◄◄◄◄◄SOUTHWEST VALLEY SUPPORT MEETING NOTICE►►►►►
We began a support meeting in Goodyear last October for all of our members who live in the Southwest Valley
area, i.e., Goodyear, Avondale, Litchfield, etc., so that you could attend a meeting without having to drive clear
across the valley. Carolee, our facilitator worked hard to find a place and then that church decided we needed to
have insurance in order to continue meeting there, so she went next door to Thompson Funeral Chapel and got
us permission to have our meeting there. However, after all of this, no one has been attending this meeting.
Ten months is more than adequate time for everyone to take advantage of having this meeting near them. If we
do not see attendance pick up in the next two months at the Southwest Valley meeting, we will have no choice
but to close it, which breaks our hearts as this was for your benefit. So, if you have been planning to attend and
were excited to have a meeting closer to you but life has been getting in the way, we need you to commit now to
attending so we can keep this meeting open for you. Help us keep this meeting open for you and other
survivors that will come after you.
COLD CASE REGISTRY FOR HOMICIDES
The Phoenix Police Department now has a Cold Case Registry on line. The link is
http://phoenix.gov/police/investigations/coldcase/index.html. The second phase of this website project will
eventually include a searchable listing of cold cases with a brief synopsis of each case. Interested persons can
then send us information on the case or be routed to Silent Witness should they want to do so. Hopefully, this
will generate more tips and leads and move more cases to successful resolution. Many family members just
need to know their loved one's case is still open, and hopefully this will give them solace that the case is not
forgotten.
MAY SPEAKER INFORMATION MEETING
Our June meeting featured our chapter's Sibling Coordinator, Amanda Harris. Amanda presented on Sibling
Grief. She lost her brother Joshua in August of 1997. She shared with us how siblings feel after the murder of
their loved which can include:
●Feeling abandoned, unloved
● Feeling as if dead sibling is put on a pedastal

● Feeling survivor guilt
●Can have discipline problems at home or in school
●Act out and regress ( young child can begin bed wetting again or suck thumb etc.)
●The surviving sibling can try to take the deceased sibling's place
●Parent and child roles are often reversed as the surviving sibling takes care of the grieving parent
●Their family structure has changed. They may be the eldest child now or left without siblings
●They can feel their parent (and often parent does) build an emotional wall between them. This wall is to
protect from ever being hurt this badly again but harms surviving siblings. Express your love for them often and
remind them you are so happy to have them in your life.
Try to be loving with your surviving child or children. Be accepting and truthful regarding your emotional
pain and consistent with your parenting while grieving. Keep the lines of communication open with your
surviving children. Do not keep information that they request and or need about the investigation and or court
proceedings in language appropriate for their age.
Remember to seek help from other family members or friends when you need it. Grieving is exhausting and
yet your surviving children still need you and stability in their family life, especially after violence.
Read books on how children grieve and how to assist your child through their loss. Inform school
counselors and teachers of their loss and request their aid as well.
*Be patient with yourself. Do the best you can and forgive what you simply cannot do.

Chapter Bracelets are black and red multi-colored with “POMC” and “Always in our Hearts” (our loved ones)

Your old cell phones can be put to good use for the Relocation Project, part of Arizona Coalition for Victim
Services, in which funds are allotted for Domestic Violence Victims to relocate to a safe place. You can bring
your cell phones to any meeting. The phones are turned in for cash to fund the project.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2014: The 28th National POMC Conference will be held this year in

Rochester, Minnesota, August 14 - 17 at the Kahler Grand Hotel. Plan now to attend this wonderful event for survivors of
a homicide victim and benefit from the many informative workshops on traumatic grief, navigating the confusing and
often frustrating maze of the criminal justice system, and networking with so many other survivors and professionals
across the country. The theme is “Rebuilding Shattered Lives, Renewing Hope for Tomorrow”. The cost of the
conference is $240.00 (includes meals) and registration information is on the website now. Any chapter interested in
planning a fundraiser to help with conference funds, please email Dan at [email protected]. National website for
registration link is www.pomc.org. FYI: We just received word from the Office of Victims Of Crime that we have been
approved for Conference scholarships. The scholarship application will be on the POMC website on Monday, May 19th.
This will be the same as last year which is for the hotel only. The scholarship is for $240.00 which is for 3 nights at
$80.00 per night (You will be responsible for the remainder of hotel bill). You must be planning on staying for all 3
nights of the conference and it is on a reimbursement basis only. You must be able to pay for the hotel bill at time of
departure and send receipts into the National Office before you will be reimbursed a check for $240.00.
●SURVIVORS NEWSLETTER: The National Newsletter is going green and we are currently in the process of getting
email addresses and switching over. If you do not have a computer or access to one, you will still receive a hard copy if
you notify the National Office. There is a lot of time put in to creating, editing and assembling the Newsletter for
distribution thus we will still charge $10 for the subscription. POMC's effort to be more cost effective, generate some
income, and going green make it a logical step to take.
● ACTS OF SIMPLE KINDNESS SCHOLARSHIPS: Acts of Simple Kindness, Inc., ("ASK") provides financial
assistance for dependent children of widows and widowers under the age of 18. The financial assistance must be used to
fund a program or class within the areas of education, sports, music or the arts. Applications that are for purposes other
than these four will be discarded. For more information, please go to http://actsofsimplekindness.org/grant-program/
●DONATIONS AND SUPPORT OF NATIONAL POMC: There are many ways to help with much needed funds for
POMC including any items you buy on Amazon.com, as well as if you shop the Kroger Stores. It is very simple and does

● AUTO DONATIONS: We are encouraging all chapters and contact persons to get involved with POMC Debit
Authorization. You can now donate to NATIONAL POMC by setting up an automatic withdrawal from your bank
account to National. Contact National for a debit authorization form. This is a fast and easy way to make a donation to
National to help us help others. Your donation is withdrawn at the same time of the month each month and no amount is
too small. We appreciate your help during these difficult economic times.
●PAROLE BLOCK PROGRAM: To date this program had kept more than 1400 prisoners who committed murders
from being released early. Parole Block was begun in 1990 and all members across the United States whose loved one’s
killer is up for early release/parole consideration can file a petition with National that is sent nationwide for signatures
protesting their release.
TOPIC FORUM: POMC has a “Topic Forum” on its web site. It provides a place where survivors all over the U.S.
can communicate with each other. It’s a good place to suggest to those who aren’t able to attend monthly grief support
meetings to utilize the support. Please let your members know that it is there for additional support so that they can tell
their other family members, co-workers and friends who may be in states where we have no POMC chapters.
SECOND OPINION SERVICES: A program that provides second opinions on unsolved or complicated cases by a
national board comprised solely of experts in the medical, law enforcement and investigative fields.
MURDER IS NOT ENTERTAINMENT (MINE) PROGRAM: Through this program, POMC raises public
awareness to the insensitivity of murder as entertainment through toys, games, murder mystery weekends, drive by
shooting fashions, serial killer trading cards and anything that glamorizes violence.
BIG TURN OFF: This is an annual event, each January, in which citizens are asked to turn off their televisions for one
evening during prime time hours to protest the violence on television.
MURDER WALL: (A traveling tribute honoring the memories of murder victims). A photo album is also available
with each plaque. Currently, the cost is $75 to add your loved ones names to the Walnut Plaques that comprise the
Murder Wall. You have two pages for the photo album to add information, poetry or pictures.
SILENCED VOICES: A program begun in January 2002, which advocates for the vigorous investigation and
prosecution of those responsible for the murder of abused children. The first case was that of Brandi Conley. POMC was
instrumental in bringing charges against her parents.

Whoever said "A picture is worth a thousand words" was underestimating the power of image.
Last week I saw a video clip called Get Service.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfeXxbgCVE) that continues to replay in my mind. In the
opening scene, a man was backing out of his driveway as a young boy skateboarded across the
entrance causing him to slam on his brakes and setting the stage for a bad mood morning. Next
he was slowed in traffic and complained about that. As he pulled into the parking lot for a coffee
shop, a lady made a quick move and got the parking place he wanted. Of course in keeping with
the theme of his testy mood, inside he found a long line of seemingly indecisive customers,
moving slowly. One even cut in front of him for an order add on! The coffee shop staff was
very friendly and after he ordered told him there would be a short wait due to the busyness.
All the while, he continued to fume at the many inconveniences in his life -- all caused by others.
As he waited for his custom coffee, a tall man in dark glasses approached him and handed him a
glasses case with the words "Get Service" printed on the outside. "Grumpy" opened the case and
put on the glasses...whoa!
The world he saw through those lenses was quite different, so much so that at first he refused to
look...and then he did! For every person he saw, he also saw a few words that described what
was really going on in their life...The young man serving coffee: "struggling with addiction"; a
man reading the want ads, "just lost job"; a lady with two small kids outside the coffee shop
"works two jobs to feed her kids": the woman who beat him into the parking space "grieving
death of best friend"; a teen standing on the side of street "ran away from home 3 days ago", and
on it went throughout the day. As he was pulling in his driveway, he saw the boy on the
skateboard again - "just needs someone to care".
How easy it is to see someone doing something other than we want them to do and respond with
our impatience, judgment and even anger...without giving them the benefit of doubt. Consider
this, what one person is complaining about, another is praying for.
I am reminded by a quote that is attributed to many people ranging from Plato to modern
novelists. "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle and struggling with
something."
Most people are masters of disguise making it impossible for us to know the full story of what is
happening in their lives. In the meantime, for the sake of humanity and in kindness and
compassion to all, imagine they are struggling and doing what they can at the time.
May healing prevail.

The Nature of Grief
The pain oozes from my broken heart, running free
like sap escaping a wounded tree.
The tears my swollen eyes release
drain away life's energy.
My anger has volcanic force,
as it runs its heated course.
The what ifs ramble through my mind,
if only we could change all time.
