County Attorney, Bill Montgomery, who will speak
about the role of his office as it relates to the
prosecution and answer your questions. Mr.
Montgomery has been involved with crime victims'
rights issues for many years and worked with the
Crime Victims Legal Assistance Project at one time.
He serves on the board of Arizona Voice for Crime
Victims as well and has spoken at several of our
chapter events.

not-guilty. We are so sorry for Zach's family and friends.

COLD CASE REGISTRY FOR HOMICIDES
The Phoenix Police Department now has a Cold Case Registry on line. The link is
http://phoenix.gov/police/investigations/coldcase/index.html. The second phase of this website project will
eventually include a searchable listing of cold cases with a brief synopsis of each case. Interested persons can
then send us information on the case or be routed to Silent Witness should they want to do so. Hopefully, this
will generate more tips and leads and move more cases to successful resolution. Many family members just
need to know their loved one's case is still open, and hopefully, give them solace that the case is not forgotten.
SPEAKER INFORMATION MEETING -- HOMICDE AFTERMATH
Our speaker meeting this month featured a presentation on Homicide: A Compounded and Complicated
Grief Process, to help our members learn more about traumatic grief, coping skills to utilize on this long and
difficult journey in the aftermath of murder and what it leaves behind for the families dealing with it. Also
provided were tips on self care during the stress of this trauma on our health and overall well being.
We also had someone from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office Victim Services as well as US Attorney's
Office Victim Services at the meeting to learn more about the issues survivors face to assist them in their jobs
serving crime victims.
Our speaker at the next meeting (August 13) will be Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. Please
note on the front of the newsletter a new speaker meeting location: Mountain View Police Precinct, 2075 East
Maryland, Phoenix. We feel the added security of being in a police station will be a better choice for our
meetings.

NATIONAL POMC INFORMATION
☺ CINCINNATI OHIO OFFICE☺
● NATIONAL CONFERENCE: The 27th National Conference will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio on August
15-18, 2013. The theme is “Open Hearts, Sharing Hope with Trusted Friends… We Remember Them.” It will
be at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza Hotel. The cost of the conference is $230.00. More information is
on the website along with registration forms. If anyone is planning on coming to Cincinnati on days before the
conference, the hotel is sold out and does not have extra rooms. Please contact Bev at [email protected] so
she can work with you to make arrangements at another hotel in the area who have overflow rooms.
●2014 POMC NATIONAL CONFERENCE: National is currently in the planning stages for next year's
conference which is going to be held in Rochester, Minnesota. If you would like to volunteer and be part of the
national committee, please contact Dan Levey or Bev Warnock.
● COLD CASE WEBSITE FOR UNSOLVED CASES: Bill Jensen is working to develop a new website for
cold cases. There are an estimated 5,000 murders that go unsolved in the United States each year. It seems like
I have written a lot of unsolved crime stories but when I was writing full time, I could maybe get to 40 a year,
maybe 4 in depth. That was before social media and web 2.0 and everyone carrying around a smart phone with
a camera, everyone having access to millions of bits of data.
This new site will be the clearing house information on unsolved murders and missing persons. It will be a
place for law enforcement, families and concerned citizens to gather, trade information and stories and more
importantly, solve crimes. It will be the nation's first unsolved murders and missing persons database. There
are 200,000 unsolved murders in the US since 1980. And there is no central database available to the publicuntil now. We are developing new software to crawl the web and capture every mention of the murder online,
from a random comment on a blog to a post on social network.
We are currently building the site and the app. Having worked for close to 10 years with POMC, I wanted to
reach out to people who have been waiting for the technology to catch up in this area. The reason no one has
built something like this is frankly, it is not a money making venture. I am using my own personal savings to
launch this. The goal is not to only solve crimes but also to keep the conversation going - to not have to wait
for a five year anniversary of a murder for people to talk about it again. What we are looking for right now is
feedback from family members of what they would like to see on the site.

● ACTS OF SIMPLE KINDNESS SCHOLARSHIPS: Acts of Simple Kindness, Inc., ("ASK") provides
financial assistance for dependent children of widows and widowers under the age of 18. The financial
assistance must be used to fund a program or class within the areas of education, sports, music or the arts.
Applications that are for purposes other than these four will be discarded. For more information, please go to

THE COURAGE TO GRIEVE 2013
(A Weekend Retreat of Hope and Healing in the Pines)
October 18 - 20 in beautiful PINE, ARIZONA
Our chapter is hosting our twentieth, self-help, rewarding weekend of The Courage To Grieve,
to face the many overwhelming and difficult emotions that are the aftermath of murder and are
often compounded by the intrusion and frustration of the judicial process. Beneath the explosive
emotions of rage, hate, and revenge lay the more primary feelings of pain, fear and helplessness.
Unresolved, these emotions can cause survivors to feel they are losing their minds. The isolation
survivors feel from those who will not or cannot deal with the impact of the loss, leave survivors
alone with their grief or discourage them from grieving at all. An integral part of this weekend will
be an examination of love, tenderness and affection, relaxation techniques and the encouragement
to move forward, uncover and experience within a safe environment of others who truly
understand. The retreat has been designed to influence the reconstruction of a new life -- a life that
has a renewed sense of purpose, though forever changed by murder.
The weekend begins with dinner on Friday night. Those attending will all meet at the cabin in
Pine at 5:00 p.m. with introductions to the group. This cabin was built by the Fornoffs (Roger and
Carol) specifically for retreats; their daughter, Christy Ann, was killed in Tempe in 1984 while
collecting money for her newspaper delivery route. Our chapter has hosted 18 retreats at the
Fornoff’s cabin in the beautiful and peaceful pines surrounding it.
The retreat cost is $150 and includes all meals while at the cabin, home-cooked and served
family style as if you were at home. Roger is a very good cook and he loves doing so. Space is
limited to 19, so reserve your spot now. Scholarships are available so do not let money be a factor
in your decision to participate. However, a $25 deposit is required if you apply for a scholarship
and will be refunded to you after your participation that weekend.
Many of those who have attended the weekend retreats will tell you, though it is hard emotional
work, it is very beneficial and rewarding. Husbands and wives, as well as siblings, should attend
together and learn that while we each grieve differently and had our own relationship with our
loved ones, we all share the pain and the trauma of losing a loved one to murder.

*This year's event will be free of charge thanks to the generosity of the Chandler Police
Department RICO funds. Special Guest Speaker will be John Gillis of the Maricopa
County Attorney's Office Victim Services Division. John has a distinguished career in
Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice and Interim Chief of Police Dave Neuman of the
Chandler Police Department.
We will also have an honor guard and bird release as well as a teddy bear raffle.
Members may bring teddy bears dressed to represent a hobby or something their
loved one liked so we can raffle them off to participating attendees. We will have a
catered picnic dinner immediately following our event. There will also be a Moon
Bounce for the children and volleyball, horseshoes which are available at the park.
You will also get wristbands that allow you free rides in the amusement park after the
event ends.
