WEEK OF COMPASSION OFFERING
Will You Put Your Compassion into Action?
Give and Change the World
When some of the earliest followers of Jesus experienced a famine in Jerusalem, the
Apostle Paul organized an appeal to respond to their needs. Christian communities in
distant places put their Compassion into Action and gave to this ecumenical offering,
much like we do today through Week of Compassion.
The Week of Compassion offering reaches widely, impacting lives in our own neighborhoods and those we may never meet but who are in need of our compassion. God
provides the resources so we can give back. We’re giving back to God what is already
God’s-so that we might all thrive!
“I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a
question of fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their
abundance may be for uour need, in order tht there may be a fair balance”
(2 Cor 8:12-13)
Our abundance becomes their need and their need becomes our abundance. What if we all lived as if this is our call?
We would change the world.
Will you put your Compassion into Action?

Reflective Prayer
Lord, call us into the church.
Call us in often, and teach us the
old words and old songs with their
new meanings. Lord, give us new
words for the words we wear out.
Give us new songs for those that
have lost their spirit.
Give us new reasons for coming in and for going out,
into our streets and to our homes.
As the house of the Lord was moved like a tent through
the wilderness, so keep our churches from being rigid.
Make our congregations alive and free.
Give us ideas we never had before, so that Alleluia and
Gloria and Amen are like the experiences we know in
daily living.
Alleluia! O Lord, be praised! In worship and in work, be
praised! Amen

Richard’s Reflections
“Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a
hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother in the house was looking out the
window saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could.
Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late.
Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched
his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too
passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard her screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.
Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal,
and on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.
The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And
then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, "But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom
wouldn't let go."
You and I can identify with that little boy. We have scars, too, No, not from an alligator, or anything quite so dramatic, but the scars of a painful
past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend, are because God has refused to let
go. In the midst of your struggle, God has been there holding on to you.
The Scripture teaches that God loves you. You are a child of God. He wants to protect you and provide for you in every way. But sometimes we
foolishly wade into dangerous situations. The swimming hole of life is filled with peril – and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. That's
when the tug-of-war begins - and if you have the scars of His love on your arms be very, very grateful. He did not and will not - let you go.
If you see someone without a smile, stop ... and give them yours (:-). God has blessed you, so that you can be a blessing to others. You just
never know where a person is in his/her life and what they are going through.”
God Bless You,
Richard
Church Humor
Cowboy Joe was telling his fellow cowboys back on the ranch about his first visit to a big-city church. "When I got there, they had me park
my old truck in the corral," Joe began.
"You mean the parking lot," interrupted Charlie, a more worldly fellow.
"I walked up the trail to the door," Joe continued.
"The sidewalk to the door," Charlie corrected him.
"Inside the door, I was met by this dude," Joe went on.
"That would be the usher," Charlie explained.
"Well, the usher led me down the chute," Joe said.
"You mean the aisle," Charlie said.
"Then, he led me to a stall and told me to sit there," Joe continued.
"Pew," Charlie retorted.
"Yeah," recalled Joe. "That's what that pretty lady said when I sat down beside her."

Joys & Concerns
COME AS YOU ARE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
Week of February 1, 2014
Sometimes “belief” and “faith” are seen as synonymous but one is a
noun and one is a verb. Faith involves some sort of action. I can
believe all sorts of things but do not necessarily need to act upon
them. It is not enough to believe in what Jesus had to say, we must
act upon it. Relationships play a huge part in the Christian faith.
There are seven categories of relationships (and you thought there
was only one or two!).
Many within the YACC family are
prayed for daily. Please remember
these specific needs:
Health Issues:








Louise Coats daughter, Christi Dorsey, needs prayers for healing from knee injury - possible surgery.
Jean Covey had a lumpectomy on 2/3. She has a slow growing
cancer.
Terry Gentry’s son, Mike, is recovering from ankle surgery.
Nancy Hamilton’s Husband, Ray, was in St. John Medical Center over the weekend with pneumonia as well as other health
problems. Her brother, Gary Smith, is at home but still being
treated for infection and low blood counts and continues to be
very ill.
Sue Lower continues to be at Zarrow Community Center in the
Skilled Nursing Center.
Don & Bryan Petersen continue to struggle with health issues.
Wanda Rupe continues to recover from hip replacement and
expects to be back in worship in the next few weeks.
Mary Wallace’s sister-in-law, Colleen Randall, has breast cancer and had a mastectomy on 2/4.
Joys:

We rejoice that Lloyd Hurd and Larry Hall were able to return to
worship on Sunday.
Others Lifted Up for Prayer:
