Brandeis National Committee PHILANTHROPY LEARNING COMMUNITY The Somerset Chapter Programs for January - April 2015 IDEAS FROM IRIS I recently read an article about staying young longer. What a concept! Since I am past the six month mark towards my next birthday, I paid particular attention. Is there a new vitamin that I did not hear about? The answer was very simple. The article touted the obvious: proper diet, exercise, enough sleep and surrounding yourself with positive, happy people. So what is new? The article proceeded to tell of recent studies at various universities showing that people who volunteer, who give back to society, live happier and more fulfilling lives and therefore live longer. My take of the study is that the point is to forget Botox and fillers and VOLUNTEER. The SUSTAINING THE MIND campaign, the BNC research endeavor that is working on finding a cure for neuro-degenerative diseases is in the final countdown. Currently we are 2/3 of the way toward our $3 million goal. Somerset Chapter is proud that we donate the proceeds from our trips and some of our programs toward this worthy project. Contributing to this fund in honor of a happy occasion or a memorial is a way you can also help make this happen. We need your help to make this possible. The Somerset Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee will be partnering again with the Anshe Emeth Community Development Corporation. In addition to collecting medical equipment no longer needed by our members and community, we will help provide much needed diapers for infants as well as adults. BNC will be hosting the Director of the CDC, in February. We will learn how the CDC responds to Domestic Violence and the other ways they are an important part of the community. We will also continue working with JFS in providing mentors to the elderly, and other volunteers for their clients. Going forward we will support the Better World Café which is sponsored by Elijah’s Promise. The bottom line is that in order to help get rid of the lines on our faces, volunteer, give back and look forward to a long and happy life. Best wishes for the coming season of Thanksgiving. Iris MISSION STATEMENT Brandeis National Committee is dedicated to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished Liberal Arts and Research University founded by the American Jewish Community. The “Forward” was a Yiddish newspaper for the workingman in America and played an important role in helping the Eastern European Jewish immigrants transplant and adjust to American Life. One of the paper’s features was the Bintel Brief which gave these lonely souls the chance to pour out their hearts and in reply get an opinion or advice in solving their weighty problems. These letters to the paper were short biographies and description of problems of people who had barely escaped with their lives from disasters that raged over their heads and homes. This special afternoon will be a time of learning about our ancestors and finding out how these courageous people moved on to become our families.
