Prayers for the World Church Christian Aid produces each year a brochure entitled 'Count Your Blessings'. It encourages us with a sentence for each day of Lent to give a small sum to Christian Aid in response to our own blessings. For example, when we 'run the tap' to get hot water to give 10p for each time we do that on the chosen day, remembering those who cannot just run clean water. Let us pray for the work of Christian Aid and the church partners overseas who administer the funds, and for our response to the needs of the poor in whatever way. 3 Please take your bulletin home Seekers’ Song Jesus bids us shine with a pure, clear light, like a little candle burning in the night. In this world is darkness; so let us shine, you in your small corner, and I in mine. Jesus bids us shine, then, for all around, many kinds of darkness in the world are found sin, and want, and sorrow; so we must shine, you in your small corner, and I in mine. Words: Susan Warner (1819-85) Sung Communion Anthem When to the temple Mary went - Johannes Eccard (1553-1611) When to the temple Mary went And brought the Holy Child. Him did the aged Simeon see, As it had been revealed. He took up Jesus in his arms And, blessing God, he said: “In peace I now depart, My Saviour having seen, The Hope of Israel, The Light of men”. Help now thy servants, gracious Lord, That we may ever be, As once the faithful Simeon was, Rejoicing but in thee; And when we must from earth departure take, May gently fall asleep And with thee wake. Translated from the German by J Troutbeck (1832-99) 4 Please take your bulletin home Psalm 111 Choir: I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. All: I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. Choir: O praise the Lord, I will praise the Lord with my whole heart: in the company of the upright and among the congregation. The works of the Lord are great: and studied by all who take delight in them. All: I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. Choir: His deeds are majestic & glorious and his righteousness stands for ever. His marvellous acts have won him a name to be remembered: the Lord is gracious and merciful. He gives food to those that fear him he remembers his covenant for ever. All: I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. Choir: He showed his people the power of his acts in giving them the heritage of the heathen. The works of his hands are faithful and just and all his commandments are sure; they stand firm for ever and ever: they are done in faithfulness and in truth. All: I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. Choir: He sent redemption to his people, he ordained his covenant for ever: holy is his name and worthy to be feared. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and of good understanding are those that keep his commandments: his praise shall endure for ever. All: I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. 5 Please take your bulletin home Evensong Processional Hymn When candles are lighted on Candlemas Day the dark is behind us and spring’s on the way. A glory dawns in every dark place, the light of Christ, the fullness of grace. The kings have departed, the shepherds have gone, the child and his parents are left on their own. A glory dawns… They go to the temple, obeying the law and offer two pigeons, the gift of the poor. A glory dawns… But Anna and Simeon recognise there the Christ-child who came at the turn of the year. A glory dawns… The old who have suffered and waited so long see hope for the world as they welcome the young. A glory dawns… They gaze at God’s wonderful answer to prayer, the joy of the Jews and the Gentiles’ desire. A glory dawns… The candles invite us to praise and to pray when Christmas greets Easter on Candlemas Day. A glory dawns… Words by Elizabeth Cosnett b.1936 6 Please take your bulletin home Evensong Chants Psalm 122 Psalm 132: 1-7 Psalm 132:8-19 & Gloria Magnificat Nunc Dimittis Evensong Anthem Phos Hilaron – Alexander Flood (b.1977) O light serene of God the Father’s glory, To you, O Christ, we sing And with the evening star, at hour of sunset Our worship bring. To Father, Son and God’s most Holy Spirit, Eternal praise. O Christ, who gave your life, the world gives glory And thanks to you. Words: Athenogenes (d.c.305) tr. Stanbrook Abbey 7 Please take your bulletin home Evensong Hymn Fairest Lord Jesus, Lord of all creation, Jesus, of God and man the Son; you will I cherish, you will I honour, you are my soul’s delight and crown. Fair are the rivers, meadows and forests clothed in the fresh green robes of spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, he makes the saddest heart to sing. Fair is the sunrise, starlight and moonlight spreading their glory across the sky; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines clearer, than all the heavenly hosts on high. All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly, Jesus, my Lord, in you I see; None can be nearer, fairer or dearer, than you, my Saviour, are to me. Words German trad tr.
