Rotarians learn about
modern retail in India
At last week's meeting, Kishore Biyani discussed the Indian retail industry
K
nown as the “Czar of the
Indian Retail Bazaar”,
Kishore Biyani is credited
with being the pioneer of modern
retail industry in India. He laid the
foundation for a retail revolution
in India by founding the Future
Group in the 1990s.
He thanked the Club for
inviting him to talk to people who
could be his prospective customers. He discussed the way
people look at business in India.
“I believe that there are three
businesses that everyone knows
about in India — cinema, politics
and retail. We fall in retail and it
is a simple business wherein we
sell our products directly to the
customers. India is an effortless
interaction of paradoxical ideas of
tradition and modernity and that
makes an entrepreneur’s job very
difficult. We believe that ours is a
country of the future, in terms of
consumption, and our consumption needs are getting higher
and higher by the day. India
celebrates more than 72 festivals
every year and all of them are
based on consumption. Our
consumption will touch three and
a half trillion dollars by 2030 and
we are here to make our country
reach those numbers," he said.
Biyani explained how the
Future Group works on community-based consumption patterns
in India. He said, “When we
began our journey in modern
retail, there was hardly anyone
in the business, so our emphasis was on creating a demand
for value-added products. We
believe in combining art and
science with the idea that you
can take an Indian out of India,
but you cannot take India out of
Guest speaker Kishore Biyani at last week's meeting
President Shailesh Haribhakti at last week's meeting
an Indian, no matter where they
are geographically.
"Indians love the concept
of chaos and our outlets are
based on this very principle as
the buyers love the atmosphere.
Understanding Indian consumers makes the art half of a retail
business. American markets have
grasped the science of it better
than we have as we are still trying
to understand Indian communities
and their preferences. We always
say that retail is our religion,
stores are our temple and
customers are our gods. As
retailers, we are forever in the
process of learning and today,
by being here, I have learnt a lot
from all of you.”

Bhavishya Yaan introduces a
Personality Development Workshop
E
volution Revolution is one
of Bhavishya Yaan’s dream
projects through which the
BY Committee hopes to initiate
an all-round development of its
students across all BY Schools.
As a part of this vision, a
Personality Empowerment
Workshop was conducted at
the East Byculla Municipal
School with Marathi and Urdu
medium students from sixth to
ninth standard. Each batch had
approximately 50 students.
A few members of the Rotaract Club of H.R. College visited
the school for three consecutive
Saturdays and conducted various interactive group activities
to help the children communicate better with their friends and
teachers, boost their confidence,
improve their English speaking
skills and helped them cultivate
a habit of reading which will
make them better learners in the
long run.
Some speaker sessions
were also organised with faculty
members from the schools and
Rotaractors to help the children
focus better on their curriculum.

Bhavishya Yaan Committee's
Annual Cricket Fellowship
O
n January 17, the
Rotary Club of Bombay
President’s XI took on
the Bhavishya Yaan XI for the
Annual Cricket Fellowship at P.J.
Hindu Gymkhana, Marine Drive.
The match was organised by
the Bhavishya Yaan Committee
along with the Sports Committee
of Rotary Club of Bombay. It
was a tremendous success,
what with several non-players
and non-cricketers waking up
early on a Saturday morning to
enjoy the game as well as to
watch enthusiastic cricketers
turn out in whites to play the
gentleman’s game.
It was the combined effort
of the tireless Moy Biswas, who
had successfully organised the
Golf Tournament a week ago,
along with the Bhavishya Yaan
group that ensured a good
turnout and a successful event.
This was the first time that all the
players of President’s XI
were Rotarians.
Moy was the first to arrive,
followed by Shivkumar Israni
and Deepak Kapadia. All players
(11 from the Club and 15 from
Bhavishya Yaan) made it well
before 8.30 am. When both the
captains walked for the toss, it
was Moy who tossed the coin
high up in the air. The toss
was won by President's XI who
elected to bat first with the belief
that the conditions of the wicket
were perfect for scoring.

The two teams:
President’s XI: Hoshang Nazir
(Captain), Bimal Mehta (Wicketkeeper), Samir Mogul, Satyan
Israni, Ashwin Thakkar, Anuj
Arenja, P.K. Mohankumar, Ashwin

Didwania, Mehernosh Dotivala,
Mehul Sampat and Viraf Hansotia.
Bhavishya Yaan XI:
Sudarshan Pardhi (Captain
and Wicketkeeper), Abhishekh
Gupta, Gorakshanath Karkande
(Colaba School), Rajendra
Chalke, Ashraf Khan (Byculla
School), Darshan Jadhav, Sagar
Bhandurge (NMJ Marg School),
Roshan Badak, Deepak Kate,
Prashant Manval (GK Marg
School) and Ankit Vishwakarma
(Worli School).
The match started on
schedule at 9.45 am. Samir
scored 53 runs and, as per an
unwritten understanding, had
to retire. Debutant Mehernosh
scored 30 runs. The quality of
fielding of the Bhavishya Yaan XI
was excellent. The President’s
XI finally scored 169 in the
allotted 20 overs. After a short
interval, the Bhavishya Yaan boys
walked out to bat with supreme
confidence. They made a slow
start thanks to brilliant bowling
by Samir, Ashwin and Hoshang
and agile wicketkeeping by Bimal.
Sudarshan provided the right
impetus to the innings with a wellscored 22 runs and ample support
from the others but unfortunately
they were all-out at 117. The
President's XI beat the youngsters
of the Bhavishya Yaan XI by a
comfortable margin of 49 runs.
Among the enthusiastic and
cheering spectators were BY
Committee Chairman Shivkumar
Israni, Ramesh Narayan,
Madhusudan Daga, Preeti Mehta,
Manoj Patodia, Rajesh Shah, Alok
Sekhsaria and Anand Dalal. The
other coordinators present were
February 3 to February 9, 2015
Rashna Cooper, Nandita Patodia
and Jaya Prasad.
Several Past Presidents —
Arun Sanghi, Sandip Agarwalla,
Nowroze Vazifdar, Nirav Shah —
were there to cheer the players
along with President Elect Sonya
Mehta, Sherebanu Baldiwalla,
Jayesh Jhaveri, Mahesh
Kubchandani and S.V. Prasad.
Moy brought the curtain
down on the event by thanking
Deepak Kapadia for his
invaluable contribution in
arranging all the facilities at the
P. J. Hindu Gymkhana. The
Chairman of the Bhavishya
Yaan Committee and Moy
presented mementoes to the
participants of Bhavishya Yaan
XI, before everyone retired for
a celebratory lunch. The 'Man
of the Match' was awarded to
Sudarshan of Bhavishya Yaan
XI for his brilliant innings of 22
runs and keeping wickets very
effectively by stumping three of
the opponents. The prize was a
cricket kit sponsored by Satyan
Israni consisting of a Sachin
Tendulkar Adidas bat, two
practice balls, a set of stumps,
an India jersey, cap and a kit
bag. Bimal Mehta was also
presented a special trophy by
his teammates for outstanding
wicket-keeping.
Moy also thanked the office
bearers of the Club for their
encouragement, support and
motivation, which ensured the
success of this event.
LETTER OF APPRECIATION
Dear IPDG Lata Subraidu,
On behalf of the trustees of Rotary Uttarakhand Disaster Relief Trust, I convey greetings and good wishes for the
New Year.
District 3140 has been very kind by providing generous financial support of R64.3 lakhs for the reconstruction of
schools in Uttarakhand destroyed by the 2014 flash floods. This entitles your district for placing recognition plaques
at six schools. One will carry the recognition plaque of The Rotary Club of Bombay (as informed by Past RI Director
Ashok Mahajan), four will carry the recognition plaque of District 3140, and one will carry the recognition plaque of
"Shivdevi Deviprasad Goenka Foundation" whose contribution came through PDG Sajjan Goenka.
It has been more than a year since Rotary in India embarked on the project of rehabilitation and reconstruction of
schools. We were unable to comprehend the challenges that lay ahead in constructing schools in remote and hilly
terrain but with a firm resolve to overcome these challenges, we made progress and have completed the first batch
of schools, which were handed over to the respective school management committees on November 14, 2014.
Seven more schools which are currently under construction are expected to be ready by end of February. In addition
to the three completed and seven under construction, depending on the weather and barring any unforeseen
circumstances, we hope to be able to complete the remainder of the 27 schools during the current year.
The schools that will carry the recognition plaques as mentioned above are located in the Agastmuni Block of
District Rudraprayag and are expected to be ready during the current year. On behalf of the trustees of Rotary
Uttarakhand Disaster Relief Trust, I convey my sincere gratitude for your generous support.
Kind regards,
Yash Pal Das
Trustee, Rotary Uttarakhand Disaster Relief Trust
