Here are some surprising facts, tips and tricks that may help: Don’t have three meals a day—have more. Have a good breakfast, three small meals (with snacks) with three hours between them and one meal at least three hours before going to bed. Add to your diet. Consume the recommended five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Spice up your food. Seasonings can enhance the taste and make you feel you’ve eaten more. Don’t exclude any nutrients or vitamins. Eat all kinds of foods. Downsize your dinner plates. Studies find that the less food put in front of you, the less you’ll eat. So serve your main course on salad plates. And no reaching for seconds. Instead of 16-ounce glasses and oversized coffee mugs, use 8-ounce glasses and 6-ounce cups. With extra energy to burn, you’ll maximize your power with discipline and perseverance. Apply your charm towards a solution that evaded you last month. Remember to include loved ones in your plans so they don’t feel left in the dust. Lucky Days: 4-12 Lucky Numbers: 33-45 TAURUS: Apr. 21-May 21: Home for you is really the natural world, you feel enlivened and renewed in the garden, on a hike or just sitting and watching a sunset. To calm your mind this month, consider the poet Rilke’s advice when stress begins to build: “If we surrendered to earth’s intelligence we could rise up rooted like trees.” Lucky Days: 7-25 Lucky Numbers: 3-63 GEMINI: May 22-June 21: From Proverbs comes: “It’s a joy to labor for those we love.” Make that your motto this month as Mars and Saturn work to set your close relationships in order. First comes truth telling, followed by a mutual agreement to work together and repair old misunder- standings. Lucky Days: 11-22 Lucky Numbers: 9-56 Lucky Numbers: 12-39 CANCER: June 22-July 22: You’re extremely sensitive to what is going into your body this year as Saturn moves through your house of health. This means initiating a slow but steady set of nutritional rules and regiments into your routine. Remember this bit of wisdom from Hippocrates: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Lucky Days: 3-12 Lucky Numbers: 19-63 LEO: July 23-Aug. 23: You need to turn everything upside down this month and stop seeing life as something you are waiting to engage with. Make it work by tapping into what’s happening right now. Aldous Huxley said it best: “Experience is not what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens to you.” Discover the difference. Lucky Days: 2-18 Lucky Numbers: 12-34 VIRGO: Aug. 24-Sept. 23: You feel like taking a break from the world this month as Saturn settles into your house of privacy. To stay busy (which you love doing) put your attention on your home. But make it fun, not a chore. That means mixing up tasks between the relaxing and the arduous. Variety keeps you feeling refreshed and on your toes. Lucky Days: 3-28 LIBRA: Sept. 24-Oct. 23: Your increased recognition in the eyes of others might force you to question your values, to set new goals for yourself and leave behind old habits. Libra, more than any other sign, learns the most about herself through her relationships; make the most of this tendency by observing others and paying close attention to their feedback. Lucky Days: 4-19 Lucky Numbers: 44-49 SCORPIO: Oct. 24-Nov. 22: Your urge for control takes on new colors as you awaken to the idea of assuming more responsibility with your job or stepping out on your own and becoming self-employed. This is especially critical if you’re dissatisfied with the status quo. Consider Coco Chanel’s words: “My life didn’t please me, so I created my life.” Lucky Days: 7-15 Lucky Numbers 37-55 SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 23-Dec. 21: With Saturn in your sign, the world is curious to see what you’ll make of yourself and your varied collection of ideas, dreams and schemes. The secret to working with this mix is to follow your heart’s deepest longing; it has all of the strength and emotional resilience necessary to move you towards the gold ring. Lucky Days: 5-24 Lucky Numbers: 38-69 February 2015 CAPRICORN: Dec. 22-Jan. 20: The writer Charles Eisenstein offers you a secret: “True discipline is really just self-remembering; no forcing or fighting is necessary.” The new moon on the 18th in your house of values means you’re ready to put your money and time towards an investment that will pay off in August. Remember to remember! Lucky Days: 3-18 Lucky Numbers: 8-32 AQUARIUS: Jan. 21-Feb. 19: The lunar cycle begins in your sign on the 18th, which creates a sense of both closure and new beginnings. Plan to relinquish what you intuitively sense as dead. This could mean rearranging key relationships. But also you’ll form some significant new contacts, too; in the business world and in the realm of the heart. Yes, romance could bloom! Lucky Days: 6-18 Lucky Numbers: 22-51 PISCES: Feb. 20-Mar. 20: You’re not big on reality checks, but this is the month when you start to make way for a much larger vision of what’s possible in your world. Delve into spiritual or philosophical studies. Align with a practice that anchors your imagination to a creative project that will channel your love of beauty and harmony back into the world. Play Our Newest Game “FireBall” February 2015 Bingo Sisters Bite the boots! Marla, Kate and I planned a boot-shopping expedition to the city and oh, my, did we ever find the most wonderful boots. We had agreed beforehand that we would limit ourselves to two pairs each but that was very difficult. I no longer have room in my closet for any more shoes, so it was either abide by our decision or find a new place to keep them. Marla bought some great faux crocodile ones and Kate found thigh-highs, while I went with fashion boots. We had just carried our purchases to the car and were looking around for a place to have lunch when Kate spotted an inconspicuous doorway that promised a Bingo game at 1. We quickly grabbed lunch and went off to play our favorite game. It turned out to be pretty crowded but I like that as the big payouts are usually percentages of the intake. Our cards were lucky right from the start, Marla and I being on for the first game and although neither of us won, we felt good to be that close. Kate won the third game and you would have thought she won a million dollars so happy was she. “That pays for one pair of boots,” she crowed. “Now I just have to fund the other pair.” I was delighted for her too although I really wanted a win for myself. Before long we noticed a lady had a puppy in her purse. He was cute as a button with his head sticking out curiously. Naturally, as soon as intermission arrived www.flbingobugle.com we went to talk with her. She let the puppy out and he went straight for Marla’s new boots, growling and charging. The lady said “No, No. Bad dog.” Several times but it had no visible effect. She tried putting him back in her purse but he refused that also, and continued barking and charging Marla’s boots. We were all very embarrassed and the lady said maybe she would have to put him in the car until the end of the games. “Oh, I hate to have you do that,” said Marla bending down and trying to pet the excited little guy. “Maybe if we let him get a good close-up of the boots, he’ll calm down,” said the lady. So we let him sniff the boots but he wanted to do them real damage and kept trying to bite. The games were ready to start again and the lady dumped the puppy into her purse and closed the zipper most of the way. Muffled barking came from inside. We returned to our seats, ready for more action, which we got right away as I was on and more than ready to win. I didn’t win that game, however and we went right on playing until the final blackout when Marla was on early and we had high hopes. The puppy seemed to sense our excitement and started barking inside the purse. When Marla won, the lady let the puppy out and he went right for the boots again. Marla danced around, kicking out to keep the puppy away while having her card verified. The lady quickly realized she had made a mistake and tried to corral the puppy but he was having none of it. All he wanted was to bite those boots. Marla got paid although it was difficult as she was dancing around, doing puppy avoidance steps. At last Kate scooped the puppy up and handed him back to the lady who unceremoniously dumped him in the purse. We took our winnings and our new boots home. 5 Ginny’s Rockledge B I N G O Sponsored by Cocoa Beach Optimist Club 940 Rockledge Blvd. (US-1) Rockledge FL • 321 632-8555 Friday Evening Bingo Doors Open 3PM Early Birds 5:30PM Warm-ups 6:15PM Regular Program 7PM Regular Program • 47 Bingo Games Paper and/or Electronic Daubing Computers • Pull Tabs Games Saturday Quarter Matinee Doors Open 1PM Games Start 2PM Until about 6PM Paper Only - Speedy Games Winner-Take-All Games Still Playing Bingo for Over 20 Years Ginny & Dave behind the counter Cynthia, Dawn & Joyce calling your Bingos Join us for the fun 6 Florida East Coast, Central & Tampa Bingo Bugle 1-954.776.3322 Pompano Beach Moose Lodge Bingo Every Wednesday Night 20 Exciting Games Basket Dinners Doors Open at 5pm • Games Start at 7pm Lucky Ball U Pick Em Packs $8. & Up Dixie Hwy & 33rd Street • 954.782.0950 Pompano Beach Elks Bingo Lodge N0. 1898 700 N.E. 10th St. Pompano Beach EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT $250 JACKPOTS GAMES START 6PM NICE CLEAN CLIMATE CONTROLLED HALL Bob On Bingo The birth of a Bingo hall Recently I had the happy occasion of sitting down in a Bingo hall that was just hours away from opening its doors for the first time. It was at the Tropicana Laughlin Hotel and Casino. Now, I should point out to you, if you have not heard of Laughlin, it’s in Nevada…right across the beautiful Colorado River from Bullhead City, Arizona. It is an oasis in the area that is not that old. Decades ago, an enterprising young man named Don Laughlin, who already owned a casino in Las Vegas, saw the potential of the Bullhead City area. The construction of a major dam on the Colorado was turning the area into a tourist trap and Don Laughlin was determined to cash in. He purchased a small 8-room property on the Nevada side of the river. From that humble start, Lauglin—which eventually would bear the name of its “founder”— grew into a multi-hotel resort that is somewhat of a “Little Las Vegas.” There had been Bingo in Laughlin for some time, but recently the Tropicana there, under the direction of slots manager Ed Ailstock, decided to start from scratch and February 2015 build a new, state-of-the-art Bingo hall. Seeing the nearly finished room was very interesting. Wires still stuck from walls. The “tote” boards were not activated yet. There were boxes of Bingo sheets lying around. But, Ed assured me it would not be that many hours before the first number was to be called. If I went home with one big memory of the experience it was Ed’s promise that Bingo would be FUN there. I was frank in my own feelings about the dullness of Bingo in some places and how so many people, even when they win, don’t look excited. Ed assured me that that would not be the case. “We will even have daubers with glow-in-the-dark ink,” he told me. He talked about nights that would cater to a younger crowd. I’m not sure in this competitive world if Ed will be able to follow through on all of his plans, but I have never seen a Bingo hall “boss” who is so determined to put the fun back into Bingo. And, I should point out that Ed didn’t give me any freebies to write a good review, only a complimentary glass of soft drink. I even paid for my own motel room across the river. But, the trip was worth it; I got to see someone who is committed to doing something I wish all managers had the liberty to do…make Bingo fun again. I wish I could have stayed another day to go to the first session. Oh, well, there’s always next time. Speaking of next time: Just how slow can a caller get? It’s easy and no one but you will ever know your score. Go ahead. Take the test, I dare you. 1) Your costs for the coffee you sell have gone up. You will: a) raise the price. b) substitute a coffee of lesser quality. c) use a can with a false bottom and hope the customer won’t notice. 2) You produce bathroom tissue and your costs go up. You will: a) raise the price. b) chop an inch off one end of each roll. c) produce a thinner quality of paper, fluff it up and call it a double roll and hope the customer won’t notice. Your costs to bake those little snack crackers have increased. You will: a) raise the price. b) knock off four crackers in each roll and bunch up the paper at each roll end. c) make each cracker smaller, label the box “reduced calories” and hope the customer won’t notice. Your chocolate candies have always cost a little extra and we know your costs stay right up there. You will: a) raise the price. b) put fewer candies in a bigger box with extra packing. c) make each piece smaller and hope the customer won’t notice. When your customers go to Bingo would you rather they told all their friends: a) your product costs a little more but it is worth the price. b) your deceitful practices have caused them to look at other brands. c) They found one they like. Older Drivers Car shopping tips Dear Savvy Senior, What resources can you recommend to seniors who are shopping for a car? My wife and I are relatively healthy 70-yearolds and are looking for a new seniorfriendly vehicle, but could use some help. Older Drivers Dear Older, For seniors who are in the market for a new or used car, the AAA (American Automobile Association) and the University of Florida’s Institute for Mobility, Activity and Participation has just updated an excellent resource called “Smart Features for Older Drivers” that can help you choose a vehicle that meets your needs as you age. Senior-Friendly Vehicles While the automotive industry doesn’t make vehicles specifically designed for senior citizens, they do make certain vehicles with features that can help accommodate the needs of older drivers. With that in mind, “Smart Features for Older Drivers” addresses the age-related physical changes – like diminished vision, arthritis, and range of motion loss – that can affect a senior’s driving ability and comfort behind the wheel, and outlines various vehicle features that help address those issues. Here’s what they recommend: Safety First The first priority is to identify vehicles with a proven safety record which you can research online at safercar.gov and iihs.org/ratings. Also look for vehicles that have dynamic stability control, anti-lock brakes, adjustable head restraints, and side and dual-stage/threshold airbags that adjust the deployment force based on the severity of the crash. Your next step is to identify specific vehicle features that can help meet your physical needs. So depending on what ails you, here is what to look for. Hip and knee problems: For comfort, a better fit, and easier entry and exit, look for vehicles that have six-way adjustable February 2015 power seats that move the seat forward and backward, up and down, and the seatback forward and backward. Also look for low door thresholds and seat heights that don’t require too much bending or climbing to get into. The ideal seat height for seniors is between mid-thigh and lower buttocks when standing next to the vehicle. Leather or faux leather seats are also easier to slide in and out of than cloth seats. Stiff upper body: If you have difficulty looking over your shoulder to back up or merge into traffic, look for vehicles with a large rear window for better visibility, wideangle mirrors which can minimize blind spots, back-up cameras, active parallel park assistance, and blind-spot warning systems that alert you to objects in the way. Also, for comfort and fit, consider vehicles that have a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, adjustable seatbelts, and heated seats with lumbar support. Arthritic hands: For easier use, four-door vehicles are recommended because the doors are smaller, lighter and easier to open and close than two-door models. And to help with painful gripping and turning problems, look for keyless entry and a push-button ignition, a thicker steering wheel, power mirrors and seats, and a sliding channel gear selector. Diminished vision: Drivers with vision loss due to cataracts, glaucoma or some other condition will find vehicles with larger instrument panels and dashboard controls with contrasting text easier to see and manipulate. And those with sensitivity to glare will benefit from extendable sun visors, auto-dimming rearview mirror and glare reducing side mirrors. Smart Features Resource To access the “Smart Features for Older Drivers” resource, visit SeniorDriving.AAA.com/SmartFeatures and use their online tool that lets you choose the age-friendly features you want in a vehicle, and the tool will identify the makes and models that best fit your needs. Or, if you don’t have internet access call your AAA (call 800-222-4357 to get your local number) and ask them to mail you free copy of the Smart Features for Older Drivers brochure. You don’t have to be a AAA member to get this free publication. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of The Savvy Senior book. February 2015 www.flbingobugle.com Dear Aunt Bingo Emergency situations How are they handled Dear Aunt Bingo, We were in the middle of a game in the second session of Thursday night Bingo on a rainy night. I was one number away from winning on two cards when there were two bright flashes of lightning, a loud “crack!” and then all the power went out. Along with all the lights going off the Bingo machine went dead, too. Everybody waited for a while in the dark but the power didn’t come back on. The Bingo hall manager announced that Bingo could not continue and that she would issue credit vouchers to everyone for a future Bingo. About two thirds of the way through giving us our vouchers the power came back on. Most everyone was still in the building and many of us wanted to go back and finish the games. I definitely did because I was very close to Bingo on the current game. But the Bingo manager said no because the power could go out again and they had already started refunding people’s money. We all left and the power never did go out again so in fact we could have finished the games. My question is whether you think the Bingo boss did the right thing by closing the games or if she violated any regulations by failing to return to Bingo once the power returned. —TTM, via email Dear TTM, Regulations governing Bingo cover the actual operation of the games, not emergency situations that disrupt a Bingo session. A broken water pipe, a power outage, a broken furnace, an earthquake…any number of things can occur that would cause the games to cease. To the best of my knowledge, regulators leave it up to the people operating the games to determine how to handle the situation. In your case, I believe the Bingo manager did a superb job. She waited a period of time before determining that the power might remain out before announcing that the games were cancelled. She then offered everyone refunds so that they could play again in the future. When the power came back, I think she was wise to assume that it might go out again—especially if that is typical of power outages in your area. 9 It also sounds like refund vouchers had already begun to be issued. What a mess it would have been to try and take back the vouchers and restart the games with no assurance that power couldn’t be lost again! Of course you were disappointed to be closing in on a Bingo when the lights went out. Many other players may have been in the exact same situation. But when an act of God brings Bingo to a screeching halt, it’s probably wise to call it a night, pack up your Bingo bag and head for home. —Aunt Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, It has been bitter cold for weeks and it takes every bit of personal strength I have to leave my nice warm home and go out into the cold and drive to Bingo. I seriously thought of skipping today, but one of my Bingo friends called to check and see if I was going. I told her I was on the fence, but she insisted she had a “really good feeling” that she was going to win big and wanted friends there with her when she did. She gets this feeling a lot and is always wrong! But she did get me excited about playing and I agreed to meet her at Bingo. And guess what—she was right about her winning feeling, but the winner was ME! I won two jackpots tonight for $1,650 total. And to think…I almost didn’t go because I didn’t want to get cold! —Marie, via email Dear Marie, Congratulations! I’ll bet your winnings will warm your soul for weeks to come! It just goes to show you that with any type of gaming, the bottom line is that you have to play to win and you have to show up to play. I actually play more Bingo in the winter than in the summer for two reasons: I have fewer activities in the winter which makes it easier to get out to Bingo more often, and the cold keeps people home so there is less competition for prize money. As your experience shows, braving the winter cold and snow can be quite financially rewarding! —Aunt Bingo Share your views! Write to Aunt Bingo c/o the Bingo Bugle, P.O. The idea that your garage goes off on its own says you are planning something that gives your life freshness and is also within your comfort zone. You might, in fact, have another dream similar to this, but as long as your garage is not sinking, I trust everything will be fine. — Dream Lady Dear Dream Lady A refreshing future ahead Dear Dream Lady, I had the weirdest dream that I was driving on a long, long dock in the fog. I was scared because I did not know where I was and I could hear weird sounds below me like whales. However, at the end of the dock, I saw my own garage, and I felt I was not in harm’s way and was even more surprised that my own garage door opener worked to open the door! I drove in and suddenly the entire garage separated from the dock and we started floating away. I woke up and remember feeling like I should be worried about something, but I was not. However, I don’t want this dream again. What’s going on? Gerry M., Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Dream Lady, I recently turned 60. I dreamed I was parachuting away from a large birthday party into a huge grove of palm trees that had several giraffes wandering around. I remember trying to guide the parachute so I would miss the trees and the animals. It was not a pleasant dream. Barbara G., Chicago, Illinois Dear Barbara, The parachute tells me you are trying to get “up and away” from a situation you find disturbing. A grove of palm trees says you might have some friends who disappoint you. The giraffes warn you to mind your own business. Since you just had a hallmark birthday I suspect you are examining what you can change for the future. Birthdays are good in that way, aren’t they? —Dream Lady Super Bowl Food Texas-Style Chili Sweet green pepper and corn added to seasoned chunks of sirloin beef up this Super Bowl stew from Country Living magazine. 2 1/2 pounds boneless beef top sirloin steak 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 medium onions, chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 can (28-ounce) tomato sauce 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves 1 teaspoon salt 2 medium sweet green peppers, cut into 1-inch squares 1 package (10-ounce) frozen whole-kernel corn Corn tortilla chips (optional) 1. Trim off any fat from sirloin and discard. B Cut sirloin into 1-inch cubes. 2. In heavy 6-quart saucepot, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat. Add half of sirloin cubes. Sauté until pieces are browned on all sides—about 5 minutes. Remove sirloin to a bowl; repeat to brown remaining sirloin cubes. 3. Add remaining tablespoon oil to saucepot; add onions and sauté until soft and translucent—5 to 7 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1 minute. Return browned sirloin and any juices to saucepot. 4. But she wasn’t our only champ. Many of our Bingo players also participated in the Bingo Bugle’s Blackjack, Texas Hold ’Em and Slots tournaments to challenge their luck and see if they could cash in on the thousands of additional dollars up for grabs during the cruise. Among these players was Mimi Weiner of Pasadena, California, a first-time Bingo Cruise participant who said she signed up for the Sizzling Slots Tournament because she loves playing the slots and wanted to experience a little bit of everything during her maiden voyage. Beginner’s luck was on her side: Mimi won $1,200 in the Bingo Tournament, $735 in a flash game and $1,500 more by taking second place in the slot tournament. What did she think of the experience? “I got hooked,” says Mimi, who has already signed up for the 2015 Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise—which she will enjoy with her daughter. “It was fun wandering the ship, I ate great, and the Tournament and ship’s casino were excellent. There is a friendly atmosphere from the workers and players that just made me want to do it again.” Unlike Mimi, Bill Armour of Landers, California is an old hand when it comes to the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise, having been on the cruise twelve times with his wife, Maureen. “We enjoy cruising, and going on a trip that includes the Bingo Tournament adds something unique to do at sea,” Bill says. Bill is a fan of blackjack, and signed up for the Bingo Bugle Blackjack Tournament. “I don’t normally have much luck in tournaments, but this year from the start I was getting hands I don’t normally get, which gave me a really good feeling.” About 100 people were entered in the Blackjack tournament, which was eventually narrowed to a final seven, with Bill positioned in fifth place. “Luckily, the good hands kept coming,” Bill says. The tournament ended with Bill taking the top spot and winning $750. There were plenty of other winners, too. Following Bill’s first place finish in the Bingo Bugle Blackjack Tournament, Marilyn Lewis of San Bruno, California won second place and Nina Wood of Gardnerville, Nevada placed third. In the Sizzling Slots Tournament, Catherine Weigel of Berryton, Kansas took first place and $2,500, Mimi Weiner won second place and $1,500, and Carol Campbell of Roanoke, Virginia won $500. In the Texas Hold ’Em Tournament Arlie Loy of Union Hall, Virginia won first place and $1,000, Maureen Armour won second Our Lady of Lourdes Monday Night Bingo Marking 35 Years of Service to South Florida Bingo Fans We Offer The Best Values Ever, Maximum Prize Amounts Allowed Under Florida Law! Become a member of our ever-expanding winners circle by signing on for the 2015 Chemical Weapons The pictures of blistered skin and the photocopies of the medical records make it clear: Service personnel in Iraq were exposed to chemical weapons—nerve agent Sarin or mustard blister gas. It wasn’t just one or two broken and leaking canisters that were uncovered. Photos show dozens, even hundreds, of canisters in multiple caches. Depending on which version of the story you read, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel either did or didn’t recently order medical examinations of those soldiers who’d been exposed to those chemicalwarfare agents. He asked that the medical treatment they received be examined. A Department of Veterans Affairs press release dated 2000 says that a former acting VA secretary had been “helping secure expanded benefits for veterans who were prisoners of war, or who were exposed to Agent Orange, radiation or mustard gas.” A 2005 press release says that the VA “announced a national outreach campaign to locate veterans who were February 2015 World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise. Somewhere between 2000 and 2005, troops in Iraq unearthed caches of chemicals—and were injured. As late as 2008, soldiers reported contact with the chemicals. Some were denied decontamination. Some were accused of malingering. A few were given ineffective creams. A few were hustled out for care; most weren’t. Some veterans who handled those canisters still have symptoms that were not taken care of at the time, especially breathing problems. If you were there, make an appointment to be checked out. To read the whole story, go online to NYTimes.com and search for “Troops to Be Checked for Chemical Exposure in Iraq.” Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible.
