Living a Myth Some people go to Church because they think it makes them good While others occupy their place because they feel they should In pleasant weather some will go a little time to spend And others like to grace the place to gossip with a friend Yes, people go to Church for many reasons, some quite odd But oh, what blessing waits for those who come to worship God. – Source Unknown As a child, I recall the foregoing poem included as part of a parish newsletter. Often, much of the “fluff” that finds its way into parish newsletters has little spiritual value, but the poem stuck with me over the years. The intervening decades have seen the fastest decline in Church attendance in the history of the world. The persecutions in pagan Rome, threats from Muslim sultans, and the Soviet gulag had a slower effect on cutting into Church attendance than life in the comfy, modern world. But why is it happening? For Orthodox Christians, who believe the old dictum “lex orandi, lex credendi” (the law of worship is the law of belief), this trend has chilling implications: for those who do not worship, belief is eroded, and spiritual strength is snuffed out. Ironically, Church attendance in the West today is not hit by persecution, but by seduction. The sword of the Ottoman janissary has been replaced by the lure of the shopping mall. The fear of starving to death in Siberia has been replaced with the comfort of bacon and eggs for breakfast. The threat of arrest by centurions – the threat that led to the liturgical command to bar “the doors, the doors” before the recitation of the Creed – this threat has been replaced by the fear of missed email or missed sleep. In some cases, attending church is a reality check that many are unwilling to bear. While the world of spiritual books requires little change in the life of the reader, a conversation or Confession with a spiritual father makes certain demands on our Christian life. Having to co-exist with other faithful during the service, during classes or social events, confronts each of us with potential frustrations where we are faced with the very real challenge of actually being a Christian. As Sartre suggested, in the material world, “hell is other people”; for those who acknowledge that Hell is something far more serious, avoiding the “hell” of other people becomes a sure passport to Its Eternal Reality. In all these cases, the Orthodox soul that endeavours to remain untested in his faith, remains outside actual Christian life. Living in two worlds, Orthodox life becomes the same as modern spiritual life: contrived, subjective, plastic, and fake. When we are in a position where we might not attend the services of Christ’s Church, we should ask ourselves: Would I be staying home if this were a work day? Will my sickness be better if I stay at home? Am I further ahead to attend Church late, or not at all? Am I attending Orthodox services for a “taste” of something “spiritual”? (i.e. Am I a spiritual dilettante?) Will not attending the services this week make it easier for me to avoid them in the future? Am I generally spending more time on mundane things than at prayer or church? (e.g. brushing my teeth, watching television, shopping, drinking a coffee, etc.) There are of course many similar questions we can and should ask ourselves. The main point is this: If our Orthodox faith is not actually lived out and strengthened by the holy services, it is nothing more than fakery and self-deception. There are lots of religious outlets created for the purpose of offering such false spiritual life, and catering to our “felt needs”. The Holy Orthodox Church, the Body of Christ, is not one of them, and if we fail to understand this and to live accordingly, we miss the point of going to church – and the point of the Church. PROKEIMENON First Tone Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20 Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God. The Proclamation of the Holy Gospel The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke the Evangelist 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' Kavadas We have heard the word “Bible” since childhood and yet many have gone through life without even holding a Bible in their hands. Some Christians claim “they do not understand it.” Others are under the impression that they do not need it, while most of us could be right when we say that “we don’t have time to read it.” But are we right? Do you know what the Bible is? Shall we share just a few thoughts on this subject? Almighty God revealed His plan for the salvation of mankind through chosen personalities who prophesied the fulfillment of the law. This plan was recorded in the Old Testament. In the fullness of time, this plan of God, His promise of salvation, was fulfilled in the Person of Jesus Christ. Christ gave the right interpretation to the old law, and wrought the salvation of mankind, as is recorded in the New Testament. Thus, the Old Testament should be read and understood in the light of the New Testament, which records the message and events in the life of the Person of Jesus Christ, the Savior, and should be understood as such. The New Testament, thus, is the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Old Testament, the Person of Jesus Christ, His Life and His Gospel. Despite the differences that separate the Christian Churches, there are, also, strong links that unite them. The strongest of these links is that all of them have the same, so to say, “Magna Charta.” This, of course, is the Holy Bible, that contains the Divine Revelation, i.e. the direct contact of the eternal Word (Logos) of God with man, aiming at his salvation from sin as well as his rebirth in Christ. The Holy Scriptures, “the sources of salvation,” according to Athanasios the Great, are the basis of the teachings of all Christian Churches. The center of these teachings is Christ and the salvation and redemption in Christ which was prepared in the Old Testament, completed in the New Testament and granted to the faithful by the Church. Knowing the Bible, we know the Word of God. Reading the Bible should be our everyday project but studying both Testaments, understanding their history and discovering their contents should be the goal of a lifetime for all Christians. Here are some suggestions for your personal “relations” with the Bible: • Do you have a “personal” Bible? If you do not have one, go our and buy one. (You can buy the Orthodox Study Bible in our Cathedral Bookstore. • Discipline yourself to read a chapter every day, beginning from the Old Testament. Do not give up this attempt. Continue this “holy habit” until you finish the entire Bible. • Underline with a pen or pencil the words and sentences that you enjoy most. • It is possible that this “contact” with the Holy Book might be a constant item on you daily agenda for the rest of your time upon this earth. • Do you believe you can practice what you discover in the Bible? COMMUNITY PSALTER GROUP FOR GREAT LENT: JOIN US FOR OUR COMMUNITY PSALTER READING AND PRAYER GROUP FOR GREAT LENT! Imagine the beauty and power of our entire Cathedral Family joining together to read the Psalter every day and pray for one another, throughout Great Lent! Join us this year, beginning Monday, February 23, 2015 until Pascha. There is no limit to the number that can participate in this project. All you need is a Psalter, or your Bible, and the commitment to carve out twenty minutes of your day to read the Psalms, and then pray for the twenty members of your individual Psalter Group. STEWARDSHIP PLEDGES AND ENVELOPES: We would like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to all of our parishioners for their generosity of time and talent! As you know, the 2015 Stewardship Campaign is already underway. This year, instead of the boxes of stewardship envelopes that we have used in the past, we are implementing a new system. Each month you will receive a mailing from the Cathedral Office. In that mailing, will be four stewardship envelopes for the month and a return envelope. You may choose to bring your envelopes to Church on Sundays, or mail them back in the return envelope. From time to time, the mailing may also contain other communication(s) from the Cathedral to help you stay better informed on the events and happenings in our parish. AHEPA FAMILY BUCKEYE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION APPLICATIONS: The AHEPA Family (Order of AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles, and the Maids of Athena) Buckeye Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2015 scholarship applications are ready and available. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral will be hosting our Parish Oratorical Festival on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please review the topics listed below and make plans to participate in this worthwhile endeavor! 2015 Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival Topics Junior Division (Grades 7 through 9): 1. The theme of the 2014 Clergy-Laity Congress was “The Orthodox Christian Family: A Dwelling of Christ and a Witness of His Gospel.” Discuss how today’s Orthodox Christian families can strive to live according to this ideal. 2. Saint Paul writes, “An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules” (II Timothy 2:5). Discuss the virtue of honesty in a time when cheating in school, sports, and other activities is reported more and more. 3. Discuss the Orthodox Christian practice of fasting from certain foods and the spiritual discipline it teaches, especially in light of the Lord’s directive in Matthew 6:16-18. 4. Malala Yousafzai is an inspirational example of fighting fearlessly for a noble cause in spite of threats against her life. Discuss a young saint or person from the Bible who illustrates such courage. 5. Several leaders in the political and religious arena have been described as people with a prophetic gift. What really is a prophet? Discuss their actions in light of the Old Testament prophets and in comparison to other contemporary examples. Senior Division (Grades 10 through 12): 1. The Lord said, “I was in prison and you came to me” (Matthew 25:36). What does this teach us about our attitudes toward those in jails and imprisoned? 2. Psalm 50 (51) begins, “Have mercy on me, O Lord...” It is considered the psalm of repentance. Discuss how praying this psalm might affect our understanding of repentance, confession, and forgiveness. 3. Women apostles, martyrs, and saints have spread the Gospel and advanced the Church from the beginning of Christianity. Discuss the significance of their roles and examples for all Christians today. 4. The Saint Nicholas Church at Ground Zero, which was destroyed on September 11, 2001, is soon to be rebuilt. Discuss the ways in which this tiny church building will now become a symbol of the universal themes of victory over evil; healing and hope; and being a beacon of Orthodox Christianity. 5. Using the parable of the poor widow’s offering to the Temple (Luke 21:1-4), discuss the Orthodox Christian attitude of offering to the Church’s ministries.
