OWLS OF THE WORLD—WHO’S WATCHING YOU? Friday, February 20 at 1 p.m. (School Vacation) Owls of the World - Who's Watching You? Introduces you to the owls of New England and beyond. Mark and Marcia share the field marks, signs and naturalist's skills that you can use to find wild owls without disturbing them. Next, you meet six live owls (from small to huge) up close. Everyone participates in a hooting lesson and learns tips on how to attract and protect owls near you. Marcia and Mark Wilson founded Eyes On Owls in 1994 as an educational enterprise that brings wild owls to schools or groups to teach us more about our wild neighbors and their habitats. The owls they care for at Eyes On Owls are permanently disabled that is they can't survive on their own in the wild. Many of the owls are survivors of collisions with vehicles. Bring your your grandchildren and great grandchildren to learn about and experience these fascinating birds. Please register at the reception desk of the Whipple Senior Center. Adults $3, children $2 and children under 2 free. Cost includes refreshments at the show. Children must be accompanied by an adult. But we can do small things with great love”. Mother Theresa ! Hello! My name is Chris Quinn and I am the new Coordinator of Volunteers at the Whipple Center. I choose to quote Mother Theresa in my first column in the Horizon because her simple message reminds us of the importance of kindness and that each of us can and do make a difference in the lives of others that we come into contact with each day. At the Whipple Center, the gift of your time makes it possible for us to provide the excellent services here for you to enjoy. We have many volunteer opportunities; please stop in or call me at 781-682-3814 if you would like to learn more about how you can make a difference at your Senior Center. We are currently recruiting people who would like to pick up and deliver books to homebound elders. If you are aware of an elder in town who might be interested in this service, please tell them they can call me and I will happily set up this service for them. A special THANK YOU to all of you who donated toiletries for our drive in January to benefit clients of the Food Pantry. We were remiss in not mentioning last month a special thanks to Janet Smith who sorted, checked, and re-checked the Christmas presents purchased for the Giving Tree and delivered to the residents of Weymouth nursing homes. Welcome to new volunteer Sheethal Surendran, information technology, library assistant. ! Our condolences to the family of George Williams. George was a volunteer archery teacher at the center for many years teaching both seniors and youths. George was a skilled archer and instructor. He achieved 7 archery metals in the Senior Olympics. We are grateful for the generous donation of his time. ! I look forward to meeting and working with you in the weeks and months to come. Happy Valentine’s Day to all! Sincerely, Chris Quinn The volunteer program is funded in part by a Community Development Block Grant. 9 Weymouth Elder Horizons February 2015 FROM ANN IN THE OUTREACH OFFICE As everyone is aware, the rates for electricity have increased this winter and Outreach is aware that there are many seniors out there struggling to pay their bill. We want everyone to know that there are some things you can do to lower your electricity costs. National Grid offers budget plans that may make it more manageable to pay these increased bills. One option that is available for those who have their electric and gas bills through National Grid is the Balanced Billing Program. With the Balanced Billing Program, National Grid takes the projected gas cost for a 12 month period and divides it equally into 12 monthly payments. If there is a significant change in the agreed payments then bills will be adjusted, after meter reading is conducted. The electricity budget plan is done the same way. National Grid determines your usage for the year and divides your bill into twelve equal payments. In order to enroll in this program, you cannot have an outstanding balance with National Grid.
