The month of love is upon us again and it gives us pause to wonder what that’s all about. It will mean different things to each of us but I suspect that we all have a love for our beloved Porsches. Recently I’ve been reminded about how the Suncoast Porsche Club feels like family to many of our members. Do you feel that way? I joined PCA in 2003 and after volunteering for many things and attending many events, I agreed with those in the conversation that, yes, I do feel like the club has a familial feeling to it. And this is from a left-brained non-touchy-feely kinda girl. I look forward to our events and seeing friends I’ve known for a while and hope there may be new members that will become friends. When someone falls ill or has an upsetting event in their family, I am concerned. Hmm. Yes, that feels like family. INSIDE THIS ISSUE OF PORSCHE Profile Wrapping up the holiday season 2015 started off with a bang with autocross (AX) at the Brooksville Tampa Bay Airport. If you’ve been thinking about testing out your car in a safe environment, our next autocross is in March at the DeSoto Speedway. AX was followed by our time-honored tradition of launching the New Year at the Colonnade in Tampa. We had a record number this year and fun was had by all. 48 Hours at Sebring was another exhilarating event featuring the best Club Racing event in the world! Another sold-out race with hundreds of volunteers having as much fun as those who are behind the wheel on the track! In its 22nd year, this race is run by a large committee with directors from the Suncoast and Gold Coast regions who work all year to make sure it is operated professionally and by PCA National standards. Grant Painter is the Co-Chair representing Suncoast and is doing a phenomenal job in his first year! If you volunteered, you know what I’m talking about. (BTW – thank you!!) Thank you to the awesome directors from the Suncoast Region who are on the committee. SCHEDULE OF By MISSY TEASLEY February is a special month. The holidays are behind us. The new year, 2015, has arrived. All holidays are special. However, it just seems that Valentine’s Day is extra special with the flowers, candy and cards, each chosen for just one person and one person only. Our Porsche Brunch Bunch hit a home run with the December gathering at Jackson’s Bistro. We welcomed four couples new to the area and new to Suncoast. It was a time to meet and greet and get to know our new club members. Thanks to all those who attended this new-to-ourclub event, and thanks to Jackson’s, who did not rush us at all and provided us with a delicious feast. January was planning time for the board. We met and have so many fun things planned for the year 2015. I am proud to be part of a board that has so many enthusiastic and hard-working members. Check out the calendar of events and upcoming activities. Date Your Porsche Night in January at the Colonnade has become sort of a tradition and was a great way to start 2015. Our February 18 Date Your Porsche Night has been moved to Bahama Breeze in Tampa, the venue scheduled originally for March. I will start a new RSVP list, so if you plan to attend, email me at [email protected]. Stay tuned for our March location. I like to give the restaurant an approximate number of folks attending. This helps the wait staff and is very much appreciated by the kitchen staff as well. I list the time at 7 p.m., however, if you come early, maybe for happy hour, that is fine. February 21 – 22 will be a fun time for those attending the weekend of DE. If you have not participated in the DE activities, I urge you to do so. There is so much going on around the track. Just go down and watch what’s going on and get involved yourself. You won’t regret it. And don’t forget Porsches & Polo on February 22 at the Sarasota Polo Grounds. Gates open at 11 a.m. but you need to RSVP to Margharita at 941 921-8007 or email her at [email protected] for a wristband to be mailed to you in time for you to attend. Hope those of you who attended the 48 Hours at Sebring had a great time. How the time flew and how great it was to see our Porsche friends from the cold areas. Welcome back to our northern Porsche pals. Happy Valentine’s Day to all! By AMY RICHES Each year in November the Suncoast Region hosts a day of education and training for advanced drivers who have been participating in our track events and gained the experience necessary to become an Instructor; followed by a regular DE day on Sunday that is open to all. For this past event we extended it from 1 to 2 days of track time for our solo and instructor level drivers. The extra day was filled with lots of track time, a track walk and additional education. Congratulations to all of our new instructors and I look forward to seeing each of you out there. The Instructor weekend is also the event when we kick out (I mean graciously thank) the current Chief Track Instructor (CTI) and sucker in (I mean graciously welcome) the new CTI. So it was goodbye to Grant and hello to me! Oh, and by the way, for those who haven’t noticed, I am a girl and a mom, therefore I am very capable and happy to boss people around. And, yes, boys and girls, you still have to teach the new line! Grant was a fantastic CTI and we are all very grateful for all he has done for our DE program. Undisputedly, some of what he has implemented has helped to increase the knowledge base of our drivers as well as keeping our events safe. We will continue to offer as many educational opportunities as possible in our future events. Coming Up On February 21 and 22, we will be at Sebring for the first time this year. If you have never been to a Drivers Education (DE) event, here is your chance. If you are a DE diehard, welcome back. If you are a new attendee, you will be amazed, inspired, thrilled, and grinning for weeks from the experience. Check out the information on our website, suncoastpca.org, and then sign up on Clubregistration.net. Feel free to contact me and I will work on persuading you to participate and will be happy answer any questions you have. P.S. each month my photo will be of me sitting in a different car. If you are the first person to email me with the correct make and specific model, your next DE is on me! The winner and answer will be in my next article. See ya at the track! Thoughts From a Racer on Kart4Kids By Patrick Long “Looking ahead to 2015 and our 4th Annual All Children’s karting event, we are moving one step closer to our ultimate goal of becoming the place to be on the Sunday morning after the 12 Hours of Sebring. From the get-go, the idea has been to raise money in memory of Dan Wheldon, for All Children’s Hospital. While we don’t carry his name on our event headline, Dan was a St. Pete resident, an avid karter and a huge donor to All Children’s, and we feel it’s a good tradition to continue on. “I first met Dan in the late 1990s when we were both aspiring racing drivers, racing karts. To this day, there’s not a racing weekend that goes by where Dan’s name doesn’t come up. This event has so much meaning to so many different people, but on a personal level it has become a big focus of what I think about and work on outside of my driving career. “The support that we received in 2014 put us into a legitimate space as one of the real motorsport charity events in North America, and I really think the sky is the limit as far as what we can create in the future. “The reason I say that is because we have always remained authentic and let this brand grow into what it wants to become. Rather than promising the world and having to meet those expectations, we have let individuals from the local PCA Suncoast Region and racing supporters from the Tampa Bay area put the word out and reach into their own PORSCHE PROFILE • FEBRUARY 2015 pockets. I just can’t be more grateful to everybody as to where this event has come from, where it is now, and where I see it going in the future. “I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us. To the people who haven’t been out, I say bring your helmet and your smiles and your family and let’s race for a good cause and put on a good show.” 13 No. 1 hotel in Sebring by Trip Advisor The closest hotel to Sebring International Raceway! Photo by Russ Lowrey. 15 Suncoast PCA Celebrates at Holiday Gala 2014: Suncoast PCA – As I See It By Geo Wienhold As I see it, it all comes down to this: an accumulation of a year of Porsche fun, competition, memorable drives, and the opportunity to connect with the most important aspect of being a member of Suncoast PCA - the people (it’s also the cars). We chase each other around little orange cones set up in a manner that challenges the best of us for a fast time. In doing so, we leave with a better understanding of just how remarkable our Porsches are, and how to become a better driver. The best part is that we leave these autocross events with a huge smile, Porsche style. For those of us who want to ‘kick it up a notch,’ we have our ‘home track,’ Sebring. There, our DE instructors give us their time and talent to help us enjoy our Porsches in a high-speed safe environment. Another Porsche smile. Plus, we sure do know how to party and have fun with our Porsches: road trips; rallies; tastings. We even date our Porsches and spiff them up for a worthy cause. There is something for all of us to enjoy. Another Porsche smile! Let’s thank everyone who makes Suncoast PCA our Porsche club. Let’s look forward to all the tall tales, consumption of mass quantities of calories, enjoying the exciting drives, going places to explore and to spend time with the friends we’ve met. We will do it again this year - safe driving! 16 Photos by Geo Wienhold By Mike Mackenzie, Vice President For the second year, our Holiday Gala was held at The St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts. Our thanks go to the museum for again hosting us for this annual event at its beautiful facility. This year, the weather was perfect and the downtown traffic was manageable. Social Chair Missy Teasley did a great job of coordinating the event and making sure every aspect of the evening was perfect! With the cooperation of the weather, the cocktail hour was held on the patio and it was a great hour of socializing with old friends and meeting new ones. An adult beverage or two may have been consumed, but, of course, I was unaware of that! The food part of the evening started with a fabulous pasta bar followed by a buffet offering mouth-watering fare that had something for everybody. As I finished my meal, I noticed a long line forming beside my seat. Naturally, I was curious but I should have known that Bill Riley announced the Scheiss an der Wand award. it was the dessert line! What a fabulous array of desserts! This event is primarily a social event, but we do like to review the accomplishments of the past year and present deserving members with awards for their service. President Jill Perry briefly reviewed the highlights of 2014, noting that our 54th anniversary as a PCA region occurs on January 23, 2015, and then noted the following interesting facts about 2014: • 11 issues of Porsche Profile were published, with distribution of about 16,000 to members, advertisers and our three great dealerships; • 15 days of Drivers Education, many of which were completely sold out; • 10 days of Autocross, many of which were sold out; And a great time was had by all! Visit SuncoastPCA.org for news, events and updates! Rick Meyer. • 22 Social Events, again with many sold out. In total, our region had a total of 90 events for our members to enjoy! As you might recall (actually, I had to look it up), in 2013 our region raised over $36,500 for charity; Jill announced that in 2014, that number was more than $83,000.00 and, again, not a single penny of that total came from the treasury of the region! Hats off to our Charitable Chair David Bassett and his legion of volunteers for a tremendous year of events that benefitted the charities we support. Last year when our outgoing President Page Obenshain introduced Jill Perry as the incoming President, she had the shortest acceptance speech ever when she stood, thanked Page for his kind introduction, and for her speech said “I hope I don’t screw anything up.” With the accomplishments of the region in 2014, her wish was definitely granted! Brian West. John Vita. The Teasleys flank Jill. One of the highlights of the Gala every year is the presentation of awards to deserving Suncoast members. For 2014, the following awards were announced: Most Enthusiastic New Member: Russ Lowrey jumped in with both feet in helping with events. He arrived early to setup, worked during the event to help in any way he could Mike O’Donnell. From left, Russ Lowrey, Jill Perry, Mike Mackenzie. and stayed late to clean up. He was always upbeat and enjoyed our events. Congratulations, Russ! 2014 Appreciation Award: This year was our second year of offering the TRSS Teen Driving School, Brian West worked tirelessly before and during the event and was exemplary in his ability to work together to achieve a common goal. For his leadership, a 2014 Appreciation award was presented to Brian. 2014 Appreciation Award: Our Drivers Education program is considered one of the best in PCA, and it is a program that requires significant behind the scenes work to operate. Rick Meyer, our Registrar, is a tireless worker, and is a master at finding creative solutions to difficult problems. While he’s not out front very much, he makes the wheels go around. In recognition of his dedication and creativity, an Appreciation award was presented to Rick. Will Reilly. Tom Heinz. PORSCHE PROFILE • FEBRUARY 2015 Continued on page 21 17 Focus On: Amy Riches When Alicia asked me to write an article for Porsche Profile about myself, I thought, “Yuck. I hate writing about myself.” After some procrastination and reflection, I thought why did I get involved with the Porsche Club? It certainly wasn’t to write articles. It’s like being back in school and having a homework assignment. Despite being a girl, I have loved cars since I was a teenager, especially Porsches, and I love people. If you put those two things together, what do you have? The Suncoast Region of the Porsche Club of America. It’s full of people who love Porsches and love hanging out together. I soon realized I had found my own little Utopia - Suncoast DE. It’s full of people who love cars, especially Porsches, and, even better, they loved driving them - FAST!! I have developed some wonderful friendships through the Porsche Club. At the end of the day, after your family, your friends are what make life worth living. Okay, I’ll admit a couple of cool Porsches sitting in the garage doesn’t hurt, either. I always look forward to heading off to Sebring with my little Targa car (that’s what we call it) in tow to the next Drivers Education (DE) session. I get excited knowing that I am going to have a fantastic weekend of driving, apart from the part where I get yelled at by Gavin because I missed an apex by three inches. But what I really look forward to is getting to catch up with all of my old friends, 18 Chief Track Instructor many of whom have become like family to me. So now for a little history. I have been actively involved in the Suncoast PCA for the last 10 years, much of that time serving as the DE register. Apparently, I was much nicer than our current registrar, Rick Meyer, as many of you guys learned how to butter me up to get paired with your favorite students. I’ve recently taken over my new position as DE Chief Track Instructor. I have some really big shoes to fill (if you know Grant, then you’ve figured out that is obviously not a literal statement). I’m excited to drive forward from where Grant left off, continuing to improve our DE program so that everyone from novice to instructor goes home at the end of the day having had a great time and feeling they learned something new. And don’t be surprised if you hear me using my stern “mom” voice to maintain our high safety standards. Amy on a trip to Europe. Visit SuncoastPCA.org for news, events and updates! Photos provided by Amy Riches Amy with her Targa Car. Speaking of my mom voice, my other loves in life (except for Gavin; he’s the one always telling you what to do if your car misbehaves on the track), are my three children Meagan (21), Lindsey (19) and Ian (14). Of course, I can’t forget the dogs Pete and Kiwi who are very much part of our family. As is the case with all moms, I am very proud of my kids and love spending time with them. They’ve gotten used to having Porsche posters all over the house, having to drink out of Porsche cups, and me always running around in some sort of Porsche apparel. Any suggestions that I’m Porsche obsessed is completely unfounded. I spend my days helping run our company, Autoquest. No surprise here. We service, upgrade, and sell Porsches. Holiday Gala from page 17 Most Enthusiastic Family: This family originally joined in February 2008 and they quickly began personally recruiting many members even to the point of selling them cars and getting them to join! They’ve referred people to dealerships to purchase cars and then recruited them to be members. They seek and embrace new members and include them in activities and events and are always willing to jump in and help whenever they can. The 2014 Most Enthusiastic Family was presented to Bob and Missy Teasley. President’s Award: Our President admitted that this award was a tough one this year as we are so fortunate to have so many members who go above and beyond whatever is asked of them. A quote from the event that this person organized and ran: “I thought it was a great event, from organization to execution. If there was ever an all-star group for an event like this, you are it! The expertise was exquisite, the willingness was wonderful and the attitude was magnificent!” As President, Jill thought the event was covered but this person was aware that it was not. This person stepped up to the plate and organized the event, organized a host of volunteers with leadership skills and delivered a first class event with excellent evaluations. In recognition of the extra effort and results of the 2014 TRSS Teen Driving School. the 2014 President’s Award was presented to John Vita. Appreciation Awards: In recognition of their generous support of our Region, members, and activities a 2014 Appreciation Award was presented to each of our local dealers: the award to Bert Smith Porsche was presented to Mike O’Donnell; the award to Motorsports by Reeves was presented to Will Reilly, and the award to Suncoast Motorsports was presented to Tom Heinz. We are so fortunate to have not 1, not 2, but 3 dealers in our region that provide a huge amount of support to our PORSCHE PROFILE • FEBRUARY 2015 activities. It is very gratifying that we have active members of the region that are employed by these 3 dealers. We thank them very much. President Perry announced that Andy de Ganahl was elected to the Drivers Ed Hall of Fame at the Instructor’s Dinner on November 7 in Sebring. Congratulations to Andy! Scheiss an der Wand Award: The final presentation of the evening was made by longtime member Bill Riley (and multiple-time winner of this award) who presented the infamous Scheiss an der Wand (Screw Up of the Year) award. This award was presented to our illustrious former Chief Track Instructor and current co-chairman of 48 Hours at Sebring Grant Painter. (Unfortunately Grant wasn’t present to be embarrassed in person!) Way to go Grant! The evening continued and concluded with dancing to the tunes of Calamity Jane. Suncoast Region does know how to put on a PARTY! 21 Focus On from page 18 Yes, we race them as well. In addition, we traipse off to Germany every couple years so that we can take delivery of a new Porsche at the factory, as opposed to picking one up at the dealership like most normal people. We then drive as many mountain passes and race tracks throughout Europe as possible before heading back home. I think 4,000+ miles in 11 days is our record so far. I have owned a lot of really cool Porsches, from a Boxster S to a GT3 RS 4.0 with a Cayenne and Panamera thrown in for variety. But my favorite Porsche is a 2007 GT3 RS affectionately known as Targa Car. It’s called this because in its early life it took a couple of very long airplane rides to New Zealand to compete in the Targa New Zealand Rally. When we got a new Targa car (2011 Cup Car), the old car became my 22 Gavin at a New Zealand Targa Rally in 2012. track car and I love it. We have upgraded it to a 3.9 L engine along with a few other mods, Exe-tc suspension, etc. The next time it passes you on the track, you may think that’s a seriously quick car, but don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone you “just got passed by a girl.” Can you guess what my favorite Porsche thing to do is? No, it’s not Date Your Porsche Night, or showing my Porsche at a concours event, and it’s not Visit SuncoastPCA.org for news, events and updates! even taking European delivery of a bright shiny new Porsche. And as surprising as this is, it’s not taking my Targa Car to the track, although that’s a close second. My favorite thing to do with a Porsche is going to New Zealand to compete in the Targa Rally. Many of you have never done this so you just have to take my word for it; it’s the most exciting thing you can ever do in a Porsche. If any of you want to come along the next time we go, you’re very welcome. So for those who haven’t met me in person, next time you’re at the track or see me at a social, introduce yourself. Don’t be surprised if you get a big hug like I’m your long lost sister. You’ll get used to it.
