. Rising prices and essentially flat incomes have cut into affordability for many would-be buyers, particularly first-time buyers. Still, broader economic trends remain favorable for builders. The unemployment rate has fallen to 5.6 percent, down from 6.7 percent 12 months ago. And mortgage interest rates remain near historic lows, making it less expensive to buy a home. Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates fell last week for the third straight week, with the benchmark 30-year rate declining to 3.66 percent, its lowest level since May 2013. In addition, new guidelines that affect government-backed home loans could make it less costly for first-time buyers to come up with a down payment or afford private mortgage insurance. In the latest NAHB index, which was based on responses from 396 builders, the index gauging current sales conditions for single-family homes held at 62. Builders’ outlook for sales over the next six months fell four points to 60, while a measure of traffic by prospective buyers slipped two points to 44. Financial planner accused of scamming seniors at Pembroke Pines Century Village Police say Ariel Hernandez recruited victims at Pembroke Pines retirement community A 47-year-old man accused of scamming seniors living at Century Village out of thousands of dollars was arrested Wednesday. Ariel Hernandez faces two counts of theft from persons 65 or older. Pembroke Pines police said Hernandez embezzled at least $200,000 from two Century Village residents, and two more have come forward. Hernandez was a licensed financial planner, but his license has since been revoked. Police said Hernandez befriended many of his victims while working at a bank adjacent to Century Village. Police said he would invest their money, but he also wired thousands of dollars at a time from their account to his. Another financial planner for a Century Village resident noticed the irregularities and called police. Police said Hernandez even recruited his victims from the retirement community. “There were fliers delivered throughout Century Village during different periods and those fliers had information inviting seniors to a free lunch, and at that free lunch there would be presentations made regarding financial planning where the suspect was present at,” Capt. Al Xiques said. “His exact involvement is still part of this investigation.” A judge set Hernandez’s bond at $200,000 Thursday, but that amount could be increased when more charges are expected to be filed Friday. Dershowitz: ‘Sex slave’ accuser is 'serial liar, prostitute' Alan Dershowitz emphatically denied allegations made in newly-filed court papers that he had sex six times with an underage girl who at the time was serving as a “sex slave” for wealthy financier — and convicted sex offender — Jeffrey Epstein. “This is a woman who is a serial liar,” Dershowitz told reporters. “She’s lied, lied, lied, lied.” “But she wasn’t lying about being sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein,” he was asked. “That is a different issue,” said Dershowitz. “That is between her and Jeffrey Epstein.” The woman is Virginia Roberts, one of as many as 40 women who allege that Epstein recruited them while they were minors into a sex ring based at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion. Roberts alleges in a 14-page affidavit — which included newly-released photos she said were taken by Epstein when she was 15 — that Epstein groomed her as “sex slave” to gratify not only him but his powerful friends. She wrote that she was introduced to Epstein at the mansion by heiress Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of the late British publisher Robert Maxwell, on the pretext that she would be paid to give him a “massage,” which she wrote was Epstein’s “code word for sexual encounters.” “From the first time I was taken to Epstein’s mansion that day, his motivations and actions were sexual, as were Maxwell’s,” Roberts writes in the affidavit. “My father was not allowed inside. I was brought up some stairs. There was a naked guy, Epstein, on the table in the room. Rebekah Erler has been presented by the White House as a woman who was discovered by the president after she wrote to him last March about her economic hardships. She was showcased in the speech as proof that middle class Americans are coming forward to say that Obama’s policies are working. Unmentioned in the White House bio of Erler is that she is a former Democratic campaign operative, working as a field organizer for Sen. Patty Murray (D., Wash.). This also wasn’t the first time the White House used the former Democratic campaign staffer as a political prop. Obama spent a “day in the life” of Erler in June so that he could have “an opportunity to communicate directly with the people he’s working for every day.” Reuters revealed Erler’s Democratic affiliations following that June event, and the Minnesota Republican Party attacked Obama for being “so out of touch with reality that he thinks a former Democrat campaign staffer speaks for every Minnesotan.” Scott urges tax cuts on cellphones, TV Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who tried unsuccessfully during his first term to dramatically cut back taxes for the state’s businesses and corporations, is now pushing for tax cuts aimed directly at consumers instead. Last year Scott targeted rolling back fees charged on auto tags. On Tuesday, Scott rolled out his latest idea: A nearly $500 million cut in the taxes that Floridians pay on various communications services including cable television, cellphones and traditional phone lines. The Scott administration estimates that the 3.6 percent tax cut would save the average Floridian more than $40 a year of what Scott calls “real money.” “Our economy is improving and while it’s tempting for government to always think they can spend your money better than you - it’s your money,” Scott said in a statement. Scott promised a cut in the communications services tax during his reelection campaign last fall, but he released additional details during a visit to a Central Florida business group. The Republican governor is pledging to cut overall taxes by more than $1 billion over the next two years. Scott back in 2010 promised to eliminate the state’s corporate income tax within seven years, but he has been forced to back away from that promise amid ongoing resistance from the GOP-controlled Florida Legislature. Scott’s tax-cutting proposals are coming at a time when state legislators are expected to have a budget windfall of roughly $1 billion even after paying for increased school enrollment and setting aside money for reserves. But Scott has also promised to increase per-student funding in the state’s public schools. There will likely be a push to boost spending on the state’s prison system, which has come under scrutiny for the deaths of dozens of inmates, as well as demands for additional tax cuts and additional spending on environmental programs. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, and chairman of the House Finance and Tax Committee, called Scott’s proposal a “starting point.” Gaetz, however, contended that it would be the goal of the House to “find even more ways to decrease the tax burden on Florida’s families.” Bomb squad detonates items after standoff in Manors Dershowitz ity with Epstein ... It was basically every day and was like going to school ... I was trained to be ‘Everything a man wanted me to be.’ It wasn’t just sexual training — they wanted me to be able to cater to all the needs of the men they were going to send to me.” In the affidavit, she alleges that Dershowitz was one of those men and that she had sex with him six times beginning when she was 16 at Epstein’s Roberts residences, as well as on his jet and private island. She also added details about her allegations that Epstein — who served 13 months in jail after being convicted of soliciting a minor for sex in 2008 — ordered her to have sex on three occasions with Prince Andrew in London at the age of 17, paying her $15,000 after the first instance. Dershowitz said Roberts was a prostitute and questioned whether she is now, at the age of 31, a fit mother for her three children. “She’s now an admitted prostitute,” said Dershowitz. “I can tell you she is still a prostitute: she is selling these false stories now for money about me. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 There were tense moments inside a Wilton Manors neighborhood Monday after a police bomb squad was called in to detonate a number of items at a man’s home – a man who police said had been setting fires. Sgt. Christopher Chadwick of Wilton Manors Policesaid that police units were dispatched at around 11 a.m. to the home at 400 N.W. 24th St. “Neighbors were complaining that a man was setting small brush fires and when we got here that man was not able to answer questions in full sentences and was not coherent. We found that there were shotgun shells near the fire,” said Chadwick. “We further found devices that were a concern so our officers backed off and the Fort Lauderdale police bomb squad was called in,” he said. “A robotic device was used and some items were detonated. Now the investigation is ongoing.” Chadwick could not say exactly what the exploded items were. They were blown up at around 3:45 p.m. Just before that happened, an officer could be heard shouting twice “fire in the hole.” Then there was the sound of an explosion. No one was injured. Neighbors had been evacuated. Chadwick identified the man in question but he has not been charged. Chadwick said charges are pending. Neighbors said the man has lived in the home for 15 years and liked to set fires. They said police had been called to his home before. Police could not initially confirm that. Neighbor Dwayne Quill said he saw something very unusual at the man’s home. “I was coming back from the dentist and I saw an older man and there were a number of fires by his home,” he said. “I noticed a number of things were ablaze.” “I thought he was going to burn down the house,” said Quill. Man burns to death in sauna A South Florida family is grieving following the sudden death of their loved one. Dennis Antiporek, 68, left a note Sunday night saying he was going to the sauna. Hours later, when he hadn’t returned, his daughter went to look for him. “When I opened the door, I looked and there was a black man in the sauna. It wasn’t my dad so I shut the door and I looked, the clothes hanging it was his clothes,” said Lara Antiporek, Dennis’s daughter. Ronnie Antiporek, Dennis Antiporek’s wife, can’t get the image out of her mind. “I close my eyes and I just see his face charred,” said Ronnie Antiporek. “And this sounds horrible, but there was skin on the floor and on the bench and we shouldn’t have had to see that.” She says Dennis was her high school sweetheart. He died just shy of his 69 birthday and their 50 wedding anniversary. The family has hired a lawyer who plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the management company and the condo’s homeowner’s association, Eden Isles Condominiums. The family’s lawyer believes the timer in the sauna failed to shut off the heat. “First and foremost, we want to make sure that this community maintains a level of safety for all residents,” said Attorney Joseph Madalon. All though Dennis Antiporek’s death was first classified as a natural, his body has been turned over to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. The team’s 33-page research report shows corporal punishment persists in nearly half of Florida school districts, mostly in the state’s rural northern counties, and “it’s the youngest, most impressionable children – elementary school students – who most often are subjected” to paddling. “Paddling is archaic,” said Joseph Gagnon, a UF College of Education associate professor of special education and one of the report’s three authors. “We need to spread awareness that scientific evidence increasingly justifies abolishing corporal punishment in favor of more effective, positive ways to manage classroom behavior.” Gagnon said most current research shows paddling has little or no positive long-term effect on students, can lower their self-esteem, and instill hostility and rage without curbing the undesired behavior, “yet there are still pockets of L'Acqua Azzurra Florida and other states where corporal punishment continues to be used.” Paddling in schools has been banned in 31 states, and the UF report cites 16 national expert organizations that have categorically opposed and discredited corporal punishment. They include the National Education Association, American Bar Association, American Psychological Association, American Medical Association, and national associations for both elementary and secondary school principals. The study report also lists nearly 100 published research citations and references. The UF study was funded by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an internationally known civil rights and social justice activist organization based in Montgomery, Ala. The SPLC is pushing for the elimination of corporal punishment in school systems in Florida and across the nation. Tania Galloni, an attorney with the SPLC’s Miami office, said the emotional and psychological damage done to a child who has been paddled is reason enough to end corporal punishment. “(Paddling) is a tightly controlled form of school-sponsored violence, and it undermines the notion that a school is supposed to be a place where children feel safe,” Galloni said. In Florida during the 2012-2013 school year, 28 of 67 school districts administered corporal punishment, according to the Florida Department of Education. The UF report shows the Suwannee County district, with a student population of nearly 6,000 at the time of the survey, led the state with 359 paddling instances. Holmes County, with more than 3,300 students enrolled, was next with 306 instances. Madison and Holmes counties also had the highest percentage of students experiencing corporal punishment during the 2010-2011 school year, according to the UF study. Each showed nearly 10 percent of its students being paddled. Washington County was third on the list with almost 9 percent of 3,485 students being paddled. The remaining 25 school districts using corporal punishment, on average, paddled less than 2 percent of their students, with eight districts reporting rates below 1 percent. Gagnon and co-author Brianna L. Kennedy-Lewis, an assistant professor of curriculum, teaching and teacher education, have presented their research findings to Florida legislators and are working with the SPLC to target other education leaders, policymakers and the general public to raise awareness for the need to end paddling. Gagnon, Kennedy-Lewis and Sungur Gurel, a doctoral student and statistician, spent eight months researching and writing their findings and recommendations. Gagnon evaluated public data on Florida schools’ use of corporal punishment and similar approaches to discipline. He also surveyed Florida principals to identify the use of preventive strategies and other non-violent, research-proven approaches to student behavior management. Kennedy-Lewis interviewed 36 school administrators representing 27 Florida school districts that allowed corporal punishment. “We were trying to find out what drives the whole punitive approach,” Kennedy-Lewis said. “As it turns out, many school administrators would just as soon do away with this type of punishment.” Call (954) 793-7206 Pool Service Broward County Florida Welcome L'Acqua Azzura provides professional pool service in Broward County -we have a highly trained and professional staff ready to start any sized job! Ghislaine Maxwell began her “sexual training” when she was 15 and that she had sex with Prince Andrew three times, including one orgy. The affidavit includes the now-famous photo of Roberts arm-in-arm with the prince during a trip with Epstein to London when she was 17. She said she had sex with him shortly thereafter and reported on it with Epstein, who paid her $15,000, the following day. She said she next had sex with him in the “dungeon” — or massage room — of Epstein’s New York mansion and was “only paid $400.” She alleges the third time occurred on Epstein’s Bahamian island, Little Saint James, and involved Epstein, Prince Andrew and eight other “young girls.” Roberts writes that the denial from Buckingham Palace that Prince Andrew had any sexual contact with her was “false and hurtful to me.” “Given what he knows and has seen, I was hoping that they would simply voluntarily tell the truth about everything,” she writes. Regarding Dershowitz, who lives on Miami Beach and has emphatically denied he has ever met or seen Roberts. She claims he was often with Epstein and “was so comfortable with the sex that was going on he would even come and chat with Epstein while I was giving oral sex to Epstein.” She writes that she had sex with Dershowitz “at least six times,” the first time when she was 16, at Epstein’s mansions in New York and Palm Beach, his ranch in New Mexico, on the Bahamian Island and on Epstein’s private jet while in the presence of another girl. “I have recently seen a former Harvard law professor identified as Alan Dershowitz on television calling me a ‘liar,’” she writes. “He is lying by denying that he had sex with me. This man is the same man I had sex with at least six times.” She writes that she believes by coming forward she can help prevent what happened to her from happening to others. “These powerful people seem to think that they don’t have to follow the same rules as everyone else,” she writes. “That is wrong. Dershowitz is an admitted longtime friend of Epstein’s who frequented his homes at the time Roberts and other young girls were in Epstein’s employ. But he insisted he never saw an underage girl in Epstein’s company. A former Epstein employee, the late Alfredo Rodriguez, testified under oath that Dershowitz was at the Palm Beach mansion at the same time underage girls were at the home. “That’s not true,” said Dershowitz. “I was never in Jeffrey Epstein’s house or any of the houses in the presence of any young woman. Now were there other young women in other parts of the house giving massages when I wasn’t around? I have no idea of that. I can only say I never saw a young underage woman. If I had I would have left the house and never come back, period.” He said he had one massage at Epstein’s home and it was with an adult woman. “I kept my underwear on during the massage,” he said. “I don’t like massages particularly.” One of the more salacious allegations made by Roberts is that Dershowitz “was so comfortable with the sex that was going on that he would even come and chat with Epstein while I was giving oral sex to Epstein.” Dershowitz called that allegation absurd. “Alan Dershowitz was standing there and talking about what? The weather, the stock market? It’s the most preposterous thing imaginable,” said Dershowitz. Dershowitz, who has issued a denial to Roberts’ basic claims in a sworn affidavit of his own, said he would willingly be deposed on the matter. Roberts’ attorneys have claimed that Dershowitz has refused to submit to deposition. When questioned about it, Dershowitz said he would be deposed in the case, but only after Roberts and her two lawyers are deposed. The lawyers have sued Dershowitz for defamation after he alleged they should be disbarred for initially putting Roberts’ allegations in court papers. “I am happy today to express my willingness to be deposed after the three of them are deposed,” he said. “That’s the order it should occur because they are the accusers. I am the one who is defending myself against their accusations.” Commercial Insurance Expert Witness William D. The researchers also found that exposure to DNAdamaging chemicals after a bout of inflammation boosts these mutations even more, further increasing cancer risk. The findings confirm a longstanding theory about why inflammation and cancer are linked, and offer possible ways to help prevent and treat cancer, says Bevin Engelward, an MIT professor of biological engineering and senior author of a Jan. 15 PLoS Genetics paper describing the findings. “Chronic inflammation drives a lot of cancers, including pancreatic, esophageal, liver, and colon cancers,” says Engelward, who is also deputy director of the MIT Center for Environmental Health Sciences. “There are things that people with chronic inflammation could do to avoid exposures that would be problematic for them. For example, certain foods lead to DNA damage and could be avoided.” Inflammatory diseases have been linked to greater risk for cancer of the colon, pancreas, and liver. In these chronic inflammatory diseases, immune cells produce highly reactive molecules containing oxygen and nitrogen, which can damage DNA. Inflammation also stimulates cells to divide. Biologists had theorized that simultaneous DNA damage and cell division during inflammation could lead to cancer because dividing cells are more vulnerable to mutations caused by DNA damage. However, until recently it was difficult to test this hypothesis in animals under physiologically relevant conditions. “You have to have the right set of tools, and they just weren’t available before,” says Engelward, who is also a member of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). “You need to control inflammation onset, you have to have markers for DNA damage that you can see in the tissue, and you need a readout for mutation that you can see in the tissue.” Before this study began, Engelward and her students engineered a mouse that allows them to track DNA mutations. Whenever a certain class of mutations occurs in the pancreas, the cell with the mutation fluoresces, allowing it to be seen with a standard microscope. Using this model for mutation detection, researchers induced inflammation in the pancreas and found that the amount of mutation depends on the timing of bouts of inflammation. When the inflammation occurred in short bursts a week or more apart, the researchers did not see any evidence of increased mutations. However, when the bouts occurred within a few days of each other, there was a significant increase in mutations. Further studies in the pancreas revealed that inflammation-provoked cell division does not start happening until several days after inflammation begins, while most of the DNA damage occurs right away. This DNA damage is repaired fairly easily without causing potentially cancerous mutations. However, if another bout of inflammation induces DNA damage at a time when cells are dividing due to the previous bout of inflammation, many mutations appear. This delay between DNA damage and cell division likely serves as a defense mechanism against mutations from acute bouts of inflammation. However, this defense breaks down when the inflammation occurs soon after the original flare-up or is sustained for a long time. In a second set of experiments, the researchers studied the effects of exposure to an alkylating agent similar to those found in food, cosmetics, environmental pollutants, and certain cancer chemotherapy drugs. Alkylating agents cause damage to DNA, which cells are usually able to repair. However, if too much occurs, alkylated DNA bases lead to mutations that can cause a cell to become cancerous. Engelward and Kiraly suspected that alkylation-induced mutations would accumulate at a much faster rate in inflamed tissue, where cells are dividing rapidly, than in healthy tissue. This turned out to be exactly what happened. “These findings suggest that chronic inflammation potentially results in increased DNA damage and proliferation that together can conspire to increase the chance of cancer formation,” says Peter McKinnon, a professor of genetics and tumor cell biology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital who was not part of the research team. This discovery suggests that people with chronic inflammatory diseases, which are common, may be more sensitive to carcinogens in the air, food and water. Also, developing fetuses and very young children may also be more sensitive to these agents because their cells are dividing more rapidly, Engelward says. Another new study from the Engelward laboratory, published in the journal Carcinogenesis, shows that animals treated with a growth-inducing hormone are more susceptible to damage-induced mutations. “A lot of what we do for safety evaluation is based on adults, and not … during development. The conditions are really very different. Our findings are consistent with studies done in the MIT laboratories of John Essigmann and Gerald Wogan showing that there is a critical ‘window of susceptibility’ to DNA damage-induced mutations during development. I’m hoping that studies like these will help to call attention to the importance of analyzing mutation susceptibility during development,” Engelward says. The findings could also have implications for cancer treatment, because many chemotherapy drugs work by damaging DNA. Cancer cells divide frequently, making them more susceptible to mutations, which can help them to survive chemotherapy because some of those mutations confer drug resistance. The new results offer support to the idea that increasing the toxicity of DNA-damaging chemotherapy by novel drug combinations can make cancer chemotherapy more effective by suppressing evolution of the tumor, Engelward says. While this study focused on the pancreas, Engelward’s lab now investigates mutations in the colon and the lung using a new version of the engineered mice described in another recent paper in PLoS Genetics. Using the newly developed mice it is now possible to study mutations in virtually any tissue and to learn about how infectious diseases impact mutations. “Our fundamental advances in our understanding of inflammation and mutations form the basis for our ongoing studies of inflammation of the lung caused by infections, such as influenza and S. pneumoniae,” says Engelward. New laser could upgrade the images in tomorrow’s technology A new semiconductor laser developed at Yale has the potential to significantly improve the imaging quality of the next generation of high-tech microscopes, laser projectors, photo lithography, holography, and biomedical imaging. Based on a chaotic cavity laser, the technology combines the brightness of traditional lasers with the lower image corruption of light emitting diodes (LEDs). The search for better light sources for high-speed, full-field imaging applications has been the focus of intense experimentation and research in recent years. Several Yale labs and departments collaborated on the research, with contributions from scientists in applied physics, electrical and biomedical engineering, and diagnostic radiology. “This chaotic cavity laser is a great example of basic research ultimately leading to a potentially important in- vention for the social good,” said coauthor A. Douglas Stone, the Carl A. Morse Professor and chair of applied physics, and professor of physics. “All of the foundational work was primarily motivated by a desire to understand certain classes of lasers — random and chaotic — with no known applications. Eventually, with input from other disciplines, we discovered that these lasers are uniquely suited for a wide class of problems in imaging and microscopy.” One of those problems is known as Combating whooping cough requires informed vaccine booster schedules A key to victory in battle, according to Chinese general and military strategist Sun Tzu, is to know your enemy. In the current fight against whooping cough resurgence, perhaps the biggest obstacle is an incomplete understanding of its underlying causes, according to a University of Michigan population ecologist. Though the root causes of the resurgence remain "elusive and contentious," public health officials in many countries—including the United States—have introduced whooping cough booster shots into childhood immunization schedules, If those booster schedules are based on a misdiagnosis of the problem, the shots are likely to be "epidemiologi- cally ineffective and economically costly," they conclude. Rohani is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, a professor of complex systems, and a professor of epidemiology. The first author of the PNAS paper is former UM doctoral student Maria Riolo, who is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago. Rohani said he strongly supports childhood vaccinations and a tightening of personal-belief exemptions that allow some parents to opt out of vaccinating their children. In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a series of five shots for whooping cough, also known as pertussis, for children under 7. Additional shots are recommended for “speckle.” Speckle is a random, grainy pattern, caused by high spatial coherence that can corrupt the formation of images when traditional lasers are used. A way to avoid such distortion is by using LED light sources. The problem is, LEDs are not bright enough for high-speed imaging. The new, electrically pumped semiconductor laser offers a different approach. It produces an intense emission, but with low spatial coherence. “For full-field imaging, the speckle contrast should be less than ~4% to avoid any disturbance for human inspection,” explained Hui Cao, professor of applied physics and of physics, who is the paper’s corresponding author. “As we showed in the paper, the standard edge-emitting laser produced speckle contrast of ~50%, while our laser has the speckle contrast of 3%. So our new laser has completely eliminated the issue of coherent artifact for full-field imaging.” older children and some adults. Riolo and Rohani used a mathematical model to identify pertussis booster schedules that result in the greatest reduction in disease for the lowest economic cost. They looked at several potential causes of the pertussis resurgence separately, though in the real world it's likely that more than one of the mechanisms are simultaneously at play. Their mathematical model uses a "genetic algorithm" that mimics how evolution by natural selection would operate on a population of diverse booster schedules. They found that the most effective booster schedules varied depending on the resurgence mechanisms. Insufficient vaccine coverage can occur when large-scale vaccination campaigns fail to reach enough children or when parents opt out of a vaccination program. Low efficacy means the vaccine sometimes fails to provide protection. Waning vaccine immunity means the vaccine is initially protective, but protection wears off over time. Seeing is not remembering People may have to "turn on" their memories in order to remember even the simplest details of an experience, according to Penn State psychologists. This finding, which has been named "attribute amnesia," indicates that memory is far more selective than previously thought. "It is commonly believed that you will remember specific details about the things you're attending to, but our experiments show that this is not necessarily true," said Brad Wyble, assistant professor of psychology. "We found that in some cases, people have trouble remembering even very simple pieces of information when they do not expect to have to remember them." Wyble and Hui Chen, postdoctoral fellow in psychology, tested the memories of 100 undergraduate students, divided into several groups. Each group performed a variation of the experiment in order to replicate the results for different kinds of information, such as numbers, letters or colors. In each trial participants were shown four characters on a screen arranged in a square -- for example three numbers and one letter -- and were told that they would need to report which corner the letter was in. After a set amount of time, the characters disappeared from the screen and the participants reported where they remembered the letter had been. This part of the task was expected to be easy -- participants rarely made an error. After repeating this simple task numerous times, the participant was asked an unexpected question in order to probe the memory for the very information used to find the letter's location. Four letters appeared on the screen and the participant was asked to identify which one had appeared on the previous screen. Only 25 percent of the participants identified the correct letter -- the same percentage as would be expected to randomly guess it. Similar results were obtained when participants were asked to locate odd numbers, even numbers and colors. "This result is surprising because traditional theories of attention assume that when a specific piece of information is attended, that information is also stored in memory and therefore participants should have done better To beet or not to beet? Researchers test theories of beet juice benefits Athletes who down beet juice before exercising to increase blood flow and improve performance may be surprised at the results of a recent study conducted at Penn State's Noll Laboratory. While beetroot juice rich in nitrates did not enhance muscle blood flow or vascular dilation during exercise, researchers found that it did "destiffen" blood vessels under resting conditions, potentially easing the workload of the heart. Endurance athletes have been known to consume the crimson supplement based on the belief that it may improve blood and oxygen flow in their muscles during training and competition. Some strength and power athletes consume it in hopes that it can improve their ability to withstand muscle fatigue during repeated bouts of high intensity exercise. Now, some patients are asking their doctors if they should drink the juice to lower their high blood pressure. Those potential benefits are what prompted David Proctor, professor of kinesiology and physiology at Penn State, to test the ability of the juice to enhance blood flow to exercising muscles. Proctor, with other researchers, found that the widely held belief regarding improved muscle blood flow did not hold up to their test. They report their results in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism. Proctor and his colleagues gave subjects either a placebo drink containing beetroot juice minus the nitrate or a relatively high dose of nitrate-rich beetroot juice. They found that the latter did not enhance the natural rise in blood flow to the forearm muscles during graded handgrip exercise. "Beetroot juice also had no effect on the dilation (widening) of the brachial artery in these volunteers," said lead author and Penn State physiology graduate student Jin-Kwang Kim. Nitrates, found in highest concentrations in leafy green vegetables such as spinach and beetroot, are converted naturally in the body to nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes and widens blood vessels and affects how efficiently cells use oxygen. A number of manufacturers have found ways to liquefy beetroots and concentrate the nitrate into beetroot juice "shots." "Although several studies have re- on the surprise memory test," said Wyble. Chen and Wyble have called the phenomenon they observed attribute amnesia, as they reported in an article recently published online in the journal Psychological Science. Attribute amnesia occurs when a person uses a piece of information to perform a task, but is then unable to report specifically what that information was as little as one second later. "The information we asked them about in the surprise question was important, because we had just asked them to use it," said Chen. "It was not irrelevant to the task they were given."After the surprise trial, the same question was repeated on the next trial, however it was no longer a surprise. Participants did dramatically better with the average of correct answers between 65 and 95 percent across the different experiments. The researchers point out that this result suggests that people's expectations play an important role in determining what they remember, even for information they are specifically using. "It seems like memory is sort of like a camcorder," said Wyble. "If you don't hit the 'record' button on the camcorder, it's not going to 'remember' what the lens is pointed at. But if you do hit the 'record' button -- in this case, you know what you're going to be asked to remember -- then the information is stored." ported indirect evidence of improved muscle oxygenation during exercise after consuming nitrate-rich supplements such as beetroot juice, none of these studies directly measured blood flow to the contracting muscles," Proctor said. "Our study was the first to directly test this possibility in humans." "The absence of any direct effect on forearm muscle blood flow or artery dilator function was not due to a lack of absorption of the supplement into the blood stream," Proctor added. "Measurements of the breakdown product of the nitrate in the participants' blood indicated that these participants absorbed the nitrate from the drink and converted it to nitrite, the precursor to nitric oxide," Proctor said. The investigators also observed a direct correlation between nitrite levels in the blood and the slowing of participants' arterial pulsation velocity, an indication that the supplement did indeed have a biological (artery de-stiffening) effect. "However, there are circumstances unique to our experimental design that should be considered, as with any study, before drawing any broad conclusions," Proctor said. "We speculate that the null effects on muscle blood flow observed in this first study resulted from two factors." "Subjects were young individuals with blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the 'very healthy' range, he noted. "Therefore, the lack of improvement in muscle blood flow and vessel function following nitrate supplementation could result from the fact that these subjects had well-preserved vascular endothelial function to begin with." "A second contributor could be the relatively small range of forearm exercise intensities we examined in this study." "It is possible that any blood flow enhancing effect of dietary nitrate will only be apparent during higher intensity and fatiguing work intensities; conditions within the muscle that favor the conversion of nitrite to nitric oxide," Proctor said. Study finds genetic predictor of serious hemorrhagic stroke complications University of Florida Health researchers have found a possible predictor for little understood -- but often disabling or even fatal -- stroke complications. The findings may extend to other neurological disorders, said Sylvain Doré, lead author and a professor of anesthesiology, neurology, psychiatry, pharmaceutics and neuroscience at UF’s College of Medicine. For the study, Doré and his team looked at patients who had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke that affects as many as 30,000 Americans each year and accounts for 5 percent of all strokes, according to the American Heart Association. Most often caused by the rupture of an aneurysm, subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs when there is bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues that cover the brain -- often causing death or long-term impairment and disability. For patients who survive the initial subarachnoid hemorrhagic stroke, two-thirds of them still face a lifethreating complication known as cerebral vasospasm, which typically occurs three to 14 days after the initial stroke. The complication occurs when a brain artery temporarily contracts; as a result, the part of the brain formerly supplied by that artery may starve or even die, which causes irreversible brain damage or death. It’s been suggested in the past that one cause of cerebral vasospasm is the compounds within red blood cells, Doré said, which can be released into the brain during rupture of an aneurysm. “Blood is toxic to the brain,” he said. “Every situation where blood goes outside of a blood vessel, it’s toxic.” Specifically, the toxic element is hemoglobin, a protein molecule normally tasked with carrying oxygen and iron to the tissues throughout the body. Each red blood cell is capable of releasing 250 million molecules of hemoglobin, so increased levels of toxicity can happen very quickly, Doré said. However, another molecule traveling throughout the body is haptoglobin, a protein that binds to hemoglobin, helping to nullify its toxic effects -- a job it already performs in various organs within the body. Similar to blood type, each person has one of three haptoglobin phenotypes: Hp1-1, Hp2-1 or Hp2-2. The findings of the study suggest that each phenotype varies in effectiveness when it comes to detoxifying the brain from hemoglobin, and therefore may positively or negatively affect a patient’s outcome. More research needs to be done with a larger group of study participants to further elaborate on these results, said Jenna Leclerc, an M.D.Ph.D. student in the department of anesthesiology and neuroscience and a co-author of the study. The team is enrolling patients for further research it hopes will shed light on the specific rolehaptogoblin plays and how it regulates this hemoglobin pathway and potentially reduces cerebral vasospasm, she said. As you’ve no doubt noticed, your trips to the gas station have been a lot more pleasant these past several months. There’s not much doubt that low oil prices have been welcome to you as a driver. But when oil is cheap, is that good for you as an investor? There’s no clear-cut answer. But consider the following effects of low oil prices: Positive impact on economy — When you spend less at the gas pump, relative to recent years, what will you do with your savings? Like most people, you’ll probably spend most of it on goods and services. If you multiply the amount of your increased spending by the millions of other Americans who are also saving money on gas, you can see that you and your fellow consumers are likely adding billions of dollars to the economy. Typically, a strong economy is also good for the financial markets — and for the people who invest in them. Different results for different sectors — Different sectors within the financial markets may respond in different ways to low oil prices, even if the overall effect is generally positive. For example, businesses such as consumer goods companies and auto manufacturers may respond favorably to cheaper oil and gas. But the picture might be quite a bit different for energy companies. You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to adjust your investment portfolio in response to low oil prices. In fact, you may well want to consult with your financial professional to determine which moves might make sense for your individual situation. Yet there’s actually a bigger lesson to be learned here: Don’t overreact to temporary developments. The recent decline in oil prices has certainly had an economic impact, but no one can predict how long these prices will stay low or what other factors may arise that would affect the financial markets. That’s why you can’t reconfigure your portfolio based on particular events, whatever they may be — oil price drops, interest-rate fluctuations, political squabbles at home, natural disasters in faraway lands, and so on. If you can keep from being overly influenced by specific events, you may be able to gain at least two key benefits: First, by not making trades constantly in reaction to the headlines of the day, you can avoid piling up heavy fees and commissions —costs that can reduce the return rate on your investments. Second, you’ll find that if you aren’t always thinking about what’s going on in the world today, you can focus your investment efforts more intensely on where you want to be tomorrow. The most successful investors set long-term goals and don’t focus on factors they cannot control, such as oil prices, interest-rate changes or other economic events. Instead, these investors make adjustments, as necessary, to accommodate changes in their goals as well as other changes, such as revisions in tax laws — but they basically stick to their same approach for the long term. From the Heartbleed bug that infected many popular websites and services, to the Target security breach that compromised 40 million credit cards, malicious hackers have proved to be detrimental to companies’ financial assets and reputations. To combat these malevolent attackers, or “black hats,” a community of benign hackers, i.e., “white hats,” has been making significant contributions to cybersecurity by detecting vulnerabilities in companies’ software systems and websites and communicating their findings. Researchers at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) are studying white hat behaviors and how the talents of the white hat community can be most effectively used. “Our focus is to understand how this market functions,” said Jens Grossklags, an assistant professor at the College of IST. Grossklags, along with Mingyi Zhao, a doctoral student at the College of IST, and Kai Chen, a postdoctoral scholar at the College of IST, report their findings in their paper, “An Exploratory Study of White Hat Behaviors in a Web Vulnerability Disclosure Program.” In their paper, they study white hat behaviors by analyzing a 3.5-year dataset which documents the contributions of 3,254 white hats and their submitted 16,446 Web vulnerability reports. According to the researchers, undisclosed vulnerabilities in publicly and privately deployed software systems are a significant contributing factor to potentially damaging security incidents. Black hat hackers search for unknown software vulnerabilities and attempt to derive benefit by either exploiting such vulnerabilities to steal data and damage service availability or by selling information about such vulnerabilities on black markets. A recent example is the Heartbleed security bug that was discovered lastApril and dubbed one of the biggest security threats the Internet has ever seen. Heartbleed’s target is an Hackers made world news recently when Korean hackers infiltrateld Sony Media and exposed internal memos. open-source software called OpenSSL that's widely used to encrypt Web communications. Heartbleed can reveal the contents of a server's memory, where sensitive data such as usernames, passwords and credit card numbers are stored. “How can we make sure we detect the vulnerabilities and find them before a major security incident?” Zhao said. A further complication, he added, is the interconnected nature of the Internet -- an attack on an individual website or server has the potential to affect numerous websites. For example, in August 2013, a group claiming to be the Syrian Electronic Army was able to take down the New York Times by hacking into a website in Australia. According to media reports, the group gained control of the Times' Mass die-offs of animals may be increasing in frequency and — for birds, fishes, and marine invertebrates — in severity as well, according to a study of 727 mass mortality events since 1940. Despite the ecological importance of individual mass mortality events, in which a larger than normal number of individuals die within a population, little research has been conducted on patterns across mass mortality events. The new study will help researchers better assess trends in mass mortality events and their causes. “The initial patterns are surprising, in terms of the documented changes to frequencies of occurrences, magnitudes of each event, and the causes of mass mortality,” said Samuel Fey, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale and co-lead author of the paper. “These data also show that we have a lot of room to improve how we document and study these types of rare events.” Fey, along with fellow researchers at the University of San Diego and University of California-Berkeley, report that the magnitude of the die-offs has increased in birds, fishes, and marine invertebrates, held steady among mammals, and decreased in frogs and amphibians. The authors recognized that more scientific research has been done on mass mortality events in the last few decades but said even accounting for this “discovery bias” does not explain all of the increase in such events. The increase in mass mortality events appears to be associated with a rise in disease emergence, biotoxicity, and multiple interacting stressors, they note. Overall, disease was the primary culprit, accounting for 26% of the mass die-offs. The impacts of direct human activity, primarily from environmental contamination, caused 19% of such events. Another major cause was biotoxicity triggered by events such as algae blooms, rapid increases of algae in water systems. Processes directly influenced by climate — such as weather extremes, thermal stress, oxygen stress, or starvation — also contributed accounted collectively for about 25% of mass mortality events. The most severe events were those with multiple causes, the paper shows. “This study should improve our understanding of the continuum of mortality patterns and processes that exist between background mortality levels and species-level extinctions,” Fey said. New tech allowing police to see through house walls? Being used by the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and at least 50 other law enforcement agencies around the country, the Range-R device provides a way for police officers to track people within a home using a Doppler radar system. Shaped similar to a stud finder that you would find in a hardware store, the device can track movements, such as someone taking a breath, up to a distance of about 50 feet. Ideal for a drug raid or a hostage situation, the device could potentially map out all people within a building and help the police make judgement calls on the best plan to breach. According to the manufacturer of the Range-R, the device can penetrate wall materials that include “poured concrete, concrete block, brick, wood, stucco glass, adobe and dirt.” Interestingly, the device cannot track movements through a sheet of metal material and also has difficulty tracking people when being used against a water-soaked wall. Who should you root for now, the bird or the wasp? A new study from University of Michigan researchers suggests that the gardener should cheer for both of them or, more precisely, for the struggle between the predator and the parasite. That kind of competition— even when it involves one creature killing and eating the other in what ecologists call intraguild predation— strengthens and stabilizes biological control systems, the U-M scientists found. "Competition between control agents may actually help suppress pest problems by acting as a system of checks and balances, limiting overexploitation by any one of them," said Theresa Ong, a U-M doctoral candidate and lead author of a paper scheduled for online publication Jan. 20 in the journal Nature Communications. "Thus the coupling of two unstable systems has the counterintuitive result of creating a stable, more diverse system," Ong said. The co-author of the paper is Ong's faculty adviser, John Vandermeer, of the U-M Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Ong and Vandermeer say the findings of their computer-modeling study have potential applications for the control of crop pests, especially in organic farming where synthetic pesticides are not allowed. "Many traditional farmers and environmentalists subscribe to the popular idea that the natural world offers ecosystem services that contribute to the stability, productivity and sustainability of agriculture," Vandermeer said. "That is in sharp contrast to the more industrial view of a farm as a battlefield on which the enemies of production must be vanquished." Ong and Vandermeer argue that in order to achieve effective, pesticidefree control in agriculture, "We must do away with reductionist analyses in favor of more holistic approaches that account for the complex nature of ecosystems."For decades, farmers have attempted to control crop pests by releasing natural enemies of those pests as biological control agents. In addition, startup companies such as HackerOne and BugCrowd, act as brokers between white hats and software companies. “This trend clearly shows that the white hat community is an important force to improve cybersecurity,” Zhao said. A major part of Zhao’s, Grossklag’s and Chen’s research involved examining the relationship between diversity in the white hat community and vulnerability discovery. The researchers discovered that the top contributors to Wooyun constituted only a small fraction of all vulnerability reports, and that less active hackers also contribute high-quality vulnerability reports across a broad spectrum of websites. Grossklags and his colleagues concluded that the community as a whole, rather than a few expert white hats, plays a key role for vulnerability discovery. “While rewarding top contributors may be beneficial, attracting more white hats to participate is equally helpful,” Zhao said. Based on the preliminary results of their research, Grossklags, Zhao and Chen suggest that managers of VDPs and VRPs should not only focus on the top contributors but also try to attract as many white hats as possible as contributors. However, they added, drawing more participation might require the design of new mechanisms for organizing and rewarding white hats. For example, Grossklags said, greater entry rewards could not only widen the white hat community but also provide incentive to not “drift off into the black hat community.” A larger issue in vulnerability discovery, Grossklags said, is that no matter how many vulnerabilities are reported, it is virtually impossible to eradicate all of them. Culprits behind tectonic plate movements Yale-led research may have solved one of the biggest mysteries in geology — namely, why do tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface, which normally shift over the course of tens to hundreds of millions of years, sometimes move abruptly? A new study published Jan. 19 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says the answer comes down to two things: thick crustal plugs and weakened mineral grains. Those effects, acting together, may explain a range of relatively speedy moves among tectonic plates around the world, from Hawaii to East Timor. Of course, in this case “speedy” still means a million years or longer. “Our planet is probably most distinctly marked by the fact that it has plate tectonics,” said Yale geophysicist David Bercovici, lead author of the research. “Our work here looks at the evolution of plate tectonics. How and why do plates change directions over time?” Traditionally, scientists believed that all tectonic plates are pulled by subducting slabs — which result from the colder, top boundary layer of the Earth’s rocky surface becoming heavy and sinking slowly into the deeper mantle. Yet that process does not account for sudden plate shifts. Such abrupt movement requires that slabs detach from their plates, but doing this quickly is difficult since the slabs should be too cold and stiff to detach. According to the Yale study, there are additional factors at work. Thick crust from continents or oceanic plateaux is swept into the subduction zone, plugging it up and prompting the slab to break off. The detachment process is then accelerated when mineral grains in the necking slab start to shrink, causing the slab to weaken rapidly. The result is tectonic plates that abruptly shift horizontally, or continents suddenly bobbing up. “Understanding this helps us understand how the tectonic plates change through the Earth’s history,” Bercovici said. “It adds to our knowledge of the evolution of our planet, including its climate and biosphere.” CAFE BRIE 2765 East Atlantic Blvd Pompano Beach Fl 33062 954 818-9694 NOW OPEN Come in and say hello! Christopher Gabel, 62, was the former chief operating officer of the Hollywood Pavilion psychiatric hospital, 1201 N. 37 Ave. He was sentenced to six years in prison. He also must pay more than $39.3 million in restitution. Medicare paid $40 million of $67 million claimed. Pavilion employees submitted claims to Medicare for treatment that was not provided from April 2003 to September 2012, authorities said. Gabel confessed to being aware of the scheme, while he supervised the inpatient and outpatient facilities. They found Medicare beneficiaries from across the country by paying bribes and kickbacks to patient brokers, authorities said. He plead guilty to accusations that included instructing the patients brokers to falsify invoices. Karen Kallen-Zury, Daisy Miller, Michele Petrie and Christian Coloma were convicted at trial in June 2013 for their roles in this scheme, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Kallen-Zury, HP’s former chief executive officer, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Miller, the clinical director of HP’s inpatient facility, was sentenced to 15 years in prison; and Petrie, the head of HP’s intensive outpatient program, was sentenced to six years in prison. Coloma, the director of physical therapy for an entity associated with HP, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Kallen-Zury, Miller and Petrie were ordered to pay nearly $40 million in restitution, and Coloma was ordered to pay more than $20 million in restitution. Man stabs exgirlfriend’s new boyfriend Junior Normil appeared in Broward court Monday, after he stabbed his exgirlfriend’s new boyfriend in Sunrise, police said. The new couple was on the Broward Transit bus Sunday when Normil spotted them in the back of the bus, police said. “The defendant grabbed a large knife out of his backpack, proceeded toward the rear of the bus to confront the alleged victim, the new boyfriend,” the Normil arrest report said. “The defendant then stabbed the victim in the neck and shoulder.” The ex-girlfriend started shouting in horror. Normil told police officers that he “snapped” and added that the victim was lucky to be alive, because his intention was to stab the victim to death. Normil faces a felony charge. Scott announces Billions to restore the Everglades The governor made an announcement Tuesday that, if passed, could be great news for Florida’s famed River of Grass. Governor Rick Scott announced Tuesday morning that he wants to create a source of money for Everglades restoration that would result in $5 billion over the next 20 years, as part of his 2015-2016 “Keep Florida Working” budget. The budget recommendations will be submitted this week to the Florida Legislature as part of Scott’s proposal. If passed by the Legislature, $150 million will go towards Everglades restoration this year. “Florida has an abundance of natural resources that help create a foundation for our growing economy, whether it is driving our state’s tourism industry or providing a great quality of life that has attracted families to our state for generations. "During my first term, we made historic investments in our springs and Everglades and I am proud to continue to make important investments in our environment this year. "We will keep working to make sure we preserve our natural treasures so Florida can continue to be a top destination for families, visitors and businesses.” Scott said. Those recommendations will also include a proposal to set aside $150 million to acquire environmentallysensitive lands including land that would provide habitat for the Florida panther. The money for Everglades restoration would include the state’s share of restoring the Kissimmee River and constructing two reservoirs. Those projects would help deal with discharges of polluted water from Lake Okeechobee. GMO mosquitoes could be set loose in Florida Keys Millions of genetically modified mosquitoes could be released in the Florida Keys if British researchers win approval to use the bugs against two extremely painful viral diseases. Never before have insects with modified DNA come so close to being set loose in a residential U.S. neighborhood. “This is essentially using a mosquito as a drug to cure disease,” said Michael Doyle, executive director of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, which is waiting to hear if the Food and Drug Administration will allow the experiment. Dengue and chikungunya are growing threats in the U.S., but some people are more frightened at the thought of being bitten by a genetically modified organism. More than 130,000 signed a Change.org petition against the experiment. Even potential boosters say those responsible must do more to show that benefits outweigh the risks. “I think the science is fine, they definitely can kill mosquitoes, but the GMO issue still sticks as something of a thorny issue for the general public,” said Phil Lounibos, who studies mosquito control at the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory. “It’s not even so much about the science – you can’t go ahead with something like this if public opinion is negative.” Mosquito controllers say they’re running out of options that can kill Aedes aegypti, a tiger-striped invader whose biting females spread these viruses. Climate change and globalization are spreading tropical diseases farther from the equator, and Key West, the southernmost U.S. city, is particularly vulnerable. “An arriving person would be infectious for several days, and could infect many of the local mosquitoes,” Doyle said. “Within a few weeks you’d likely end up with several infected mosquitoes for each infected visitor.” There are no vaccines or cures for dengue, known as “break-bone fever,” or chikungunya, which causes painful contortions. U.S. cases remain rare for now, but dengue sickens 50 million people annually worldwide and kills 2.5 percent of the half-million who get severe cases, according to the World Health Organization. Chikungunya has already overwhelmed hospitals and harmed economies across the Caribbean after infecting a million people in the region last year. Insecticides are sprayed year-round from helicopters and door-to-door in charming and crowded neighborhoods throughout the Keys. But because Aedes aegypti don’t travel much and are repeatedly doused with the same chemicals, they have evolved to resist four of the six insecticides used to kill them. Enter Oxitec, a British biotech firm launched by Oxford University researchers. They patented a method of breeding Aedes aegypti with fragments of proteins from the herpes simplex virus and E. coli bacteria as well as genes from coral and cabbage. This synthetic DNA has been used in thousands of experiments without harming lab animals, but it is fatal to the bugs, killing mosquito larvae before they can fly or bite. Oxitec’s lab workers manually remove modified females, aiming to release only males, which feed on nectar and don’t bite for blood like females do. The modified males then mate with wild females whose offspring die, reducing the population. Oxitec has built a breeding lab in Marathon and hopes to release its mosquitoes this spring in Key Haven, a neighborhood of 444 homes closely clustered on a relatively isolated peninsula at the north end of Key West. FDA spokeswoman Theresa Eisenman said no field tests will be allowed until the agency has “thoroughly reviewed all the necessary information.” Company spokeswoman Chris Creese said the test will be similar in size to Oxitec’s 2012 experiment in the Cayman Islands, where 3.3 million modified mosquitoes were released over six months, suppressing 96 percent of the targeted bugs. Oxitec says a later test in Brazil also was successful, and both countries now want larger-scale projects. But critics accused Oxitec of failing to obtain informed consent in the Caymans, saying residents weren’t told they could be bitten by a few stray females overlooked in the lab. Instead, Oxitec said only non-biting males would be released, and that even if humans were somehow bitten, no genetically modified DNA would enter their bloodstream. Florida leads underwater homes Florida cities are still among the nation’s top metro areas in the share of “underwater” homes in their communities. A list compiled by the research firm RealtyTrac puts four Florida cities among the top housing markets with seriously “underwater” homes at the end of last year. At the top of the list is Las Vegas but the Nevada gambling mecca is followed by Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Miami, Detroit and Chicago. Roughly a quarter of the homes in the Florida cities are underwater, a situation in which the loan on a home is greater than the worth of the property. Neither claim is entirely true, outside observers say. “What Oxitec is trying to spin is that it’s highly improbable that there will be negative consequences of this foreign DNA entering someone that’s bitten by an Oxitec mosquito,” said Lounibos. “I’m on their side, in that consequences are highly unlikely. But to say that there’s no genetically modified DNA that might get into a human, that’s kind of a gray matter.” Asked about these points, Creese says Oxitec has now released 70 million of its mosquitoes in several countries and received no reports of human impacts caused by bites or from the synthetic DNA, despite regulatory oversight that encourages people to report any problems. “We are confident of the safety of our mosquito, as there’s no mechanism for any adverse effect on human health. The proteins are non-toxic and non-allergenic,” she said. Oxitec should still do more to show that the synthetic DNA causes no harm when transferred into humans by its mosquitoes, said Guy Reeves, a molecular geneticist at Germany’s Max Planck Institute. To build trust in any cutting-edge science, a range of independent experts – not just the company that stands to gain or the regulatory agency involved – should have enough access to data published in peer-reviewed journals to be able to explain the specific benefits and risks, he said. “Failing to do this almost inevitably means a potential for controversy to be sustained and amplified,” said Reeves, adding that mosquito-borne diseases need more solutions. “We should not be closing down productive avenues, and genetically modified mosquitoes might be one of them.” With the FDA watching, Doyle and Oxitec’s product development manager, Derric Nimmo, checked their frustration at public meetings in November and December, repeatedly fielding the same questions from the same critics. This experiment is self-limiting, using insects engineered to kill their progeny, not make them stronger. It is contained, since Oxitec’s mosquitoes won’t breed with other species. Killing off Aedes aegypti can protect human health while eliminating an invasive species. And most Key Haven residents responded positively to a district survey about the planned field test. Using GMOs also could save money: The district spends 10 percent of its budget on Aedes aegypti, which represents less than 1 percent of the 45 mosquito species buzzing around the Keys. Key Haven resident Marilyn Smith still wasn’t persuaded. The Keys haven’t experienced a dengue outbreak in years, and no chikungunya cases have been reported here, she said. “If I knew that this was a real risk and lives could be saved, that would make sense,” Smith said. “But there are no problems. Why are we trying to fix it? Why are we being used as the experiment, the guinea pigs, just to see what happens?” If the FDA decides against the test, or the modified mosquitoes fail to work as promised, Doyle will still need to kill the bugs. “I’m convinced the only way to fight this is using the mosquitoes to fight each other,” he said.
