As Christians committed to the belief that we are saved by grace through faith, the congregation of Mount Carmel exists to GATHER in worship and fellowship, to GROW in the knowledge and love of Christ, and to GO in service to a world in need.” 8:45 Traditional Worship February 8, 2015 Fifth Sunday after Epiphany 1701 Fredericks Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 805-544-2133 www.mtcarmelslo.org Lutheran Campus Ministry 805-542-0260 www.lcmslo.org Welcome to Mt. Carmel! What a pleasure it is to worship together! All of the directions for worship are found in this bulletin. Music that isn’t printed in the bulletin is found in the cranberry hymn book located on the shelf under the seat in front of you. The bulletin references this book as ELW (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) and guides you to the hymn number which is found in large numbers on the top right hand of the page. We hope that the information on this page will help to make your worship experience comfortable. The “Connection Card” which is inserted into this bulletin serves two purposes. Side One is our means of keeping up with you through the mail (both email and posted mail). Side Two is how we learn of your prayer needs. Members, please provide your name, but only fill in contact information if there has been a change. Please follow the instructions on the card and let’s Connect! Holy Communion is a sacrament in which we believe Jesus is truly present. All who feel called by the Spirit are welcome to Christ’s table. The ushers will direct you forward via the side aisles and kneel or stand at the altar rail. Open your hands to first receive bread. Gluten-free wafers are available; please advise the pastor of your preference when you come forward during communion. After you have received bread, indicate to the assisting minister if you would prefer an individual glass of wine or grape juice, or the Common Cup of wine. After receiving, you may stay at the altar rail for a moment to pray, and then return to your seat. If you are unable to come forward for communion but would like to receive it at your seat, please indicate so to an usher. For Little Ones: Children’s Church is a part of our worship together. Kids, ages 3-9, will be invited to the fellowship hall for a lesson with our Children’s Church volunteers. They will be brought back to the sanctuary in time to share in the Lord’s Supper. Children who have not yet communed are welcome to the Lord’s Table to receive a blessing. Goody bags hang on a small rack in the lobby. They contain toys and other things to keep children engaged during worship. Grab one and enjoy! The Cry Room is available if you’d like a private place to be with your infant or toddler where you can still see and hear the service. It is in the back of the sanctuary and accessed through the lobby. Nursery is open during both services as well as during Sunday School between services. Karen Weber, our nursery teacher, is a professional child care provider. Ask the usher for directions. For the not so little: Hearing aids are available behind the sound board on the wall. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask an usher. May God bless us all as we worship together! INTERIM PASTOR: Rev. Bruce Wollenberg DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN AND TEENS MINISTRY: Ingrid Frokjer DIRECTOR OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC: Paul Woodring INTERIM CHOIR DIRECTOR: Ruth Rollefson 2 WE GATHER AS A COMMUNITY IN FAITH Prelude "Thy Holy Wings" Swedish hymn, arranged by Richard Webster Welcome Opening Hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Kyrie 3 ELW #733 4 5 Opening Prayer P: Let us pray: C: Everlasting God, you give strength to the weak and power to the faint. Make us agents of your healing and wholeness, that your good news may be made known to the ends of your creation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Children’s Church Dismissal WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD First Lesson Isaiah 40:21-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like ea6 gles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 147:1-11,20 Choir & Congregation Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises | to our God! How pleasant it is to honor | God with praise! The LORD re- | builds Jerusalem, and gathers the ex- | iles of Israel. The LORD heals the | brokenhearted and binds | up their wounds. The LORD counts the number | of the stars and calls them all | by their names. R Great is our LORD and might- | y in power; there is no limit | to God's wisdom. The LORD lifts | up the lowly, but casts the wicked | to the ground. Sing to the LORD | with thanksgiving; make music upon the harp | to our God, who covers the heav- | ens with clouds and prepares rain for the earth, making grass to grow up- | on the mountains. R God provides food | for the cattle and for the young ravens | when they cry. God is not impressed by the might | of a horse, and has no pleasure in the speed | of a runner, but finds pleasure in those who | fear the LORD, in those who await God's steadfast love. | Hallelujah! R Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, 7 so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Gospel Mark 1:29-39 C: Glory To You, O Lord As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gath8 ered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. Help Welcome and Tell Our Story: You can help tell the Mt Carmel story to our visitors to the Interfaith Series by welcoming them, introducing yourself and guiding them into the talk location. We have been having 50 or 60 guests from outside our church each week so there is a great opportunity to show how Lutherans welcome others. We especially need some help at the 12:30 time so please stick around a few minutes after the 11 am service if you can and greet our friends. LENT Devotion Books Are Here!
