Appendicitis in Children and Adolescents, 2004 – 2006
The purpose of this study is to review the experience with appendicitis in children and
adolescents in relation to pain management, operative strategy/technique, and postoperative
management, hospital course and complications. An objective of this study is to report the
outcomes of a single institutions’ experience of 650 children with appendicitis in
comparison with accepted outcomes reported in the literature.
Individual Workload Perception Study – Pediatric Hospitals, 2004 – 2008
Leading study with 10 children’s hospitals in the United States with an eleventh
international site in Guangzhou, China, to do initial benchmarking, development and
implementation of interventions and re-testing using Individual Workload Perception Scale
(IWPS).
Essential of Magnetism in Magnet and Non-magnet Hospitals, 2003-2004
The purpose of this study was to 1)establish the relative weight of descriptors for the eight
‘essentials of magnetism’, 2) validate the performance of staff nurses in magnet hospitals on
those eight essentials of magnetism and, 3) ascertain whether the expected difference

between magnet hospital and ‘aspiring magnet’ hospital nurses exist. Children’s Mercy
Hospitals and Clinics was one site of a national study and the primary investigator was
Marlene Kramer, RN, PhD, FAAN.

Leadership Project – Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program, 20022003
The purpose of this research was two-fold. First, occupational adjustment (stress, strain, and
coping) and workload perception was assessed on a sample of nurses who participated in a
newly developed supplemental orientation program for graduate nurses at Children’s Mercy
Hospitals and Clinics using the OSI-R and IWPS instruments. Second, data were compared
with existing data on a similar sample of nurses who had completed the OSI-R and IWPS
instruments and who had participated in the hospital’s routine orientation program. (Funded
