Welcome…… Thankfully we have managed to make it through the cold & icy January relatively unscathed. The club remained open throughout the month despite the tough conditions. Unfortunately part of the fencing around the outdoor tennis courts took a beating, & the external flashing on the indoor tennis hall detached itself thanks to the high winds at the beginning of January. Spring is just around the corner and with that hopefully brings more energy for us to allow us all to enjoy our fitness and rackets. Now is the time to start increasing your fitness levels – so why not take advantage of our soon to be released fitness membership sale to kick start your season. Please don’t forget to OPT IN for Wimbledon tickets, even of your not interested, your OPT IN can help others increase their chance of enjoying the chance to see Wimbledon. Unfortunately time has finally taken its toll on the fencing surrounding outdoor courts 3-6. Rust & the strong winds during January has managed to break the uprights. Thankfully with the courts still out of use this has had no impact on play. We are currently sourcing quotes to get the fencing replaced in time for the new season. Coach Corner The Ready Position The ready position is the foundation for almost all of your strokes when you are playing tennis. How you prepare and move around the tennis court relates back to the ready position. More generally, the ready position is an athletic position that allows you to move quickly around the tennis court in any direction. Mechanics of the ready position - You want your feet apart twice the width of your shoulders. Your knees should be slightly bent and your weight should be on the balls of your feet, not the heels. Your upper body should be relaxed, with your arms and the tennis racket out in front of your body. Angle the head of your racket up a little bit. Your back should be straight so that with your legs bent, almost like you're sitting in a chair. There are some checkpoints below to help you improve your ready position. Checkpoints for the ready position Feet twice as wide as shoulders Toes forward and knees above toes Weight forward on balls of feet Racket away from body with tip of racket level with nose WIMBLEDON TENNIS TICKETS Tennis Box Leagues Box League Info • • • 29 June – 12 July 2015 • The box league is an approved LTA short set singles set of matches amongst members of a tennis club. Alex’s Fitness Page Food facts Each month Alex will offer some valuable tips on training and diet to help ensure that you keep yourself in tiptop shape for whatever your game. This month again I'm reminding you all about the benefits of protein in your diet. If you want to build muscle, burn fat and recover better after your workouts, protein rich foods should be a staple of your diet. Tuna Steak Training and Hunger Training hard can make you hungry. Feeling ravenous and grabbing unhealthy snacks before or after your workouts can cause your calorie intake to outweigh the number of calories you burn off. Always eat 3 healthy meals a day. Aim to eat a meal 2 hours before a workout, or have a healthy snack, such as a banana, 30 minutes before and make sure you eat a healthy meal within an hour of your workout. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, among other valuable nutrients. It's far more meaty and flavoursome than the canned version and better still it's available at Costas Bistro so why not give it a try after a workout or a hard game of racket sport. Cashew Nuts These nuts have a high level of antioxidants, which according to the British Journal of Nutrition are essential for good heart health. Greek Yoghurt Greek yoghurt is packed full of healthy bacteria and enzymes that do wonders for your digestive health. HIIT High intensity interval training is all the hype. According to a survey conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine, it's was one of the two top fitness trends of 2014. High intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give all out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. Long gone are the days of not having enough time for exercise. HIIT workouts can be done anywhere and most are 30 minutes or less. No equipment necessary workouts generally use only your body weight, since the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there. So why not give it a try print a copy of this page bring it on Saturday morning and get it for half price that's only £1.50 for a hard fun workout. Class starts at 10.30am.
