Spring Break
Schools around the state are reporting an increase in marijuana-related incidents; middle
and high schools alike. In response to this, Coronado is hosting a Parent Forum on
Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 6:00 pm in our auditorium. We invite you to join us for
this very informative panel discussion which may bring up many questions from you, our
parents and community. See below for details.

Counseling begins the registration process for students attending the 2015-2016 school
year in February. Students will bring home a Coronado High School registration guide.
Please plan some time to look it over with your students and focus on choosing those
classes which will best fit your child’s academic needs. This alleviates a lot of the unknowns
in August next year.
Winter sports are in full swing and state meets and tournaments wrap up in February.
Student Council offers concessions at all home events so take advantage of this time to
watch our girls’ and boys’ basketball and our swimmin’ women. Take to the ice to watch
our boys’ hockey at Sertich or the World Arena for more winter sports.

When reporting a partial day absence please
state the time your student will be out of school NOT THE PERIODS, for example, 9:00 am to 10:00
am – NOT 2ND AND 3RD PERIODS. We have
various schedules for different days.
If a student will miss part of a school day,
please have your student deliver a parent’s note
to the Attendance Office before school begins or
call a few hours ahead on the day of (or day prior
to) the appointment. This way, students will be
ready to leave on time and will have a permit to
leave class and the building. Parents cannot
expect students to be ready to leave in a timely
manner if no advance warning is given.
Please make every effort to refrain from picking
up your student from 2:40 to 3:00 p.m. The office
is inundated with calls and activity at this time.

Parking Lot
Guidelines
Our parking lot continues to flow somewhat
smoothly on most days; however there are a few
areas where we need our community’s support:
In the morning
Please plan on arriving with enough time so
your student can get to their locker and
class before the 7:40 am bell (at which
point they will be considered tardy).
If you drop your student off at the west
entrance, please pull in as far as the
marquee to alleviate traffic backing up.
In the afternoon
Please continue to pull as far forward as
possible, this allows us to get as many cars
as we can into the pick-up/drop off lane.
Please do not pick up your student in the
through lane, pull to the curb to pick them
up. Picking students up in the through
lane also backs up traffic.
If you know that your student will be late
coming out, please consider pulling into a
parking space so that we don’t impede
the pick-up lane with standing cars
waiting for long periods of time.
With winter in full swing, please be aware that
we tend to have more parents picking up
students on bad weather days. We ask that you
plan accordingly so that, a) your student is picked
up in a timely manner, and b) you are aware of
the extra congestion and time needed on these
days.

Inclement Weather PARCC Testing Schedule
In the event of a cancellation or delay due to snow, the following will be implemented:
TWO HOUR DELAY
No testing will occur and ALL STUDENTS SHOULD REPORT TO SCHOOL. We will be
on a regular two hour delay schedule. All tests scheduled on that day will take place on Friday, March 6th.
SNOW DAY(S) INFORMATION
(a) If there is a Snow Day on Tuesday, March 3, all tests scheduled for the day will take place on Friday, March 6.
(b) If there is a Snow Day on Wednesday, March 4, all tests scheduled for the day will take place on March 6.
(c) If there is a Snow Day on Thursday, March 5, all tests scheduled for the day will take place on March 6.
(d) If there are two consecutive Snow Days, we will notify parents of the adjusted PARCC schedule with a
broadcast call AND schedule changes will be posted to our website.

interviewing for Mentor positions for next year
will begin in March.
Coronado cares about families! Cougars Care is
Coronado’s own in-house non-profit organization
run by students and staff advisor, Brent Urban, to
support students and their families who need a
helping hand. Cougars Care has an emergency
supply closet to provide food, clothing, and school
supplies, as well as an application to assist with
other needs like school fees BEFORE students are
placed on obligation. Students are asked to
commit to community service in and around
Coronado to “pay back” funds used in their name.
Large expenses such as class trips are beyond the
scope of what Cougars Care is able to do.
Coronado parents, the community, and our
Westside business community contribute to this

COUNSELING CTR.
2015/2016 Coronado Registration Information
FOR 9th, 10th, & 11th GRADERS
Ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students will receive registration materials on February
4th. They will be in the computer labs sometime between February 12-March 3, entering
their own course requests into the computer system. Please help your students
understand that when they sign up for classes, they are making a commitment. We build
our master building schedule and set teacher allocations around student requests. By
the time August rolls around and school starts, classes are balanced and full. We are
setting March 13th as the final date a student may request a class change in their course
request list for next year. We cannot accommodate changes when students and parents
request changes in the fall. The policy at Coronado High School is that we do not make
schedule changes after school is out in May. Please help your student carefully select
classes so that changes do not need to be made.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR DURING THE REGISTRATION PROCESS:
 English Honors and AP classes typically have summer reading assignments.
 Some classes at Coronado offer college credit concurrently with high school credit.
 Some courses carry a fee.
 There are many classes that offer computer credit – a requirement for graduation.
 PE 9 is a prerequisite to all other PE classes.
 Many colleges now require 2 semesters of Fine Arts (art classes, music classes,
drama classes, etc.)
Information on the above items can be found in your student’s course guide. This book is
now on our CoronadoCougars.com website!
ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR:
A course selection list will be available to students later this spring online on Student
Connect. This is not a schedule, but a list of courses the student has selected for next
year. Students and parents should check this list carefully to make certain that we have
correctly listed the classes that the student wants for next year. If the classes listed are
correct, the student does not need to do anything. If the courses are NOT correct, the
student should see his/her counselor as soon as possible so that the needed corrections
are made before final schedules are created. Call your student’s counselor if you have
questions about this important step in the registration process.
AN IMPORTANT FINAL WORD ON REGISTRATION:
Four year colleges in Colorado will be requiring four years of college prep math and one
to three years of a world language while in high school. Parents, please discuss this very
important issue with your student when discussing their course selections for next year.

JUNIOR ACT/SAT & PREP
TESTING
The junior year is a year for taking tests and
shopping for colleges. Testing comes in the forms of
ACT and/or SAT.
Registration information is
available in the counseling center. All juniors will be
taking the April 28th Colorado State ACT test at
Coronado. The counselors will be registering
students for this state mandated test. There is no
cost for the test. For national Saturday test

PREP INFO
We are pleased to have the renowned test prep
company, Princeton Review, working with us this
year. They have agreed to offer a FREE practice ACT
to our juniors on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:40 a.m. This
is during the time the 9th and 10th graders are
testing. Princeton Review will then return on April
8th to discuss your practice test results with you.
There are a limited number of seats available, so
sign up today in the counseling center with Mrs.
Guthmiller!
ACT preparation classes are available in two formats
at Coronado this spring. The Prep for the Future
workshop will be held April 8 and 9 from 3:15 - 5:45
pm for a cost of $79.00. Information will be mailed
home regarding this opportunity or you may check
www.prepforthefuture.com to register.
The “in house” workshop will be held March 31,
April 1 and 2. Students will review the practice
manual included in the registration packet. One
session on each of the following will be covered;
English/reading, mathematics, and science. The cost
for the “in house” workshop is $20.00 (cash or check
to CHS) . Each session will run from 3:15 to 4:30 pm.
Students may sign up for either of these workshops
with Mrs. Guthmiller in the counseling center. We
must have a minimum of 15 students signed up in
order to run this workshop.
College Goal Sunday—Feb. 8
Discover your options to pay for college!
College Goal Sunday is an opportunity for students
and parents to get free expert help in filling out the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA.
The FAFSA is the first step and a Federal
requirement for all college students who plan to pay

SENIOR THOUGHTS
If you’re having trouble deciding between
several colleges, make a list of “pros &
cons” for each college. Compare financial
aid awards, making sure you are comparing
“apples to apples”. Make sure the cost of
attendance for each college includes the
same
items.
Although
tuition,
transportation, and room/board amounts
will vary, other items should be equivalent
(books and personal expenses). If loans
are offered as part of your financial aid
packages and all else is equal, an offer
including subsidized loans is superior to
one with unsubsidized loans. As soon as
you decide and commit to a school, make a
reservation to attend the earliest
“orientation/registration” session possible
for best class selection.
College Opportunity Fund
The state of Colorado is offering to all
Colorado students the College Opportunity
Fund (COF), which is a reconfiguration as to
how the state funds higher education. The
monies that normally went to the institutions
are now being given to the schools in the
name of the students. To take advantage of
the College Opportunity Fund, parents and/or
students must register at the following
website: www.collegeincolorado.org. It is a
very simple registration. Once registered, the
college or university will take care of reducing
the tuition for the student once the student
has been accepted to that particular school.
All students, grades 9 -12, may register for the
College Opportunity Fund; this only needs to
be done ONCE during the student’s school
years. We strongly recommend students
complete the registration process even if
attending a post-secondary institution is in
doubt at this time.
Warning: if a Colorado student is admitted to
a college/university and does not register for
the fund, parents/students will be responsible
for paying the student’s portion of the COF.
SHOPPING FOR COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES
Parents and students are urged to schedule visits with possible
schools of choice. Most universities offer visitation days in the
spring and summer prior to the student’s senior year. Take
advantage of these opportunities. Students should be looking
for schools that are a good fit, like a comfortable pair of shoes.
Is the size right? Does the school offer the programs that I may
be looking for? Is the school too far from home (or too close)?
These and many more questions can be
answered with a visit. Information on a visit
can be obtained by going to the schools’
websites. Look for visitation days. A student
may also contact the schools and arrange for
personal tours.
MORE SENIOR THOUGHTS!
Money for college? A reminder to the parents of seniors! If
your student is planning to attend a four-year college, junior
college, or a vocational program, they should complete a Free
Application for Federal Student Assistance - FAFSA application.
Applying to FAFSA is required to qualify for federal, state, and
local financial aid. Most higher educational institutions will not
discuss financial aid with you until you have received a FAFSA
report. FAFSA applications are available on the web at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSA should be completed before March
1st, as most scholarships offered by universities are only offered
through March 1st. Don’t forget: College Goal Sunday is
February 8th. Financial advisors will help you and your parent
complete the FAFSA! Come between 1 and 3pm to either
FINANCIAL AID
Once your student has been admitted to a college, it is
important that you make an appointment with the financial
aid office at that institution. Most financial aid offices will be
able to help you with additional scholarships to help pay for
college. Thousands of dollars are lost every year because
students and parents are not working directly with the college
to find financial aid.

AP TESTING
NEW! AP Exam Registration will be Online
Mrs. Schulzki will present to AP classes beginning January 30 to discuss the new online Advanced Placement exam
registration process, as well as hand out the exam schedule, and the AP Bulletin. Exams this year at Coronado will be
offered at no financial cost to the student by School District 11. The online registration window for AP tests is January 30 –
March 13. Students will be able to access the online registration website by going to the Coronado website at:

Students and parents can review the exam schedule, deadlines, and general information, by clicking the link to register
directly. Coronado’s assigned access is: www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/060273. Follow the link to the registration page
and continue through a series of steps to order for specific exams. Students are encouraged to register only for classes
they are currently taking since the class provides the specific course of study and preparation needed to succeed on the
exam. If a student wishes to any other exams for courses they are not registered, please check with Mrs. Schulzki.
Students are expected to take the AP test on the date and time assigned by the AP College Board. Students with
documented disabilities may be eligible for testing accommodations. If you will be requesting an accommodation, and
have not yet done so, see Mrs. Schulzki in the north end of the library, Room 228, immediately. The results of the AP
Exams are sent to students (students will access AP scores with their assigned AP number distributed upon their first
exam), their secondary schools, and the colleges they select, in early July.

CU GOLD/ALP/GT

CU Succeed/CU Gold
A reminder, the registration process for CU Succeed/CU Gold classes has begun for the second semester. Mrs. Schulzki
has visited with all the classes involved in the program this semester and distributed the information packet, directions
for registering, the course number, and the Tuition Contract with School District 11. Students must earn an A, B, or C in
their registered CU Gold courses in order to be considered a student in good standing with the university and the
school district, however, students who do not pass the course will be obligated for the full tuition. Students may end
up paying for their courses if they don’t return the signed contract by Feb. 27 to their teacher or Mrs. Schulzki (CU Gold
Coordinator/Counseling). Most universities only accept a C or better in a course. In order to provide so many course
offerings for college credit, Coronado works with the University of Colorado, Denver (UCD) and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS).
Parents and students should also be reminded to order transcripts directly through either UCD or UCCS’s website so
that student grades can be transferred to the university of their choice, post-high school graduation. Grades for CU
Gold are not posted until after June 15.
Registration for UCD/CU Gold courses are at: www.ucdenver.edu/succeed. Registration for UCCS/CU Gold courses are
at: www.uccs.edu/apply. If students have already applied to the CU Succeed program, they may jump to the Claim
Your Account or Register steps. Course numbers have been provided to students directly, or are posted in their instructor’s classrooms. Please see Mrs. Schulzki prior to February 6th to apply and register if help is needed. The last day
to register is February 11 (UCD) and February 20 (UCCS).

ALP updates
The Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) process continues. On
December 10, Mrs. Schulzki met with identified sophomore GT
students to review the new online ALP format. Sophomore ALPs
were due January 20, although students can opt to complete
them anytime throughout the year, Mrs. Schulzki will begin
consultations the week of February 2 with those students
wishing to meet. The ALP plan allows for students to have
greater input and creates a resume of their work and interests to
date. Mrs. Schulzki will meet with students to review their plans
and goals and make suggestions or provide resources. An
informational meeting for identified GT junior students will take
place March 11 during Cougar Connection. Seniors are busy
preparing for their post-secondary prospects, but may meet with
Mrs. Schulzki anytime, if needed. Please go to http://

Coronado Stock Market Competition
MARKETING & PROMOTION
The Coronado Stock Market competition is introduced to students taking any
Business, Marketing, or Computer Applications course. However, all Cougars
and parents are welcome to play (only Coronado students are eligible for the
cash prizes). Students are taught the basics about making trades including:
buying, selling, short-selling and trend watching. The following table shows

Gazette 5-A Coach of the Year:
Congratulation to Coronado Golf Coach, Marty Cornell
Coach Cornell was been awarded the Gazette 5-A Coach
of the Year. He was also named the Colorado Coaches
Association Boys Golf- Coach of the Year. This is a huge
honor and is well deserved. 5-A State ChampionsUndefeated Season!
The Coronado wrestling team, coached by Matt Brickell,
is currently ranked #6 in Colorado 5-A. At the CSML
Championship meet, the Cougars finished 2nd behind
dominant performances from: Evan Kay 1st , Chase
McElhany 1st , Jimmy Weaver, Jess Hankin, Daytwan
Shirley, Zeb Foster and Ryan Strabala. Come watch the
Cougars at home as Coronado hosts the Cougar Classic on
February 7th. The State Championships are at the Pepsi
Center on February 19-21.
First year Coronado hockey coach, Mark Tabrum, is
pleased with continued effort of the Coronado team
under such a difficult rebuilding season. The Cougars (112) finally got their first hockey win since 2013. Coronado
defeated Valor Christian 9-5 last week to end a two year
drought. For a complete list of all scores and team and
individual stats, check www.maxpreps.com. The hockey
team is a co-op made up of 20 players from eight schools.
12 players are Coronado students.
Swimming head coach, Katie Baker, and the "Swimmin’
Women" are making a strong re-entry into 5-A swimming.
The Cougars are led by captains Sarah Stafford and Katie
Jacobs and Emily Randono. Coronado has qualified for
state in all three relay events. Stafford has also qualified
in the 50 yd. free and Jinny Jin in the 100 yd.
breaststroke. This weekend Coronado will swim at
Rampart for the CSML 5-A Meet. February 13-14, the girls
travel to the 5-A State Championships in Denver.
First year girls’ basketball head coach, Yantz Robinson, is
pleased with the efforts of the Lady Cougars. Senior CC
Coombes leads Coronado in scoring (11.1 ppg). Junior
Rachele Smith contributes 6.3 ppg and leads the team in
rebounding. The Cougars also have a group of very young
and talented players who have made an impact.
Coronado suits three freshman and three sophomores for
the varsity team. With one senior on this years’ team, the
future of girls’ basketball looks good.

Winter Sports...
Thank You!
The winter sports season is into full swing, and the Cougar teams
are once again representing Coronado in great fashion. We
currently have 157 students involved in five winter sports
The Coronado boys’ basketball program has found winning at the 5A level to be a difficult task. The 4-12 Cougars are led in scoring by
seniors; Adam Egger 10.4 and Cody Robinson 10.5 ppg. When the
Cougars are firing on all cylinders, they can play with anyone. Interim
head coach, Rick Boese continues to seek to find combinations for
maximum productivity. Consistency has been difficult this season.
