MUSIC AND DANCE ACAEMY (SSVT-MDA)
SSVT Music & Dance Academy (MDA) plays a
vital role in the preservation, promotion and
dissemination of Indian Arts and culture. The aim of
the MDA is to develop ways and means by which the
basic cultural and aesthetic values and perceptions
remain active and dynamic among the younger
generation. Since its inception in 2004, our Music &
Dance Academy has been continuously striving for
excellence. From a handful of 20, today we have
nearly 200 students enrolled in various fields of arts.
We also take pride in having a faculty of excellent
reputed teachers.

Parasu Kalyan, an upcoming
Bhakti artist in Singapore, has
been performing on many
stages across various temples in
Singapore. His albums 'Bhakthi
Alai' & 'Irumudiyai Sumandhu
Vandhen' were released in
Singapore in 2014 and were
received very well.
Parasu Kalyan has lent his voice for music directors in
Singapore, India, Malaysia, Canada etc for private
albums & films. He has sung for Tamil films like 'Veeraya',
'Anandham Anandhame', 'Maska' etc. as well.
Parasu hails from Chennai, India and is in Singapore
since 2008. He works in a global IT company as a
Regional Service Delivery Manager.

Grandson of Tamil Composer
Brahmashri Papanasam Sivan.
He commenced music training at a
very young age with his mother Dr.
Rukmini Ramani (daughter of
Papanasam Sivan). Subsequently
was under the tutelage of Dr.S.Ramanathan. He has
also learnt from Calcutta K.S.Krishnamurthy and
Bombay Ramachandran and has been a disciple of
Palghat K.V.Narayanaswamy for over 17 years. He is
presently learning from Vidwan Sri.P.S.Narayanaswamy.
He is a Grade ‘A' Vocal artist of All Indian Radio,
Chennai. He had performed in major Sabhas all over
India and abroad. He has received many awards
including “Isai Peroli” conferred by Karthik Fine
Arts,Chennai. Ashok Ramani is the founder director of
Sivan Arts Academy.

Over the years, he has travelled almost all over the world
including US, UK, Australia, Europe, Singapore, Middle East,
etc. He is one the top ranking violinist. He is rated A-top by All
India Radio (AIR) and Chennai Doordarshan. He has served
as a violin artiste in AIR, Trichy from 1978 to 2003.
“Kalaimaamani” award from the Government of Tamilnadu
and “Sangeeth Natak Academy” award from the
Government of India are a few of his significant
achievements.
Nagai Sriram (Rangasami Sriram)
A disciple of his grandmother Smt. R. Komalavalli and Vidwan
Kalaimaamani Sri.Nagai R. Muralidharan. Starting his violin
career from the age of 12,he has accompanied various
leading artists and has travelled several places within India
and abroad, including US, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia,
etc. He is a much sought after violinist of the day. All India
Radio (AIR) and Chennai Doordarshan rates him as an A—
grade artist. He is the titleholder of numerous awards. Few
notable ones are “Shanmuga Sangeetha Siroanmani” award
from Shanmuganandha,Mumbai; “Yuva kala Bharathi”
award from Bharat Kalachar, Chennai.

Harikesanallur Muthiah Bagavathar, started learning
Carnatic music from the age of 4 years. They gave their
first concert at Rajamundry, A.P at the age of 7.
Both are engineering graduates and have taken up
Carnatic music as their profession and are currently the
disciples of Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. R.Vedavalli.
Both have attended a three year advanced course in
Carnatic music conducted by the Music Academy.
They have given concerts all over India and also at
Music Academy, Chennai this year.

TEMPLE OF FINE ARTS
It was in 1981 that Swamiji lit a
lamp
to
symbolise
the
beginning of something very
beautiful for the arts, especially
music and dance. In the
preceding years, he had
brought
together
two
extraordinary dancing couples
- Gopal and Radha Shetty and Sivadas and his spouse
Vatsala - who were the main forces in creating
awareness and appreciation of Indian classical dance.
The sanctuary for the arts was founded by His Holiness
Swami Shantanand Saraswathi. Many dance styles are
offered at TFA, which are Bharathanatyam, Odissi,
Kuchipudi, Contemporary, Kathat and Bollywood. TFA
offers courses for Hindustani and Karnatic music. These
includes vacals, violin, veena, mridangam, tabla, sitar,
flute, guitar and piano which following the ABRSM
syllabus.

SHYAMA
Registered in 2004 as a non-profit organisation under
ROS, SYAMA has grown substantially. Our objective is to
grow Singapore into a vibrant city of arts, by involving
youth actively into arts education. SYAMA is focused on
producing quality music concerts/performances.
SYAMA has successfully staged many successful
performances – ‘Different Strokes’ , ‘Arohanam’ – a
music orchestration, ‘Prahlad’ – a musical, ‘Bliss’- a
dance performance and ‘Daasaru’ – A dance theatre,
Santh mela, ‘Devadasi and the Saint’ – a dance ballet,
A Carnatic Musical in 2012, ‘Living Legends’ and
‘Tajmahal’ in 2013 and 'Nothing but Strings' in 2014.
We also provide Arts Education Programmes in Music
thorough our Academy. SYAMA Academy has 4
qualified teachers imparting training in Carnatic and
Hindustani vocal, violin, mridangam, keyboard, Veena
and flute.

Roshini
Initiated
into
bharatanatyam at the age of six,
Roshni was trained by Kalakshetra
alumnus, Madhavi Muthu, at the
Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society,
and performed her solo dance
debut at the age of 13. She
subsequently studied with former Kalakshetra senior
teacher and Singapore cultural medallion recipient,
Neila Sathyalingam and has expanded her repertoire
with many choreographers.
Roshni has performed with Neila Sathyalingam’s
Apsaras dance company in group and solo
performances in Singapore and abroad and in dance
productions of the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society,
including lead roles in their performances at the Music
academy and at Kalakshetra in Chennai. She
presented a solo dance for En Anubhavam, as part of
the Esplanade’s 10th Anniversary celebrations.
Her solo dance productions, Krishna Krida, Maya and
One Light were very well received. She conceptualized
and performed Rasa with Girish Panicker. She has also
performed these repertoires in Chennai for the Music
and Dance Festival. Roshni is an engaging performer
whose inimitable dance style brings freshness and
elegance to this ancient classical dance form.

The brothers hail from
Karavadi

Andhra Pradesh. They belong to a great family of
musicians, a family, which preserved and fostered the
art of Nadhaswaram playing for the past 300 years, in
Andhra Pradesh. This privileged sibling duo had the rare
opportunity of getting trained in this art at a very young
age, under the able tutelage of their own maternal
grandfather, Dr. Sheik Chinna Moulana their preceptor.
They have received many awards and accolades such
as “Nadhaswara Nadhamani, “Naadhas Chudar” and
many others. They are also A Top graded artists of All
India Radio and Dhoordharshan. They have travelled
widely through out the world. Currently duo are the
Aasthana Vidhvans of Thirumala Sri Thirupathi
Devasthanam.

VEENA CONCERT
Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh comes from a lineage of
musicians who have been practicing Carnatic music
for the last six generations. She started playing the
Veena at the age of 3. Her mother Lalgudi Smt. R.
Rajalakshmi (sister of the Violin legend Shri. Lalgudi G.
Jayaraman) was her first guide. Soon after, Jayanthi
began living with her aunt Smt.Padmavathy
Ananthagopalan who instilled great values of tradition,
discipline and ethics in Jayanthi's music and personality
through intense teaching and training. Jayanthi began
performing at the age of 15 and won several
accolades and awards along her career. She was then
blessed with the rare opportunity to train under Veena
wizard Dr. S.Balachander with whom she also had the
privilege to perform.

Alepey Venkatesan is

senior
vocalists in the circuit

South
Indian
Classical Music. He is
the last direct disciple
of

Late
Shri
Ariyakudi
Ramanuja
Iyengar, the doyen of
Carnatic Music.
The all time great
Mridangam
maestro
Shri. Palghat Mani Iyer
was
his
mentor.
Venkatesan
was
closely associated with
him and received a great deal of guidance and
encouragement from the maestro. Mani Iyer also
accompanied Venkatesan in several concerts.
Over the last 50 years, Venkatesan has been
performing at all the important fora in India and the
USA as well as in other countries, with leading
accompanists. His concerts are noted for their dignity
and technical virtuosity, His music is anchored in the
deepest traditions of classicism, characteristic of the
illustrious school to which he belongs, and yet has
acquired for itself a distinct flavour of innovation and
creativity, introduced with dexterity sufficient to retain
that brand of classicism.

Gurumurthy, the Chairperson
of the School of Fine and
Performing arts is also the
head of the department of
Indian music and an alumnus
of the University of Madras.
She is a rare combination of
being a performing artist, as a
vocalist in Carnatic, Hindustani classical as well as
Pannisai and in musical discourses besides being a full
time academician,and a musicologist.
She is a disciple of T K Govindarao, T.M Tyagarajan and
B. Rajam Iyer to name a few. Isaikalaichelvar, Acharya
choodamani are two important awards conferred
upon her by the Ramalingar panimandram and Sri
krishna gana sabha,apart from Nadakanal and Dhruva
Nakshatram.
She is an MA in Indian Philosophy,MA in Indian Music
and a Phd who has released many audio cds and has
performed lec dems and concerts in India and fifteen
foreign countries. Her first benefit performance was for
the Senpaga Vinayagar Temple Singapore, at the
Victoria Theatre way back in 1970 an event organised
by late S M Vasagar.

pursuing musical training under scholarly musicians,
Smt.R A Ramamani and Sri. T A S Mani. An M.Phil
degree holder from Delhi University having been
guided by erudite musicians like Prof.TRS and Ms.Radha
Venkatachalam. She has received guidance in the
nuances of music under the duo maestros, Sangitha
Kalanidhi Sri. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy and Sri. S Rajam,
She has been a performer, a research scholar and a
vocal teacher for many years; a B-high graded artiste
from AIR Bangalore performing since 1992. She worked
as guest-faculty in the Dept. of Performing Arts, Jain
University and associated as a member of the ‘Board of
Examiners’ with Bangalore University. Presently working
as a senior vocal tutor at Singapore Indian Fine Arts

his studies, shri Aaruran prossesses a degree in Carnatic

and also completed a Diploma course at the Madras
Music Academy under the guidance of Smt.
Rajalakshmi Narayanan and won the first place in the
final examination. She received several prizes and gold
medals in the Veena competitions in Sri Lanka and
India. She is teaching Veena for more than 20 years
and had given several performances in Sri Lanka, India,
Canada and Singapore. She is a Director of Carnatic

Nishanth, 20, started his
musical journey at the age
of 6. He joined SIFAS and
completed the 8 year
diploma course under the
tutelage of Guru Poorna
Pragna Rao, and received
the title award ‘Sangeetha
Visharad’. He is now being
groomed by Delhi Muthukumar, Chennai.
Nishanth was selected to perform and compete in the
prestigious Spirt of Youth Festival 2014 organized by the
Music Academy Madras, and was declared the “Best
Male Vocal Artiste”.
He is a frequent performer in Singapore and in the
December Music Season in India, in sabhas such as
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mudhra and Tirumala Tirupati
Devasthan to name a few. He recently also performed
in the Neelakanta Sivan Festival at Karamanai,
Trivandrum.
Nishanth is currently studying medicine at the National
University of Singapore.

A renowned artist from the All India Radio, Manikantan
has also accompanied for many musical legends
concerts, many Dance and music Arengetrams, NUS
Fusion Orchestra and the Chinese Orchestra in
Singapore and overseas.
His skill as a violinist aside, Manikantan is a talented
composer. He has composed Varnam, Jathiswaram,
Thillana and Padam for dance performances, and
several Ragamallika pieces for the Singapore Youth
Festival.
He is a conductor of Indian Orchestra in Raffles Girls’
Secondary School, and teaching violin at Temple of
Fine Arts Singapore. In recognition for his immense
artistry, he was conferred the title "Isai Gnana Jothi " in
India "Sangeetha Kala Nipuna " by Nrityalaya Aesthetic

Malladi Brothers - Sriram Prsad & Ravi Kumar
Sree Rama Prasad and Ravi Kumar popularly known as
Maladi Brothers hail from a family of Musicians from
Andhra Pradesh. They inherit music from their Grand
father Late Malladi Sri Rama Murthy a great Harikatha
Exponent of his time.They had their initial training from
their father Sri Malladi Suri babu a Senior Vidwan of
Andhra Pradesh and an illustrious disciple of Late Sri
Voleti Venkateswarulu, a legendary musician of great
Musician of great repute. Also learnt from Sangeetha
Kalanidhi late Nedhanooru Krishmnamoorthy and

Ms Sushma Somasekharan
Sushma Somasekharan a Chartered Accountant and
a proud alumnus of the Singapore Indian Fine Arts
Society (Sangita Visharad) with over 20 years of
training in Carnatic Vocal and is currently training
under Ms Lalitha Sivakumar Chennai.
Sushma has many awards to her credit. She is currently
a B High Grade artist with All India Radio. She received
the Best Vocalist Award from Parthasarathy Swami
Sabha, Chennai in December Music Season 2011.
Sushma has performed extensively in India, the US,
Europe, UK and Sri Lanka. She has released a CDs.
Bhaja Govindam, Vishnu Sahasranamam, Kanakadara
Stothram & Mahishasura Mardhani. She has produced
and presented two shows “The Elegance of Carnatic
Music “and “Gitanjali” at the substation, Singapore.

SIFAS - SINGAPORE INDIAN FINE ARTS SOCIETY
The Singapore Indian Fine Arts
Society was founded in the year
1949. The Society is devoted to
the teaching of the classical arts
in a non-formal environment. It
began humbly, with just 12
members. Today it has a
Principal, Academic Registrar
and 25 full time teachers, over
1600 members and about 1750 students with panIndian curriculum has been on that has yielded many
benefits. It has fostered home grown talent and
created an awareness and understanding of the
Indian Cultural Heritage, particularly valuable in the
multi-ethnic Singapore. To a large extent, the growth of
the SIFAS has paralleled the growth of Singapore. From
rough, early years, it graduated to an expansive period
through the 80's and early 90's when it received much
government support and consolidated its position. In
the early years, the Society's efforts were principally
directed towards the organization of concerts in music
and dance by local as well as visiting performers. In the
1950's efforts were channeled towards the creation of
an Academy to provide tuition in the fine arts, initially in
Carnatic music and Bharatha Natyam. The Society is
non-profit Indian cultural organization in Singapore that
has achieved a high level of technical excellence in
Indian Fine Arts. Graduates trained at the Society's
Academy of Fine Arts Provide principal support to other
Indian cultural groups.

Saraswati.
She
received her initial
training from teachers
Smt.
Rajalakshmi
Sekar, and Smt. Gowri
Gokul.
Poornima has been
very fortunate to have had the opportunity to sing in
some of the prestigious institutions in Chennai such as
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, The Mylapore Fine Arts Club,
Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Kartik Fine Arts. She has also
given concerts in Shanmukhananda, Mumbai,
Rajalakshmi Fine Arts, Coimbatore, Ram Seva Mandali,
Bangalore, and in various venues in Singapore and
Malaysia.
She was awarded the “Musiri Subramania Iyer Award”
for her performance at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha’s 57 th
Gokulashtami Sangeetha Utsavam in October 2012.

instill awareness of Indian dance forms in Singapore,
maintain the best standards of performance and
cultivate an interest in the rich heritage and traditions
of Indian Arts.Apsaras Arts was founded in Singapore in
1977 by Shri S.Sathyalingam and Smt Neila
Sathyalingam of Kalakshetra, India.
Several senior dancers of Apsaras Arts have branched
out to form their own dance institutions both under the
name of Apsaras Arts and in their own names, in
Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Sri Lanka, United
Kingdom, France and the United States. Since 2007,
Apsaras Arts has emerged as a premier professional
performing company, focusing on creating new works
at international and national festivals, corporate events
and during its seasonal performances.

being
an
upholder of the
Semmangudi bhani and the Veena Dhanammal
bhani. Aishwarya is a recipient of the Government of
India
scholarship.
Some
of
her
noteworthy
performances include those at The Cleveland
Tyagaraja Utsavam (USA), The Madras Music
Academy, Shanmukhananda Sabha (Mumbai), Bharati
kala Manram (Toronto). She is an A-grade artiste of the
AIR. She was awarded the “Best Concert” prize by The
Music Academy for her performance in December
2014. Aishwarya was conferred the “MS Subbulakshmi
Award” by Narada Gana Sabha and the “Best
Performer” by Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha, for her
performances during the December Season, 2013 and
the Meena Srinivasan Award, instituted by the IndoCanadian Shastri foundation .She has had numerous
write-ups and reviews in the country’s leading
newspapers and magazines. Academically, Aishwarya
is a Biotech Engineer.

As a dance tutor and
choreographer, she has
also choreographed and

testimony to her ability is that, 32 of her students have
performed their Arangetrams over the past 18 years.
She has been bestowed the following titles/awards:

Akkarai Sisters - Subbalakshmi and Sornalatha
Akkarai S Subhalakshmi & Akkarai S Sornalatha are one
of the young stars of Carnatic Music. Both as Carnatic
violinist and vocalist of par excellence whose rich,
soulful music has touched the hearts of listeners around
the world. From a musical family, the Akkari Sisters are
the disciple of their father, Akkarai Shri S Swamynathan,
a veteran violinist. They also trained under Shri V
Janakiraman, Shri O V Subramanian and his daughter
Smt Padma Natesan of New Delhi, and later on,
Padmabhushan Shri P S Narayanaswamy and
Chitravina Shri N Ravikiran, whom Subbalakshmi had
accompanied many of his concerts and provided her
with valuable musical guidance and experience.
Akkarai sisters have travelled all over the world, visiting
countries such as Japan, Singapore, U.S.A., Canada,
Germany, Italy, U.K., South Korea, the Middle East,
Australia, Sri Lanka, among many others. They are also
recipients of many awards and accolades.
