Born on March 17 into the family of Brad and Christina, Emma Jane and Annabelle Cowherd, Joshua Thomas’ First Church family includes his grandparents Phil and Patty Cowherd and Leon and Paula Mausser. A rose on the altar celebrates Joshua’s birth and baptism. A rose on the altar celebrates the birth of Finley Grace Hidek in North Carolina on April 9. Her parents are Jeff and Stacy Hidek. Finley Grace’s grandparents are Bill and Linda Hidek. The bell choir arrangement of “How Great Thou Art” is given to the glory of God and in honor of Lynn Van Horne’s retirement by the Book Club. About the Music: “When the Roll Is Called up Yonder” is one of those hymns that has an intriguing genesis. The author, James Black, was a Methodist Sunday School teacher , music teacher and President of a young persons society when he met a poor 14 year old girl in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Black invited the girl to his class. When he called roll Black asked the members of the class responded by quoting a Bible verse rather than saying “here” or “present.” When he called this poor girl’s name she was silent. The incident distressed Black greatly and when he returned home that night he wrote the words in 15 minutes. Moving to the piano he composed the music in a single inspired sitting and never changed a note or word to his popular hymn. Our men’s quartet, Him Tunes, always offers interesting arrangements for our worship and this morning we hear two familiar and very contrasting hymns. We can be sure that James Black would approve of their offering of his ever popular song. In most surveys of favorite hymns, “How Great Thou Art” is always represented at the top. Interestingly, it was first included in a Methodist Hymnal in 1966. Possibly because the hymn had been used as a “theme song” for the Billy Graham crusades there was much debate as to whether it should be included in a Methodist publication. However, the people of Methodism made it the most requested tune to be added to the hymnal revision of 1966. The love/hate relationship continued through our current hymnal revision when in 1989 the membership of the United Methodist Church voted “How Great Thou Art” as the most liked but also the least liked hymn found in the 1966 hymnal. No matter if or how you voted, Joel Raney’s arrangement offered today by the Wesley Ringers is a beautiful setting of the Swedish folk song the melody is based upon. Beginning with gentle, cascading eighth notes that depict the opening Creationist verses, the arrangement skillfully combines handbells and handchimes as the music gracefully illustrates the text of the hymn. The combination of bells and chimes is a lovely combination and continues through the arrangement until Mr. Raney brings the work to a majestic close with bells alone. Charles Gounod (rhymes with Bruno) (1818-1893) was a French composer most remembered for his operas and his setting of “Ave Maria.” Those of us who remember the early days of television also know one of his works, “The Funeral March of a Marionette,” as the theme song for Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In 1854, Gounod completed his Messe Solennelle, a concert setting of the Ordinary of the Mass for large choir and full orchestra. The “Sanctus” sung today by the Chancel Choir is from this larger work. The melody is first stated by solo tenor singing a flowing yet dramatic line in triple meter. The choir enters singing subdued chords in marked contrast to the graceful line of the solo. The tenor again sings and again is given a lovely melody that rises and falls with emotional intensity. The basses of the choir begin the final section of the movement in hushed tones that are repeated by all the sections. The music slowly builds to a grand climax as the choir sings “Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,” “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Candler Singers and Voices of Resurrection April 29, 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship Next Sunday, two choirs that have been selected to sing at General Conference in Tampa will also sing for our worship. The Candler Singers is a choir of seminary students from the Methodist seminary in Emory University. The 20 singers are all students of theology preparing for ministry. Directing the choir is Rev. Barbara Day Miller, assistant director of Worship and Music at Candler. The Voices of Resurrection is a 20 member, auditioned ensemble from The Church of the Resurrection in suburban Kansas City. The group sings a variety of musical styles but concentrates mostly on the Jazz idiom. The choir is in Florida to sing a special concert at General Conference as they represent the largest Methodist church in America with 7,430 members attending worship each week. Both choirs will sing several selections before worship begins. We encourage you to arrive 15 minutes early to worship next week.
