Deputy Principal’s Message
Dreams: Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life
is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast
to dreams for when dreams go, life is a barren
field frozen with snow. [Langston Hughes]
Dear Parents
On Tuesday we hold our last Parent Information Evening and I would like to take
this opportunity to thank all those parents who were able to make it to these
valuable meetings. Thank you also to all the teachers and HODs who ensured that
the evenings were informative and worthwhile for the parents. Our Grade 5 parents
were even treated to a romantic candlelit presentation courtesy of Eskom and the
Grade 5 teachers!

We are indeed privileged to have such a supportive parent body and a truly caring
and helpful Governing Body. It was good to have our chairman, Brendon
Goodenough, speaking at each evening and our treasurer, Brian Payne, representing
Brendon on one of the evenings.
Those of you who use Rose Gate would have noticed that, sadly, the beautiful
mosaic that adorned our outer wall has been removed. Due to a combination of
white ants, dryness and then rain, it started warping, so we have taken the decision
to remove it and stabilize it before we put it back up, hopefully with a plan to
overcome the ants and weather. Anyone with expertise in this regard is welcome to
contact Mrs Richards or me.
Cell phones are a part of our lives and serve a vital role in the way we now
communicate with each other and interact with the world. We do, however, need to
observe respectful use of these devices. Please will you support us in trying to
educate our children in the correct use of their cell phones. It might be useful to go
through our School Cell Phone Policy in this regard with your children as a starting
point for discussion - (printed hereunder).

The key factor in this policy is the responsible use of cell phones.
A cell phone should only be brought to school if the learner has permission from
the parents.
Cell phones are switched off or set on silent mode at all times.
The camera function is never used.
A cell phone is never openly displayed and should only be used in emergencies or
when a teacher or staff member gives permission.
The school will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to cell phones
where the school has not been grossly negligent or reckless.
If the use of a cell phone is abused it will be confiscated for a period of time
and the user may have the privilege of bringing it to school withdrawn.
Detentions and other forms of punishment will be implemented.
Parents are not to make incoming calls/sms’s during school hours.
It is a fact that we live in a society that can be threatening at times and a cell
phone, when used correctly can be a vital item to carry. Parents are advised to
explain very clearly to their children how a cell phone should be used correctly.

Yesterday, 1 February, Langston Hughes was born 113 years ago. He became
legendary as a poet and Human Rights activist in America and influenced many
leaders in that country and the world including Martin Luther King and our own
Nelson Mandela. Dreams is one of my favourite poems, especially for children.
They all have such fantastic dreams when they are young, we have to encourage
them to keep them alive all their lives.
Your child’s data sheet will be going home today. This is a very important
document and needs to be checked, altered where necessary, and returned
urgently.
Yours sincerely
Michael Foster
A REMINDER TO
JP PARENTS PLEASE
When collecting your children from Rose Gate, please
COME IN TO COLLECT THEM. The teacher on duty is
finding it difficult to monitor children running off when
they see their mom or dad.
Thank you for your co-operation.
