MED-ITATION
[email protected]
In August of 1777, John Wesley wrote a letter
to a friend, Alex Mather, regarding the lay
ministry within the Methodist Church. Mather
and Wesley had been discussing the difference
between lay ministry and ordained ministry
in the Church. In the letter, John Wesley
expressed his opinion saying, “Give me one
hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin
and desire nothing but God, and I care not a
straw whether they be clergymen or laymen;
such alone will shake the gates of hell and set
up the kingdom of heaven on earth.”
Within the history of the Methodist movement
is the faithfulness of the laity, who work to
establish a church that is solid and very much
a part of the fabric of our United States of
America. As the movement spread throughout
the New Land, Wesley depended on the laity to
govern the church and to build a foundational
structure that still exists in today’s modern
United Methodist Church. He was so confident
in the ministry of the laity he only sent two
ordained clergy (Francis Asbury and Thomas
Coke) oversee the work of the laity. In the
governing structure of the United Methodist
church still today is the concept of a lay
ministry that requires a lay vote for every
clergy vote. This equal formula has worked
well in the church and has stood steadfast
throughout the history of the church.
This Sunday, October 19th, is our annual
celebration of lay ministry within the church.
This takes place every third Sunday of October
and lay preacher/speakers are usually invited
to speak and lead worship in the church. I have
always been grateful to God for the laity in
this great church who commit themselves to
serving God and “(setting) up the kingdom of
heaven on earth.”
We are very fortunate here at Griffin
FUMC to have a lay speaker in our church
who is not just a lay speaker, but who is a
representative of the North Georgia Annual
Conference at the General Conference of
the United Methodist Church. Bill Stikes is
one of 26 lay delegates from North Georgia
who represents our Conference and church
in a most marvelous way. I know him to be
very dedicated and committed lay minister/
speaker and church member. I also know Bill
to have a real love for the United Methodist
Church. I encourage all of you to share in your
support of the lay ministry of our church and
gather this Sunday in celebration for the work
and ministry of our great United Methodist
Church. I will be in church on Sunday. Bill
Stikes will be here and so too the Lord God
will be here. I pray YOU will be here?
Peace and grace,
Med

Jesus And Me (J.A.M.)
In J.A.M., for the last six weeks, we have been
teaching children that “God Speaks”. We
encourage each of you, big and small, young
and old, to take time to slow down and listen
to God speak to you. You must quiet yourself,
tune in to His voice, and then you will hear
what He is speaking to your heart.
