Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their
God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he
remains faithful forever.
*Invocation and *Lord’s Prayer: Matthew 6:10-14
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
for Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever, AMEN.
*Affirming the Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 1
What is your only comfort in life and in death?
That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to
my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied
for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves
me that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head;
indeed, that all things must work together for my salvation, and, therefore, by His
Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and
ready from now on to live unto Him.

OT Reading: Genesis 32:22-33:4
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants
and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent
them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was
left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man
saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip
so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the
man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let
you go unless you bless me.” 27 The man asked him, “What is your
name?” “Jacob,” he answered. 28 Then the man said, “Your name will no
longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with
humans and have overcome.” 29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to
face, and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because
of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon
attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was
touched near the tendon. 1 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming
with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel
and the two female servants. 2 He put the female servants and their
children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the
rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven
times as he approached his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet Jacob and
embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And
they wept.
Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon from Isaiah 57
Almighty and merciful God, we have dreaded and feared other Gods. We have not
been true to you, nor remembered your covenant with us. We have misunderstood
the times you are silent as times when you are weak and distant. You have allowed
us to cry for help to our favorite idols but they are no help. You alone are holy
forever. And to you we will come confessing that we are not holy.
Pastor: For this is what the high and exalted One says—he who lives
forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with
the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite. I will not accuse them forever, nor
will I always be angry, for then they would faint away because of me—the
very people I have created. I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I
will guide them and restore comfort to Israel’s mourners, creating praise
on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord. “And I
will heal them.”

Sermon Text: Luke 15:1-3, 11-20
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.
2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man
welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 Then Jesus told them this parable…
11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one
said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his
property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together
all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in
wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in
that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired
himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed
pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating,
but no one gave him anything. 17 When he came to his senses, he said,
“How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare and here I am
starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him:
Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer
worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’” 20
So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off,
his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his
son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the
dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the
everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His
will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus
Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
